As I reported before you still will have to wait a couple of weeks to learn the price and preorder of the Sony A7s. But if you want to record in 4K you can already preorder the Atomos Shogun at BHphoto (Click here). By the way, ThePhoBlographer posted a hands on with the A7s: “From the JPEG results and prints that we saw, this camera has the absolute cleanest ISO 3200 output that we’ve ever seen.”

And here is the next price drop:

The NEX-6 with kit lens now sells for even less at Amazon US (Click here) and BHphoto (with extra SD card). $524 is a real bargain!

And the $300 off on the A6000+16-70mm Zeiss is now back at Amazon US (Click here) and Adorama (Click here).

  1. Boy they really know how to leverage all the promised advantages of that Sony MIS hot shoe.

    Stunning ingenuity here!

      1. Is there any potential for a cheaper option? Maybe I missed it. It’s just over the tipping point IMO in terms of price. I don’t have a problem with an external recorder, but damn, that is some serious coin.

        1. Any new technology is expensive until it gains traction.

Remember the days when 256mb compact flash cards cost many hundreds of dollars? I certainly do…!

That being said, I’m sure cheaper options will surface sooner than later.

        2. If you look at competing products, you have to pay extra for whatever 4K camera you use for raw recording. This can cost $700 for a codec update.

We don’t charge for that, you get everything straight out of the box because you shouldn’t be limited to the camera you own today.

          Cheers,
          -Brooke | atomos.com

          1. Also I’ll add that you record 4K in ProRes on the Shogun, this is what most of our customers will use as their editing format vs Cinema DNG.

    1. GH4 is undoubtedly a great camera, but it’s not the tool for everyone. It may be for you, but if you want high ISO or better control of depth of field, there is nothing like a full frame camera. Each tool has advantages and disadvantages and you touting your own choice as the “best” not necessarily something that everyone will agree with. After all, you can buy a Chevy Volt. Or a Tesla. They’re both electric cars but let’s face it. They have slightly different audiences.
Oh, you might want to actually record to an external hd as well, even if you own a GH4.

      1. I only put the choises that we have to get 4K

        I own a a99 / a77 / a560, 3 flashes and 12 Sony lenses

        I love Sony products

I woud like to buy the combo (a7s + lens + atomos)

I’m wainting for the real price.

        1. If you watch our video interviews online, Jeromy Young the CEO of Atomos has already given a price point for the A7s. 🙂

I can’t wait to get the A7s in the office to play around with, the image from the AX100 is way better than I thought it was going to be for a 4K Camcorder.

          1. Yes, i saw the video, Brooke. : )
I’ll wait for a7s reviews (the final version)
but i really like the specs.
            Thanks.

    2. huge difference in price but the a7s combo will be superior in terms of overall imagequality and extreme good lowlight

  2. Question?
I know there are rumors that the Atomos Shogun is the official recorder for the A7S but has Sony made any official anouncement that they will not be making one themselves?
I find it difficult to believe that sony plans to depend on a third party as the sole provider of a 4k recorder for thier new camera.

    1. An interesting question, for sure. I would imagine that Sony is working on developing their own, as a companion product for the small 4K cameras. From Sony’s perspective, it seems like a perfect opportunity for more accessories sales. And from the user’s perspective for those who don’t need 4K recording, it keeps the cost, size and weight down on the base cameras.

      1. Atomos has a great relationship Sony (Japan), they have been proactive in making sure more of their cameras support a clean signal out of HDMI so users can record into Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD for our recorders.

Logical is right about not only keeping the cost of the unit down, but also Sony has a Cinema Camera range, doing ProRes in their consumer line up doesn’t fit with their audience.

        Cheers,
        -Brooke | atomos.com

        1. Thank you for the information, Brooke! I am personally just getting into video (mostly a stills guy) but your products look VERY interesting, indeed. I am very glad to hear of such a close relationship between Atomos and Sony!

          1. They approached us about pairing up with the Shogun, they pushed it, that’s why we announced our product early.

It was interesting hearing about the A7s when they first spoke to us. They are passionate about it and believe it’s a great camera for video.

Having seen the 4K recordings it looks impressive for a little package.

  3. I wait for two things regarding the A7S. Anyone have a guess as to how many steps of DR it will have? 16EV being to optimistic? How about clean ISO. I’ve seen the videos but it’s still hard to tell. I’m hoping for a clean 6400- and I mean clean. No NR applied with a high level of detail. Those two things and I will still buy it. My first e mount camera.

    1. The sample video with the guy smoking fish had some shots at pretty high ISO’s with some really clean shadows, there was a NAB video that showed 80,000 looking really clean too. 25,600 on the A7s looks better than 3200 on the GH3 IMHO. This is going to be a phenomenal low light camera. I’m buying one, even at $3,000 its a bargain for S-log and a full frame sensor with full sensor readout. 16 stops is not likely, but something in the 13-14 range looks doable, which for video would be amazing considering the 5d3 raw isn’t even 12.

    2. Yeah, I was going to agree with Chris, 16 stops is crazy. Arri and RED don’t hit 16 stops except in an over-cranked HDR mode (to my understanding), and the EPIC shoots at 13.5 in ProRes. I have a BMPCC and it’s DN of 13 stops is absolutely incredible. I also shoot on a FS-100, which has 11.5 stops, and it’s pretty darn good too. It doesn’t matter though, Sony isn’t going to output an image from their $3,000 camera via a $2,000 external recorder that stomps on their $50,000 cameras.

  4. the so called A6000 deal with the 16-70 zeis, is strange, why, it confirms that this lens could be replaced indeed, just as some rumors suggest. in Europe the A6000Z kit is still not available, there are some rumor from a sales man = the delay has to do with some new type of this same lens which would be part of the A6000Z kit.

    1. Just walked out of sony store in NY with the A6000 and both the 16-50mm & 16-70 lens with the $300 of deal.

    2. The 1670z is NOT gonna be replaced anytime soon. It is an amazing lens, one the the best lens in mirrorless system.

  5. I am waiting for my gh4 . I see

    Atomos Shogun 7″ 4K for 2.000$ + price a7s = CRAZY , JUST FOR 4K

      1. We are excited about the Shogun with A7s and the GH4. The Shogun will be the best 4K recorder on the market, this is why Sony worked with us and launched the A7s with the Shogun at NAB.

The Shogun will also not require any upgrade costs for Cinema DNG for Raw. I think the Pros are going to be very happy with this recorder.

        -Brooke | atomos.com

    1. What is it with people these days. “Just for 4k”. You just be a spoilt idiot. You make it sound like 4k is standard now when very few photography cameras shoot it. You cannot expect full frame 35mm 4k to cost the same as 4/3rds. Just not possible now.

  6. no internal 4k recording ….lame! much slower AF as Nikon 4Ds… and only 12MP instead of 16MP sensor? Grew up SONY!

    1. this camera is designed for videoextreme low light conditions photography, the 12mp is the ideal mp for 16:9 full hd without any sensor line skipping for excellent video quality, unlike the 4ds which video is awful, even the 5300 has better video.

      1. Wow, you have both cameras? That’s very cool. I cannot afford both a D4s and a D5300 so therefore I refrain from posting nonsensical BS without any concrete testing to back it up.

        1. Instead of looking like a newb do yourself a favour and use google to check videos made with the D4s and reviews on the video side of it and you will clearly see that the old D4 and the new D4s have terrible video quality worst then most entry level dslrs and even worst then the 350$ Nikon J1.

    2. Lol, yeah, compare it to the strong points of several different cameras at the same time and show us how it fails.

    3. It is a compromise (like the other A7 cams). It may boast of some “strong” points (and some will defend it to death even if they have no intention of buying/using one ever) but is a one big compromise with a rumored big price tag. Good luck to ATOMOS and A7s.

Sony will drop the prices steeply after all their promo gimmics will still fail to sell this.

  7. According to public statements from Atomos, the Shogun/A7S combo is supposed to be under $5,000.. That would seem to set the upper limit of the A7S at $2,999.
On a separate but related note, it would be nice if the RX100 III has clean HDMI out. If so, it could be combined with the new small Atomos recorder for a very compact package.

      1. What an odd question! I assume you’re trolling me, but just in case…

Why haven’t I replied? I was not asked a question. Terry wrote a comment that seems sensible and logical, so I read it, digested it, and moved on.

James, I post when I have something to say, not when I have nothing to do. These discussion boards would be much more productive if some of the posters would consider adopting that ethos.

  8. It’s also sad that Sony have not allowed the A7S to output 10 bit 4:2:2 via the HDMI (like the GH4 does).
    It’s only 8 bit 4:2:2

  9. WTF. The monitor is showing a leopard deep in the African bush. Yet the camera is sitting on a stool in a studio. I am sooo confused!

  10. Hope more external recorders would join the market to drive down the prices. I prefer something without the monitor that is smaller and cheaper.

    1. Absolutely. I would be fine with external recorders if they could find a way to make them more ergonomic with the rest of the camera.

      1. We have the Ninja Star which is a HD recorder that has no monitor and is $295 US.

        Cheers,
        -Brooke | atomos.com

        1. Where can I find reasonably priced cards for the Ninja Star? I’m having a hard time finding high capacity C-Fast 1.0 cards for sale.
