(SR4) Sony will announce seven(!) new lenses on Friday?

The following rumor comes via a trusted source! He told me Sony will announce seven new lenses. He didn’t share any details if among them there will be the rumored “Updated” A-mount lenses. But there will be definitely new E-mount lenses unveiled. Some of the will be available by end of the year and some of them in 2016 only.

So far we heard one FE telephoto lens, one FE  portrait lens, one 24-70mm FE GM are coming. And also two updated 85mm and 135mm A-mount lenses could be announced tomorrow.

  1. I need a longer tele zoom, and would take a 70-300 or 80-400 regardless of aperture.

The Sony Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 85mm F1.4 is a given.

A matching Sony Zeiss FE 50mm F1.2 would be a pleasant surprise.

    1. 300-600 f4.8 with 150mm barrel extender for close up/ macro and drop in dedicated 2.8x teleconverter.
      Sell for mid $3000 range.

  2. A 70-400mm f4.0 would be a welcome addition to the system.
The rumoured 85mm f1.4 may just be the updated A Mount lens, which should work nicely on the A7RII with LA-EA3

      1. I just managed to sell my A99 & Zeiss 85mm 1.4 last weekend. Now trying to decide wether to get the Sony 90mm or wait to see what is in the pipeline. The other Zeiss / Sigmas work fine on LA-EA3, but I did not like using the EA4 very much. The EA4 will now be permanently attached to my Minolta 200mm 2.8, as there will not be a replacement for that lens anytime soon (if ever).

        1. Did you get a lot of money for your unique 86mm f1.4, or was it a dodgy rip-off copy where they got the details slightly wrong?

          Couldn’t resist a bit of gentle ribbing…lol!

  3. Presumably all the E mount lenses will be FE. Here’s to hoping that there will be at least one new apsc lens (hopefully an improved mid range zoom)…

  4. 2 f2.8 zooms, a longer Tele, 85mm prime… That’s 4. I’m hoping a longer 100-135mm prime and a wide prime, around 17-20mm. Hopefully one other prime would be nice.

  5. I want a 24-70mm f/2.8 (so that I can provide PRO background blur). It must be small, light, and have edge to edge sharpness from wide open. It must also be under $/£500.

If Sony can’t do this they just aren’t PRO enough.

    1. Won`t happen. 500€ for an new design 24-70 f2.8? This is dreaming. You should be happy if this lense costs only a bit more than 1000€. Take a look at the new nikon 24-70 and it`s price …

    2. Hope Sony really does make some staple professional f/2.8 constant zoom though (of course they won’t be small and cheap). It was a mistake bringing out the enthusiast grade constant f/4 zooms first. They need to be taken more seriously by professional photographers to expand their market share.

      1. Well I already have the 55/1.8. You raised an interesting point in response to my joke, though; is the 55/1.8 a better choice for all situations? What is lazy about using a 24-70?

    1. You can just use an a mount adapter and get that lenses from the A system. There’s no need for another same focal length…

  6. This might be interesting, but for those only coming in 2016 it could be rather moot. If you need such a lens now, that lead time is way too long.

    1. Of course it won’t happen. Why would they make a cheap constant f/4 zoom and also sell the premium Zeiss constant f/4 zooms at the same time? It would only devalue them. Makes no sense.

      1. Exactly my point. If they want to sell a lot of normal zooms, it would be the right thing to do, but it seems they would rather sell a few expensive lenses instead.

      2. A cheap zoom wouldn’t devalue the Zeiss zoom unless it was of similar quality. And if it was of similar quality it wouldn’t be cheap.

  7. This will be interesting. How big would these new lenses be? Many of the lenses announced last year were bigger than their SLR counterparts with the exception of the SEL28F20.

If it’s true that we will be seeing F2.8 zoom lenses for E-mount, I wonder how big they will be and how expensive. Many people in the past were asking for FE F2.8 lenses being cheaper than A-mount lenses. Will Sony make it happen? (really doubt that).

Now there are people asking for 70-400 with constant aperture. Have they ever seen the size of the SAL70400G2??? And that’s just an F4-5.6, not even constant aperture.

  8. Apparently Sony can do everything but be loyal to their original customer base!!
    It’s September!

There is only one Announcment, which is important!
No need for FE-Mount glas > you can use any glass with adapter, or am I wrong?

  9. Another Standard zoom lens
Another 35mm prime, this time f/2.4
Silver version of the wide angle converter for the 28mm
    16-50 APS-C kit lens update
Yet another 35mm prime, f/1.7 because why not?
    135/1.8 SSM
    85/1.4 SSM

    There you go

    1. If they made another 35mm prime, it will be f/2. I don’t see why not. Many people find f/2.8 too slow, f/1.4 too big and expensive and the Loxia is MF only which most people don’t like. A budget f/2 35mm without the Zeiss branding that’s just a bit bigger than the 28/2 and equally as sharp will sell like hotcakes.

      1. exactly , so many people argued why another 35 MM FE Mount lense, 2.0 would be perfect in size and weigtht and DOF. you are so right!!!

      1. 35mm F0.95 – For the bokkeh freak who hides ugly composition with bokkeh
35mm F1.2 – For the Ultimate Professionals who uses bokkeh as subject
        35mm F1.4 – For the Average Professionals
35mm F1.7 – For the Professional wannabe (They say the 0.1 difference is epic)
35mm F1.8 – For the Newbies who wants a fast prime
35mm F2.0 – For those who don’t like mainstream specs
        35mm F2.8 – For the average joe
35mm F4 – For the sake of FE line-up consistency
35mm F8 Reflex – For the Donut lovers

        There are a 35mm for everyone~!!!

  10. Possibly a 24-70mmf2.8 and a 100-400mm, a 135mm would be a nice surprise, 2 A mount lenses and maybe 2 APS-C e mount lenses, maybe a 16-50mmf2.8 for the new a7000/a6100 and a Zeiss 16mmf1.8. Add to that the new Loxia wide angle and it seems like a solid year for Sony.

  11. So if every rumor turn to be true we will see:

    -All those new lenses;
    -A6100 entry level update;
    -A7000 high end APS-C;
    -Vg900 with A7S sensor;
    -A7sII

  12. Any primes that are no larger than the Batis twins are welcome for me, more 35/1.4 or 90 macro sized lenses and I’ll pass. Same for the zooms. How many people will seriously buy a $2000+ f/2.8 zoom for the A7 bodies? Or a 2 pound 135/1.8? I bet not many. 70-300 seems likely. 50/1.4 could fill the large aperture prime.

I have a 5 lens kit that fits in a small sling with the A7rII, I’d like to shuffle my lineup a bit, but not if it adds a few pounds to the overall weight. I’ll take f2 or 2.8 over 1.4 to save weight and cost. We need more lenses like the 28/2, in my opinion of course.

    1. “How many people will seriously buy a $2000+ f/2.8 zoom for the A7 bodies? Or a 2 pound 135/1.8?”

      Paid professional photographers.

      1. Catering to the “pro” market is a losing strategy for Sony, they’ve already admitted it. Pros aren’t suddenly dropping CaNikon’s superior lens ecosystem, flashes and support just because a 24-70/2.8 comes into the mix.

So again, how many will they sell if this becomes a reality? Not many. Sony is smart enough to realize that.

        1. The only thing they said was about fighting Canikon on same strategy and that americans like fat bodies, nothing about PRO.

          1. I don’t think so. A career photographer will not just have one camera/one system in his dry box. Which ones he took on assignments is another question.

            http://shotkit.com/

When it comes to paid work, what you want to do is to get results ASAP. Therefore a familiar workflow with tons of customized presets is what you would want. Dropping a system means you have to rebuild the workflow. It’s wasting a lot of time (time = money) and will bring hassle. This is a big reason why these guys just stick to one thing unless they have to make a change.

That’s a big reason why Apple is still dominant in certain areas of design. Already grown-up users just got used to it. But users still under training are adapting to windows much quicker.

      2. You know, I just got the LAEA3 yesterday to use for an upcoming shoot with A7Rii and my 2.8 16-35 A-mount CZ zoom. It’s a flipping monster setup. I have all FE primes and 70-200 zoom and the adapted 2.8 piece just feels bad in hand after taking it off the A99. The grip doesn’t help because the adapter obstructs handling. It’s my first letdown with the system, though I don’t intend on adapting on a regular.

I must admit, though I will be in a market for native 2.8 zooms, since I rarely use them I’ll have to think long and hard if I really want such a pairing. The form factor (size/weight) is suddenly a drawback for me and looses some of the appeal as a travel solution. Might have to reconsider the F4 zooms.

If Sony/Zeiss can pull off a miracle and shrink the A-mount 2.8 equivalents at lest 15% or more for the E mount they will sell for $2K like nobody’s business.

          1. Frankly I’m more concerned about the size. I just packed for my 3-day weekend shoot adventure and the 24-70 F2.8 CZ mounted to the A7Rii is taking up exactly same amount of space as the A99 with 16-35 F2.8 CZ next to it, especially since I put the grip on the A7Rii. With 70-200 zoom in the bag, I’m in the typical DSLR size category and my pack is full. Nothing new here, but the smaller zooms would make it a big deal for me. Anyhow… not that much left to wait for the fast zooms, so we’ll see soon enough!

  13. Spoke to a Sony rep at IFA and he also said that 7/8 lenses are coming this year, wouldn’t tell which ones because ‘the roadmap was not updated yet’ and ‘a lot of lenses are being developed and they decide last minute which ones to announce by looking at which ones can be ready for production the fastest’ (and are ready for production of course) I’m keeping my fingers crossed for an FE portrait lens! An other person told me not to get my hopes up for an A99II though, camera didn’t sell that good and with E/FE-mount going strong most effort and money goes toward developing that line.

    1. Well usually these reps aren’t well informed. Last year I asked about the 16-35mm and he didn’t even know it would be announced, which it was like 1-2 weeks later.

      1. Oh, sorry, meant employee instead of rep. Quite high up in the food change… Got a distinct feeling that he did know, but just wouldn’t tell.

    1. The F1.2 would really be just a number but in practical terms only so minimal different to F1.4 that it is not really worth it in my opinion.

  14. I’d be happy to get a 100-300mm F4, with a matched 1.4x TC option to go with it. Of course the 1.4x TC could be used with some other lenses too – which would be a wonderful addition to the E-mount line…and with a 100-300mm F4, it would yield 140-420mm F5.6 without being too huge – should be able to contain it to 4lbs and 12-14 inches length…plenty handholdable for birders and sports shooters.

  15. So what your saying is…in just one week we will have 7 new fast lenses announced and a tele PLUS no rumor of an A99II on the 3 year anniversary of the A99. The coffin is beyond buried…you can stop piling all the dirt on top of it now. Geez….

  16. It is long over due for a 24-105 f4 FE or a 24-105 A mount lens, I think that it what a lot of us want as it is just such a good focal length. The Canon 24-105 nice lens but was using it via adapter on my a7 which just made focusing slow and clucky

  17. I don’t know why, but this ‘announcement’ just strengthened my feeling that I have no interest in Full Frame and no intention of spending thousands on these big, heavy lenses. At some point the temporary advantage of the larger sensor is going to disappear – that advantage comes from current semiconductor technology, not some optical magic of legacy dimensions. And then a lot of people are going to have a huge pounding Full Frame hangover.

      1. No I don’t. I’m just expressing a general feeling. Obviously they contain more glass than is necessary for APS-C so in that sense they’re bigger and heavier than necessary.

        1. I was kidding.
As 90% of my shots are made in bad light conditions, the size of the sensor is really important to me. APSC isn’t a solution to me.
If you look at FF over all brands, the A7-series with the FE-lineup is really small and lightweighted.

          1. Yes in some situations I would have appreciated the better low-light performance, but for what I do, noise reduction in post processing handles things pretty well. It’s obvious from this ‘road map’ that the marketing pressure to “move up” to FF is only intensifying. Every user making that change will buy thousands of dollars in new gear. All the camera makers are climbing into this lifeboat.

    1. While you might be able to wait five years for some magical small sensored camera that will kill the full frame market, professional photographers need full frame lenses right NOW to take the best photos they can with the technology of the present..

      1. Full frame was a “jack of all trades” kind of system when it came out and still is. It’s just the best compromise as of right now for numerous and varied reasons. Many of those reasons have zilcho to do with IQ.

Magical small sensored cameras are already chipping away at the FF market like the germanic tribes that took over Rome. Fuji has created a cult like following and within a certain demographic so has Olympus. I’m pretty sure some of those guys would march of a cliff for their favorite brand.

In some countries, the DSLR is seriously DEAD already. Long live PanOly.

    2. Try an A7 + Loxia combo and you will understand that what you just wrote is nonsense. Nothing with a crop sensor can touch that compact magic.

    3. Not the case, Jim. I won’t be surprised to see medium format become a little more popular in the future. Crop sensors have their place, for sure, but Full Frame is not going anywhere.

    4. Not sure you want to point that out in a FF thread. I agree though. I’ve got gear lust, but secretly- I’m a M43 kind of guy. I’d be happy with just the A77II as well. In fact, it was one of the reasons I sold my A7. The pictures are no different and to much DOF is a disadvantage. Not every shot is a 10-20 feet away portrait requiring the background to be thrown out. 9 times out of 10 I’m at 3.5- 5.6.

Noise is pleasant on M43 and quite a few .95 lenses. I feel like FF is the one that is in the middle. If Sony ever releases a true medium format I’d totally skip any 35mm set up. I’d love to see a MF camera with tilt shift functions like a 4×5 field camera and a 96MP sensor. I’ll keep dreaming.

  18. Still dreaming about small & light 75 mm f2.0. So uch batter suitable for mirrorless than 85 mm f1.4. Zeiss Batis 85 is already quite big in mirrorless terms, 85 mm f1.4 would be monstrous on A7 bodies :-/

  19. And then Friday came and Sony announced no new lenses. What a crummy SR4 rumor this was. I guess it will happen another day.

    1. That was indeed a big let down as that one soruce usually shared correct rumors in the past. Now I am thinking that Sony will announce them shortly after the show just liek they did back in February at the CP+ where I had a similar lens rumor.
