Top view of the A6000
I finally got the A6000 EVF and AF info:
– 1,400K dot EVF
– 179 phase detection points (on sensor)
I have been told the AF performance is impressive!
Further, the camera will be announced in a couple of hours at exactly 4am London time (that’s 5am in Berlin and 11pm in New York).

Seriously? Only 1.4 million dot EVF? That’s quite a downgrade 🙁
its the same as the RX10 EVF and to be honest it is a good one, it perform better in low light and is more responsive than my NEX-7 EVF which was 2.4 million dots.
Yes, perhaps refresh rate is better. I prefer a more responsive EVF to a higher res but slow one.
+1
As an owner of nex-7 and a99, I’d prefer high res and high response. But res is not much of a deal anyways.
The biggest drawback for nex-6 to me is the inability to use those two wonderful dials at once without pressing a button, which is stupid. Hope they fix that.
The top design is also look more like nex-7 which is great! Looks a bit smaller though.
Noise and speed have very little to do with the EVF and a lot to do with the LV feed from the sensor and image processor. Yes the my RX10 isn’t bad, but is definitely a downgrade from my A7 and all rumours thus far have said it’s the A7 EVF, suddenly it’s the RX10/A58 one? It’s a downgrade from every e mount camera this far, except the a3000… every other one has 2.4 million including the detachable.
If you used the A77/65 and NEX-7 camera you know it is inferior to the RX10 EVF, both in terms of response and low light noise, I don’t see it as a down grade given the low price of the A6000.
You missed MdB’s point. Sony’s earlier problem wasn’t the EVF, but the sensor readout not being fast enough. I had a 5N with EVF once and the live view has very strong aliasing due to under-sampling from the sensor.
Thing is, if this is indeed essentially the same EVF as on the RX10, we don’t actually know how much supporting a larger chip will affect the image quality. 40% fewer pixels AND slower refresh rates than the RX10 is a definite possibility.
“RX10 EVF better in low-light” is a misnomer. EVF displays what CPU feeds to it. And RX10 has more recent, BSI, sensor that NEX-7 has. Obviously RX10 sensor reads all pixels for LV, while NEX-7 does line skipping.
They probably have removed that 2.4 mpx evf due to production costs, or energy consumption.
Yes, that is strange and disappointing, but in line with the EM-10 which is in the same price range. This would suggest that Sony is cleaning up its line-up so that it is comparable to other brands.
a good EVF is not all about resolution, from what I know Sony made huge improvement since the EVF of the A77 and NEX-7, the current EVF have better optics (Four dual-sided aspherical lenses) that produce a sharper image. It is also visibily faster and does not have the horrible red noise seen in the first generation EVFs
I hope Sony is reading this and seeing the negative consequence of leaking incorrect higher spec’s. The a6000 is now starting off with negative publicity. The DF is a prime example of a camera that had a lot of rumored spec’s that when they were missing diminished the value in people’s minds. The A99 suffered a little from this as well. While the DF and the A99 have both been successful selling cameras, the mirrorless market is a more low end and doesn’t have the numbers of the DSLR/SLT market to counter the negativity on the internet. Just look at the NEX 7 compared to the NEX 6. The reason the 6 sold so much better because right from the start it had positive comments.
Who said that Sony did leak those wrong specs? Could it be that the informants did interpreted the information they found wrong? Or could it be that someone made a typo? Or…..
You mean 4pm london time? As in a few minutes?
4am London – 12 hours from now.
Well, looks like I better grab a coffee. Going to be a late night.
Is it worth to upgrade from Nex-5 ( 1st gen.) ?
Andrea … Any SR1 or 2 rumors about another APSC high-end model in near future?
I only heard about FF E-mount models.
I’ve been holding off on the A7 and the prices are coming down quite a bit. Any chance the new FF E mount will be cheaper?
Thats it.
Where is the link for pre-order? ^^
So there really won’t be an APS-C Nex 7 replacement. Disappointing.
Read between the lines. The real NEX7 replacement will be FF
But we do not need FF!!! APS-C with its DOF is what we need!
Crop it baby! If the price is similar to NEX-7’s but FF then why not.
@just me
While I don’t need either camera in e-mount, i’ll still respond to that “not very thought through” comment.
Is it really that hard to comprehend that NEX7 is 24mp, but so is A7. By cropping A7 to APSC frame size, your resolution drops to 10.6 megapixels…
What you should have said instead is “Stop down the lens 1 stop”. Because DOF difference between the two is exactly 1 stop. So a 35mm F2 APSC lens essentially becomes a 50mm F2.8 FF lens. FF sensor will compensate with higher ISO capability, which is pretty much 1 stop as well.
Wish there was an edit feature.
I meant a 35/2 APSC equivalent is FF 50/2.8
Not happy. Think I’ll stick with my 5r and detachable EVF WITH 2.4 million!!!!!!!!!
The wait continues for Sony to fulfil our dreams. Thought this might have been a winner for some time.
You don’t crop it because:
1. You get 10MP resolution
2. You lose pixel density of the APS-C sensor which is a big bummer for anyone using long lenses
THERE IS NO NEED TO GO FF!
The dynamic range of NEX 6 is bigger than that of A7.
The dynamic range of NEX 7 is equal to that of A7.
Same thing goes for A7R.
The noise level is 1.5 stop better on A7 vs NEX 7 but, because you have such a thin DOF you must close aperture and use higher ISO so in the end you end up exactly the same as if you were shooting NEX 7 instead of A7.
So, NO, there is no reason to go FF but that of giving more money to Sony for equal or worse product.
A7/R are plagued with:
1. Light filtration at the mount on A7R
2. Light reflection off the sensor – can´t take nice night pictures with bright lights in it on A7
3. Shutter vibration on A7R that makes you pictures lose resolution and end up equal to 24mp
4. Menus on A7/R are full of illogical decisions
So… Sony… you made a huge mistake by betting everything on FF and killing NEX7.
Why would I give up thousands of dollars invested in E mount lenses just to jump to FF?!
New FF E-mount lenses are at best as good as SIGMA 60mm f2.8 and the rest of them suffer horrible vigneting and nothing special with resolution.
My God!
You’re right!
My A7 is a pile of crap and I will throw it in the bin now…
“Clunk!”
:o)
Impressive as in one-shot AF better than GX7/E-M1?
Considering the AF performance of the A7, probably not. The best you can expect is that the performance is on the same level as sad models.
The sad truth is that the ages old Olympus PEN cameras had already better AF than today’s best NEX when they were still messing around with that shitty 12MP Panasonic sensor. As a NEX user I’m always amazed when I try those bodies… and the touch focus with a capacitive screen unlike the 5r/5t (which have those – for me – totally useless resistive screens).
Yeah, my puzzlement as well.
And maybe a firmware update (autofocus)for the A7, any rumors about that?
Where are the A79 rumours = dead ?
nope. Coming right after tomorrow’s announcement.
Any of these FF models will have 4k video?
I will not upgrade sony camera until 4k arrives.
This is a clear change over 1080p
The image quality is good now and does not multiply by 4 like with 4K so i will wait.
1.4 million dots. #$%^&! Same old Sony dance… two steps forward, one step back. Thrilled to see the “MR” mode, meaning storing custom settings is FINALLY possible, and PDAF on 24MP is excellent, especially if the autofocus speed has improved — but I figured 2.4 million dots was a given! People are saying the RX10 EVF refreshes faster, but here it’s supporting a larger sensor — I didn’t hear any gushing reviews of the A3000’s EVF!
I use a lot of vintage glass… I was counting on a high resolution EVF to improve my hit rate vs. my NEX-5’s LCD.
Yeah, the a3000’s EVF is atrocious, practically unusable. If that’s what this one is, it’s a loss.
Tha A3000 EVF has only 300K pixels….. and is still kinda usable.
No, my bad… the A3000 EVF is only 240k dots! Holy crap. So we’ll see… the optics may have improved and what-not, but I still expect 40% fewer pixels on A6000 vs. all the other NEX EVFs to make it harder to manually focus.
“two steps forward, one step back”
So we’ve moved forward then.
@Lotus Eater: that’s right, I’m NOT saying this all boils down to a step backwards vs. the NEX-6.
24MP, faster AF, memory recall (hopefully 3 “slots” like RX100), Alpha menus, Bionz X… those are all solid steps forward. We’ll see about this “improved color filter,” and what if any gains in DR and/or high ISO performance have been made.
I’m just saying that a 40% drop in EVF resolution is a particularly-painful loss for me, since I use manual lenses over 25% of the time.
Even so, this is probably what I’ll finally replace my aging (120k actuations) NEX-5 with… if the rumored price is correct. I tried out an A57 EVF in bright sunlight and it was quite good — that’s a 1.4 million dot, non-OLED EVF, so if this OLED EVF has improved optics it will probably be a “good enough” improvement for my landscapes, macros and other manual photography needs.
Maybe resolution loss in exchange for a better battery life??
The RX10 EVF is actually quite nice. The new Sony APS-C lineup looks like the A5000, A6000 and the new flagship (still to be announced). This looks like the end of the 5R/5T line; hopefully not. Still, a fast focusing NEX6 replacement would be a GREAT thing (especially if the rumored low price is true).
If there’s a ‘flagship’ above this, it probably won’t be APS-C.
I hope you are wrong. There is a place for great APS-C cameras (which this one could very well be).
No offence to Andrea, but I remember the exact same thing a few years ago: The Nex 6 had a lower res EVF compared to the Nex 7.
And it got the same so perhaps als this time…didn’t earlier rumours say the same quality als the A7’s?
But indeed the RX10 EVF is surprisingly good and given the low pricepoint of the A6000…
I wonder what the PD AF addition means to using A mount lenses on E mount. From what I understood, a principal mismatch between contrast AF and PD AF optimized lenses has been the main reason for slow AF with A mount lenses on NEX (sorry: alpha ;-)) (using LA EA 1 resp. LA EA 3). Well, maybe we shall find out during the next weeks when the first field reviews appear…
Before we heard the A6000 would replace both NEX-6 as well as NEX-7 I expected a 4MP EVF and surely not 1.4 MP.
Could the Admin maybe predict whether the A7000 would feature such upgrade ?
As it stands now we would have to get the new Fuji to get a truly superior EVF (but this is quite larger and more expensive than an A6000).
Maybe the future A-mount cameras ?
Note that EVF resolution is not given in pixels, but in sub-pixels, or ‘dots’. It’s an absolutely retarculous way to specify resolution, but that’s what it is.
3 dots (one each red, green, and blue) = 1 pixel (unless it’s a funky PenTile display or something). Thus, 1.4 million dots = about 467,000 pixels, or 0.467 Megapixels. That’s roughly an 800×600 display.
I bet the 1.4 Mdot is a mistake. It is usually 1.44 Mdots or 2.4, in this case is most probably 2.4 Mdots… 1.4 will be a major let down, unless there is some other magic about it…
It may be the NEX 6/7 successor – but it’s a NEX 6 update only and just a NEX 7 replacement.
Really not impressed until now…
I don’t think it was Sonys idea to release something groundbreaking here. It’s a viable update to the NEX 6 and will sell perfectly well. There is just no high-end mirrorless by Sony from now on.
You mean, high end mirrorless APS-C. There will be a high end mirrorless, but in full frame.
Right, APS-C.
The NEX-7 is still on sale and is still a very good camera.
They may have plenty of NEX-7s in the warehouse and be in no hurry for a replacement. Also, they will not want to risk eating into sales of the A7.
If the A6000 ist the NEX 6/7 replacement, the NEX 7 will be discontinued shortly. Shure you can buy one anyhow, guess they produced far more than they sold. But it’s getting a bit old over time, no WiFi, no apps, no GPS, no phase-detection AF, no touchscreen, silly old NEX menu, and maybe it could see some improvements in sensor quality. So though the NEX 7 is a viable buy even by today’s standards, its not what I would call an up-to-date high-end APS-C mirrorless. And it doesn’t seem a smart buy if you have been waiting for its successor for a year or so…
But it’s hard to understand from a marketing perspective how the NEX brand is ditched but it’s flagship model is still on sale with the NEX name…
Let’s wait for A6000 announcement and see what new rumors arise for a new E-mount camera. Admin might know something but he’s not being clear if the new cam on the horizon is an A3 (FF) or an A7000 (APCS).
Sony =kings of aliasing & moire -I look forward to the reviews of this one.
Your creativity is outstanding.
A 1.4M EVF is actually a serious disappointment, unless it is a typo from Admin (of which we have unfortunately seen quite a lot recently). Whatever the refresh rate, it is not a step forward. It is unbelievable that 3 years after Sony became the leader in EVF technology with the NEX-7, they would choose to downgrade this component. And I don’t see any indication here that another APS-C model is in the works – it sounds more and more like wishful thinking. In fact, the last APS-C release from Sony which was not intentionally crippled was the NEX-6. Or perhaps the NEX-5T, in the category without EVF. As the NEX name disappeared, so did also Sony’s interest in the APS-C format.
“179 points” for OSPDAF is all well and good, but WHERE ON THE FRAME are they?
A poor distribution of AF-points (and Sony has done that before!) could well mean that the “improved” AF in only better if the object you’re AF’ing is in a few select locations within the frame… 🙁
If the A6000 features a mere 1.4 MP EVF then the RX10 offers even more superior features over it (unless one uses fast -or legacy glass- primes on the A6000 of course).
Now I’m pretty sure Sony, as the Admin indicated!, will -again- surprise us all in the near future !
I guess the new Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II with 1.5 inch sensor and F2.0-3.9 and low MP count is really going to create quite a following.
I hope Sony brings faster (yet hopefully quite small) zoom lenses asap !
Of course the EVF is missing on the Canon so, at least to me, that is a point-and-shoot.
I’ve been waiting for a NEX-7 replacement for over a year but now it seems like it will never happen.
This model is replacing the NEX-7 only in the sense that the NEX-7 will be discontinued and this is what Sony has to offer. This is a NEX-6 upgraded with 24 MP sensor and questionable compromises to keep the price down.
There is a gap between 650 and 1300 euros, but what the geniuses at Sony will do is that they will release a plastic, crippled-down full frame camera.
It will be 10 MP in the crop mode like the A7, so it won’t be feasible upgrade path to any current E-mount APS-C lens owners. It will come with a VF hump so it’s not an option to those looking for a small camera that can match the DSLR-quality. All features, like the EVF will be inferior to A7, but the price will still be around 900-1000 euros.
Maybe the cheap FF doesn’t even have an EVF, just like the original 5 series.
I agree with this theory. The only thing, maybe it won’t have the hump. My bet is that the remaining “surprise” model will be have the NEX-7 shape but it will be fullframe and for good measure, it will be crippled in other ways so as not to undermine the a7/a7R.
+1
Sony’s emphasis this year is fleshing out FF mirrorless with lenses which makes sense since they own that segment for the moment. Incremental refreshes of their consumer volume APS-C mirrorless are obviously a priority since they’re dominating big shows and their 2014 product leads.
Enthusiast bodies seem low priority. They can’t release everything this year so I expect an APS-C mirrorless body above the middling a6000 in 2015. I also expect so will broaden their a-mount body offerings in 2015 because their alleged high price, low volume strategy is destined to fail since Sony can’t demand the price premium they need in bodies and lenses to make it work.
Sony needs volume. They need high end aspirational stuff to drive tech and interest in consumer grade stuff. You’d think the better stuff would come first as a driver for it all but they don’t think like that.
Is it just me that have noticed that the picture from top must be a FAKE / photoshopped? Because the on/off switch doesnt match with the other picture …
ehm, no, my fault, i should go to bed …
@mario Barrios … that’s your guess I reckon ?
I too a a bit disappointed because I was expecting/hoping for the A7 EVF.
OTOH a FF camera with that price tag could take the market by storm, in that way it could prove genius.
If the EVF is of that much importance there is still the Fuji way.
The A6000 is a nice option still.
Yes, just guessing here!
I have several E-mount lenses and I need a new camera so I will most likely go with the A6000 myself. The NEX-7 is available for the same price, but the menu system, the lack of Wi-Fi and few other missing features makes me not want to buy it.
You probably right about the NEX-7-like full frame.
What I don’t understand is that the NEX-7 was released in August 2011 and had a 2.4 M EVF, so how come the A6000 can’t have it. The component prices must have come down in two and half years.
Other thing I don’t understand is that while 95% of users love the Tri-Navi, why didn’t Sony include the Tri-Navi or similar with the A6000? The knobs can’t cost that much, right? It seems like they have to dump down the cheaper cameras just for the sake of it. It’s like if the iPhone 5C came without Retina display and volume buttons. Doesn’t Sony want their users to be happy with their purchases? They probably do it to up sell to more advanced models, but now they don’t even have anything to offer. A7/R is not for everybody. And there is other camera brands. It’s like with Sony TVs, the cheaper models always look butt ugly and everybody knows how that went down. Don’t they ever learn.
These signs don’t make me very confident in investing E-mount lenses. I were planing to buy the SEL1018 but I don’t know. Maybe full frame is where Sony is focused now (for the next 6 months before the next big thing cones to horizon).
Tri-Navi is not what most customers would appreciate … that’s what I guess anyway.
A mode dial is very attractive if a camera is to be used by multiple people (families). Looking at expected pricing of the A6000 that seems to be what Sony is after (and not the enthousiast and surely not the pro’s).
(What I am concerned the Sony RX10, and e.g. the new Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II are starting to look most interesting if the kit includes the 16-50 PowerZoom and not the Zeiss 16-70).
I have a dream of both there would be an A6000R ( updated Nex-7) and weather sealed A6000 (R) camera :D…
So funny that Sony gives Andrea these last moment “leaks” in exchange for what, for trying to convince us that A-mount is not dead and there is a true flagship E-mount APS-C coming within six months?
All we get is pile of point & shoots and cameras made of parts that Sony had laying around in the factory.
And so it starts all over again…
You know, the people who do school yearbooks and take school pictures (in my area, at least) are equipped with relatively inexpensive DSLRs. It’s amazing that they’re actually be able to make money with equipment that almost everyone is SAR looks down on. Of course, these companies purchase tools that can maximize their profit margins. Many here would scoff at the primitive equipment that Capa and Cartier-Bresson used.
When they replace the popular (at least with SAR readers) NEX-7 with the a6000 and people here pine for something better out pops some vagueness about a FF mirrorless to really replace it even though that makes little sense. Maybe this was planned body with no relation to NEX-7 they’re now spinning as the replacement?
It is hard to believe the A6000 will be the top of the line APS-C E mount body from Sony. And their confusion on a A79 replacement is even more surprising. It is like they are ignoring any crop shooters that want a high end body. In this competitive market, ignoring any segment seems like bad business. Price them to make money, but don’t force them elsewhere.
Actually, high end APS-C is probably a more limited market than low end full frame. That doesn’t mean they should not come out with a high end APS-C, however. It’s only February and everyone here is talking like all the product introductions are over and done with.
Is it just me? Or is this new Sony starting to look a bit like a FujiRicoh?
Not necessarily a bad thing mind you.
Looks good, price looks good.
Well, looks like the G1X Mark II wins this round!
LOL. P&S G1x vs 24.3Mp APS-C sensor, possibly best APS-C sensor on market? Oh yeah, I never laughed that much. Dude, keep posting more.
I’m glad you’re entertained by Sony’s incompetence.
It’s free and it’s easy! 😀
Can GX1 Mark II shoot Ultra wide angle photo?
Can GX1 Mark II take photo of the birds on trees?
The GX1 Mark II should be a rival of RX100 series
From the rumored picture, the G1X mark2 sucks.
ugly design. Just 1 dial which is a mode dial. It’s just an improved point and shoot for canon fan boys.
I am pretty sure Sony simple wanted to offer as much as possible for an acceptable price. It’s only a matter of keeping the price as low as possible
Seeing what is supposedly in the A6000 I still feel it’s an incredible bargain.
Who is going to notice the EVF has 1.4 and not 2.0 M pixels ? Probaby … No-one.
as always, now is the best time to get the soon to be discontinue Nex 6. Best price i had seen before is $599.
I wonder if this camera will support XAVC-S 60p.
I will sell all my Sony Stuff now, this is not a replacement for my NEX-7. This is a sensor upgraded NEX-6 with cheap stuff built in to make it sell low price. Then, I care nuts of fast AF, I shoot hybrid lenses in MF only, the only Sony lens I ow is the kit lens. Without tri navy system the camera is for me useless as such. Now, since we need to wait a 10 month longer for the next “bad” surprise, I prefer to change the brand. With adapters I can run my lenses on all other mirrorless, like the GX7 who has it all. If Sony does not understand that, they will find out that they are digging their own grave quiet soon. The 4/3 sensor is not absolutely what I seek for, but still better in high ISO response than the NEX-7 sensor, and, I find a better lens park for it, one that is fast. The F4 obsession from Sony and 2.8 as fastest speed is boring, and, what they make faster than 2.8 is not affordable compared to others.
The new nex 7 is coming, but it will be full frame.
Did Sony promise anything? Does your NEX7 take bad pictures after 2 years? Does a GX7 do better? Don’t think so… This is clearly a NEX5/6 replacement, not one for the NEX7. Take pictures and wait…
Wow the Franken-Nex is much worse than I thought! I thought it would at least have the same resolution EVF as the Nex 6/7 because they would have some lying about, it’s only 2+ years old. But alas, they went to the cheap pile. So, as it stands, tomorrow the A6000 is Sony’s flagship APS-c mirror less camera. I’m sure Fuji, Samsung, all the micro 4/3 and any stragglers out there fearful of Sony killing them in the enthusiast market are drinking champaign tonight. Oh, did anyone forget that they forgot to release any new lenses?
Peace!
Dan
Do you know M4/3 has a 2X crop factor?
I do think that would affect the use of MF lens
IF you mainly shoot with MF lens,
A7 /A7R should be more suitable for you
And please mind that GX7 has only two dial and the same as A6000
I don’t think Sony will leave the A7000 name be abandoned
as “7” has special meaning for Minolta/ Sony user
Good luck, and choose what you like, bro
Lower EVF resolution = lower battery consumption. Hopefully.
Further, the camera will be announced in a couple of hours at exactly 4am London time (that’s 5am in Berlin and 11pm in New York).
Who the hell is announcing at those hours?
Mind you, the sun rotates around the earth, once a day the full circle, and thus 4 am in London equals 12 noon in Tokyo.
Burn the heretic!
That’s a good one:-)
its 11am here in Tokyo right now.. excitement!
This thing better have global shutter and AF as first as Olympus (I seriously doubt Sony can pull this off though), otherwise it’s not really an upgrade at all.
Bi-curious,
By this I mean:
1) Will I also be able to the EVF that I bought for RX100-M2 by slipping into the hot shoe on the top?
2) Is there any advantage to doing this?
3) Is built flash compatible with older discrete flashes and work in the save/master mode? Sadly my flash on my RX100 does not work this way.
