So is the RX100 II sensor made by Sony or BSI?
Made by Sony. BSI is the technology, BackSide Illuminated.
Ah, got it. Thanks.
Approximately 40% more sensitive in dimly lit situations compared to the existing RX100 model. Looks like it’s a big improvement.
40% = a little less than 1/2 stop (or so I’ve read)
It is a bit less than half a stop, but we are at the stage of development of sensors when the physical limits are being approached, and even a half stop improvement in sensitivity is a big achievement.
40% is 0.49 stops, minor but useful improvement.
Thanks for the links. I just pre-ordered the RX-100M II from your Adorama link. Hopefully will receive it in a few weeks.
2 dollars less than I thought!
Good to see Sony sticking to their promise of not releasing anything new unless it’s a major improvement.
LOL
That was a statement regarding interchangeable lens cameras (i.e. alpha and alpha nex). No one said a thing about fixed lens cameras.
The only upgrade I wish my RX100 had is the 24P in movie mode.
Isn’t there a firmware upgrade they can do to add that? I mean, if it can do 60P then why not 24P?

So where’s the surprise???
no surprise. Cybershot camera coming soon anyway 😉
Here is the surprise:
HVL-43M with Multi Interface Hot Shoe and Vide-LED announced:
http://www.dpreview.com/news/2013/06/27/sony-introduces-hvl-f43m-flash
Ok, that sure is good flash. Thanks for the link.
That is more interesting news than the camera announcements – not a single rumour about it beforehand though, despite quite a few people here asking about future flash announcements. Maybe Andrea doesn’t care about flashes!
Ok. Thanks a lot for your dedication in maintaining this site mister admin.
Also, the accessory rumors were true! There is an official grip and filter adapter, and they are pretty cheap! Just $15 and $30.
Grip: https://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666583667

wow. the best just gets better.
Booyah!
Thank you Sony!
While you are at it, might as well make some grips and better cases for the RX1!
Maybe make a grip and lens hood like UN-Ltd JPN UNX 8118 and the grip.
No?

its already discounted on amazon!!
Want an even bigger discount? If you’re a student or teacher, register an educational account on Sony.com, and you get $75 off the price, so $674.99 instead of $749.99. It works, I used it myself.
Is there also a Sony education discount in Canada?
But you’ll have to pay about $65 of sales tax. Didn’t save too much.
Glad to see they updated the 43 series flash as well. It’s a good flash for the price, I just wish it would warn me before the overheating protection means I have to switch to built-in flash for a few minutes if I don’t slow down…
I’m impressed, actually, that Sony didn’t increase the price of the RX1 for taking out the low-pass filter.
Still no true “World Cam” video capability (PAL/NTSC dual boot) and no 30p framerate for NTSC models, also the usual “NTSC mode on PAL 50i model” setup for the RX-1R……
BAD
ahh a New TTL Flash
Sony HVL-F43M flash
Wow Sony is sooo innovative
This should have been announced with the A58, Sony are idiots.
Not really, I’d was expecting it to be announced with the A77 successor, but seeing as that got cancelled…
Why didn’t the 36MP sensor in the Nikon D800 make it into the RX1R or is this a Nikon designed sensor which Sony just manufacture for them? I think Tobisha are manufacturing the sensors used in Nikons latest cameras the D5200 & D7100
Hands-on Video in German: http://www.chip.de/video/Sony-Cyber-shot-DSC-RX100-Mark-II-Praxis-Test-Video_62705920.html
Thanks. Good video. Don’t understand German, but I can figure out some of it, and the camera looks great.
For almost the same price as the new RX100M2, you can have the Ricoh GR with a larger APS-C sensor, better IQ, better controls and feeling in hand… Failed Sony.
Wished Sony would also come with an APS-C sensor camera, to fill the gap between the RX1 and RX100.
Better IQ on the GR? Hardly.
The RX also has a tilt screen, can take an EVF, focus ring, WiFi oh and what’s that? More than 1 focal length!? Amazing!
What you lose going from RX100-II to the GR:
f1.8(which pretty much negates the sensor size disadvantage)
29-100mm focal range
Image stabilization
Tiltable flash for bouncing
Tiltable LCD
Wifi/NFC
Those are gimmicks. The Ricoh has a proper UI, which makes it a camera as opposed to a toy. I’d get the Ricoh because I am a photog, while most RX100 users are obviously gadget geeks; this is why these two products could not be more different.
Nah, it has nothing to do with you being a “photog.” You’re just some guy feeling insecure about your camera purchase and trying to justify your choice to yourself. Honestly, no one here cares.
Well, is the GR “pocketable?”
You are comparing apples and oranges.

I don’t see RX100 II BIS sensor improves much, though it looks a little softer by filtering high frequency noise while preserving similar amount of picture information. Please compare on Imaging Resources at:
http://www.imaging-resource.com/IMCOMP/COMPS01.HTM
Anyway, for the similar price (though the price of RX100 has actually dropped), RX100 II is still a good product with its added features.
Look again, the new sensor is a big improvement. Watch the Imaging Resource video above, and compare their sample images. It’s not softer, just less sharpening is being applied in-camera, and much more detail is being preserved. Just look at the crops of the cafe, especially the woman’s face:
RX100: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/sony-rx100/ZY_RX100_STREET-CR.JPG
RX100 II: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/sony-rx100-ii/ZY_RX100M2_STREET-CR.JPG
Sony did a really good job with this new 1″ BSI sensor.
Imaging Resource is showing jpeg samples.
From RAW, differences may be not so big because we may be seeing the Honami jpeg engine at work now.
Imaging Resource’s thoughts on the sensor:
“We’ve said elsewhere that the RX100 II’s noise is a full f-stop better than that of the original RX100. This shot shows pretty conclusively that it’s even better than that. Here, we have a crop from the RX100 II, shot at ISO 6,400, bracketed by RX100 images. The top image was shot by the RX100 at ISO 3,200, the bottom one at ISO 6,400. To our eyes, the RX100 II’s shot at 6,400 is actually cleaner than the RX100’s at 3,200. At ISO 6,400, there’s no comparison.
The RX100’s sensor was already an excellent one, and its high-ISO performance outstripped anything near its size. The new Mark II version takes it to an entirely new level, though. And all of this is without taking into consideration Sony’s highly effective multi-shot modes, which use multiple, rapid-fire shots to cut noise, while giving the exposure effect of a much longer exposure, combined with the anti-camera-shake effect of a much shorter one.
All in all, the Sony RX100 II really blows away the competition when it comes to after-dark shooting with a compact, pocketable camera. As Dave said in his YouTube video on the RX100 II, the improvements are enough that we think a lot of current RX100 users will be looking to trade up. Very impressive!”
did anyone else notice that lag when the RX100 and the Xperia phone connected? it was on and off spikes of lag which is common problem with my NEX models too, looking forward to improvements on the wifi capabilities someday from sony
RX1r: Looking at DPR studio scene comparison, the old version is as good and with less moire. Comparing to D800, the Nikon is much better at, say ASA 3200. Truly, comparing also D800 and D800E AFTER post processing, the differences are there but minor. Seems to be the same with the RX1 variations.
RX100 II: This is real improvement on an already great/excellent camera! That sensor is really state of the art. Can’t help dreaming of a camera RX120 with a better (and bigger) lens. This would outperform any current m43! (Well it is my guess 🙂 )
I guess any one can find test Pictures that prove a Point 🙂 :

Is the softness above from oof or due to lens quality?
Also, I think the noise is worse on D800 on this sample …
… darn, that link should have been to ISO 3200 …
Oh well, u have to change yourself …
I’m impressed with the low-light images/capability of the RX100II.
Any good pre-order links for Europe ? The 600GBP/1000+USD WexUK link doesn’t qualify…
Wex UK price is a joke!
Pocketable.
Sample images are better for the Ricoh.. Much more details, obviously because of dslr-like sensor. Having a prime lense (no zoom) allows better IQ than zooms.. Depends if you like the 28mm focal length.
I think you should reserve judgement until the image comparison tool is updated with the RX100II.
Also, in a review they mentioned that the default sharpening in JPEGs is now less aggressive than in the RX100 (so this may contribute to your impression), however you can still apply sharpening and reveal more detail.
The Ricoh and Coolpix A also have F2.8 as the widest aperture, which is not great at all for low-light movies.
Petapixel published an article with a bombastic title:
“Sony RX1R Bests the RX1 in Sharpness by Ditching the Anti-Aliasing Filter”
I saw the DPReview comparison charts and it is as expected; sharper but heavily prone to moire.
In real life things will be different though and you will only see moire in brick walls, fences, clothes with patterns and so on. For those shooting nature, the lack of AA will make a noticeable difference.
However, I bet you the following, the Imaging Resource article has these real life comparisons and they see the Honami jpeg engine at work.
“Some of the increased sharpness and definition in these shots could be attributed to improved JPEG production, but we think some of it is also the result of how the increased detail in the RX1R’s images interacts with its noise-reduction algorithms.”
This may be the real difference they see, because the DPReview comparison tool does not show THAT MUCH of a marked difference between RX1 and RX1R when compared in RAW.
Maybe Sony will delay the Honami jpeg engine release to help RX1R sales at the beginning.
On the RX100MII, though….nice!
I want one and soon will get one.
yawn…
mildly interesting, way overhyped
Im glad we can agree to disagree.
Yawn….. when is the EVIL FF camera coming ?
We need a built in EVF,interchangeable lenses and full frame Sony.
Just like the NEX7 but with a FF and weak or no AA filter.
With the RX110 they should have made an improved HVL-20AM flash with the new foot. Who would venture to put the HVL43 on the cybershot?
Sony are in danger of becoming cybershot company (if they already are not) with a losing phone/phablet business on the side.
Well, if that’s what it brings them profit…why not ? Let Sony continue to build great, small cameras and let the others build dinosaurs 🙂
The phone business has just started to make money.

tharwan, Thank you very much! I was completely oblivious to the existence of that!
AFAIK, No one has mentioned it???
Thanks again! 🙂
I can see why no one mentioned it. It is the same old flash sold with the adapter so that it can be used on the newer bodies. 🙁
I own one, I use it for triggering f60s. It’s a nice little flash, identical to its predecessor (except for the foot) as far as I know. I’m interested in trying it out on the new rx100.
Well, nothing on the autofocus front…
It seems that there are news on autofocus front. From dpreview:
“Overall, on the basis of our limited time with the camera the RX100 II seems at least as capable as its predecessor, with the added potential benefit of improved autofocus speed in low light, something the RX100 struggled with. We weren’t able to directly compare it to the RX100, but in a darkened lab with only one window letting in a small amount of light the RX100 II was able to focus quickly on subjects that would challenge an ordinary pocket camera. Even at telephoto, we were impressed how well it acquired focus.”
Well better than noting, I only read the review for the 1R where they stated that nothing has changed.
RX100 II has no touch screen?
Seems like the RX100M2 owns all Panasonic m43’s (apart from GH3) in all aspects but the DOF flexibility. Amazing camera.
Unbelieveable, if the Ricoh GR and Nikon Coolpix A suddenly became redundant. The RX100II has a lens which is 1,33333.. stops faster than the GR and Coolpix A and the new sensor seems to have barely 1 stop worse low-light properties. even the DOF at 28mm equiv. is virtually the (1/4 stop) same….on top of that you get almost 4X zom range.
You can’t compare the rx100 2 with ricoh gr or Nikon Coplpix A, they have much bigger sensors, so better IQ. Only thing rx100 is better is perhaps low light performance and for sure video. The rest is on another level, also if you consider the poor Sony UI and ergonomics
Why not??
DR and colour depth is impressive on the RX100 according to DXOMark and low light advantage that the GR and Coolpix A has is eaten up by the faster lens on the RX100. The Ricoh and Nikon do not even have a DOF flexibility worth mentioning due to the much larger max aperture at 28mm equiv. on the RX100. So what parameters are left where the Ricoh and Nikon are not comparable due to sensor size?
The UI is a matter of taste. The RX100-II have some awsome features like the hand-held twilight and sofiticated digital zoom AND the Alpha line menu system. I admit that the GR has some nice features to like the snap focus features…but I really do not see where the two APS-C fixed lens cameras are so much better than the RX100-II
Handsome cameras.
No news on a77 update?
What is that giant wart on the top of the camera. Gross!!!!!!!!!!
There is color noise in RX1-R
I hope Sony offer an upgrade path (sensor swap) from RX1 to RX1r. I think the RX1r is what the RX1 should have been at launch
