I wish the price was a bit lower – like $1,100 or so…
I’m sure it’s a great lens, but I want to see Sony’s next FF A-mount body before I decide to invest more in that system.
If* you already own a FF i would not be bothered and just keep using it. 🙂
You buy a body for a lens, not a lens for a body. 😉
You buy into a system as an integrated whole, not simply because there’s one lens or one body you like. My A-mount investment was based around the A850, which was great in its day. And while it’s still a good camera, I’ve branched out to other systems that give me capabilities the A850 lacked. I’m not going to go invest more in A-mount unless Sony gives me more reason than just another great Zeiss lens. I want a better A-mount body to go with it.
Sony appears to have no plans to produce a very high resolution camera in the near future. Many new high resolution lenses are being introduced for sony cameras. I see no reason to invest in any of them until I know I will have a high resolution camera to put them on.
Sony is projecting profits based on increased lens sales. Sony will have a dissapointing bottom line because they are not providing a reason to buy these lenses. Sell people a new higher resolution canera and they will want new higher resolution lenses to go with it. Sony has consistently not marketed thier product as a system.. These new lenses are good only if sony produces both a wide variety. Of lenses (not just the most common types) and a new camera that represents a big enough step ahead to make people who are not already looking for a new lens feel they need to go out and get some.
Sony is moving so slow on the camera inovation front that they will never get ahead of the competition.
UKbns (the ebay UK listing) aren’t actually based in the UK. They are based in China. The UK address is a holding address.
The lens would be shipped from China, although it would come through UK channels & would not be liable for import duties
gtfo out of here with the 1k price, zeiss your great’ but I’ll be happy with my sony 50mm 1.4 sam & sigma 85mm 1.4
The Sony/Zeiss A-mount FF lens lineup is looking good:
Sony Zeiss 16-35mm F2.8
Sony Zeiss 24mm F2.0
Sony Zeiss 24-70mm F2.8
Sony Zeiss 50mm F1.4
Sony Zeiss 85mm F1.4
Sony Zeiss 135mm F1.8
I wonder what the next Sony Zeiss lens will be.
I guess they will come with updated versions for the lenses without SSM focus motor.
I would imagine a 35/1.4 is somewhere in the pipeline, but I am personally really hoping a fast 28mm is in the works. At least a 28/2, but a 28/1.4 would be fantastic (I believe it would only be the second 28/1.4 to ever be produced).
I tend to disagree – the line-up needs to be renewed, it’s already falling behind.
The Zeiss 16-35 is no longer leading edge – the Nikon 14-24 is superior.
Same for the Zeiss 24-70 – the new Tamron 24-70 is at least equally good for less money.
The 135 1.8 is still unmatched – but lacks state-of-the-art AF (SSM).
The 70-200 2.8 starts to appear a bit outdated as well.
The 35 1.4 is a joke by now, when you compare it to the new SIgma.
The new 50 is expected to be leading edge. And the 135 STF continues to be unmatched.
i went to order it today right from sony and i was told by them that the final price is $1,864.49 Canadian Currency.
That is Ghastly!!! And I thought 50mm lenses were the cheapest to manufacture? I feel Sony has price gouged on this one. I’m sure it’s great but this is too much.
I’m hoping the next Carl Zeiss prime will be either a 14 or 16/f2.8. I’m hoping they don’t get over redundant by adding primes that are already close in range to what is currently on offer. Also, updating the non SSM lenses would be great as well.
My guess is the next ZEISS would be 35/1.8 SSM. ^^^
Sony have not produced a single fullframe macro lens since taking over from Minolta; the 50mm and 100mm in their lineup are still the old Minolta designs from the last millenium!
Zeiss make some rather nice macro lenses though – it might be nice if the next collaboration bought one of those to A-mount?
P.S. Anyone got the 50mm yet?
Most of my lenses are macro.
Fortunately Sigma and Tamron make s good selection of high quality macros.
I’m on the fence with the 50 although its more of a passion rather than a need. Still, by the time Sony delivers a true upgraded FF A-mount body, of which I’m confident, the price the ZA 50 will likely be higher – tough call. I mean, it doesn’t take much to be fully vested into a system as I still use my A900 with a single Zeiss and have zero complaints.
