Well, this is really a surprise. I have been told by many trusted sources that Sony decided the very last days to split the announcement of the new cameras! The A77M2 is coming in a couple of hours (10am London time) while the RX100M3 will be announced later (likely May 15). UPDATE: Also the A7s pricing announcement has been delayed!

Add to this that Sony also decided to make different announcements in different regions. As you can see from the Hong Kong flyer (image below) the A77MII will be announced on may 7 in Hong Kong. A bit of a mess I know 🙂

Follow the A77MII announcement live here on SonyAlphaRumors on May 1 at:
– 2am (02:00) San Francisco
– 5am (05:00) New York time
– 10 am (10:00) London time
– 11 am (11:00) Berlin time
– 8 pm (20:00) Tokyo time

RX100M3 announcement likely on May 15!

          1. My guess is the day of release…They’ll just ship them and say something like…”I dunno, maybe 2300?” and see if any sell.

  1. All this hype for just a incremental upgrade of the ILCA-77M2 ?? that’s difficult to believe, there is more……

  2. I wouldn’t even be surprised if they splitted the A77II announcement into two separate events. Sony’s marketing team is a joke.

  3. Well, we know everything about the RX100M3 so who cares! Still some details about the A77M2 we don’t know for sure… so bring it.

  4. smart. The best marketing Sony ever does is via press release, so I think the more press releases the better for them! 🙂

  5. Hopefully, something else for Alpha will be announced today besides A77-II, and NEX / RX stuff separately.

    1. They will officially be announcing the death of A mount probably….at least judging by the responses from some people here over the past few days.

      1. They can’t do it along with A77-II. They will have to have a separate event to announce the death of A-Mount 😛

  6. Haha. They probably got realized that the A77II will be overshadowed by the RX100MIII, just like the RX10 got kind of eclipsed by the A7/r. Its a weird feeling to see Sony marketing actually learn from its mistakes.

    1. 1890 called…

      Actually, the telegraphed in. They said: –. — / -… .- -.-. -.- / .– …. . .-. . / -.– — ..- / -.-. .- — . / ..-. .-. — — –..– / -.. .. .–. … …. .. – .-.-.-

      1. One thing must be noted though: the daily amount of whining went up lately, but so are the humorous comments… I had a good laugh!

    1. Well in that case, we’ll make an exception.

*Hiroshi, let’s announce them all at once; jintoku is unhappy!*

  7. Fellow SAR readers.
A few individuals are of the dont say that mentallity and are trying to prevent me from speaking on SAR.
If any of my comments offend anyone PLEASE dont read then they are just my views.
These people are currentl disputing and challenging every statement I make.
    Insulting me on every post
Impersonatong my screen name..and anything else they can think of to harass me into remaining silent.
I plan to continue to speak despite this which is sure to aggrevate these individuals .
I am not able to discourage then from doing this but please know that I do not approve of thier behavior and appolpgize that you are being subjected to thier actions.
I am quite certain we will hear from some of then now and they will tell you why SAR needs to be protected from me.

    1. I don’t think there’s some sort of vast conspiracy to keep you silent, rather I think some people have gotten tired of the grand standing and whining some people here like to partake in. You’ve been singled out due to some serious complaining about specs, unfortunately, but you’re far from the only one doing this sort of thing.
Note: I’m not one of those who are sockpuppeting you, but the drama is kind of silly.

      1. There are far more dont say that comments on sar than actual comments.
No one needs to read any comment they dont want to.
I do not think anyone needs to be protected from these opinions even if they dissagree.
I also make many postive statements but the issue at stake here is the ability for all of us to express our opinions.

        1. There is a difference between simply expressing an opinion and repeatedly beating people to death with one.

You seem to lack any kind of self awareness and so you’re completely unable to understand why you get all this grief from people. Have you EVER stopped to consider why it happens to you?

          1. If you religiously follow every post I make you see repetitions as my opinions are not constantly changing just to please you.
Most people do not read every word I say.
I say hundreds of totally different things yet you say only one..that I repeat myself.
How many times do you intend to tell everyone that I repeat myself.
I do not intend to talk less because of your childish atteempts to bully me into silence.
I do however sometimes speak more if I choose to answer you.

          2. You are bullying a moderately backward person. That is not nice.
You may say to stop talking and protect SAR from me, but I actually don’t know what you’re talking about. Who is searching for me and how will they rescue me?
And when I say I paint genitalia of animals, I mean I actually paint the animals genitalia, not paint a canvas.
I will now make a tpyo.
Why do people keep asking me if I know the muffin man?
I do not understand this question.
I will not allow my childish dribble to prevent you from talking on this forum.
            Wait
            Reverse that.
Where am I? What just happened?
            Megapixels, are you there?

          3. All these peaple are iether just one..under differrent names…or a few of your friends that think this is fun
In case you actually do not realize this is not fun it is deliberate harrassment and bullying.
Im sure if you were bullied in school you have experienced that..but I expect you spent more time doing the bullying.

        2. This is a discussion forum. If you offer an opinion, don’t be surprised if people comment on it.

As Graeme B said, you don’t seem to have ever considered why you attract such derision. Also, I don’t think you are helping your cause by singling yourself out with the above ‘open letter’.

I for one welcome your posts, and enjoy reading them.

    2. You are basically dealing with ONE jerk. By changing his name on every new post he pretends to speak for MANY. If there are a hundred posts on any topic you may be sure that 50 of them are from the same imposter.

      1. You are probably correct and I could make a reasonable quess who.
However I do not have access to his url and he hides behind his anonymity so I do notnot want to falsely acuse the wrong person.

    3. Good on you Barry. Its obvious that someone on here found your details to ring you up knowing you would post so they could make fun of you. Shame on them.

  8. They probably don’t want one product to overshadow the other, like when the rx10 was announced with A7 and didn’t get the attention Sony wanted.

  9. complete bs. Absolutely no real photographers use sony’s wonky dslr platform. All eyes are on the a7s’s price point and release date. Each time they delay they lose more and more customers. It shouldn’t have been announced until they had a price point and targeted release date.

    1. It’ll be in the range of 1000-10000 dollars and it will be released sometime between mid 2014 and 2020. I have this on good authority.

        1. you mean FILM canon camera? real photographer use film and they are mostly replaced by digital photographers

          1. Really odd. I swear that lens looks like it’s:

            A) photoshopped
            B) on a nikon body.

            But it’s still a good pic 🙂

    2. Actually plenty of, “REAL PHOTOGRAPHERS” use A-Mounts so shut up and take your comments somewhere’s else.

    3. All eyes are on the a7s, but nobody wants it? And nobody wants it, because Sony supposedly delayed a rumored announcement date? Makes sense.

  10. “The A77M2 is coming in a couple of hours (10am London time)”

Today is April 30th. How it coming in couple of hours?

    1. That’s couple of hours in MicroFourThirds time. To convert it to full frame, you need to multiply it by 2, which should give you the effective time.

    2. Now it’s 8pm London time, so 14 hours till 10am tomorrow. You wrote that an hour ago, makes actually 15 hours.

15 hours is still within the range that I’d call “a couple of hours”.

  11. Well.. it makes some kind of sense, separate the announcements of the three lines, the A-mount, the E-mount and the RX, this will keep the excitement to costumers of each line, and at the same time avoid the stupid battle of what is better.

  12. Maybe Sony had their plan all along and they’re just dicking with rumor sites by throwing out random days and products? If I was someone who was supposed to leak info from a Corp and there were rumor sites about my product, I’d screw with people regularly.

    1. I’m glad I made myself a ham sandwich for lunch today. Mmm…ham.

Anyone else have random, meaningless tidbits to post? Here’s the place!

      1. Ok, look everyone…

First off, I don’t agree with Barry’s methods. But seriously…just leave the guy alone. You don’t have to respond to him (or even read the posts if it bothers you that much). He’s not trolling us (at least not intentionally). He’s just expressing opinions. He’s an artist; he’s allowed to be eccentric.

And I agree that I think it’s a good move on Sony’s part to show some dedication/technological exclusivity to this A-mount launch event so the camera doesn’t get diluted by other releases. They’re undoubtedly showing the A-mount crowd some love, in their own way.

        1. I think Disqus is messing up. It showed both of these comments as having been made by the same person moments ago.

      2. Let me guess; people belittled you and made fun of you in high school and now you have a chance to do it to someone else. Get a life! It was funny for a while but now it’s getting old.

    2. +1
Because I already have the RX100M2 with the optional EVF; no need to upgrade, from what I have read on SAR. I probably will buy the A77M2 because I do not own a modern APSC Sony camera and would like to have one.

  13. For those of us invested in the A-mount system, it’s nice to see an A-mount event, instead of A-mount simply being a footnote in an RX or E-mount event. Though if Sony really intends there to be an A-mount future (instead of just stringing it along for a bit for current users), they will need to re-fresh the A58 soon as well, and preferably the A65.

    1. Would be nice if they put in the market 2 aps-c a mount (a58mII / a77mII) and 2 full frame a mount (a88 / a99mII) or 3 (a full frame to compete against D4S & 1DX).

  14. If tomorrow is A mount news only, then the A77II reveal will have to be much more than just a camera presentation. It will need to include exclusive information regarding the A mount line if it is to be well received. Tomorrow’s your big day Sony, don’t f it up.

    1. Tomorrow is the “day of the A-mount”
For one day only all the glory will go to A-mount and A-mount users can die happy knowing Sony didn’t abandon it but just let it fade away.
      :-/

  15. I just translated the Japanese text. It reads…

“In the spirit of a57 to a58 evolution, the a77MII now equipped with plastic lens mount, reduced LCD resolution, and absolutely no flash system worth using”.
    “Have a nice day…. s.u..c…k…..e……..r…………..s”.

    1. I’m sorry, but it seems to be Chinese. In that case it states:

“As result of the increased amount of whining about the strategy of the Alpha division, we will introduce AWM (Anti Whining Mode) for all cameras. In addition a new app is released providing tips to enjoy life, prevent depressions and provide WNC (Whining Noise Cancellation). And oh, we will equip our new A77II with both old and new hot-shoes to satisfy our most demanding customers.”

    2. Well, I’ve seen no evidence that a plastic lens mount is in any way inferior to metal, I rarely use the LCD and I use almost exclusively dumb flash triggers – so none of those would impede my ability to take half decent photos would they?

    3. As opposed to the same-old-sensor spirit, the oil-spill spirit and Da-Fuq-is-that-lame-retro-design-for-too-much-money spirit.

  16. Wow wow wow! Big deal this split announcement! Who is going to be able to sleep for the next 2 weeks?

  17. Last day decision changes?
So in theory, many reporters could leak rx100m3 and a7s price info tomorrow without violating NDA, if sony failed to reach them to sign new NDA.

    1. I really know that is hard to believe. And If I would be on th other side of this website I would also tend to think the admin is making up things. But there was really a clear “Miscomunication” from Sony. it wasn’t clear that there woudl eb two separate announcements.

    2. Sony may have realised there were too few leaks about the RX100 MIII. They need two more weeks with leaks and rumor talks to heighten the temperature before the première!

  18. I don’t understand why the A7S price is a secret, why do we have to wait to get the price? what sony think they getting with this approach? this is sucks.

    1. Who cares. Its a niche camera that most people aren’t interested in. Low resolution, and the world’s crappiest burst rate.

You’d be better of buying a second hand A700, and a 4K camcorder.

  19. Baby e-trolls, “Tomorrow’s The Alphas Day’

Its really kind of funny to read e-troll comments. They seem to be either genuinely jealous or just taking temper tantrums out of sheer desperation.

I kinda of feel sorry for them. Sony is releasing a APS-C Alpha camera tomorrow that is going to take away their bragging rights.

Hopefully the rumoured lenses are for the A-Mount, because its the only mount that really matters.

      1. I think he’s poking fun of the 99 e-troll comments already posted below that have nothing to do with the A77M2.

They’re posted by Canon, Nikon or the baby e-trolls fanboys screaming for attention.

        1. Yup the e-cry-babies are defiantly going to be posting some serious junk tonight. Maybe they should take up a new hobby like outdoor photography.

          1. They can’t because its raining outside, and they’re little NEX cameras aren’t dust/weather-sealed.

Maybe they can save up and buy a real camera.

          2. Kinda of my point genius. They spend too much time posting junk, and virtually no time posting pictures of their supposed “Pro-Photography”

          3. That why they’re called trolls. The hide in their parent’s basements, and post nothing but, “JUNK”.

They don’t post pictures because, we would laugh at most of them. This forum is full of e-mount users amateurs masquerading as something other than novices.

          4. People should be free to do what they want and if they are happy with what they do then that’s excellent. I would certainly not judge them or be offensive in any way. So I dont understand the reason for such offensiveness.

  20. its a smart move to make the announcement of the a77II and the rx100III at different times, this way both cameras have more media coverage.

  21. RX100 Mk3 lens is really f/4.9-7.6. Not camera for people who understand photography. Sony have become an f-stop cheater like the m43 gang.

    1. Still though, the RX100 mk3 will be a great little pocket camera. If you can stand the Sony colors (I prefer Nikon D800/D800e). Actually any Nikon colors.

    2. People who understand photography know how to get the images they want, from the camera they want to use.

edit: before anyone gets their panties in a bunch, there IS such a thing as the right tool for the job, but pretending that there is no job for this particular tool is plain trolling.

      1. It’s a shame that the f-stop cheaters have fooled you. People who understand photography know how to calculate what images they need, to achieve equivalent results to the FF camera they should really be using.

        1. You do realize that FF isn’t the largest sensor format, right? Of course you do, you would just rather troll.

        2. Everybody should be using medium format, FF is only for people who don’t understand photography.
All FF camera makers have become f-stop cheaters as they don’t put MF equivalent f-numbers on the lenses.

  22. I have seen no speculation to this effect, but it could be the the new hybrid af system of the A77II is going to be a very big deal, combining the strengths of the A6000’s on-sensor PDAF with the slt’s already strong PDAF, in the manner of the A99, but with significant improvements in every aspect of the system. Could be very interesting.

    1. It’ll be at least twice as fast.

There is a strong possibility (wink wink) that the A77M2 may perform a certain 22.1mp full frame DSLR, for a quarter of the price.

      1. “There is a strong possibility (wink wink) that the A77M2 may outperform a certain 22.1mp full frame DSLR, for a quarter of the price.”

        1. If you’re referring to the 5d3, there is 0 percent chance it will AF as accurately, be as good in low light, take video as well, or be the smash success the Canon is. I certainly hope you’re not trying to compare APS-C to a FF sensor. Surely you mean another camera. 🙂

          1. “0 percent chance it will AF as accurately”
            – Why not? Sony has had 3 years to refine the AF system.

“Be as good in low light”
            – True, it’s unlikely, but if it’s close that will be a success.

            “Take video as well”

            – Well, it will have AF during video, the tilt-screen, a stereo mic and the MIS can adapt to XLR with ease so the act of capturing the video will be far superior versus the 5d3. With S-log/XAVC, the stock video quality could be as good (magic lantern hacks notwithstanding).

“I certainly hope you’re not trying to compare APS-C to a FF sensor.”

APS-c is potentially better for action / sports (for those who cannot afford to shoot with a 400mm/4 or 500mm/4 lens).

          2. He’s obvious a Canon fan or an e-troll, whose about to get a rude awakening tomorrow at 10am. Don’t take his e-cry-baby bait.

    2. Slt’s already strong PDAF? The a99/a77 can’t track a subject to save its life – there’s a reason you don’t see SONY on the sidelines of any major sports. The only interesting thing will be if the stupid 1/2 stop of light robbing SLT mirror will be gone now. Sony’s last great camera was the Alpha 900 and the NEX-5n.

  23. “RX100 Mk3 lens is really f/4.9-7.6. …” NO, that’s wrong. If I have to take pics I’ll set everything for F1.8-2.8 as that’s what the lens will allow.
A smaller sensor is not ‘linear’/equivalence or so does not apply (BSI sensor after all!) etc.
    It’s not that easy.
The Mk3 may offer “near m43 IQ” (but also that is to be taken with a grain of salt, because … what do we compare in relation to what else ?).
Sony is not ‘cheating’ … this cam will probably break new ground size vs IQ as the previous RX100 cams did.

    1. You have little understanding of photography. The lens is f/4.9-7.6 regarding all photographic properties that are controlled by aperture. Sorry you lack knowledge of basic physics.

      1. Yabokkie is exactly right. The light gathering, depth of field, etc. is F/4.9-7.6. The light intensity might be 1.8-2.8, but not the gathering ability. Stick a bucket in the rain next to a bucket almost 1/3rd the size – which gathers more water? If you’re going to say 24-70 FF equiv, it’s also F/4.9 – 7.6 FF equivalent for depth of field and low light ability. Period. Physics don’t change.

        1. Yet, in terms of the exposure, the lens is correctly labelled. Physically, it is also correctly labelled. f/2.8 means the aperture, at the long end, is:

          >>> (70/2.7)/2.8
          9.25925925925926

          ~9.26mm

That’s the “benefit” of the crop, equiv FOV with less focal length (and, hence, physical opening for that focal length).

Low-light performance is somewhat subjective (in the sense that, if I’m either happy with the performance up to the highest ISO I ever use, or I never take it out of base ISO) it’s kind of moot. And I’m still able to obtain the exposure I want using the labelled f/ values.

Similarly, DoF control (more specifically SHALLOW DoF) is widely assumed to be “better”, but if it’s not used in practice (or the opposite effect is desired) than it’s not really a “limitation” at all.

          1. You typed a lot but said little. I don’t care what it “says” on the lens – it is what it is – a small less than quarter frame sized camera. Period. No camera is perfect – if you want to lug around a huge DSLR that’s fine, but please don’t pretend that this tiny sensor + lens combo is anywhere near a FF D800/600 @ F/2.8.

          2. Noted. And when you are using your D800 @ f/2.8, please don’t pretend that this tiny sensor + lens is anywhere near a MF Pentax 645Z @ f2.8…

      2. One such property (or a portion thereof) that is controlled by aperture is, EXPOSURE. In that respect, the lens is as it is labelled (within tolerances).

Speaking of the lack of basic physics knowledge, how is it you don’t understand what the ‘f’ stands for in the aperture denomination?

        1. The f stands for focal length. The f-stop is the focal length divided by aperture. But why you don’t understand that exposure is not a photographic concept?

          1. 1) I was addressing yabokkie specifically.

            2) You are being pedantic. Exposure of an image (however you decide to expose) is quite literally EVERYTHING in photography; It is the very act of making the image.

Aside from that, I’m really not sure what your point is. Change the values in-camera (and in all literature) so the exposure for the same scene (FOV) in two cameras requires different settings. That wouldn’t be confusing at all…

***EDIT: The above comment showed it was posted by ‘Sony_rules’ (even in my notifications). Not sure if that’s a discus bug, or if there’s some real trolling going on here.

          2. Exposure has little to do with photography. We are trying to take images with a certain DoF and image quality (noise levels and diffraction) that is the same as we would achieve with a FF camera. A picture that is equivalent in every way relevant to photography (not exposure) to the picture we would take with a FF camera.

  24. All you guys should be banned for life for making me laugh my ass off! This is serious stuff, Sony’s future is at stake here. I hope they don’t announce the new ultra wide-angle in two parts , 12mm to….. ( to be announced in two weeks)

  25. Yes, it is a joke! SAR is the joke. But, of course as this site always does, blame Sony, said they changed their plans, rather than the truth, that SAR is clue less!

  26. Jeez people need to calm the heck down. The best camera is the one you have with you, who cares about if you know camera specs better than the another person. If you like the capabilities and the results from your camera then just enjoy it. Some of the worlds most historic photos have be taken on equipment far less sophisticated and probably even cheaper than the phone in your pocket.

  27. Full frame is the correct sensor size for everyone. If we are unfortunate enough to have a smaller sensor, we need to think as if we were using a full frame sensor. This is a message nobody can deny.

        1. No, there’s a bug that makes it seem like different posts were made by the same user. I’ve sometimes responded to someone, who then turned out to be someone else.

        2. For posterity, I tried to delete and repost this with the single image, but it seems are though Discus/SAR just assigned that to “Guest”. Oh well. The proof is there. Trolls abound.

    1. you are right. unfortunately not everyone can afford it. but anyway unfortunately there’s only 1 camera in the world that is full frame has ibis and can record video. the outdated a99.

      1. I own two full frame Sony cameras, and two APS-C. So I know what I’m talking about.

Almost all A99 users also own a A77.

All serious/competent photographers should own both APS-C, and Full Frame DSLRs in their Pelican Cases. All serious/competent photographers should strive to develop the necessary skills to take advantage of the strengths of, both APS-C, and 35mm sized sensors.

APS-C is simply the better option for those who use large tele-photo zooms/primes, or are into macro photography.

        Almost all 70-200mm, 70-300mm, 70-400mm, 300mm f2.8, 500mm f/4.0, and 500mm f/8.0 reflex owners would disagree with you. Almost all 30mm, 50mm, 100mm, and 200mm macro owners would also disagree with you.

        1. @Photomeister is obvious a shill. I’d ignore his pathetic attempt at logic. I think he should go away.

    2. You eyeball is the only correct sensor Spanky.

Your either an avid paint sniffer, or just naive. There is no correct sensor size.

    1. Ahem…would you want to be in their shoes, going against the grain, bold new endeavors, trying to keep it all together? But your comment certainly invoked quite an entertaining mental image! 😉

  28. I am in Hong Kong. Fail to understand why they ask you to register by facebook login but not “my sony” login for a Sony Event.

  29. A77M2

After reading the posts below I can definitely see that the e-trolls, and Canon/Nikon fan boys are out in full force, trying to derail potential A77M2 purchases.

The A77M2 is still launching in a couple of hours, and they have right to be upset. The A77M2 will once again redefine the DSLR through innovation, and sheer performance.

It’ll probably outperform all APS-C DSLRs ever produced.

    1. I agree 100%. Its competitors stand no chance in the APS-C DSLR segment. Sony’s cameras in this segment are unmatched. Even Sony’s junkie, plastic, un-weather-sealed A6000 outperforms anything Canon or Nikon have ever produced in the APS-C format to date.

Canon, and Nikon APS-C DSLR cameras are completely boring, and really brought nothing new this year.

So let think different, and all buy A77M2

    2. “It’ll probably outperform all APS-C DSLRs ever produced.”

Yeah right, and you’re not trolling? A-mount is dead, dead, dead.
      Dan

    3. Agreed. I can smell the troll-crap from across the atlantic. From what I hear the A77M2 may even outperform some of the really high end DSLRs from competing manufactures, who’ve paid like paid shills, and trolls to post troll crap.

  30. The A77M2 is already making rounds with the reviewers. Apparently they’ve been silenced by a big NDA. So we’re out of luck to gain any insight on how it performs.

But it’ll probably trounce anything its competitors offer for a very long time.

    1. I may or may not also be field testing the A77II (as it may or may not say on the camera).
The only thing I’ll say is that A99 owners will drool over this camera. So will 5diii owners (as this is my…ahem…was my bread and butter camera). It’s a jack of all trades and master of nearly all of them.
      Yes. It’s that good.

        1. A6000 dynamic range took a hit. It performed worse than a three year old NEX sensor. Check it out on DxO.

A77 users wouldn’t accept any performance hit. The want it all.

        2. Its not even close. SLT sensors are designed from the ground up for SLT cameras, they involved massive differences in circuitry. They are designed to operate in concert with the semi-transparent mirror.

So the A77II sensor will perform much better than the cheap A6000 sensor.

        3. Those specs are from an three year old A77 not the new A77II. Expect something faster, more accurate, better low light tracking, weather sealed, higher dynamic range, and greater ISO performance.

          Its a semi-pro DSLR not a plastic mirror-less camera

      1. Martin detected

Apparently he isn’t aware of the 33% increase in the new mirror’s efficiency.

A SAR forum member actually removed his A99’s mirror to demonstrate the minimal impact incurred by the mirror.

        Maybe he’s from another planet.

    1. Wow, did he really did post something that dumb. The A77 remains faster than all APS-C DSLR cameras ever designed, because of that mirror.

  31. screw sony.constantly new cameras coming out confusing all the users and making buyers fools: rx1r not even one software update, same as many other cameras including a99. then the whole FE and FA crap confusion. rx100mk2 just came out, the buyers will not be happy to see they just got a fix solution and not a real new camera.
