Image on top shows the Sony roadmap for Spring 2015. That is when the new A6xxx was planed to be released.
–
Ah gosh! I really hate that A6xxx camera story. The camera was long due to be released in Spring 2015 (as leaked on the Sony roadmap document above). But Sony is keeping pushing back the release.
In August a trusted source said the camera release was scheduled between September and October. The same source shared other correct rumors like for example the Sony Europe Online Store closure (rumor here) or FS5 camera specs (rumor here). So he has a solid track of correctly shared rumors. But tonight he contacted me back and told me the following:
- Sony Tokyo decided to push back (again!) the A6xxx announcement to February-March 2016
- Sony Tokyo did not unveil the reason for that but he suspects that strong A7rII sales and increased production necessity let them decide to focus on the A7srII (and A7sII) first.
I am really upset by this as it’s hard to get reliable on the A6xxx rumors if Sony keeps changing the roadmap.
Very personal note:
I remind you that I am very busy on a personal family level (one son with not too serious but very busy health issues) and work (major documentary projects) level til Spring. So sorry for any delay in email checking, and for the less good reliable rumor the late 12 months. I will have more time to spend on sources and rumors from February 2016.

Enough is enough! If this is true, Sony is basicly slapping all the aps-c owners with their FF line in the face and at the same time shouting out loud: “Upgrade to FF,upgrade to FF! Don’t wait any more!”
PS: Hope you kid get soon better Andrea.
No it is not! As you believe rumors, you must read all the rumors out there! One of the rumors told that Sony had to deal with heat problems in the camera, so it take them a little longer to solve that. What do you want? A camera that is giving you heat problems (people will shout out loud that Sony is pushing the FF range as they are selling an APS camera with heat problems and when Sony tries to solve the heat problems people are shouting that they try to push the FF camera range as they take their time with releasing the new camera!
And you must remember these are all rumors. When the A6000 mII takes as long as the A6000 took after the Nex 6 release then we can tell that it will come soon. When Sony had heat problems, then it take a few more months!
Don’t forget the A6000 is the best selling mirrorless camera in the world, Sony need to come with a very good successor to keep the sales going!
It had heat problems in 4K mode. So if I had to decide between a camera without 4k now and a camera with 4k in 6 months I’d take the first one.
Also APS-C has advantages over FF. I already have an A7II but I still want a more capable APS-C camera.
Agree that APS-C has some advantages over FF, but it’s very
much the poor sister in Sony’s eyes.
If I had to decide between a 2K camera now and a 4K camera in 6 months for the same price, I would wait for the 4K version. It gives me more options for post-process – cropping into the video as a kind of digital zoom.
The only thing I am annoyed about: I don’t know what exactly I am waiting for. (IBIS? yes/no)
Besides internal 4K, i would love to see an intra-frame format like ProRes , or an intra-frame option for XAVC-S. Or even better, an CinemaDNG option. LOL Just kidding. This will never happen.
EDIT: XAVC-S only supports LongGOP. No intraframe. 🙁
Exactly, I have absolutely no problem waiting a bit longer if the camera is a mature product instead of a rushed, feature packed, soon to be obsolete product full of quirks.
If they would release a camera with heat problems, the same complainers would be the first ones who call Sony’s managers stupid fools.
Why? The A6000 was announced after the XT1 from Fuji and still is a better camera even with them trying to improve by fw updates.
There’s basically no equivalent model for the price.
Sony is slapping everyone with their FF line in the face, not just aps-c owners, which is in my eyes quite natural for a corporation. If you make a product that is more profitable than another, would you really not push the profitable one and release the less profitable one as fast as possible? What would you do if you were a manager?
I don’t like it too. An NEX-7 successor is long overdue. Maybe it’s a bad sign for APS-C users, but I think they (probably) just decided to delay the APS-C line, which could draw too much attention from the newly released A7 babies. No big deal. It’s a business decision, nothing personal.
Exactly. Don’t like it too, but makes perfect sense from their perspective.
Exactly. Of course they’re not going to offer a cheaper alternative until sales of their high-margin new 3 cameras aren’t the new kid in town. 6 months from now? Perfectly safe to release new cheaper models.
Yep.
No, it is not, come back to reality. Pro enthusiast bodies normally take 2 years to update. This is NORMAL.
what about a3xxx/a5xxx ?
a3000 has not seenupdates for 2 years, a3500 is identical camera
Whats next. New lenses delayed until summer 2027
Any news on a7 mark 3?:)
Calling for replacement 9 month after release kind of disturbs me. Is the camera world really moving towards the smartphone world, where every 12 month your $$$ gadget gets obsolete by design?
Time is definitely more than right for a real NEX-7 successor, but your call for an a7iii (it wasn’t a joke, right?) really is beyond me.
I’m looking at the a7ii. But I don’t want to get it if the iii is around the corner…
There has been no chatter of an A7iii. I think you’re safe.
There was no chatter about the A7II either. Launch was a complete surprise to everybody, including SAR.
Damn. I wasn’t following the site when the a7ii launched. Didn’t know that.
😉
SR1 rumor that the A7iii will be released sometime during 2016…
Why should a camera be obsolete?
I don’t know the future. All I know is that I can still use my iPhone as a phone, but it’s not the smartphone (that’s what i paid for back then) anymore. Most apps are osolete, almost all communication related apps are unusable. I can use some games.
On the other hand, I use a Ricoh GR since 2 years and I can’t imagine that it will be obsolete, or feel obsolete in the next 5 years. But who knows?
It doesn’t matter if it is really obsolete, What matters is, if it’s obsolete in your head. Read this forum, there are already many people who are calling 1 year old tech obsolete.
How is your camera becoming obsolete, precisely? It seems that this can only be a personal problem for people who can’t stop themselves from buying the latest gadget.
Gosh I really hope we’re not moving to a yearly schedule – I don’t even see how it would be possible, sensors are so good already it takes considerable time to improve on them, unlike smartphones, which are still very young tech.
It is however getting annoying when all these people whine and cry doom for APSC after a year and a half. Pro enthusiast bodies have always refreshed every 2 years at a minimum.
ok, a6000 might be enthusiast camera, but what about a3xxx and a5xxx? where’s their refresh? where’s a5x refresh?
E-mount APS-C is dead for Sony or at best in a vegetative state waiting for the plug to be pulled. I have been very happy with their APS-C camera’s since the NEX 5 and still am happy with my current a6000, but the last few months cannot shake the feeling that Sony does not care anymore.
Welcome to A-Mount club!
One of us! One of us! 😛
Yeah I’m beginning to feel like that too. 😉

+1 … people who thinks you guys are mental.
I can use all my emount lenses for super 35mm video on an A7Rii without adapter. And you?
I can use all my A-Mount lenses on my A-Mount body without adapter. Next!
touche!
Not sure about that. If I see all the Japanese tourists with their NEX-cameras I think that Sony might lose a money generating mass market to Fuji or M4/3 if they abandon the small APS-C cameras.
Why should they not care? Do you only care of a product line as a company if you push out 3 cameras a year? I don’t get it.
One camera every two years is fine by me to be honest. To me it is more about the E-mount APS-C system as a whole and the attention it has been getting from Sony over the past two years.
.
I get that FE needed a boost, but Sony could at least have shown us a roadmap for APS-C. Even if it was just a lens roadmap showing that it would take until Q1 2017 before a new lens is planned would be better than hearing nothing at all.
.
Maybe Sony has no idea about APS-C’s future (hard to believe) or maybe they are very bad at communicating their plans, but to me it feels like they are stringing their customers along at the moment.
.
So in other words: Sony does not really show that they still care.
“E-mount APS-C is dead for Sony or at best in a vegetative state waiting for the plug to be pulled.”
Yep, these are the only two possible conclusions.
APS-C E-mount is as dead as Nikon DX or Canon EF-S. It continues to exist, and there will be an infinite onslaught of boring APS-C cameras and lenses, but the exciting stuff is happening in full frame.
And I cannot think of one valid reason why Sony should act differently. None of the APS-C-centric companies have ever been successful. Compare Pentax to Canon. Compare Fuji to Nikon. It’s stupid business. Amateurs will use cell phone cameras, pros want full frame. You’d have to be insane to cater to the handful of zealots in between that.
I think this was a wise decision from Sony. The full frame advancements in mirrorless are what are really getting Sony attention. Full frame is where the excitement is, and for good reason. Full Frame cameras are producing a lot of beautiful images.
You can now buy the A7 on Amazon for about $1000. Maybe it is time to upgrade to Full Frame. Enthusiasts who want features and quality probably should upgrade. Simple hobbyists are taken care of by the A5xxx line. The A6000 is still a great camera. Sony doesn’t need to divert its resources to refreshing the flagship APS-C so often. Resources should be directed towards the more exciting ultimate enthusiast flagship products: Full Frame Mirrorless. I can see in the dark with my A7S. No more limits. Worlds of new possibilities in photography are opening up with Sony’s Full Frame mirrorless cameras. Let’s support Sony when they keep pushing the possibilities of photography forward.
It seems Sony is just disappointing everybody with their focus on FE: not only enthusiasts and pros (A-Mount/Alpha users), but also the casual shooters (APS-C E-Mount).
FE is too small and lacks so much to attract DSLR/SLT users, and at the same time too big and expensive for the A6000 crowd (as comments here show).
It’s like those weird camera/phone hybrids by Samsung, neither here nor there. Shame the beautiful A7S sensor was wasted there, instead of going into a full-featured body like an A99-II.
Maybe it is A7000 now for photo plus and new A6000 for next year.
2 years ago there was complaining about too many Sony bodies and yearly updates. Now there is a little delay for whatever reason and the people freak out because the “promised” new camera didn’t come like expected. The A6000 is a great camera guys and the next version is probably just not ready yet, so keep calm before crying over the dead of APS-C…
Complaining seems to be half the fun in photography currently, in fact is makes up the majority of posted comments.
That is a serious long delay….
Probably make me choose another brand …cause I have no interest in buying a $3000 FF body only for 4k ability in a ILC formfactor.
RX10-II and RX100-IV are not of interest to you, if you want 4K?
They are not ILC….I allready have a FZ1000
That’s a downer.
It is all very well Sony concentrating on FF cameras, but most of those are out of the price range of most and who needs 40MP anyway? The bottom end of the range is poor compared to the competition. If Sony neglect the bottom end of the market they will find themselves painted into a cul-de-sac.
It helps me anyway. I was considering a A6****, a fuji or Olympus mirrorless, but were holding off till Oct. If Sony are delaying again, then it makes the decision easier
How is the a6000 “poor compared to the competition”?
As an a99 user I can relate to the frustration. However, Sony has put out more cameras in the last 2 years than some manufacturers in the last 7. If there is truly an overheating issue, I’m glad they’re waiting. Could you imagine the parade that all the Sony/Mirrorless haters would have concerning that kind of problem?!
‘See! Look!! Dslr is the greatest! They never overheat!’ (That’s mainly because they have not progressed technologically in about 10yrs) ‘Mirrorless are toys compared to my 10lb dslr MONSTER!!!’
When anyone one who has actually used a mirrorless knows better.
If they add more of the latest developments (silent shutter, IBIS, fast AF with adapters, focus stacking (Oly 4.0 Firmware) I can wait through the winter. What I would like is a more open information policy of Sony so that I know what to expect.
That would kill the sales of older models.
That’s what usually happens when new models come out, not?
Yes, but only when they are announced. You won’t ever hear a manufacturer openly telling the public what to expect in future cameras.
I think IBIS is not possible in such a small camera. For me silent shutter and fast AF with A-mount lenses would be enough.
To push Sony, people needs to stop buing A6000 camera!
What about Olympus M4/3 cameras? They are not at all bigger, but have a very good IBIS.
They are both bigger and have smaller sensor
Ah I see. Yeah then it must be impossible for Sony to build this into a new APS-C model.
Maybe possible, but definitely won’t be as easy. Or new APS-C will be bigger.
but definitely won’t be as easy.
and that is why the camera is delayed this long. I hope to see a really great product.
I am 95% sure if new aps-c has IBIS it’ll noticeable heavier (unless they remove shutter which is unlikely)
I’d be OK with it being a little bigger if it gives me IBIS.
IBIS should be possible. A6000 is quite big already (bigger than NEX-6) and the second gen. A7 series (which have a bigger sensor) is not much bigger in terms of width.
It’ll come when it comes. Format of a6000 is just right for me. Would love better IQ, IBIS, etc, and the A7 series is small for what it is, but it’s still double the volume and weight of the a6000.
Thats what I would prefer:
1. An affordable FF body in NEX7/A6000 form factor and size.
2. More affordable AND compact FF lenses, with decent but not spectacular optics.
Remember the film days, there was enough room for products in all price levels and all were full-frame.
Then I wouldn’t mind if they ditch APS-C completely.
I have a mixed feeling about ditching APS-C completely.
Currently APS-C models have faster framerate and faster autofocus. Some people would miss that on the “A5”.
If there is this A5 (with IBIS), I personally would go for it as soon as possible and forget about APS-C completely. I often take picutes of dancing people in low light. (Well – autofocus speed…. sigh)
I used the wonderful Olympus Pen FT, a half-frame film camera, especially for travelling the world. Wasn’t tempted back into digital, until the NEX-5 arrived. And used the Pen FT lenses, too. For the travel environment, where shots may come at any time, a small camera is invaluable. Maybe Sony believe that this sector is now covered by the 1″ sensors.
I honestly don’t think it’s physically possible to do that with current sensor technologies, at the very least dealing with the heat issues would be extremely difficult. The A7S is kind of a similar size/volume, but there’s just not the space on the left to fit an EVF of the size that would be required for FF, and it doesn’t have IBIS.
Maybe in a few years …
Sony needs to come out with an A5 ultra-compact full frame camera. And more lenses like the 35/2.8.
IPhones come Every year, should pro, semi-pro cameras that are tools for professionals come once a year?
I don’t think so, that is what I call milking the market!
Wait a few more months, a camera that doesn’t heat, a stable one and maybe cheaper due to reduced production costs.
The usual nonsense.
Let me guess – The A7s II preorders are that huge that they decided to focus on that first. That´s no good sign for the APS-C E-Mount sector (at least on the consumer level). =/
But probably a good sign for someone who saves to buy an “obsolete” A7S soon.
Not this again… Sony doesn’t have infinite manufacturing capacity. They just announced THREE full frame bodies that they have to make, and if they’re having strong demand, the logical thing is to focus your money and fabs on those instead of releasing another model that’ll take time, money and manufacturing resources. Specially when the A6000 is still selling great.
2 years is the NORMAL schedule for pro-enthusiast cameras.
those THREE bodies are barely different save the sensor
So?
it doesn’t cost more to support three models if they are largely identical
If a company has 2 assembly lines that they can use to make their products and the company has 2 products then all is good. If 3 rd product is released the company needs to choose witch two products they are going to make at half capacity bacause there is no assembly lines for all three products. So it is not all about the money.
I hope this example is easier for you to understand than what Xabi said.
Of course it does. But it costs less than three compeltely different models. Still Sony needs to fulfill the huge demands now, whether its one, three or five models… the huge demand of the A7 series came by surprise.
There is zero doubt apsc will continue…but Sony has placed a priority on ff and wants to get that fully established before Canon and Nikon introduce thier ff mirrorless cameras around the end of this year…there will be some fierce competition ahead.
animalsbybarry, you claim that Canon and Nikon is going to introduce their FF mirrorless cameras in a couple of months, as if this is a FACT. If so, please substantiate your claims! I can not see that you base your claims on anything more than pure beliefs and zero ability to analyze the camera market and its manufacturers.
The reason for Sony’s success in the mirrorless market is that the vital ingredients in this type of camera happen to be the same as the strengths of Sony, built up during decades – they are leaders in electronics, innovation and sensors. Canon and Nikon possess none of these. Sony is used to the “brutal” development speed in the electronic sector. This is very far from the slow progress of cameras from manufacturers with core competence within mechanic and optics, where “new” models aren’t much different from their previous. Canon hasn’t even been able to offer ONE SINGLE DSLR or mirrorless camera with an EVF yet! Look at their horribly clumsy “solution” to their lack of this kind of competence in their XC10…
But even worse than this is – their cannibalization horror. They don’t WANT TO make FF mirrorless cameras. With experience only of low end ML cameras, they would have no chance in hell to surpass what Sony has now, let alone what Sony will have come up with the day when those two are ready to launch something. If it ever will happen.
Because none of them can give what their users REALLY expect and want, i.e. to be able to use all their EXISTENT lenses on these new FF mirrorless. Nikon screw drive lenses won’t work at all. Unless they pay license to Sony for using the technology in the LA-EA4 adapter – how likely is that? Their other “fat camera” lenses with built-in AF motor will work, but not as good as lenses made specifically for mirrorless systems.
And because of Sony, they can’t charge as much for these FF mirrorless cameras as they can now for their FF DSLR cameras – they have both so many times said that these are “real” cameras!
.
It seems unlikely that the a6xxx will just be a minor upgrade to the a 6000.
With all these delays it seems much more likely to have at least one major technology advance, complete with bugs to be worked out.
Also with the increased Sony/Canon competition climate it also seems likely Sony will te the release to be after an important Canon release like they did with the a7rii.
I rcently saw the Best Buy display…it only promotes mirrorless cameras and the headline is ” MIRRORLESS, THE NEXT GENERATION OF CAMERAS”
That should make it quite obvious that Sony has absolutely no intention of ever producing new A mount cameras.
Mirrorless a-mount?
Not gonna happen.
Sony will not desighn and build a whole new camera just so you do not need an adapter.
Mayby new adapters…and you can pretend they are new A mount cameras.
I’m sure many will whine, but I think this is fine. The A6000 is selling like hotcakes still, there’s no rush for Sony and it’s smarter for them to focus on the new models they have just released, specially if they’re enjoying strong sales. Besides, this allows me to enjoy my 5N for another half year and upgrade around my birthday next year. Take your time, Sony.
Hope your son gets better
Fine by me. Take your time Sony and give me a great a7000 worthy of an a6000 sucessor.
In the meantime you can fill the gaps in the APS-C lens line up, we need a 16mmf1.8 , a 16-50mmf2.8 and a 55-300mmf4.5-5.6.
Worthy of an NEX 7 you mean?
Anything less thand tri-navi will be a shame.
I felt Tri-Navi was awful, RIP
But Tri-Navi is out anyway, long live A7 series’ Quattro-navi :)…
You mean NEX 7 successor?
I’ll take an 85mm 1.8.
So I guess I should not sell my NEX-7 just yet.
more time for sony to improve their crappy lens lineup…..
Huh? They are not even trying. Unless you are mounting huge and heavy and obscenely overpriced FE lenses on a6000. 🙂
Take your time, Sony?… Many people will change to canon or nikon or to another brand… at least when a semi pro aps-c with 5-axis image stabilization (or another tech of optical stabi) and 4k releases… sorry but thats not that what a consumer requires from a brand like sony. you have now a7, a7II, a7s; a7r, a7rII and more in the same time after release of a6000 and a7 (ok a7 release was 4 month later). Another point is the tardy/bad service and support for semi-level. So many feature requests in any official sony communities but not one of them will be fixed (except pro cams). Many rumors many a7 gear and kits but no semi-level tech for the consumer. Keep it sony I will try another brand at least after your new roadmap which is only for pro’s… The minolta time is officialy ended for me…
LOL @ the drama!
The only benefit of APS-C E-mount over Fuji/Olympus/Panasonic is that you can buy nice & compact full frame lenses (e.g. 35/2.8, 55/1.8, 28/2) and eventually upgrade to full frame without needing to sell your lenses. Lessons learned from Canon and Nikon.
Thats not a benefit for people on a budget or people that need a compact system, which FE clearly is not. By all indications FE will get more and more expensive. And as sensor technology evolves less and less people do need FF.
@disqus_7KmYdtc7ma:disqus
Thats wrong… but I dont tell why. Learn it self -> http://www.google.de
and accordingly, it’s selling like hot cakes. There’s no real rush to release. Probably gives Sony more time to tweak firmware also.
It’s only a dream but for the A7III would be awesome if they made an accessory like this one.
http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTA2NlgxNjAw/z/DHMAAOSwpDdVLtbs/$_35.JPG
Not a vertical grip, just a quick charge battery extender (+6 Ah) with extra SD card slot, connected via bottom USB 3.0 type C port.
And what benefit does it have over a vertical grip?
6000 mAh quick charge internal plus SD card slot, that doesn’t add that much bulkyness of the grip?
The grip that exists are hideous and just get 2020mAh, its too short for an accessory that’s massive like that.
That was a power wonder , 2 frames per second.
It was not a battery grip and did not power the camera.
A device like that would serve no fntion for a digital camera.
I want something like this and not THAT exact accessory. Something that is less bulky than the vertical grip that only holds two battery (2Ah), when any powerbank in the market with that size would hold more than 10 Ah of charge, and be able of quick charging.
Dammit, look at that X-700! There was a time when Minolta had great product design.
Right in time for my birthday!!! (always look at the bright side of rumor life)
Does E-mount (not FE) feels like A-mount felt for a while now? Formally not abandoned yet, but in fact?…
Troll angst.
No… no it doesn’t.
No, far from it. When someone doesn’t come out with a model every single damn year, people seem to make assumptions.
Last A mount camera to come with was tha A77ii, just a little over a year ago, the A-99, slightly 3 years ago. Nikon seems to update their prosumer cameras every 2-ish years. I would consider the A6000 as a prosumer camera, therefore current trends do not indicate that Sony is “abandoning” the E mount line. Sony has clearly stated in the past that they are still supporting the A mount line but yet so many consumers are getting all pissy with sony.
It was quite long since last E-mount APS-C lens was announced.
Fonk:
There were also a few people who were disappointed with the A6000 as a NEX upgrade but don’t want to go FE.
Faster AF, colorshift greatly improved, better high ISO and not satisfied?
Do they judge camera by amount of metals in it?
I know, I can’t believe people are getting so worked up over the a6000 successor. The a6000 was just released LAST YEAR. Do people really need to upgrade/replace their camera every friggin’ year?
I want tri nav, weather sealing and ibis. I don’t care if its 6 months or 18 months, just give me that in apsc….
So, how it is “far from it”? “Last A mount camera to come with was tha A77ii, just a little over a year ago”… well, last E-mount camera, A5100 (very simple update, basically a6000 guts in a5000 body), was also released more than a year ago, and the same with their lenses (actually, a few A-mount lenses were updated later than the last APS-C E-mount lens).
Looks like in the same boat, not formally abandoned, but neither is thriving or being developed ANYWHERE close to the speed of other systems like Canon EF, Nikon F (both APS-C and FF), Sony FE, m43, Fuji X… all of which have BOTH new bodies and lenses released since last E-mount bodies and lenses.
And it is easy to understand why. Sony can sell A7rII at $3200, while a6100 would need to be priced at $650-700 or so, ~5 times the difference while the marginal cost probably differs by no more than 2 times and even less (which is just a couple hundred $$$ max), and fixed costs being ~the same. They have to milk the margins while they can.
Forget about the bodies, if you take your time to see when APS-C E-mount lenses were released and what type of lenses, you will know that it has been way too long since the last prime lens for this format, but plenty of zoom lenses and even so, it has been quite long as well. Lack of new lenses or even a roadmap tell us a better story than just bodies.
Of course, I am not talking just about bodies either.
Moreover, a few new products for the system does not men the system is not dead. For example, Canon had released a few long lenses for FD after it had already been replaced by EF – which were simply repackaging of the new EF lenses without AF etc. Canon T60 was released in 1990, 3 years after Canon de facto switched to EOS (EF mount).
For a system to be alive, it has to at least try to compete, and for that a certain minimum of innovations has to happen, and a5100 in 2014 did not qualify just like Canon T60 in 1990. And the same with Sony 70-200/2.8G II in 2013 or 70-300 II in 2014 – newer AF motor and updated coating does not a new lens make.
It was firstly rumored one year ago, waiting too long.. A6000 lacks something (my personal opinion) to improve my video/photo work, A7r/s II too expensive so now i start considering Pana gx8 or oly em5 II for travel documentaries and photos.. Am i wrong? Best wishes for your son and thanks for all you are sharing at the same time. PK
Good thing I bought my a6000. Thanks Sony for making me feel better about not waiting!
The A6000 was released feb 2014…its just reaching about the same age as the A7r before it got updated. But in reality, the A6000 doesnt have nearly ad many issues as the a7r did. What’s it really missing? Ibis and 4k are really the only two things and i wouldnt exactly call the camera crippled without it. For the sector the a6000 is going after, those who bought an a5000 or similar entry level, the camera is still an instant upgrade. The hardcore enthusiast level is being covered by the A7 series. It doesnt seem like sony wants to or has the resources to cover that sector in the APS-c arena. But thats the beauty of choice, if sony doesnt work, find a company that gives you everything you want?
Sony now knows for certain cannon will release a 120mp ff camera in the near future.
They also know for certain about a 8k video and BR lens technology to be used in 600mm lens.
They also know both Cannon and Nikon will release thier ff mirrorless cameras around the end of this year.
Sony must be ready for this competition…that is more important to Sony’s future than timely release of tje a6xxx since this camera is not dorectly geared towatds the battle to come.
The rumour that just keeps giving! (Since 2013)
Yes I forgot those rumours.
There is also the Sony E mount 85/1.8 rumour from January 2013 I believe.
Luckily Zeiss made the Batis lens and I don’t care about Sony variant any more.
haha good one! xD
Does Sony want me to bring my money to Canon which is going to release this year new and higher APS-C mirrorles? Or to Fuji???
I think Sony is gearing up for the ‘full-frame mirrorless battle’ to come (with Canon and Nikon). They need to focus on the A7RII production, FF lenses, and grabbing as much market share (by converting CaNikon users) as they can in the next 6 months. 2016 is going to be an interesting year!!
And I guess no A99ii
The new Sony D400 :()
Brilliant! 😉
LOL
In the beginning I wait slowly, but after a while my waiting gets quicker and quicker
Patience is a virtue
Too bad, I guess I will go with a Panasonic then. I need 4k video. A7rii is great but c’mon.
Makes sense… Looking at analytics anyone can see that the a6000 has been the number 1 selling mirrorless camera making up most of the Sony camera sales the past year. If Sony were to release a revamped a61000 with 4k recording and lightning fast autofocus at a sub $1,000 price, it would obliterate sales of the New $3000 A7Sii and $3300 A7Rii.
We all know you don’t need a full frame sensor to record 4k (being that it is only 8mp). The Gh4 is currently still the king of videography and it only has a 4/3 sensor. With recent reports of overheating issues when recording 4k on the A7Rii, and the price tag, theres just too many reasons to play it safe and purchase an a6100 until technology gets a little bit better… and give people a chance to wait for an A7Riii/Siii while using capable 4k recording.
Sony is going to wait for sales of the A7RII/Sii to drop before releasing the A6100.
Considering the A6000 suffers from very little rolling shutter/jello effect, I would almost consider it possible to implement 4k via a firmware update. However, that wouldn’t give Sony any more money.
it’s not only sensor, but CPU too.
Altrough with slower fps (timelapse!!) it would be possible…
The A6000 is still the top selling mirrorless camera and one of the top selling ILCs….
Thus, I suspect upgrading it is a rather low priority. Still a bit surprised we won’t see any new APS-C camera before the holiday shopping season.
Further, if all production capacity is going to the A7 series, then that really does rule out an A-mount for this year.
This, the delay is because the A6000 has great legs, no need to rush the replacement for the best selling body in the segment.
IBIS + 4K + possible PD-AF support for adapted lenses (like the A7rii)= These are each potentially BIG upgrades.
IBIS and A7RII OSPDAF are really the only two things I want from an APS-C body that I don’t have now.
Both would be excellent, but even just one would solve the total lack of options for stabilized long lenses on APS-C.
IBIS – EA4 + unstabilized A-mount glass like Tamron 150-600
A7RII OSPDAF – EF adapter + stabilized EF-mount glass like Tamron 150-600
(Tamron 150-600 is OSS on all mounts EXCEPT A because all native-A bodies have IBIS.)
Agreed. I’ve considered adding the A6000 as my second camera, but am holding off for possible OS-PDAF support. I couldn’t care less about 4K, but it’s clearly being added to all/most future Sony cameras.
From a business standpoint, OS-PDAF support for adapted lenses is a likely one simply because a strength of the short flange distance is adaptability, and there is apparently a strong market for adapting lenses on E-mount and MFT… though at the same time, with E-mount, it’s sort of apparent that among the reasons people adapt is because native lenses for their purpose simply don’t exist. So that may well be the real reason for the delays. Just no glass. And the apparent focus on FF may just be to show that they are competitive. Heck, the A7Rii may well be the siren call that draws the serious fanatics over to E-mount, so why wouldn’t they focus on it? Sure, APS-C is a bigger market, but as many people have pointed out, they are doing just fine there; the A6000 is still selling well, and is an awesome camera by all measures.
At the same time, there is no perfect camera, and there never will be, so people will always want something more, especially when there are murmurs on the street, and there’s always something 1 or two notches better on some other neighbor’s lawn… I find it hilarious, though, the way people talk as if it’s Sony that is being foolish for all the delays in answering the call of their own demands. IBIS, weather-sealing, and a mic-in jack are big value-adds for me personally, while 4K is a plus point, but not a necessity…but I have different uses than lots of other people. OS-PDAF for adapted lenses is also of lesser importance for me because I’m more likely to adapt legacy manual focus lenses (because they can be had for dirt cheap). Still, it opens up options that I wouldn’t have considered otherwise, so bonus.
Of course, my personal high-priority factors does mean that my “default” turn of the eye is facing Olympus, but the thought that there might be something APS-C from Sony to meet those same requirements is definitely intriguing (especially as it means better low-light and far better video). The false consensus fallacy is to assume, though, that what applies to oneself is generic… and it manifests here such that people say “well, this proves that Sony doesn’t care at all about their customers!!!”… “This is why Sony is faltering as a company!!” “Sony are such failures at all things!” Ummm… no… it’s just you projecting your disappointment onto them. Heck, I’m disappointed, too, as news like this, if validated, effectively puts their next APS-C product too far out in time for it to be of any value to me… but that’s my problem, not Sony’s
I’m still pretty sure Sony will release at least one new APS-C camera before the holiday season. This source was wrong before so why would we trust it now.
If they continue to delay this over and over, I might try something else if Canon or Nikon steps up their mirrorless game. I’m not heavily invested in Sony lenses, and the 16-70mm F4 should be easy enough to sell if that time comes. Last year, I actually returned my A6000 because it’s replacement was “just around the corner”. I’m getting sick of these delays, Sony!
Wow really your A6000 (or the one you don’t have) started taking worse pictures since June and they have been getting worse by the week? Really? Is it the A6000 or the device behind the viewfinder that is detoriating?
I didn’t say that. The A6000 is a great camera. But there are certain features on the replacement (if the rumors are true) such as IBIS that is a big deal to me, and I’d rather return the A6000 to the store and get all my money back, rather than selling it used and lose 200-300$. So two years in a row I’ve actually returned the A6000 within the return period, because just after I bought it, it looked almost certain that the replacement was going to be announced. I can do just fine without a camera for a little while. It’s just one of my hobbies. But it’s still annoying that Sony keeps delaying this release over and over again.
How you jumped to conclusions that I thought the A6000 was bad and had to be replaced is beyond me…
it doesn’t look like the Sonys are out of stock and buyers queue in order to buy them
This may be great news if Sony decide to roll one more update for the a6000 like Olympus did with M1. Silent shooting mode will be great. AF Improvements could be done for more tracking precision. Why not roll out some apps for long exposure same as Olympus live composites etc. How about focus bracketing or combining multiple shots for interesting Dof effects. There is a lot Sony can do in Firmware. We do not need new crop sponsor hardware yet. A6000 is fantastic hardware just prop up the firmware. Probably AF with canon glass can also be done same as a7r2
I would be OK with the delay if they find a way to backport the A7RII’s improvements for OSPDAF with adapted lenses using a firmware upgrade. Otherwise – GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
Sony is completely devoid of any solution for long telephoto lenses on E-mount unless you purchase an A7RII. (Well I guess the A7II/A7SII + LA-EA4 would be acceptable too…) No IBIS means that adapted A-mount glass with an EA4 lacks stabilization on all other bodies. It’s clear that Sony wants adapted A-mount glass to be part of the E-mount ecosystem, but since nearly all A-mount glass lacks OSS thanks to all native A-mount bodies having IBIS, if you want A-mount glass to be part of the E-mount ecosystem, we need far more E-mount bodies with IBIS.
If they backported the A7RII’s OSPDAF tricks to the A6000, then OSS EF-mount glass with an adapter would work.
I use 70-400 on A6000 no problems with long telephoto for me. I am not sure why one would wish for stabilization on 70-400 – really? Why? The amount of shake at 400mm exceeds the size of the frame hand held – it is not possible to stbailize wiht any stbailization system in lens or in body. However using tripod/monopod works miracles.
Tried the Nikon 200-500mm. It made me a believer in their VR. 4.5 stops easy.
I thought I had shaky hands… You must be a walking earthquake.
Sigma 50-500 + Pentax IBIS (they call it SR) worked quite well for me.
I assume Sony’s mirrorless IBIS also works for the EVF, so that would be even better. (My Bigma was non-stabilized and Pentax SR does not benefit the viewfinder or AF systems.)
Delay based on rumors or some schedule that could have been charged easily, ok…
Can anyone be more specific about the “full-frame mirrorless battle to come (with Canon and Nikon)”? (some mentioned it) since i can not find any rumor that is not at least one year old. Any links or updated info to share?
I think the battle will not be as epic as expected: in my surrondings all the canikon users are holding their horses (and lenses) for whatever might come next.
Sorry to read about the family health problems; at least not too serious. That comes first so don’t apologise, rather thanks for all you have done. These are much better times for Sony users so we can all be grateful for that too.
Well, that’s just how it has been ever since Sony went FF. FF is the top priority and the APS-C not even come second, more like a third place or even lower.
Since the FF, the APS-C line up doesn’t get lenses roadmap, since then it just got some zoom lenses and nothing else for I don’t know how long, the high-end camera, which was a true NEX-7 successor was never launched, instead they come up with the A6000 saying it was also a NEX-7 successor but it’s clearly not and now even the A6000 successor is getting delayed, which is odd since Sony is used to release tons of bodies, at least one per year.
So, if you are a APS-C Sony user, don’t get your hopes high and don’t have any expectation, you are going to get frustrated. Be ok with that, buy a FF or jump ship into another brand.
They still do release a lot of bodies, albeit FF ones xD
And the new Panasonic all-in-one Super35 chipped camcorder spells trouble for you MFT ladies too, just maybe, as chips have gotten so cheap, manufactures are trying to put a little more distance between their products an the ubiquitous smartphone! Blame Panasonic for that one if you like, it was they after all that shoe-horned a MFT sensor into a cell-phone. Just sayin’
…
…
ok…
You’re not old enough to remember film, let alone Olympus’ love of half-frame film cameras, suffice to say, its a little like 3D, it comes and goes. Enjoy your half-frame digital Panasonic while you can, they’ve already started moving away from half-frame, first the VariCam 35, and now the DVX200. Say bye bye to your half-frame GH line. Just Sayin’
This is nonsense. All FE lenses work on A6000 and make it a fantastic camera. Your post is nothing more than trolling.
Trolling? Please… Just stop being a fanboy and use some logic, okay?
If I was to afford all the FE lenses why would I have a A6000? It would be better to simply buy a A7 instead. Of course the FE lenses work but is that the best way to support a system? Gimme a break! It’s a simple fact that Sony has not being supportive of the APS-C line since they adopt the FE system, why is that hard to understand and admitit?
It’s not a shame or anything, it’s just a fact and people can do whatever they want with that, as I said, they can upgrade to FF or choose another brand, that’s very far from trolling because… well, that’s logic, not irrational argument nonsense. People that turn constructive criticism and label it as “just trolling” for lack of true argument are really something, but hey, this is the Internet, so maybe I’m the odd here.
What are the advantages of a having an APS-C body? It’s smaller, it has smaller lenses, it has also cheaper lenses, etc. So is that the way to suport consumers? To ask them to buy bigger and more expensive lenses for their APS-C cameras, just because? Clearly not. The best way to support consumers that bought APS-C cameras is to deliver bodies and lenses for it – and I thought that was obvious.
If you already have a FF FE camera and lenses and use an APS-C camera as a B camera, it’s ok, you can swap lenses but if you are an exclusive APS-C user, having to afford and use FE lenses for lack of native APS-C lenses, this is far from ideal. If I’m wrong, please enlighten me, but this time, use some real arguments instead of nonsense.
To tell the truth, look at other systems that have a FF and an APS choice for their cameras (Canon and Nikon) how is their lens lineup for APS? Canon has 18 APS-C lenses, 5 of them are in the kit lens range (18-55mm), 3 55-250mm and 2 18-135mm lenses. One prime a 60mm macro lens f 2.8! Nikon does a lot better then Canon: 24APS lenses: 4 primes, 4 lenses in the kit range (18-55/70mm) and 3 55-200mm lenses, 2 18-200mm lenses, 2 18-300mm lenses
So Canon has in total 11 lenses you will really choose from, Nikon has 17 lenses to choose from.
And Sony APS for E-mount? 14 lenses, 2 in the kit range, 3 in the 18-200 range Total of 11 lenses to choose from 6 are primes, one is a macro prime. Compared to Canon and Nikon Sony is not doing very bad!
Could it be better? Yes, but it makes sense for Sony to investigate in the very good FE lens line as people who wants great lenses are willing to pay the price for it, as well in size as in dollars!
Look at the price of the pro lenses in the MFT range, they are not cheap and they are not really small either!
Just counting lenses is missing the point, you got to look at the focal length distribution and if you do, you will see a different story. And the only Macro for APS-C is a bad 30mm f/3.5, half of the primes are pancakes, with some quality compromise and all of the primes are all in the same range of 16-50mm – 16/20/24/30/35/50 – and only half of them are faster than f/2.8. Even Samsung is doing better than that. Sony had 2-3 years before they launched the FE line up, in 2-3 years Fuji released tons of lenses with great focal length distribution.
So if you are going to compare lenses, please use a bit more context to back it up, numbers, quantity, with no context are simply useless data to build an argument.
I don’t get your Micro4/3 lens comparison, PRO lenses are not cheap indeed, in any system, what’s the point? PRO lenses have PRO lenses price tag and quality, isn’t that normal? Also, Micro4/3 lenses are much smaller than any FF equivalent lens, what kind of parameter are you using to compare? 200mm Micro4/3 vs 200mm FF? That’s kind of losing the point then. Of course they will have similar size, it’s physics! But a Micro4/3 100mm (FF 200mm equivalent) vs a FF 200mm have quite a bit of size difference.
It does make sense for Sony to invest on FE lenses instead but what’s the point of that argument? Does that make them less negligent towards the APS-C users? Not really. I’m not saying that Sony needs to give the same support they are giving their FE line up. Actually I’m not saying Sony has to do anything, I’m just pointing out that it’s fair to say that APS-C users should move on or be content with how they have been neglected exactly because Sony won’t stop investing in their FE line up.
I totally understand that Sony had a great opportunity to be a pioneer in FF mirrorless market BUT let’s say that Sony could had been less negligent towards APS-C line up as well. It’s not unreasonable to ask for 1 or 2 lenses per year, is it? It would had made more sense to not have the A7 and have an A7000 instead, the price wouldn’t be that different and the A7000 would bring much more than the A7 does. But if there is an A7, there is little room to have an A7000 because it would make the A7 much less interesting. The thing is that a true A7000 could make even the A7R/s less interesting and that’s exactly why they are delaying this APS-C camera again.
In Canonland you’re supported through 3rd party manufacturers.
I had Sigma 50-150 f/2.8 for APS-C and it was a great lens.
There’re many options there, less so in mirrorless.
That’s exactly the Kool-Ade they’d like you to drink. Start buying those big, heavy, expensive lenses now, and think about when you’ll “move up” to FF.
Wish your son all the best Andrea.
a6000 is still good, but:
– Oly and some Panas have IBIS
– Samsung / Pana offer 4K
– Oly / Samsung / Pana allow to set focuspoint quickly per touchscreen
a6000 can compete with autofocus-speed, fps, image-quality and has best price. It’s a good allrounder, but nothing that beats them all.
Sure. And most of those are more expensive. So, not poor.
that reminds me, is samsung still in the game? i heard the rumor but not samsungs reply to it yet.. anyone know if they are still playing ball here?
personally i’m still waiting for three compact 4k cams that’ll shoot for 23-25mins without over heating here in China’s hot weather… i was hoping it’ll be three RX10m2’s then i saw the quality of that lens over 100mm yuk!, and said no wait and see how the a6xxx does.. all the tiny 4k capable cams so far have not made me jump yet.. samsung screwed the baby 500 up, pana’s LX100 tried hard but not there yet.. sony no where to be seen.. rx100m4 gives 5mins of 4k, not long enough for my interviews at all..
now i’m seriously considering three iphones with the bonus ipad app and be able to do multicam live streaming at the same time.. let’s see whats on offer today for this = RecoLive MultiCam.$4.99. nice but not live streaming but close enough i think.. speeds up HD multicam editing anyhow live switching.. almost good enough.. what else .. Switcher Studio Basic free for 30mins of multicam live streaming.. nicer.. and the big boys toys from Live:Air
By Teradek for $free with watermark and two cams to $99 for pro. so i can grab three borrowed iphones and a switcher app on the ipad and im in business.. live mutlicams..
68% of my youtube channel is watched on phones already.. so the going all out to multicam 4k may not even be worth the effort eh?…
sony – hurry up and wow me with the a6xx before i forget why i’m waiting and just settle for iphones for my productions!!!
The reason this is a shame is that the APSCE-mount system is still so unfinished. I got mine instead of other prosumer options as high as the D7100 etc, which in hindsight would have offered me far more room to grow with. Unfortunately now if I want the sort of system I thought I was buying I’ll have to switch to another brand.
If only Sony had released another higher-end body and a couple of extra lenses before they took their break, so many people would be far more satisfied.
I’m tempted to keep my E-lenses just in case Sony does come out with something, but in the meantime I’m getting a Pentax K3ii or a Fuji XT1 – the FE lenses are far too big and far far far too expensive.
Really? What is wrong with A6000? and how many new bodies did Nikon release to update D7200? You also have the A7 path to grow your system same a D750 in Nikon’s case.
Added Sony are releasing so much more lenses than Nikon for E mount that it is breathtaking. All of the new lenses are outstanding in terms of quality. Zeiss have jump in with the Batis lenses….there is hardly anything more to wish for except tons of cash to buy all the new lenses and accessories comming out.
I see this delay as very positive. Sony may put out another update to the firmware on top of the XAVC-S we got in June 2015 (not so long ago)
What is wrong with the A6000 system ?! Please tell me of one zoom lens in the daily walk around category (by which I mean 18-135mm/ 16-50 mm/18-55 mm) which is sharp and yet affordable. 16-50mm is a joke (look at the DXO mark field tests for sharpness, also: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdSj1dxNY00), 18-55 mm is not any better. (I’m not sure about the quality of the 18-105mm G-lens so I’ll accept my argument as flawed if it really is very good). The Zeiss 16-70mm FE lens is about a thousand dollars and there is a post which just came out on SAR saying it sucks.
Canon and Nikon both have a 18-135mm lens and they are sharp lens (again, you may see measurements on DXO Mark). I’ve used both of them and they are better than the Sony offerings, plus – they come as kit lens !
In the prime lens category, 50mm is 250$ and 35mm is 450$. Compare this to Canon: 50mm is 110$ and 40mm and 24mm are both 150$.
Sure the camera itself is great, but for a person like me who doesnt have $1000+ just to replace the kit lens (even then the options are not great), where would he/she go ? Hint: To Cs and Ns … Actually, I wouldn’t mind paying more for the a6000 is they had better lens selection.
Sorry for the rant but I am just very frustrated at the lack of options for a good Sony kit lens replacement. I like to travel and I really need one good lens for my pictures (18-135mm is perfect for me and serves 90% of my pictures).
The A6000 has some great specs but I dislike the low-res EVF, the lack of direct controls, the total lack of WR, the cheap build, a few other things. I got a NEX-6 thinking something of the same quality as the NEX-7 would be a natural upgrade, and unfortunately that never came. That is, of course, my fault for expecting the system to progress the way I (and many others) anticipated.
I have no interest in FF whatsoever right now, so the D750/A7 upgrade path doesn’t apply to me. I want a more prosumer APS-C than Sony have to offer. I have no interest in the FE lenses, they are all VERY expensive and very big (28mm excluded, but I find 28mm dull). If I were to spend that sort of money on lenses Fuji’s X-system is more appealing because of size/performance.
Had I got an XE2 and upgraded to an XT1, I think I’d have been very happy.
Granted like you say Sony have released more APS-C lenses than Nikon recently, but Nikon’s overall system is still far more complete, especially with Tamron/Sigma support, and if you want to put FF lenses on a crop body some of their primes are far cheaper than anything Sony has.
I agree 100%
Same here. I picked up the A6000 to replace my NEX-6, but it wound up replacing my D7100, too. Absolutely loved everything about the camera. Until I wanted to use it professionally like I did with the D7100. Ended up having to get SLT lenses, which made the camera near the same size and weight as my DSLR gear, but with poor handling. Had to go back to Nikon, where there are faster, sharper native lenses. Went D750 this time, though. No holding back.
Improvements in usability/construction/design that would benefit the successor and almost all Sony cameras (E/FE/RX)
1. Fast-intuitive way of selecting point of focus through a dedicated button-joystick or touchscreen (or whatever the solution is if it`s direct-intuitive)
2. Better Viewfinder is always welcome, better contrast/optics/refresh rate/definition so as to see a more accurate rendering of what is being captured and a more immersive experience and/or option of VF redering for better simulation independent of capture profile/settings.
3. Scratch Free LCD and/or being able to turn screen against body for protection.
4. Swivel+tilt rear LCD screen solution so as to have portrait tilt ability, Sony Alpha LCD prior solution on A77/69/99 seems a good reference point. Being able to turn screen against body for protection unless Sony starts building scratch resistant screens.
5. Further Color Science improvements in skin rendering, color separation and blown out areas (to my eye Canon has a better implementation in this respect)
6. Better Quality-compresion JPG rendering / artefacts free.
You don’t really need better constrast for EVF. EVF has advantage over OVF that it can compress
3.better yet: make remote control that acts like cover for LCD. +manual focus and aperture control on remote.
I wouldn’t know technically why but images through the EVF of my Sony Nex 7, the A6000 and A7/7r I have tried still look more contrasty than the image captured, shadows blocked/whites blown (and for that matter also the LCD) – if it’s a software thing it would be great if one could alter this or if they implemented a alternate setting/option, better yet and that’s the reason of my suggestion is if they would improve upon this in a manner that wouldn’t need user tweaking.
I always wondered why no one did a detachable lcd that doubled as a remote. Would have thought a robust slide in/out type of arrangement would work. Could Slide in reversed for transit.
I am sure I will find out now why it could never be done, would be nice though….
I think you should include better menus. That would also certainly help, Samsung and Leica did a nice job on that matter.
im interested if sony managers look at this site as well, if they do, I wonder how they feel when look at these rumors
because there could be a new A6xxx series, and it was planned to be launch at the beginning of this year, and or maybe delayed again and again, if the sources were correct. and these managers were those who make the decisions. and they know exactly the reasons of delay, or the other way round, they didn’t even have a A6XXX or it was not yet finished developing and it was actually just planned to announce next year from the very beginning therefore all the rumors were wrong.
honestly if I’m the manager, I would laugh out breathlessly loud.
There were no rumors of any camera released since the A7s. The A7II, A7rII and A7sII were all complete surprises. Yet we keep seeing click bait about the A99II, RX2 and A6000 replacement. And this site called the FS5 the FS1 with the A7s sensor. I don’t think the admin’s sources are tapped into product development anymore. This is a great site for Sony news and reviews, but anything regarding new cameras and lenses (new Otus and Loxia when we got Milvus) is consistently wrong. At this point nobody knows when it’ll be released.
So true. Sony may release A6000 next week and SAR will not know it until day before the release or as it happened with the A7s and A7s2 few hours after the release.
One thing we know Sony will release cameras for the forseable future.
If you guys can’t deal with the simple concept and meaning of the word “rumor” I think you are all free to never come back here again and nobody will care.
Actually people will be happier by not having to read people whining about their frustration and inability to deal with their teenager anxiety and expectation over the essence of what rumor is, because you know, by definition rumors are never 100%, which should be obvious but apparently it’s not.
The biggest irony of that is that despite whining everytime when there is a setback about something they want, in another words, about their struggle with what rumors stand for, these people keep coming back, they call it click bait and nonetheless, here they are clicking it again, commenting again, replying comments and giving the site more and more views.
Let’s be mad at the rumor webpage because they are the ones that made us anxious and they are the ones that created some unwanted expectation, we are teenagers, we can’t deal with it, that’s too much for us, too much!
I really don’t care…
ad block in chrome extension works fantastic for this site …
You’re right! I disabled mine just for a minute just to see how it looks with all the ads. Ads are flashing left & right!
Unfortunately I’m usually reading (or trying to read) this site on a Surface RT and I have no ad blocker. It’s a nightmare and takes forever to load.
Amazing and Amazing 🙂 so at least we know there is no A7000 – as the NEX7 has some issues but a nice sensor folks including me have been waiting for a replacement for years and years now 🙂 yes I have the A6000 and it fixed many of the issues with the NEX7 – but still could need a good upgrade – but as i do not enjoy using the A6000 all that much I have put lots of money into M43 – with lots of super nice lenses and now nice bodies like the EM1 and GH4 and the G7 and GX7 and EM5 m2 and GX8 – although I enjoy the GX8 the best –
So eventually I guess the 6100 I guess it will be called will be released next year – but the lack of lenses for APS-C E mount just casts a shadow on that system –
+1
Same for me, went from Sony E to m43 because of the lenses, was waiting for a worthy NEX7 successor for years and now that Sony has stopped the development of APS-C lenses and postponed the A6xxx release, I will probably just stick with m43 for good…
The bodies are better and I certainly like the feature set and execution more.
I so agree – I suspect the A6100 will be the last APS-C from Sony – and why get it while there will be no more lenses for APS-C E-mount – I assume Sony will be using the 1 inch sensor for beginners and entry level users cameras and then it will just be A7x FF bodies – I guess they do not want to compete anymore with Fuji and now Canon as they are promising to improve their EOS-M system
What about A7 III????
It’s on the same line on the screen shot
+1
exactly what I miss most in the Sony APS-C lens line-up
Agreed, I would love a decent walk around zoom. Just can’t bring myself to part with that much cash for the 1670 given all the lack luster reviews. Will just keep my fingers crossed (and also get tempted by Fuji…)
The only weird thing on the image is that how they’ll announce another flagship Xperia if the Z5 Premium with 4K display was just announced.
Nervermind, I wasn’t paying attention to the image.
When (if??) the α6xxx is announced
Just like i said Sony managers are just lazy a$$.
Delaying will not make the A6xxx successor better if it s sold $650-700. Nex 7 costed the twice, so if we want good high end APS-C camera, we have to buy it $1100 and more, to get IBIS, leveling gauge( very important), BSI, 4k(?) , weather sealing and greater EVF and LCD screen
Just wanna say to Sony managers to take their A7RII or A7SII with 70-4000 on and impale themself on it till ….
Is it just more refined than telling them straight f* off!!! ?
Hey Sony, most APS-C users won’t buy ur new 3000$ FE camera and will wait for big big bargain to get one at half prize if they did not jump to other manufacturers before. You might be very silly to expect to boost ur sales. You just give more opportunity to Canikon to release their MILC camera…. I think some of you did not follow the right courses of marketing strategy 😉
As much as I understand your rant, it won’t change anything.
Sony’s best selling camera might be the A6000, but I’m pretty sure it’s not their most profitable. The average A6000 customer is not an enthusiast like many of us. Sony will only loose these customers if a serious competitor is in sight, which is not the case. There are alternatives like m43 but nor real competition in APS-C land.
I guess the second generation A7 lineup with skyrocketed prices, is much more profitable than the first generation or the A6000. And the average A7 customer is an enthusiast, who spend much more, but are much harder to please.
What would you do?
make an a7000. Not a a6000 replacement, but a step up. compete with the 7d and such.
“There are alternatives like m43 but nor real competition in APS-C land.”
m43 with f/2.8 (weathersealed PRO zooms) and IBIS beats APS-C with f/4 G and so-called “Zeiss” shitless. APS-C sensors would need 1600+ scores on DxOMark high ISO to come close to m43 with a stop faster lens, but they really only have 1100-1200. Pana 15/1.7 vs Sony 20/2.8… Oly 12/2 vs Sony 16/2.8 piece of shit… it is not even funny.
as i m french, i will rant again and wait for the second generation A7 lineup bargain in a few years 😀
it’s from 2015 not 16…
no
i dont see how the aps-c mount is dead. Just wait. The a6100 will be pretty good.
You have to remember where you are… “Dead”, by definition is, “I have no more patience to wait for something new to satisfy my own wants.” Sony being “lazy” and/or “screwing their customer base” … translation : “Sony didn’t give me at least an announcement that confirmed precisely everything I demanded plus a few extra bonuses with regards to their next camera in the lineup right this very second.”
I am not going to buy the A7RII for $3200 anyway.
You got that right. But thanks to all the guys who posted that they were “thinking about moving up to FF”, you’ve convinced Sony marketing that we’re easy meat.
FE as full frame doesn’t make any sense at the moment.
They only have f/4 lenses, and you can achieve same results with APS-C and f/2.8 lenses. It’s f/2.8 on FF that makes a difference (zooms, of course).
Not like Sony’s APS-C has f/2.8 lenses either – unlike Fuji and even Samsung.
I guess the E-Mount system is just pointless all around.
pointless if you only use zooms*
Exactly. Same reason I left Sony to go back to Nikon. No fast zooms.
Also, my friend just got an A7rII. Compared to my D750, it’s just a bit smaller, but I can’t tell any difference in weight. I would imagine the other IIs are similar in weight, as well. At least my A6000 was a pint-sized featherweight compared to my D7100. The whole point of mirrorless is improved size and weight, and it seems Sony has lost sight of that.
Well obviously my purchase of the Sony 50mm APS-C lens 2 weeks ago was a mistake – there is no APS-C future. When a company pushes a product this far back, it’s only because they don’t want to admit it’s never coming. Yes, the a6000 works great, but it’s clearly a dead end so I’m not spending any more money on lenses. Sad that Rokinon just released 2 yesterday.
I don’t know yet where to go from here. The A7rII is way, way too pricey and I don’t want FF anyway, I hate the size and weight.
Sony, you’ve made a huge mistake. Hey maybe you want to hire VW’s CEO, I hear he might be available.
Not that there’s no future, they’re just waiting for a competitor to give them a reason to release something new and (it better be at this point) way better. Olympus is going to be a while (unless they aren’t!) until they release another update, and there’s really nothing else that even comes close.
Yes, and note that “waiting for a competitor to release something new and better” is how Microsoft let Apple (and Android) totally eat their lunch in the consumer market over a 10 year period. Today they have 3% of the mobile market, after years of betting the farm on big desktop systems (the computer equivalent of FF). Tech pundits talk about Ballmer’s “lost decade”.
…and it was 100% a decision on the business side. They have some of the best UX designers and engineers in existence.
And they always have. They became addicted to the revenue streams of Windows and Office and focused on new licensing schemes instead of innovative products. You can herd your customer base into a corral but you can’t keep them there forever. That’s a delusion that has led many companies to failure.
“When a company pushes a product this far back, it’s only because they don’t want to admit it’s never coming” that’s ridiculous comment.
17:43: Canon makes the worst kit lens ever! “_(“/)_/”
BTW: 18-55 is okay, but a little bit too big for making the camera pocketable.
Anyone up to take this bet on: new apsc 6xxx or 7xxx before a new a mount camera? My heart is breaking more and more every day that sony doesnt announce any a mount news. I went back to shooting an a580 just to get rid of that dumb dumb slt crap. Maybe its time to try m43 for my hiking photography(yes i hike with dslr gear). Im cheap, if apsc E mount came out with a sharp wide lens thats reasonably priced i would have jumped in. Im really digging cannons mirrorless wide zoom lens. Heres hoping for another fire sale for a canon m2 for dirt dirt cheap, unless theres a m43 and wide zoom combo(in my steamy dreams) that comes up for cheap during the holidays. One can only hope.
what about A mount cameras??
This is not good, and yet we still do not know if the a7000 (or a6xxx) will show up next year at all. Sony is leaving their APS-C customer on their own; Sony has started to leave the crop market.
I think Sony’s behavior is extremely damaging for the company, because investing in a camera and lenses is a big investment for a customer. Potential customers and suppliers notice that the Sony has put the APS-C development on hold. I have talked to many Canon and Nikon owners and my impression is that they are not so concerned about mirrorless full frame, the only think they care about is the image quality and that the company can guarantee a long time lasting product line with continuous new cameras and lenses.
Sony cannot guarantee this!!!
Sony is now doing the same mistake as Nokia did, with Symbian.
As for my part, they can take the thing and stick it up their you know what. I got a NEX-6 which does not give me AF for my A-Mount lenses (who needs it, anyway) but superb image quality. I will stick with this camera until I make the move to FF.
A6000 + Rokinon 12mm? There’s also the 16mm prime pancake which is great for hiking, and it is usually acceptably sharp when stopped down.
I’ve looked at M43 for hiking too, but the small sensor makes going very wide very hard. The system has also traditionally lacked wide angle stuff, they’ve filled that gap but the newer lenses are expensive.
Yeah more and more tempted by Fuji every day. They release bodies I can see myself being happy with for years, which somehow Sony doesn’t manage. Even with a 16mp sensor an XT1 is very tempting, such good built, lenses, JPEG output..
I own an X-T1 as well as a NEX-7, and in side by side comparisons using sharp primes, I can’t see any resolution advantages for the NEX. Pixels are only part of the equation. I previously owned a 5d Mk ii and a D800, so I know what image detail looks like. Only the D800 stood out amongst these four. Sony has some amazing tech but it doesn’t come together as a whole the way it should, IMO, which is why I shoot Fuji. To each his/her own. I’m rooting for Sony though. Love the innovation.
I don’t think is a big deal. Most camera makers make small iterations year after year. I’d rather we had major changes and a greater time frame for new iterations, then yearly changes that make little difference. There’s no point trying to compete with Nikon and Canon, better to have a smaller camera, that is different, that beats them on price and functionality. Fuji have a put a lot of effort into making a comprehensive lens set. Sony less so.
Sony is just milking the A6000 cash cow and wants to sell the A7 series as priority but they will loose some buyers now: but they have oly and pana in their pocket waiting for their handed down sensors and Nikon and Canon are just run by old men. A7000 will come when A6000 sales fall off, but where is the competition for that?
The A6000 is still good in its class, although its a fast moving field. No where Sony really sucks is entry DSLR’s. The A58 does not stack up against entry level Nikon or Canons. This is an important area since once you have them, you can keep them for life. The A6000 is not entry level, and the A5000 lack of viewfinder means it is in a different category.
Then it is interesting. Nobody cares about it right now
