(SR5) UPDATED: First images of the A6000!

This is the first image of the A6000! The camera will be announced tomorrow around 4-5am London time and you can follow the announcement live here on SAR!

UPDATE: This is the top view of the new A6000!

It also looks like the sensor is Exmor and not ExmorR. Maybe the original message contained an error because the compact cameras actually use Exmor R sensors 🙂

Additionally we now know the 3 inch screen has 921,000 dots and is tiltable.

1. FF or not? This is important to know if we should wait to get the more expensive one or not (i.e., more money for you through links or not)

2. The A6000 seems like a disappointment in that there is no EXMOR R sensor.

Please, let us have that rumor on the other FF NEX!

3. Admin is withholding rumors of the NEX-7 type body till a few hours before it’s announced. 🙂 No, seriously, it’s better for him to withhold till he is more sure. Last Summer, the rumors were so wild and contradictory that both A and E camps were up in arms every time a rumor came out. As much as the hint of this secret rumor makes me highly curious, I’d rather be a little more certain.

4. Yeah, last eyar it was a real mess because the new “Alphas” were actually E-mount cameras. Didn’t get it until very late that also NEX woudl be named Alphas only 🙁

5. Correction, someone told me about that and I didn’t belive it. THought it would be impossible Sony would do somehting that stupid…well they did it 🙂

1. Hmmm, maybe the silly mode dial can be configured to become an exposure compensation dial, ie tri-navi OR bi-navi+ mode dial..

1. Nah, won’t be possible. It is pretty clear what they did here, they made a NEX-7 and switched one of the dials to a single function, so NEX-7 users will buy whatever is above. Same as before, we have a filler 6-series camera.

2. If you look on Sony facebook page their is a Small pic of the corner of a NEX type devise
……I belive whatever it is will be ..SILVER

1. Two dials and a mode dial! Why a mode dial? Who the hell needs a model dial. One wheel wasted for something I change twice per year. A mode dial! Boohooooo!

Seriously, this is an upgraded NEX6.

1. Even though I hate the mode dial, it is interesting to inspect. I see all the modes the NEX6 had plus a movie mode as on the A7. But there is one more that I have no clue about.
@andrea: Could that be a single ‘memory’ mode?

1. Yes, MR is “memory recall” and lets you recall one of three memory sets. When you click to MR, the LCD lets you choose which memory set. This would be wonderful to have. I need at least one set to park my B&W shooting on.

2. A mode dial? They’ve probably added this for me because I change it sometimes and here I can see which mode is active even when the camera is switched off.

3. Don’t why you hate mode dial.

I like mode dial. I use it frequently on my RX100 during travel. One moment I am taking a portrait or a landscape picture in Aperture priority, the next moment I could be photographing a waterfall in shutter priority mode.

The MR is great for changing to a custom mode very quickly. I think I am gonna love this camera.

1. Although probably unlikely, maybe it IS one dial on top of another for the mode dial – kind of a combo NEX-6 dials and NEX-7 tri-navi. There is no rear pic yet to know for sure.

4. I shift the mode dial to M and it remains there forever on cameras that have dials for aperture, shutter speed and and ISO. Otherwise, I find the mode dial worthwhile, I suppose.

5. Of course, this is a NEX-6 replacement. With a brand new sensor. Will it have art filters, a Quick Menu page (Quick Navi) and the new improved menu control system from the Sony A7? Potentially this might be a competitor for the Fuji XT1. The lens has been moved 3mm to the left to make room for wider lenses. As posted by SAR last August.

1. Yes, except that it’ll be a 36-105mm equivalent lens… So far, all FE lenses are supposed to work with APS-C bodies, too.

1. f/2.8??

You can’t beat a FF sensor for overall IQ, but you would benefit from the central sweet spot of the lens when using the 24-70 on an APS-C body, so the corners should be sharp.

1. It looks really good.
But I guess, sadly there won’t be a Nex-5/n/t/r successor. I really like the separate EVF, because it was placed in the optical axis and it was tiltable – and you could leave it at home…

1. that would be nonsense – and quite expensive. And nobody knows, if a camera with in-built EVF would support the external one…

1. You want a removable and tilt-able EVF, that’s one way to get one. Whether it’s nonsense or not might depend on whether the original wish is nonsense or not. 🙂

2. If only Pony had not felt the need to put a stupid mode dial on this camera it would have been perfect.

Still, it will be 1/2 the price of the NEX7 at launch so I can live with that…

3. Any idea if this will be weather sealed ? Looking to weigh this against the XT-1 … by the rumours a6000 wins purely from a price perspective but xt-1 has the fujiness..

4. This will make a great backup for my A7r for:

– use with my FE 55/1.8 with fast AF for portraits
– use with my E10-18 for 24mp wide angles
– use with the FE70-200/4 for 300mm FOV.
– use with the FE24-70 – should cut off the disappointing corners!
– use with the E20/2.8 for a small cam to take out on MTB/SKIs

1. Maybe it has!
It’s possible that they chose this layout to have the possibility to switch between Ne-6 and Nex-7 kind of operation. If this was like the Nex-6, they could have used the dual concentric knobs, they left more space for a bigger flash…

1. look like the plastic body of the Alpha 7, which is anyway a step forward in feeling quality than the one use on the NEX 6.

1. Eh, on closer look, probably just took the control dial that was below the mode dial on the NEX-6 and moved it to the side.

5. History repeats itself because it teaches nothing to people. Minolta went bust because it kept getting in and out of the pro market (see the CLE and the too late Maxxum 9). Many critics at that time insisted that to establish oneself as a player you have to take seriously the need of having a competitive flagship, even if it is a money looser. It is a matter of brand recognition and a good flagship will tow the sales of the rest of the line.
Sony bought Minolta to repeat the same errors.
It will never be CaNiSo unless Sony introduces quickly a 50 MP ibrid mount camera, mirrorless, with IBIS, electronic first curtain, fast AF, 4K etc. I believe that it can be EVF (a 4K EVF)and it can be relatively big (but smaller than the CaNicon monsters)
No way: they keep playing with mass market stuff, especially pointandshoots ready to be cannibalized by cellulars.
Oh and also they must speed up the introduction of more lenses
Paul

1. Agreed. Even more stupid is the decision to drop the universally known NEX brand, that has helped them a lot to recognition — they have tried unsuccessfully many times to establish moronic brand names (“Exmor”, “Bionz”) and when they at last succeed with one — they drop it.

2. Soon after Sony releases such camera, Canikon will offer a better option. And people will go for it instead of Sony’s. That’s how oligopoly works.

3. “Mirrorless” and “Fast AF” don’t go together.

If you want fast AF, it gotta be an SLT. For some reason everyone keeps forgetting that fast AF is yet impossible without a mirror.

6. FULL S E N S O R R E A D O U T !!!!!!

YES::???
NO::???

if NO it is WORTHLESS….. castratus est
so old nex-5 goes on and on oand on.
and others do the job..but not this…
think its time to say by, was a nice time all this
years admin..but sony is out…by!

1. What company offers full sensor readout in anything larger than a 1 inch sensor?

Your “requirement” is not technically feasible at this time.

1. I had to look up what a F55 was. You are right, if you want a $30,000 pure video camera with a 9MP sensor you can get full sensor readout from a roughly APS sized sensor. It has a global shutter too.

But that is kink of like recommending a F1 race car to somebody looking for a sports car. That technology will probably make it down to consumer cameras but not now, particularly with the higher MP count of still cameras.

1. Is there a reason to believe the F55 sensor is substantially more expensive to manufacture than a *regular* sony APS-C sensor ?
I don’t think so – its not a Formula1 Engine, Sony could put the tech in other sensors/cameras but they choose not to do so, which is understandable from their perspective. Only if there is competition putting tech like that in their non-pro cameras will Sony do so too.

2. Global shutter alone is enough to make F55 sensor more expensive. Not to mention the supporting system(processing etc) for a full read out.

3. So your theory is that the management at Sony has decided they have such an overwhelming lead over Canon/Nikon that they do not have to even try their best? That they are selling all the NEX (excuse me, Alpha) cameras they want to and are deliberately holding down sales by no implementing features that many people want? Seriously???

The sensor in the F55 probably is very expensive. Achieving the high readout speed probably requires extra circuitry and tighter standards which drives yields down. An it is only a 9MP sensor. Reading out 24MP would take a lot longer than 9 so even if the same technology was used it would not be sufficient for a 24MP sensor. The market for a 9MP still camera would be very small in 2014 and this camera is a still camera with video capability, not a video camera than also happens to take stills.

4. As long as the competetion does not put such advanced tech in their consumer devices, sony won’t either, because that would cannibalize the pro-sales. Same would go for Canon and their pro-video-line propably.

At least Pana is pushing affordable 4K (how much percent of a full readout does GH4 do for 4k?), and I hope Sony will react with a competitivly priced 4K APS-C. Pana also (supposedly) reduced rolling shutter a lot, maybe GH5/6 will have global shutter allready.

7. Any pictures from the back side?
I’m very unhappy that it’s not gonna have a front dial.

So we will have the top dial, mode dial and probably the well known click-wheel on the back side. I hope that it’s possible to adjust ISO directly with the click-wheel in A-mode (had no function with NEX-6, somekind of stupid, huh?)

Or maybe there is an additional thumb dial just below the dial on top?

1. Lol that had no function on 5R too… Dual navi would be fine if that back wheel could be programmable. I’d set it to ISO in A, S, P mode. Tri navi is only really useful in M mode and I could live without the 3rd dial – I use M mode for really planned shots such as portraits where most of the setting up is done once and at the start and not so often it requires 1 action. If it’s a toss up between features I’d rather things such as:
– separated AF from shutter button
– quick MF/AF toggle
– better menu
– option to disable constant pre-focus

A view of the backplate would help as there may be a hidden dial…

8. WOW, actually much better than I thought!
the design is very clean.
Looks like:
– magnesium body
– new improved grip
– dials aren’t increasing the size
– new black lens mount
– silver hotshoe
– new shutter button

overall a great new clean design, in my opinion definitely much nicer than the NEX-6 and the material look like the NEX-7.

1.
and the material look like the NEX-7.
I hope so! I’d never buy a camera with that price tag, if the build quality was below the standard of my Nex-5n – that’s why I don’t have a Nex-6…

1. I, too, have 5n, but I was considering 6 as a replacement (mainly because of EVF and PDAF). The build quality of 5n is amazing, and I thought I would never go from magnesium to plastic. But when I rethought that – why wouldn’t I? What magnesium gives that high quality plastic wouldn’t? Will your camera last a century? No. You’ll switch it in 3-5 years. If your camera falls down, it’s more plausible that its innards would break, and not its body.
So, now, I think I would accept plastic body if that means considerable reduction of price. I’d rather have weather sealing than the magnesium body…

2. sorry I meant to say silver hotshoe now black. the NEX 6 looked quite awkward in my opinion, too much plastic and black and silver mixed up. This a6000 is all black, and very clean, bravo!

3. It’s not bad. I don’t see how similar it is to the a7 though. I really hope there is another dial in the back though, to mimick trinavi. I doubt it since it’s supposed to look like nex-6. I just hope that the back button can be used to focus.

1. Do you know if the A7(r) or the Fuji M1/E2/X-T1 does have different screen ratio?
I might consider those instead. Never liked the 16:9 screen of my NEX-5N

1. A7r is 4:3 but because it has the EVF on top. The others I don’t know. 16:9 is closer to the 3:2 sensor format though and for filming its perfect. So I don’t know if this really could be a deal breaker, I never heard users of NEX6 and NEX7 complaining about that…

1. I agree that for video 16:9 is great. It is only that I have the EOS M as well and I love the screen for stills more than I do for my NEX5

9. No, thanks. I want a NEX-7 upgrade, not a NEX-6 upgrade. So, I will stay with NEX-7, will then slowly announce it for sale and will change the brand. Sony plays with our bulls.

1. What bothers me is this eternal mentality from Sony updating their cameras and beginning by the bottom line. Admin said that Nex-7 replacement comes as a surprise at Photokina. That might be all ok, but, 9 to 11 month ahead before I can buy it. I seek for something better in sensitivity and I expected a NEX-7 type with the 20 mpix sensor. I am afraid that NEX-7 replacement will have a bigger sensor or be FF. The way this camera looks, is not what I wait for, and I do not want to wait 7 more month to replace the my 7, it’s as simple as that. Then I prefer to change to the perfect 7, GX-7 from Pana, it has all I look for, all that Sony seems not to be able to bring us.

1. Yes-mode dial should be switched w/command dial so one used most is on inside; hopefully this is only a sketch; it would be crazy to have the rarely used mode dial at the inside position.

10. i can see “P/A/S/M/MR/Movie/Panorama/Scene/iAuto/iAuto+” on the mode dial
which means there will not be separated Movie button and we have a new MR mode?

1. MR= Memory Recall. Movie button is separate.

You can save a custom setting which you frequently use into MR. Then instead of changing aperture, shutter speed, iso etc to your required setting, you can just turn the mode dial to MR and get all those values to your custom set.

Say for example if you would like to use jpeg high contrast black white for photography with aperture set to F8, you can save these settings to your MR. And from your normal raw shooting mode if you want to quickly change to the above settings, all you have to do is to turn the mode dial to MR.

11. NEX Name plz , Alpha 3000 (mirrorless in DSLR Body) Alpha 5000 (Entry mirrorless) Alpha 6000 (Semi Pro mirrrorless)

NEX … Good name for mirrorless not Alpha 6000

A6000 on top plate not look good… like NEX7 on top

12. Thanks a lot Admin !!!! Truly appreciated !
This camera looks to me to be the very best I could ever hope for !
Best of Nex-6 and 7 in one (visually at least).
Can’t wait !!!

13. Well, since Sony probably has 50-75 more cameras to announce this year, everyone is sure to find at least one they like. Really, the drama is sooo undeserved…

And I doubt that anyone will be able to tell the difference between photos from this camera and the one you already own… Just sayin’…

1. Sony has very few announcements this year which is why corporate strings us along with a dribble of small bits. I’m not counting all the conflicting rumors which is either more of Sony corporate playing with us to keep us interested or trial balloons to test ideas.

Sony should name this “year of product consolidation”. 2014 could be worse but it could be whole lot better too.

1. Well, the X-T1 came also without a sealed lens as well as the Samsung NX30.

And we have the sealed FF E-Mount lenses.

So on my book this is no reason for doubt. (My reason for doubt is more the rumored price.)

1. The NX30 isn’t weather-sealed, but Samsung did announce a sealed lens at the same time, which is a strong hint that a sealed body is coming soon.

14. It would amaze me more than everything else if the screen has 921 *million* dots 🙂 (Admin: please remove this after correcting the rumor text)

15. Why do Sony APS-C mirrorless bodies have to be so butt ugly? I’m not into style over substance but, really, Sony you can do a lot better than that. At least we know now why Sony, unlike their competitors, was in no hurry to release photos of their latest mirrorless cropped sensor ‘flagship’. 😉

Spec-wise should be a good competitor if the performance holds up to the promise. Eagerly await the reviews.

Wow! The Year of the A-mount has just been so exciting for me! All these e-mount announcements and releases… errr…. well, we do know Sony’s dumping the mid-range amateurs like me bought into with previous models… errr… well, we know one of the scant few a-mounts to come will have 4k I’m dying to have or maybe not so much… errr… well, at least it seems they’ll be milking us for expensive, low-volume bodies… errr… well maybe Sony will ‘expand’ their a-mount lens line-up this year by releasing replacements like the did with the 70-210 and charging us $1,000 more for it… ah, never mind. I’m sure 2015 will be the Year of the A-Mount. 😉

1. My question about the length of time you can record a movie is poised as a result of my experience with the Sony Nex 5, which I have been using for stills and video since October 2010. On this vintage model, the camera was designed with a 29 minute limit for a movie clip. I was never able to reach that file length because the sensor would overheat and shut down the camera.

Having said that, the size of the SD card is undeniably one factor. Let’s assume a 32GB card is installed.

Is there still a 29 minute limit imposed by design with this new Sony A 6000? If not, how long will it record video on said 32 GB card? I look forward to user reports that document how long the A6000 will reliably record a video capture…

16. What if there were a tidy, small vertical grip with extra battery and substantial tripod support that would obviate need for L bracket? A7s got it, XT1s got it. Hope sensor is worth it, for this looks like neither fish nor fowl, so far.

17. Hello, I’m really interested in the “improved rgb filter” feature and I would like more details about it.
Also if someone can point me some sources about different rgb filters in different brands I would be grateful since I’d like to investigate this topic.

Regards
Federico

18. Ok, but still no news for the b/w full-frame digital camera? I wonder that because I don’t want to loose my money for a Leica MM

19. Looking at the mode dial size and position, I’d bet it is dual function. A clutch or switch probably converts this to another customizable dial so that the camera retains the tri-navi.

1. I don’t think so. The mode dials seems to be slightly bigger. And if you print on a dial, you assing a function to it – which shouldn’t be alterable from a pruduct design standpoint.

But its a shame that Sony kills TriNavi. It was the most perfect interface I ever used on a camera.

2. probably not, like every mode dial it should be hard to turn with a stop on every icon so not very friendly for an aperture or ISO control.

20. If you look at the size of the A6000 camera body I believe there is no way it could host more dials and features.
It even has builtin flash and 2 top dials.
Therefore it is hard for me to understand why posters are comparing it grip- and feature-wise with cameras that seem nearly twice the volume of this A6000 body.
In addition the lenses on those APS-C cameras are huge compared with the retractable 16-50 Sony zoom or even the SEL16-80 Zeiss/Sony zoom ! (although some are of course a bit faster)

21. I like it; It looks great. The price is very competitive as well. But I have NEX and this only adds megapixels? what else?

Sony designs very nice cameras to hold -NEX (to me it is still NEX) is better than GX7 design. I still want better APSC lens choice and better focus speed -maybe this has better speed.

22. They should come out a second colour body of a partial silver and black version like OMD Em10, now is the trend… So our collected Silver lenses won’t look silly too.

23. STANDARD HOTSHOE OR “INTELLIGENTFUKED” THING?
MIC INPUT OR “INTELLISTUPID” CONECTOR?
SUSTAINED VIDEO RECORDING UNTIL CARD EXAHUST?
APP SUPPORT?

24. Did a direct image comparison between the A6000 and NEX 6 top plates. Both cameras are about the same width, NEX 6 was a little wider due to the strap lugs. Look to be about the same thickness. The A6000 has a Custom button instead of a function button near the shutter release. The A6000 has two smaller dials on top instead of a larger stacked dial on the NEX 6. The Mode dial has a dedicated movie spot now which the NEX 6 lacked. Looks like the A6000 may have gained another bottom on the back upper surface near the mode dial.

25. I am almost glad to see a6000 not bringing magic.
I still have the old nex6 which will go on to eBay this week. Olympus em1 has arrived to my house with 75mm lens. What an amazing piece of engineering my god. I have not felt that for a long time. Even with the A7r and the 55mm fe lens which I sent back to amazon last week.
Will wait to see cleaned up full frame from sony. Sony needs to impress me to get me back. I’ve been with them since f707.

26. Needed a better lens though, the 16-50 is very mediocre. Why release a new body when it’s just the same thing as Nex-6. Why not work on a better lens first?

27. For us videographers, please tell me Sony lets you program C1 to start/stop video! You can’t appease the photographers by moving the location of the record button while pissing off the videographers! Compromise dammit!
