    1. I think they will move the flash to the other side of the hot shoe and locate the pop up EVF at the top left corner, or they change the flash design to make it more compact and combine it with the pop up EVF.

  1. Better than I could ever have imagined !
1.44 MP EVF ?!?! incredible in such a body ?
Such a bright lens in such a body !?!?
XAVC in such a body ?!?!
    Pleasezzz, take my money 🙂

    1. the XAVC has nothing with the body though, knowing that Panasonic moved on from just AVCHD a while ago, it’s nice to see Sony finally stepping up, even more when they have claimed before to care so much about video and all its accessories.

        1. And you talk as the compact size presents some kind of impediment of why a compact camera doesn’t have XAVC or as if there is a relation between the compactness of the body and the camera having or not XAVC, it doesn’t.

If you were to say something about the market like high-end compact cameras, I could agree, but no, so again, did you get the difference? But I’m sorry, I’m the idiot here, clearly.

          1. Yes, the compact size does means it most likely won’t get XAVC. You obviously know nothing about market segmentations and how businesses work. So you are clearly the idiot.

          2. Look who is the idiot now. This is not pure XAVC which is yes pro segment, it is consumer XAVC that’s why you see the s . It is XAVCs which is limited to 50mbps.

        2. Which is irrelevant as “XAVC” is just marketing bullshit blabber for “high bitrate AVC”

  2. Wow, that’s some serious improvement. None of the other manufacturers have managed to offer anything close to the original RX100 and now Sony is pushing even further. That’s really impressive.
The only sad part is that they probably still haven’t done anything about the mediocre AF but I guess we’ll see it in a MII version of this camera with PDAF

        1. lol, yea
As an excuse, I might say that Japanese companies often skip 4… 😛 (should still be V though)

  3. I wouldn’t mind an extra bulk for getting through at least 85mm, I would really want the potrait focal length, even more with f/2.8.

I’m really interested in this camera but I want to know the price, Sony tend to get the price quite high when it has an EVF. I wouldn’t ming waiting the price come down a bit.

      1. Yeah, but if I crop, I also change the DOP by the same amount of crop I apply on it, so it’s not really the same thing and the idea would be to get the max lack DOP as possible. A 70mm f/2.8 in a 1″ sensor would have the same DOP as a 70mm f/7.5 in FF – if I’m not mistaken – and if I was to apply the crop, it would look like a 85mm f/9 instead of a 85mm f/7.5 if it was a 24-85mm f/1.8-2.8.

  4. @Admin: “I have been told all other specs are the same of the current RX100II model.”
Does that mean the flash will be the same ? (=tiltable/bouncable)

  5. evf AND 180 degree flip screen? yes please. it’s rare to find a camera that has these two features combined. i don’t think Sony has even made one with the two.

      1. And all the bottom articulating screens, like a55/33/57/65 as well. They had the ‘seflie’ screens long before they were cool 😉

Also F3/5R/5T could have an optional EVF and the flip around screen, just not at the same time.

        1. Wrong and wrong. a55, a33 and a57 can not flip 180. F3, 5r, 5t can not have evf and 180 screen at the same time. You have to unscrew the evf and unmount.

      2. but with a much bigger footprint, so my guess is that we either won’t have an EVF or a flip-up screen. If I could choose, I would choose the flip-up to be in it, because the EVF increases the costs and size. Maybe a cheaper similar specced evf accessory would be nice instead!

  6. 850 € ?? We need standards for certain things. For example, 300€ should be maximum for a 1BR apartment anywhere in the world. And 850€ is too much for a compact.

    1. “oh noes, I can’t afford something so it therefore must be cheaper to fit my needs!”

Yeah, that’s not selfish at all…

      1. As opposed to, “I know this camera is way too expensive but I’ll buy it anyway because I’ve more money than sense and I must have the latest toy.”
Even if I could afford these overpriced cameras I wouldn’t buy them on principal. It doesn’t matter how desirable something is, I will not be ripped off!

        1. “RIP-OFF” is harsh lol , as it is very much a matter of opinion. If you value a truly compact camera that fits in your pocket while style capable of very good results,Along with a fast enough lens and large enough sensor to allow for a wider range of applications you are quite limited.

Even allowing for “equivalence” , to match this camera in mFT { you need a body with built-in EVF and in “equivalence” terms a 12-35mm F2.4-3.7 lens. This would result in a larger heavier and considerably more expensive camera/

      2. I CAN afford it, but would prefer a bigger sensor package in that case. I have bought the RX100, around 600€, which seemed OK for what you get.

        1. The Olympus E-M1 with the same mediocre mFT image quality as every other mFT released ion the past 2 years cost a whopping £1299 body only.

        2. Well the package is very small, Sony keeps packing more stuff into it, not sure it’s realistic to expect a larger sensor in the same body.

You can get it for much less money by buying to when it is only a year old. The II will be dropping in price to the levels you are comfortable with soon enough.

  7. Looks like a good step forward. In the RX10, it seemed that the 24mm in combination with the 200mm sacrificed quite a bit of sharpness in comparison to the RX100s with also the “area specific noise reduction” seeming not to work that good/any better… But here, it´s just 24-70mm…hope they chose that range for best quality without any compromises instead of making a hurried 24-100 with inferior quality! Just hope with the new lens, there will be an improved macro mode (i.e., closer than 5cm).
Also exciting how “the others” will react now….i.e., IF a rumored 1″-P8000 with 24-120mm, F1.8-3, 1/8000s will become reality or stay in wonderland. And Panasonic and Fujifilm should also react….IF they can! The Canon G1XMII seems to be quite/too soft wide open, also too big for me. We´ll see!! 🙂

    1. One thing Nikon and Canon have demonstrated is that unwilling to compromise the sales of their bigger/more-expensive cameras. If Nikon released a 1″ P8000 with a spec like that it would eat in to their J/V One camera sales. They wont do it. Or ifthey do, they will cripple something, like the video. Probably marketing it as a ‘pure photography’ compact 😉

      1. Yes, but to a special degree, that is what EVERY company does that sells both, compacts and interchangeables. I mean, it would be nothing of a too big problem, I suppose, to cut your flaggship 24MP-APSC-sensor into about two and get a superb iso and DR 12MP chip for an outstanding compact. but that would kill/cut your other sales. That´s marketing….thats capitalism! 😀

      2. With DSLRs still hugely dominating the interchangeable lens market { 81% latest cipa data} neither Canon nor Nikon have any great urgency to really attack the mirrorless offerings. Though their 1″ sensor is not as good as the sony one it really is an amazingly responsive camera.

  8. For me this means the end of my smaller format mirrorless adventure. For my more dedicated photography situations I have a D800 & A7r with a wide selection of excellent lenses , for when I am looking for maximum image quality and don’t mind the weight /bulk .

I have a pretty comprehensive mFT kit but looking through my years of shooting with it , the vast majority of my shots 95%+ have been shot under 70mm and under 400ISO. Only when mounted with the smallest pancake lenses and using a mFT body without an EVF can the be considered truly jacket pocket friendly. The smallest mFT body with a built in EVF the GX7 which I own even with the smallest slowest compact zoom is significanyly larger than the RX100 models

    http://camerasize.com/compact/#491.30,467,472.397,ha,t

For my uses when I want a small light camera the mFT option offers little advantage over the RX100 models . My only issue with them was the lack of built-in EVF , this seems to solve that and I will be jumping in as soon as i can get my hands on it. For a low ISO , wide to standard focal length shooter looking for a really compact offering this looks unbeatable.

    1. Me, too. I either shoot below 100mm for most situations, or I want to trap animals/birds with even 300mm being too short (nothing for an enthusiast campact anyway). However, a 2-3cm macro mode in combination with the 24-70mm was great and would make me buy this 😉

    2. Exactly my thoughts, as I was considering a m43 purchase. Portability and price simply aren’t distinctive enough nowadays.

  9. RX100 and MKII don’t have the same sensor… (though it is the same MP count). I assume this would be the MKII sensor…

  10. RX100M3 sounds like a great camera, but as the confirmed spec of 70mm@f2.8 means its only one stop faster than the RX100M1, I can’t see myself upgrading just yet. 100m@f2.8 might have convinced me, being 1 and 2/3rd stops faster than the RX100M1, would have been much nicer for shallower DoF.

Like I said, great camera. If I didnt have an RX100 already I’d love it. 70mm is fine. I bought the Panny LX3 years ago, the first of the new wave of serious compacts, and that was only a 16-60mm lens. Still rocked.

So, still waiting for the RX10M2 with this XAVC-S codec, plz.

    1. “70mm@f2.8 means its only one stop faster than the RX100M1”
That’s only for the aperture side of the deal, though. With the new optical formula, you could expect much sharper corners for example.

    2. ‘Still waiting’? Still? The RX10 has been out for what, 5 months? Yeah I can’t BELIEVE Sony has taken this long to release an RX10 II, I guess Sony are abandoning RX series! Crap, better all jump ship! I hear Canon’s S-series hardly gets any updates, they sound safe 😉

  11. Any idea if it’s doing full-sensor read-out for video, like the RX10? That + XAVC-S would make it awesome quality….

  12. You have to feel a bit sorry for the Canon G1X MkII.

One thing the G1 had over the RX100 was a (crappy) viewfinder. This was dropped on the G1 MkII and a much brighter lens was added. Canon must’ve been pleased getting at least the lens much brighter than the RX100.

Now this RX100 MkIII basically has a proper good EVF AND the brighter lens, in a much smaller body (http://camerasize.com/compact/#467,534,ha,t). Given how high Canon priced their G1X II the market for that just got a lot smaller again.

    1. Canon dropped the ball with the G-series entirely imho. Up until the G12 these were great cameras, but they simply didn’t keep up with the times.

      1. I love my trusty old G12, but surely G15 and G16 are much better cameras, especially regarding AF and operational speed. IQ is the same for all practical purposes, but you can’t expect much better with a sensor of that size. The newer models have faster lenses, which is also nice.
G1 X was a mixed bag, the main drawbacks being sluggish AF and poor macro performance. The new Mk2 fixes those things, as well as having a faster lens, an optional EVF and a slightly less chunky appearance. The dual control rings is a nice idea, even if the implementation isn’t perfect. It’s a very expensive camera, though.

        1. I haven’t been following the latest models, so let me know if I am missing something. Here’s what I meant. There was always some indecision about the swivel screen between models and it seems it has been lost again on the G15 and G16 (screen resolution has dropped too), probably to better promote the unwieldy brick that the G1x is. They still insist on keeping that entirely useless OVF, where an EVF can be introduced. The ISO dial has been lost. AF and operational speed improvements I consider to be entirely normal, so the lens speed is the only improvement deserving praise that has been seen for the last several generations.

  13. No doubt a nice product. What on earth makes it worth such a high price? At this kind of sticker, no wonder camera sales are tanking all over.

    1. If people are willing to pay the price, then it’s worth the price. And if sales are disappointing, the price will be adjusted accordingly. That’s how a market economy works.

Sony has very little competition for the RX100 series. There are other pocketable enthusiast zoom compacts (S120, P340, LF1, XZ-10, XQ1), but none can match the IQ of the RX100. Those that can match the IQ, Canon G1 X Mk2 and Leica X Vario, are bigger and more expensive. Then there are many that are both bigger and have worse IQ (G16, P7800, LX7, XZ-2, X20 etc).

This lack of direct competition allows Sony to price the RX100 higher than they otherwise could.

      1. Yep, I watched the DigitalRev TV review of the Canon and watching Kai try putting the Canon into his pocket and take it out was a hoot. Not to mention the entire design except IQ was rubbish. In contrast, Kai had trouble finding anything unkind – and he’s the king of snark – to say about the RX100.

  14. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! YEAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! FINALLYYYYYY! Is a bomb this camera.. This destroy all!!

  15. A built in ND filter would be icing on the cake, all too easy to hit 1/2000 on a bright day with my RX100 when wide open and forget to stop it down a bit or put a filter on which is just something else to carry. Looks a great update though !

  16. FINALLYY!!! This is the waited specs for years and years
If there is a Slog dr profile as a7s is a dream camera 🙂

      1. Is the color profile that mantain all detail for color grade in post. If there is that profile this is a pro video pocket camera

    1. This is NOT FAIR!!!!! **dribble**. I have been asking Sony for a 54mp sensor for months and months. You whinge like a b*tch for two days on SAR and get what you want.
      Why is Sony ignoring me?
I will ring Sony’s Executive Director of Megapixels today, as I’d like some assurance that my personal demands will be met. If Sony cannot give me that assurance then there will be some VERY sore animals in the morning.

      1. Not only is your one-trick pony comedy act beating a petrified horse, watching a pitiful sock puppet account(s) trying to drive someone off of SAR using grade school bullying is particularly un-funny and pathetic.

        1. Says SAR’s upstanding citizen. You’re almost as annoying as Barry.
Barry has bought it on himself with his spamming/trolling of the forum.
          He can look after himself.

          1. I have to agree with violated at this point, Barry has brought it upon himself.

He’s the rain man of megapixels and focal length.

  17. How does it feel current RX100M2 users? Six months later a new camera? Meanwhile, in the Fuji world, they released FW update for X-E2 which brings refresh rate of X-T1 to X-E2 -> that’s how you care about your current customers.

    1. Your analogy is wrong. The M3 is a different camera compared to the M2; while with the fw update you can only unlock potential which was there but not realized. It will not change the lens or let you magically pop out an EVF…

    2. stupid question, its like buying computer parts, there is always something new around the corner.. but if you are happy with your purchase why wouldn’t you still be happy with it even if there is a new model released.

        1. What difference does it make what brand an all-in-one is? It’s not a system camera. A Fuji user can replace it with a Sony or a Panasonic or a Canon or a Leice all- in-one – there is no lens use lost.

By your logic, whenever a new, better version is released than the owners of an earlier version that has been slightly exceeded should feel angry. People who purchase cameras to produce [invaluable] photos will never feel that way because more often than not a moment cannot be repeated.

          1. Christopher – what I meant is that it would be much better if manufacturers stopped releasing half-baked products if they know that by the time of release they have already tech for another 2 versions of that product. Just slow down, take time and care and release cameras every 18 months or so. These extreme release cycles are just crazy and wasteful.

          2. Well, obviously not. If they didn’t make a profit they wouldn’t. Its a perfectly sane strategy. If they dropped it while every other manufacturer would continue applying it and profiting from it, that would be crazy.

          3. But the release cycles are dictated by the consumers’ constant craving for something new.

          4. Your 18 months schedule is entirely random. Why not 23 months? Or 5 years? You are assuming (no idea why) that at the time of release they have the technology for the next release, because one year later they release a new technology? That doesn’t make any sense. You are also calling a product half-baked from a one hundred percent hindsight position. What was half-baked about the RX100 at the time of release? It was praised everywhere.

          5. Understand…Do you mean bulky kit lenses, no improvement for AF for Nex7 and A77 users, better jpg compression, exciting flashes, all the new prime lenses… etc. all manufactured by SONY? …

          6. Why, it seems like the target consumer for cameras are pathetic spoiled trust fund baby and will buy whatever they want, whenever they want anyhow.

          7. Planned obscelescence does suck and some companies are more egregious than others but some companies learn what works and doesn’t after a model is released and uses that information for the follow-up. Sony moving to full sensor readout for video modes is evidence of this (given the video IQ backlash of the a99).

For most of Sony’s cameras, the lifecycle is much longer. It’s 3 years for the a-mount bodies – and users on here moan and groan that a-mount is dead because of the long cycle. The rx1 is over a year-and-a-half old now. I expect the a7 bodies to go 2 to 3 years between model upgrades. For the consumer grade bodies, an annual bump isn’t unreasonable since they have been thinning out the cybershot line in general.

          8. Technology is in a constant state of improvement. If companies waited for all of the technology in any given product to be perfect, they’d quickly find that they’d never release any products. The RX100 was released with the best technology for the price point and design they had available at the time. It only makes sense from a production standpoint that they’d release new products as new technology became available. The idea that they’re crippling their original product because it doesn’t have the same tech as the product they release 1 year later is not accurate in any way.

    3. I bought an rx100II and it feels fine. I expect sony to update it annually and they have. Plus, the photos / videos already taken with it are worth more to me than the entire price of the camera.

Plus, I expect to continue to be able to capture photos after tomorrow.

      1. SAR has led me to believe that older generation cameras will no longer take photos worth looking at after the release of a new generation. I’m fairly certain, judging from the whining here, that this is the case. Your MKII will no longer function as well as it has after the MKIII is released.

      1. As expected. You made a bad comparison; mistook (intentionally or not) the time between releases; and to a big extent blamed Sony for your own purchasing insecurity 🙂

        1. yep, mistook time between releases -> sent link to this to my friend who bought mk2 and he told me that they must be joking to release another one 6 months later. no purchasing insecurity here – rx100 isn’t camera for me and never has been, although it’s a brilliant camera and i recommended it to that friend of mine as a holiday camera which can take great photos and video and is tiny.

  18. Poll is missing an option.
Its interessting, might buy it at a later date, after reading some actual reviews..
maybe looking at it in a store and see if the there is a good grip to get for it 🙂

      1. They will , because this is XAVC-S Consumer version 8 bit 4:2:0
They still use the real XAVC 10 bit 4:2:2 Intraframe on their higher end cameras like the F5

  19. I would have preferred 85mm at the longer end or the original 100mm, but yeah the 24mm on the wide is a smart decision by Sony.

Now if “Almost same size and weight as the current RX100/M2 models.” is true and I mean only a difference of a millimetre or two bigger, And has an excellent built-in EVF — then I’ll definitely get this.

Plus presumably full-sensor readout and this could be the perfect travel camera, and almost take everywhere camera. My take everywhere is still my iPhone 5.

  20. Ah yeah, baby. (Thinking it will be better than a Driftwood Moon T7 hacked GH2)

EDIT: Well. Apparently XAVCs is not as flexible for grading as I would have dreamed of. The very little literature available appears to suggest that it is better than AVCHD (hooray for that) but still too compressed.

  21. too much for such a small camera. Why not make an even smaller camera with just a 12/1.4, no evf no ultra delicate looking tilting screen.
noe that would be my dreamcamera ok actually it would have to be waterproof and ruggedized to be my true dreamcamea…

    1. lol imagine a 12mm f1.4 compact cam on a stabilizing rig like steadicam or glidecam. It would be the dream video camera for event.

  22. Damn it. Just bought a NEX-7 last week, to use with the 20mm pancake. Had I known about a “high quality compact with quality EVF” right on the doorstep, I’d have bought an A7 and the compact. Now back to comparing… but I don’t think I’ll replace the NEX-7 with the A7, just not enough gain there.

    Arno

  23. Can someone pls tell if the LAEA4 adapter can be combined with A7’s focus system? Does the SLT phase detect works together with the sensor or I’m only going to get the AF from te adapter?

    1. AF from the adapter, if you want to adapt and use the sensor AF then you will need the LAEA3 (which will be slower).

  24. Great little camera. Sony should probably keep one of the previous 2 versions on the market along with this new M3 as this will likely be expensive for most people.

    1. small size doesnt mean small price. it has a build in evf which is quite remarkable compared to cameras like the leica t or a sony rx1.

  25. I have the m2 and m1, the only thing I really want is the flip up screen. At the end of the day this camera still has a one inch sensor, so no breakthroughs here. Quite a nice update but that’s a premium price for a compact camera.
And I thought the mk2 was expensive.. USD 850?

    1. Why don’t you just sell your M1 & M2 and you will have almost enough money to buy a new M3? Not sure why everybody complains so much about the price of the newest technology. You should just think about the cost to trade up!

    1. Well the mk2 launched here in the UK at around £650 { with no evf } so 800 euros { £660ish } is not too terrible. The RX100mk2 is now at around £540

  26. “800 Euros is too expensive” … maybe in the US, but in Europe we are used to excessive VAT and other funny taxes. Most of us don’t care anymore about prices that much.

In fact, if it proves to be as predicted I consider it quite cheap still.
I vividly remember paying 1.300 EURO (at the time) for an Olympus bridgecam C-8080 that was heavy and slow. I’m going to stand in line in front of you all to buy 1 !

  27. For those concerned about the price…again:

Which other camera will have this size and a lens with this zoom and aperture range (lets not bring the DOF issue because if you did care for DOF, you wouldn’t be looking at this anyways) for less than this?

And the photos are not “compact camera” class, but more like m4/3 challenging.

Does anyone pay people to whine about Sony? If so, tell me who do I get in touch to so tomorrow I become an RX-series basher-royale.

    1. But it’s a valid complaint. The price on the RX100 series raises eyebrows. Hardly ‘bashing’. The counter-argument is don’t be overly defensive of criticism of Sony.

You want one? You know where you keep your credit card. Buy one. Buy 2 to prove you’re a big fan. ;^)

      1. The eyebrows that know the price of everything but the value of nothing, right?
It is what it is. Same as the other RX cameras. There is nothing like what they are now.
I have 2 RX1’s because I work professionally and I need a back up. Where else can I get that lens and that sensor together in that size?
With the RX100s, where else can you get THAT for that price?

    2. Agreed, it would be a 12-35/2.4-3.8 for m43, a 16-45/3.2-4.9 on apsc, 24-70/4.9-7.6 for FF if you want the same DOF. With those body+lens combinations you would get a much larger package and the high ISO advantage goes away because of the brighter lens. Also those combinations would cost hands down at least as much..

    3. It is a somewhat unique camera! The closest competition I can think of is the 1) Panasonic GM1 for IQ (but it isn’t pants pocketable with lens) or 2)Canon S100 (which doesn’t have the IQ).

      1. On paper the Nikon 1 system should be what the RX100 series has proved to be but with the added benefit of interchangeable lenses. Unfortunate for Nikon they didn’t (or couldn’t?) use Sony’s 1″ sensor because the ones they’ve been using are rubbish. I’m still holding out hopes for the Nikon 1 V3’s 18mp sensor. The DxO scores are crap but the Nikon France marketing samples don’t look so bad as long as you keep clear of high ISO.

        1. Unfortunate Nikon that can’t reduce the size of their lenses since they are interchangeable. When you have a camera that is 75% the size of the next bigger sensor category (m43) and the price is not that far off…you do wonder why would you go for that camera to begin with.
Nikon 1 raises more eyebrows than Sony RX100 series.

  28. Seems like if this performs well IQ wise, it will kill the Canon G1 MK2…Good I was just looking for such a cam as a second/wife cam…bit pricy but ok…

    1. The Canon G1 Mk2 kills the Canon G1 Mk2. ;^)

It’s one of those designs that makes one think what were the engineers thinking? A compact all-in-one that’s not compact at all. Clumsy design. I’ll give credit to Canon for giving it stellar IQ and AF but the package surrounding it misses entirely the segment it’s targeting.

  29. I don’t think there is anything more to be desired from this camera. But they could release a lower-end model with no EVF option at a lower price point, I think (since the EVF is a pop-up, it should be very easy to do this). I for one, never use a viewfinder on compact cameras.

  30. it’s going to be amazing camera 🙂

and admin , does have the hotshoe mount + playmemories camera apps 🙂 ?

      1. specs shared yesterday. Will repost them soon. On the two lenses I dind’t get specs yet and other sources dind’t hear about it. I tmay be just a roadmap announcement?

  31. im sorry ..but 1inch sensor to 25k iso when fullblown dslr’s still struggle with 12k on low light..thats just pushing it too much .
as for all other aspects.cool solution for someone who must use a compact

    1. Nobody forces you to use it. Good to have the choice though. I use very high ISO a lot on Sony cameras in HC Black and White mode

      1. yes ..but my point is that at 800$ you cannot escape the comparison to the A6000 camera which can take 12k and even 25k shots ( latter depends on scene ) that will actually look good.

if all i get is just the lens and a bit more compact body ( personally im not gonna carry an 800$ item to an event i need jeans to )
        then count me off .

but i do get the point of this specific solution and welcome it .

    1. I thought it was some sort of a mistake at first, that a design like that would be meaningless, but then it came to me that maybe they don’t have enough space to squeeze enough controls/big enough screen onto the back with space left for an EVF, so they decided to put something else in the front and an EVF that could pop up in the back when needed. It seems logical since this is still a model that prioritizes compactness. In fact it’s a very clever move.

  32. i’m a bit disappointed how fast sony offers new versions of this cam. i switched from the mk1 to the mk2 recently -.-

the mk3 is really a nice cam (if iq is okay) but i’m currently thinking about buying a Lumix GM1 with pancake 12-32mm zoom and maybe the 20mm 1.7 for lowlight stuff.

maybe this is the better investment. buying and selling rx100s doesn’t make that much fun

    1. Until the RX100M3 was rumored, I would agree that the GM1 would be a better option for low light.

But now, with the faster lens and EVF, the RX100M3 is tempting, particulalrly as it is still smaller than a GM1 + 12-32 zoom.

    2. Your RX100 doesnt suddenly stop working, when the new model is released.
Its your problem that youhave an itch to have the latest greatest, rather than be able to skip a gen or two

      1. My primary camera is a canon 5d classic… So that is not true. I’m looking for a great second camera with a fast lens. So for me this camera would be the better choice.

Just thought it might be more clever to have let’s say a small gm1 and just change lenses from time to time…

  33. If the XVAC codec is included in the new RX100, no way I’m buying the A6000. I predicted last week the next A7/8/9000 would have the new video codec, laong with a better EVF and the A6000’s AF. Thanks to Sony for FINALLY starting to drop the mushy garbage that is the avchd included in all A and E mount cameras to date. Looking forward to the A7s pricing too. I want one to pair with my A7 and GH4.

    1. Chris, I’ve been trying to decide whether to go for the a6000 or wait for the RX100m3 – for really nice family / holiday pics and video. I’d be very grateful for an explanation as to why the new codec makes you say you’d avoid the a6000 and presumably favour the rx100m3 (albeit not an ILC)? Thanks, Dan

      1. The old codec is only 24 or 28mbps and the new one 50mbps. Plus it is probably more efficient in term of moiré and aliasing. A6000 is a completely different camera. Sensor is way bigger, allowing smaller DoF with a different look. But the camera is bigger. If you want portability before all, take the RX100. If you don’t mind the a6000 size and plan to buy more lenses (like 50mm f1.8) and not keep the shit kit lens then take the A6000. If you did not understand my words (aperture, DoF, different lenses…) then take the RX100 😉

      2. Dan, Sony’s use of XAVCS in the A7s and presumably the RX100M3 allows video to be recorded at 50Mbps. That’s nearly double the data of AVCHD. So you’ll get clearer video, whether you record at 50p, 50i or 24p frame rates.

It’s like shooting still images in Fine JPEG setting rather than Normal JPEG.

      3. I’ve owned the A77, A99, Nex 5n, Nex 7 and now the A7, all have the same 28mb/s AVCHD, and its all very soft in 1080/30/24p. 60p is complete mush. I know there are other factors at hand because there’s line skipping or pixel binning, but the current Sony video codecs leave a lot to be desired. There just isn’t enough data to keep complex scenes from being soft. The XVAC is a higher bitrate and looks to be a more efficient codec.

The 1080p &4k coming from the AX100 – which uses the same sensor as the RX100m2 – is nothing short of stunning. The A7s preview videos are incredible. The GH4 produces some amazing video. All have higher bitrates than the tired, old AVCHD Sony has been putting in its cameras for years, its the same as the original Nex5 from 2010 and its really showing its age. As a hybrid shooter, I’m not spending any more on low-quality video codec’s. I just got a GH4 and I will be buying a A7s to compliment my A7. I may pick up the Rx100m3 as my everyday camera and replace my current Nex 5n/7.

      4. To follow up – personally, I want a backup to the A7/s that can use the same lenses, which is why I was looking at the A6000. But I’d be willing to bet this summer we see another A?000 camera with XVAC, Sony’s high end EVF and the new AF – and hopefully the touch screen that makes it so easy to move the AF point without pushing any buttons. The A6000 is a tempting replacement for my Nex cams, but I’m hesitant to pull the trigger with XVAC in the pipeline.

    2. To be fair to Sony AVCHD at 24/28Mbps is pretty good from the latest sensors (RX100, RX10, A6000) provided it’s not pushed to 50/60p. There’s just not enough bandwidth to render detailed, artefact-free frames at that rate. Stick to 50/60i or 24p and by all accounts it looks great.

That said, I look forward to XAVCS giving my 50Mbps for 24p video as I’ll be able to extract some very clean 2MP frame grabs from it.

      1. No. AVCHD is still AVCHD. Very compressed, crap for motion, crap for grading and blocky high ISO footage. It is crap.

Think of the RX10 as good AVCHD cam? Only when its not panning.
The RX100 does not have a good AVCHD either. I have the mark I version.
I recorded with the Mark II and it is not any better.
I am pretty sure that the a6000 will not be any better either since the main thing holding all of these cameras back is AVCHD and its 24/28mbps constraints. It was good to have this before fast cards were the norm, but now it is pretty redundant if not useless (except for anyone not looking to do anything to the footage like grading or colour correcting or needs to film motion and keep details)

        1. I totally agree but you must not forget that most buyers of the cameras will fit just into this category: “except for anyone not looking to do anything to the footage like grading or colour correcting or needs to film motion and keep details”.

I personally know no one who color grades videos from a compact.

          1. I do, still, from RX100. The size is unbeatable and the 60p are great mixed with the software and hardware OSS. Very good for slow motion walk following without a rig.

  34. What I really want is a monochrome A7S with built in recorder. I will gladly open my wallet and look the other way for that. Any time now…..

    1. There are a bunch of Leica Monochrom tests online (see Tony Northrup’s on YouTube, for example) that show the so called dynamic range claims of the Monocrhrom to be not as good as a Canon 5DM3 color file which is to mono. Of course, the Canon camera and lenses are much bigger and don’t have that Leica halo, and the mono must be really FUN to use, but I was disappointed to hear that the mono capture doesn’t add up to much. It sounded magical. I’d image that shooting RAW + mono JPG on the A7s would yield better results. Sadly, I have neither the A7s nor the Monocrhom so am speculating based on reviews…

      1. Really good point- I wasn’t aware of the 5DM3’s performance in comparison either. I still wait for the A7S despite it’s projected high costs. If what you mention shows up in test results I’m pretty sure it’ll be my next purchase.

    1. As it’s just appearing now I guess SOny’s only just finished writing the XAVCS codec for the latest Bionz processor. I agree, crazy the A6000 didn’t get it, but as they all use basically the same processor there’s a reasonable chance the A6000 and RX10 will get XAVCS in a bios update. Fingers crossed.

      1. It would be nice to have a firmware update of all current models in production with the new codec. It will be a boon for current owners.

        1. Yeah, but i think that sony will never do such thing…
          : (
Firmware update = bug fixes / support to new lenses (AF)

    1. The Tamron 24-70 f2.8 lens costs as much as this whole camera is going to cost. So how is it too short for the price?

      1. Its a point and shoot and therefore for the price the lens is too short. I already have the RX100 and was looking to upgrading but not at this price point/lens.

    2. Buy a camera with a smaller sensor with a lens that meets your range requirement – there are a lot to choose from. Cheaper too.

  35. Still no GPS? Or slow motion video? Or 4:3 aspect ratio video, like 1440×1080, which uses the full wide angle capacity of the lens, not the cropped 16:9 Sony always uses?

    1. 1 – No. 2- Yeah, it does 50/60p so you can do 1/2 speed. 3- Yes. The other RX100 models do 1440×1080 already.

      1. 1 – Too bad for an otherwise excellent travel camera. More useful than WiFi!
2 – Even Panasonic’s little TZ40 compact does 720p/100fps and VGA/200fps. I was hoping for something like that.
3 – That’s right, but the aspect ratio is still the cropped 16:9 (with rectangular pixels). I was hoping for a video format which uses the whole sensor area for maximum wide angle. (Correction: RX100/M2 sensors have 3:2, not 4:3 aspect ratio, which would make an unusual 1620×1080 HD format.)

  36. This rumored Sony RX100iii could be the ultimate compact camera. The Fuji X30 will have its work cut out for it

    1. I wish manufacturers would recognize that these are enthusiast and pro backups and would weather seal them. That would make them better travel cameras as well.

    2. Agreed. Just hope we start seeing some rumours about the X30. Perhaps the announcement of the RX100iii will change that. Still think Sony will not sell its 1″ sensor to competitors as the 1″ size could be the optimal quality/size trade-off and distinct competitive edge for Sony.

  37. I just bought an A6000 (nice camera, that’s for sure), wondering if I should return it and buy this instead (once it comes out). I want small, but I also want a camera that can take good action shots (kid plays futbal, basketball, etc) and low light. Any insight would be great.

    1. I was about to buy the a6000 and am having exactly the same dilemma (plus I want to shoot really nice family video). Sorry to hijack your question 😉 Appreciate any responses…

      1. I don’t think I will return it. Used it to photo my son’s game tonight, the A6000 definitely has incredibly fast autofocus (like Sony says) and a speedy 11FPS. Love the camera modes as well (chose sport and it nailed almost every shot). Most certainly I need to dive deeper into photo education pool, right now I am not to adept at the manual settings, but with this camera there’s allot to explore.

All I need now is a longer zoom lens. What that tells me? That the MKIII wouldn’t suffice, as the zoom isn’t long enough for this situation (it would be fine for photo’s for his basketball, but not futball). And, as equally importantly, an APS-C sensor (it is an improvement of the one in the MKI/II/III).

  38. Is it really THAT terrible? I just bought the Sony A6000 and didn’t open it, but reading this makes me depressed. The AVCHD codec, after reading all this, seems so ancient.

Do i open and enjoy or wait out??! Honestly, I just want to make high quality YOUTUBE videos for my products..

Do i dare hope they offer a firmware update for the sony a6000?
