ohhh, yessss! and what about the specifics?
42MP!
42 megapixel A7RII? so it is a totaly new sensor?
Sure sounds like it, and I can’t wait to see how it performs.
Holy boatload of cameras!
Don’t be a tease – pls. share the details 🙂
I want I want I want to the first one who writes in a thread
A mount is dead
PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS
42MP Full-Frame Exmor R BSI CMOS Sensor
Holy crap $1000 for a compact camera? RX100 m4
Rx10 4k plus 960fps (probably not 4k)
nohhh, they deleted this info below the A7RII pages on BH….
there is no “42MP Full-Frame Exmor R BSI CMOS Sensor already” there….
brrrrrrr!
BSI SENSOR! HOLY SHIT!
it is not only good for low light, it is also good for wide angle lenses .

$3,198 – does anybody remeber the inital price tag of A7R ?
$2299
Ufff – than it’s more than just a successor – looks more like a bigger brother
This camera IS HUGE! Check the details.
LOL
I was hoping it is Little
> the focal plane phase-detection AF system on the a7R II works well with Sony A-mount lenses when they are mounted on the camera using an LA-EA3
wasn’t that an issue with LA-EA1/3 adapted lenses on A6000 ?
Yes, this is a first and what everyone has asked for!
ooooh…. Proper AF with A-Mount???? Now that is interesting!
$3200 for R II… Wonder if other differences other than sensor (and body mods from A7 II)…
Hybrid AF, internal 4K

Um A mount lens focusing?!
I think i’ll come back in an hour. News are coming in slowly. Wonder what Rx100 IV has
A $1000 price tag.
I mean spec-wise. Although it’s not like i’m going to buy a P&S for 1k…
This is everything we could ask for really. BSI
Great! Value drop for my rx100m3 🙁
damn.. this plus the batis.. bye bye!!
Where is the A7000? Where is the RX2? >:(
Who cares. 🙂
People who dont have 3000$ to spare? All the semi-professionals and hobbyists basically.
399 AF points!
New EVF biggest ever
omg… a7r ii is so expensive…
i had a feeling before i clicked the link it was going to be 3k..
Have you actually read about it, it’s EVERYTHING people have asked for!
i aint whining. just sayin damn its going to hurt.
where is the complete list of specs aside from the few things listed on the b&h site? is bsi as effective or moreso than what the a7s can do in lowlight? is the shutter silent like people are shouting out on here? i cant tell whats real and whats from wishlists.
Those things are all actual specs, check DPR
New shutter! 500,000 life cycles!
This camera IS the A9
AF A-Mount with EA3 and Ea1 using on sensor PDAF
Impressive specs so far. Hopefully news of the “a7000” comes out soon. I’m really hoping this comes out and ships before our baby comes out.
Focuses A mount lenses through adaptor…
Unbelievable!!!
And Sony’s press release for RX 100 M4, and RX 10 M2
http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/sonys-rx100-iv-and-rx10-ii-cameras-bring-professional-imaging-experience-to-acclaimed-cyber-shot-rx-series-300097176.html
a-mount is dead, aps-c is dead
I expect full storm of comments coming
If that works even half as well as the E-mount on-sensor PDAF of the A6000, A-mount bodies are dead – this thing is effectively a dual-mount body.
Specifically, a quote from the article:
“Additionally, the focal plane phase-detection AF system on the a7R II
works well with Sony A-mount lenses when they are mounted on the camera
using an LA-EA3 or LA-EA1 mount adapter. This allows users to enjoy the
wide AF coverage of 399 focal plane phase-detection AF points,
high-speed response and high tracking performance with a wider range of
lenses. This marks the first time that the AF system of a mirrorless
camera can achieve high performance with lenses originally designed for
DSLRs.”
This is freaking HUGE.
What, no curved sensor? Barry will be so disappointed.
The really interesting news is not that it has IBIS (predictable), but that it’s BSI. For a 46MP sensor that starts to make real sense. BSI is more important on small photosites, but we might well see it migrate to all Sony sensors in time. They have invested more money on the necessary fabs.
The biggest problem is surely the lack of EFCS unless that’s just been left out of the headlines.
*** edit ***
Reading a bit more, the 3.5x increase in sensor read speed is simply enormous. I now see it has a silent shutter mode, and that would make sense as that would put the full sensor readout time about the same as the A7S. If so, that’s enormous.
(And, if it can do that, surely EFCS must be in there).
So, reading the press release, this is much more important on the sensor side than I thought from the bullet points.
Hmm, if I’m not mistaken the rII will have silent shutter, isn’t that even better?
I’ve done an update. Silent shutter is fine, but it will (like the A7S) not work well with moving subjects due to rolling shutter effects. Really it needs EFCS as well for moving subjects. I suspect it’s there, but not in the press release.
It’s on the Sony Page that it does have EFCS.
Also highly interesting: This offers on-sensor PDAF capability for A-mount glass with the LA-EA3 according to the press release.
If it works as well as Sony claims, SLT is dead.
Would BSI help with wide RF lenses?
what is EFCS? Thanks…
Electronic First Curtain Shutter
Electronic First Curtain Shutter.
The exposure interval is started electronically and finished by the mechanical shutter. This allows for faster shutter start response time, and for less mechanical vibration during exposure.
Hmm, the 4K no line skipping is interesting, I wonder does it mean it capture the whole whopping <42mp and then compress it in camera, if that so then that will be one sharp 4K, it's like some cine cams record at 6K but outputs at 4K which introduces some real nice result.
If it has a full readout. It will be more like 8k downconverted to 4k.
8000×5300 is 42 mpix in 3:2. Crop it to 16:9 and you get 8000×4500.
Thanks for the math but wow, if 8K to 4K that’s a lot of compression that the internal processing need to do, that’s some serious chip to be found in the new cam
If true, the quality difference in 4k, when comparing to dedicated 4k cams, is going to be substantial. I remember last time I saw 1080P difference from a dedicated camera and a 4k camera. That was something….
Well, well, well – Sony actually listened! BSI, 5-axis, Internal 4K….wow! I hope that silent shutter is included, can’t see it not being the case.
42Mp means that crop mode delivers 18Mp and you really don’t need APS-C camera anymore….! Hence the horrific price.
Two cams in one!
You just can’t mount 2 different lenses at the same time^^
From what I’ve read it does have silent shutter. And yes, it’s expensive but it looks to have all the feature people wanted and now it doubles as a high res monster and should give amazing video (no line skipping), I wonder what does this mean for the A7sII? Low light sensitivity and that’s all?
Not to mention on sensor AF for A-Mount lenses, 4K, yes silent shutter and EFCS, plus shutter is quieter and less vibration
included
A7rii…$3199..
42mp bsi sensor
A group of recent Sony patents appeared specifically for BSI with
Rolling shutter that can take multiple simultaneous exposures
Reflective layer behind pixels with 4 sones and increasing sensitivity
New type of wiring
New type of microlens.
I cant help wondering if this sensor will allow a handheld high res multiple exposure mode by taking 4 multiple exposures simultaneously? Just speculating, and we will know shortly.
I have been saying for a long time that Sony needs to go to BSI for its ff, especially since Samsung went to bsi for its apsc.
hey can you explain what is BSI exactly 🙂
Backside ilumination places the electronics behind the sensor and the absorption layerer closest to the microlenses.
This reduced distance means shorter focal length microlenses.
That means highher iso, and the ability to make smaller pixels and higher resolution sensors.
For example…if the latest small bsi sensors were scaled to ff the could be make 100-200mp easily.
There is little advantave to bsi for large pixels but a big advantage with smaller pixels and higher resolution sensors.
I don’t know why they ever called it “back-side illumination”. If you define a convention that the “front” is the direction the light comes from, they should have called it “back-side wiring” instead. Once the wiring is on the back, all kinds of other circuitry can go back there, too. With this new stacked sensor, the DRAM is “behind” the sensor, but since the sensor is called BSI, that means the DRAM is on the front. Confusing naming convention.
“Rolling shutter that can take multiple simultaneous exposures” — where did you read that? That would basically mean one could do single shot high dynamic range images and that one in this mode would go well beyond 14 stops of DR.
Stacked sensor on RX10II means Foveon-type sensor instead of Bayer type?
BSI
(Bayer type)
All I read of foveon sensor tech, last time I prefer Bayer type. Foveon has big trouble at high ISO because the upper layers consume too much of the light for the lowest layer!
BSI is clearly indicated in A7RII specs, but in RX10II its Stacked (???). I read now that also new RX100 uses the same very interesting speedy sensor w DRAM and signal electronics integrated.
From looking at the press release, it sounds like it’s something closer to stacked circuitry, specifically it sounds like the sensor is stacked right on top of the readout DRAM.
Kind of similar to the package-on-package RAM-on-top-of-CPU you find in most cell phones these days.
Shiiiiiiit, specs are insane, but the price is equivalent..
Sony just destroyed Canon. Who needs 5dMarkIV. New King: A7rii
just what I was thinking. for that matter, who needs medium format if that 42(!!) mp sensor is any good…
Professionals!
I know one that does model-shotouts in a studio. And she uses a bigger housing for her 5D, so the models are more impressed and the smiling is better
Whatever it takes, LOL.
medium format isn’t just about megapixels, it’s about depth. I would much rather have a 24mp medium format over a 35mm 42mp.
Get a cup of tea and wait – we will see
In movie category yes, but not in stills AF category. On-sensor PDAF is probably not there yet.
With this new sensor the A7rII will produce sharper, more dynamic stills than any Canon. You can count on that, the DSLR’s may still have a slight advantage for sports photography which is a niche they currently own. For everything else the A7rII will be king, stills and video.
Or 5DS 🙂
3200$. crazy. camera should not cost more than the first a7r.
It’s a better camera in every way, and it costs more. The A7r is still available at a discounted price. Go for it.
I have it. need the new one 🙂
It is expensive, but I’m sure the price will drop in time. The A7r is still a mighty good camera.
Can’t be serious? This is the A9
I doubt that this is the A9. First, a 40% AF improvement over the A7 is good, but it doesn’t provide competition for the 1DMKIII. Second, a professional camera will have to have a similar form factor to present professional cameras in order attract the professional. Also, if there is an A9 in the works, you can expect a higher price tag. Lastly, we are missing dual card slots, etc and remember that the naming structure indicates that this is a prosumer camera. Just my opinion… of course.
“Second, a professional camera will have to have a similar form factor to present professional cameras in order attract the professional.”
Whether or not you are a professional, if you are, that sentences represents the opinion of only one and is by no means a fact. I know many professionals that would disagree with you.
Did you read my post through to the end?
“Just my opinion… of course.”
and no I’m not a professional. I did put myself through eight years of school with my cameras, but that was in the film days. My last camera that I would say was of a professional grade was the 1DMKIII. I hope to see an A9 that meets my expectations and not your friend’s expectations. We will see.
It’s worth what people are prepared to pay for it, have you not learnt any economics?
But did they get rid of the micro-hdmi output?
So do screw drive lenses get any love through EA4 with on sensor AF?
Makes me wonder in LA-EA5 is in the pipeline, with only a screw drive motor built in.
Edit: Or EA3 mk II
I believe that not. SLT focusing algorithms are totally different and old lenses are still driven by quite old SLT adapters.
Shouldn’t make as much difference as you might think. But those adapter don’t drive screw lenses.
No – it is possible
Has nothing to do with algorithm differences between SLT and OSPDAF. The adapter should just feel like any other native FE lens. And this adapter should be able to turn the screw step- and noiseless.
I only wonder if there is a market for a product like this. Most A-mount lenses that are considered “worth” to be adapted may already have a built in motor.
There are still some pretty nice screw driven lenses for A-Mount:
50F1.4 non Zeiss
35F1.4
85F1.4
135F1.8
100F2.8 Makro
Yea… I was thinking about my old A-mount collection. This camera still wouldn’t work with my favorites — the Minolta 200/2.8 and 100/2.8 macro. I assume it would have worked with my 28-75/2.8 and 85/2.8 SAM lenses, as well as my Tamron 70-300 usd.
Tamron 70-200 f2.8 Macro: $769 / 514€
Lens is not stabilized, but with IBIS… who cares :))
Apart from the ones others are mentioning, 20/2.8, 135 STF, 200/300 f/2.8, 300/600 f/4, 400/4.5, 100/2, 100 macro, 100 soft. 500 reflex. There are lots and lots of lenses worth adapting.
Tamron 70-200 f2.8 Macro: $769 / 520€
No need an a-mount camera to get the most out of those lenses.. Watch for the A99II to have either no SLT or maybe one that can be lifted as needed depending on how close the sensor PD is in low light and real action.
This means a mirror less A – mount is coming soon. A99 mark ii the game changer
Thank you! that was the most exciting news of the week!
BSI sensor in A7S mark ii with a head splitting 4 million ISO. And all the goodies of A7R II.
oh yissss
Does anyone remember that I have been pushing for ff bsi for a very very very long time now, and that I have been subjected to years of negative critisizm for continuing to push for it?
Not to mention years of pushing for IBIS ever since Nex first came out
Not to mention much much much longer pushing for higher resolution
Just wondering if anyone other than Sony was paying attention
Fortunately Sony payed attention.
Sony…if you are paying attention now…the next important upgrades…
Full high speed autofocus compatability with A mount and Canikon lenses
Higher resolution…not easily accomplished with BSI sensors
A moderately priced supertele lens such as
300-600 f 5.6, or 300-800 f6.3 for about $3000-$3500
Yes, it is all about you.
It’s not up to Sony when it comes to AF speed for other manufacturer’s lenses, that makes no sense.
Plus, BSI sensor are actually only effective with high-resolution but you want even higher than 40-50MP?
TOTALLY WRONG!!!!!!!!!!
This camera uses LAEA3 for A mount lenses…electronically comapatable with dslt and dslr lenses including Canikon
High spedd AF adapters will be available soon for Canikon, whether made by Sony or someone else.
“other manufacturer’s lenses”
Isn’t the SONY adapter an adapter made BY SONY for SONY lenses? So clearly I wasn’t talking about that since it doesn’t fit “other manufacturer’s lenses”.
And if an adapter is made by a 3rd party, for Canikon’s lenses, for instance, it’s not up to Sony, it’s up to the manufacturer of the adapter to find a way to use the camera’s AF in their favor with their adapter, I never talked about availability.
What a pitiful person you are, not being able to properly interpret a simple text and coming with CAPS to say it was right. LOL.
Let me copy you so you don’t feel so bad about yourself.
LEARN HOW TO READ!!!!!!!!
I have to admit you were right about the BSI, considering all the things you threw at the wall there is always a chance of something sticking.
BSI was a logical step in a high resolution sensor. Makes no sense for something like a 12 mpix sensor, but a high density sensor can always benefit from BSI configuration.
Even 12 mp sensors will get BSI
Even if it makes no sense in terms of IQ
In the long term it is cheaper to enhance the technique of just one single sensor type.
The 4 top repeated posting by me since I have posted on SAR
Higher resolution
IBIS
BSI
Full high speed AF compatability with A moun and Canikon…no mirror
Use LAEA3 now, Canikon adapters will come.
Those are the 4 things I have been consistantly pushing for for years…all of which are finally on this camera.
Where do you see full AF compatibility? You said 50+ mp and like layers and stuff, and of course IBIS was going to come.
I still don’t see why you would want more resolution. That’s the worst thing about the camera to me.
So, regardless of whether you are right or wrong, will you now be satisfied and forever STFU?
I’ll be surprised if the BSI does anything much for dynamic range. I suspect that it’s real purpose is to keep from having to use offset microlenses in order to get corners right.
102,400 iso on a 42mp sensor.
Do you think Sony could come near that without BSI
I expect a dynamic range improvement over the a7r, but even with comparable range thats a huge jump in performance.
Shorter focal length of microlenses increase the light gathering ability of the pixels. Similar to using a 50mm vs 1000 mm lens with the same size front element and diaphram.
Obviosly the shoter lens will be much faster
The question is….will you be buying this camera?
I believe I already answered that question several times.
Looks like there is a new Alpha flagship camera.
Oh damn, Sony if this lives up to the specs . . . then just WOW
RX100M4 specs?
New 1″ sensor with faster read out (still 20MP); 4K video, 40x slow motion appear to be the highlights. Also a new EVF. Oh, and suggested price of US$1000
All in all this leaves me cold. Best thing of this announcement is that the MK3 will drop in price.
Yes, I thought maybe this time we will get a large sensor as in the rumors.
I will get me a refurbish MK3.
960fps! 4k video! First stacked sensor! On-sensor memory!
If it leaves you cold, check your pulse because you’re dead.
http://goo.gl/sK0mBf
Or it means that it is never coming. Can read those tea leaves either way.
Nope.. Sony has already talked about the value of larger bodies and the a-mount lenses especially the longer ones will also want a larger body. When e-mount came out the adapters were the life-line for system with no native lenses. Now Sony can sell you a 70-200 f2.8 and an A77/A99 level camera plus a native 70-200 f4 and a smaller body depending on you needs. Like buying the theatrical and then the directors cuts of movies…
Maybe A9 comes out with e-mount and LAE-6.. Basically the professionel e-mount and A99ii in one.. I don’t see the A-mount lenses vanishing soon. It will be a very long time if ever that Sony will replace the biggest lenses, some of which have just been updated. There is no need to do an e-mount version anytime soon, and therefore a-mount (lenses) will have a much longer shelf life than expected.
And who cares about the mount on the camera, the cameras come and go. You might care about a big camera and SLT, two card slots yadda yadda.. if Sony is smart they keep offering something for the professionals as well (and keep the SLT somewhere for a while – and you can clip them up if wanted).
I’m so happy about internal 4K . I hope we can do 1080p – 120fps.
720p 120fps
nope only 720p – 120 fps on the A7RII
This is pretty much everything everyone asked for. I hope they let LA-EA2&4 use those AF points too!
They can’t.. the LEA2 and LEAD 4 have the SLT and the PD sensors using reflected light.. So we still need an a-mount to run ALL the lenses well even with the new sensor.
I’ll gladly smash that mirror.
I hate to be the bearer of “A mount is dead news” — But this is HUGE according to the press release. The new “SSM2” lenses? My theory was it was so they would work better on E-mount… I think I was right:
Additionally, the focal plane phase-detection AF system on the α7R II works well with Sony A-mount lenses when they are mounted on the camera using an LA-EA3 or LA-EA1 mount adapter. This allows users to enjoy the wide AF coverage of 399 focal plane phase-detection AF points, high-speed response and high tracking performance with a wider range of lenses. This marks the first time that the AF system of a mirrorless camera can achieve high performance with lenses originally designed for DSLRs.
Leave it to Adam (Negative Nancy) Brown to find something bad with this announcement.
I don’t know about “A-Mount is dead”, which might not be far off, but this sure talks about death of semitransparent mirror, if A7r is indeed capable of DSLR class AF, which is yet to be seen.
It could be all marketing talk, on top of good specifications
Yes… and if that’s true…. If you don’t need the SLT mirror anymore… then what exactly is the point of 2 different lines?
Getting to the point where you are talking about identical cameras, except for a different native flange distance.
The only thing i can think of is larger bodies with native mounts. Not much else.
Not that much larger. And — like the A3000 or NX1 — you can always take a mirrorless camera and stick it into a larger dslr-styled body.
That’s a question of a style and ergonomic difference, not a technological difference.
Oh sure, you definitely can have a larger mirrorless, i’m not saying that you can’t.
All I’m saying is that it maybe a way to differentiate. Native mount is always better than through adapter, regardless of body size. Microscopic adapter wobble translates into significant focus decentering.
A99 is much much larger than A7II… Don’t know where you got the idea that they are not that much different in size.
Edit: here is the size comparison to A7. A7II models just have a larger grip
http://www.cinema5d.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/a7_size.jpg
In weight, about a 20-30% difference. Not massive in my book. (A massive difference would be 5diii vs RX100).
There are other designs you should consider — Imagined a dSLR styled body with the sensor and native E-mount recessed into the camera. So when it has the LAEA1/3/5 adapter, the adapter basically fits within the camera, making it A99 size/weight.
Getting to the point where the IQ and performance differences between using adapter and native are really negligible. Does the marketplace really demand two different mounts, because of teeny tiny performance differences with adapters?
The A7ii is 600 grams…
812g – 600g = 212g / 812g = 26% difference in weight. Not that different.
Now attach a 35/1.4 lens to each camera… and the differences become truly negligible in proportion, in weight, and in bulk.
Just to continue this thought:
A7ii with FE 35/1.4 = 1229 grams.
A99 with SAL 35/1.4 = 1322 grams.
Total difference: The A7ii weighs 7% less. And I suspect the A7rii weighs more than the A7ii.
You won’t need the SLT mirror or any mirror, including DSLR mirrors. This may signal the end of the DSLR. Sell your Nikon now before it’s worthless. This “bad news” you speak of extends to both Canon and Nikon.
Eventually, we won’t need any mirrors. dSLRs will die. Though, when that times comes, I suspect Canon and Nikon will make mirrorless cameras that preserve their old mount system.
By that time, they will be so far behind technologically no one will want their dated products. And by mounting the old lenses they will loose much of the size advantage, it’s a recipe for disaster.
Professionals aren’t that concerned about the ‘size advantage’ you speak of, and recent FE lens releases have shown that advantage diminishes with fast glass, and even becomes a hinderance with large telephoto lenses.
Canon and Nikon will produce mirrorless cameras with EVF’s at some point, and they’ll keep their existing mounts, and people (pro or not) will keep buying them. Sony may carve a bigger slice of the pie for themselves (and I hope the do), but anyone who thinks Canon or Nikon are going away any time soon is crazy.
It’s really quite Ironic, because the other day I read an article that Canon is now developing a Semi transparent mirror system for their next DSLR’s.
did i miss something about the difference of LA-EA3 and LA-EA4? why only mention LA-EA3 instead of LA-EA4? so mean LA-EA4 will not coverage of 399 focal plane phase-detection AF points? So LA-EA3 give more coverage of AF points even on other camera like a7s?
The LA-EA4 just ignores the Cameras AF points, because it has it’s own AF-module built in.
oh shit! mean only LA-EA3 give exactly same AF points coverage(wider) with the camera AF points coverage rather than LA-EA4 only limit/cramp at middle? or both of the adapter still giving same coverage area, which is limited on middle. if yes than how stupid am i, never know the focus coverage area is not the same between this 2 adapter
The point is you no longer need the LA-EA4! The LA-EA4 was a compromise solution — it added a SLT mirror, blocking 1/2 stop of light. Now, with the LA-EA3, you can get fully functional fast autofocus, without a SLR mirror blocking light.
1/3 stop:
It’s 20% loss of light for every lens.
Or win of 25% light, not having the mirror.
And the LA-EA4 looks ugly!
And you have to be very carefully adapting it – the mirror is not protected well.
SLT loses you 30% of the light, which is approx. half a stop. In fact I think it’s closer to 0.6 stops.
I remember a third stop – but my source might be wrong
A half stop is like mulitplying f-number with 1.2
Can you explain this to “DW”/”A Photographer”?
He claims SLT loses 1.5-2% of light, assuming it’s just third stop!
Definitely half a stop…
From dpreview: “The mirror in the A55 is semi-transparent. According to Sony, it allows approximately 70% of the light that strikes it straight through to the 16.2MP CMOS imaging sensor. The remaining proportion is reflected upwards to a large 15-point phase detection AF array. This equates to a roughly 1/2 EV reduction in light transmission for live view/image capture but means the AF sensor is always receiving light.”
Aperture or f-number isn’t really relevant – you operate at exactly the same aperture as a traditional DSLR, but the sensor gain is boosted to compensate for the loss of light. You basically get slightly worse ISO performance as a consequence.
Who is DW / A Photographer? 1.5-2% is definitely not right!
You still need LA-EA4 for the AF motor to drive screw-based AF lenses… Like the legacy Minolta Alpha AF lenses
Waiting for my A99II with 42mp BSI!! (it might negate the loss of light from the SLT) 😀
I would say it’s gonna be better than that. 60MP to keep the title of a pro lineup
What you may have is the end of SLT IF the AF performance matches the classic PD.sensors BUT based on my A6000 to A77m2 — a year ago.. it really wasn’t there. One has to wonder if the rumored and aborted A-mount announcement was because they decided to slide the camera for the new sensor which wasn’t ready vs lose money of have an other 2.5 years of SLT..
The a-mount lenses are sill size wise better suited for larger body. Adapters add compatibility issues, like I can’t use a LEA1 and a 16-50 F2.8 with AF. I have both an A6000 and an A77m2.. Very different beasts more than a realized until I got he A6000. Stuff they could have there that they left off of the A6000.. making the A77m2 clearly the Flagship APS camera for Sony.
IF you removed the mirror and the extra PD sensor array you can do cameras with less cost. So they could do a-mount A59 etc much lower cost than Canon or Nikon. using all this new technology. IT maybe that A-mount was waiting for this sensor too? I don’t expect more than 3 bodies in the a-mount line because it will be about handling and durability for times when that is needed. But this starts to really give Sony something that could even shake up the DSLR format market some.
I agree there is a market for larger bodies. But there is nothing that mandates E-mount bodies be smaller than A-mount bodies. Look at the A3000, or the Samsung NX1 which is the size of many dSLRs.
The differences are now mostly stylistic and ergonomic — not technological.
I’m not suggesting Sony even has made a definite decision about what they are going to do — But IF the 2 mounts are technologically practically identical… With similarly capable autofocus. Now, with A-mount SSM lenses getting full functionality on E-mount with a simple LA-EA3 adapter, so you can now actually say that the FE compatible lens library is superior to the A-mount compatible lens library… With higher image quality out of the SLT-less FE mounts… Will the market place really even support sufficient demand for 2 such similar mount systems? Particularly if Sony were to introduce a FE body with the ergonomics and style of a DSLR.
HEEEEYY – I was the first one, mentioning “A mount is dead” in this forum ! ! ! Scroll down
Agreed, I think the SSM2 lenses were updated to work better with the e-mount system, and they’re likely holding on to A-mount only as long as it takes them to fill out the E-mount range with equivalent lenses. Once the fast zooms and tele-primes come out; buh-bye, A-mount…
I would tend to guess that, too, though I still expect one more A-mount body update.
I was previously expecting it… now I’m doubting it. If they named this the A9, then I think any hope for an A99ii would be pointless. So there is still a glimmer of hope, but I think it’s only a glimmer at this point.
For $3300 though.. they should package this camera with the LA-EA adapter, and then proclaim that right out of the box — there are compatible professional 2.8 lenses.
I’m sure someone at Sony is tasked with trying to figure out the over/under on this. There’s enough A-mount users that one final all-in A-mount camera could probably generate enough sales to warrant it, and it would allow Sony to continue to claim that A-mount isn’t being abandoned.
Adapting lenses isn’t the right solution, IMHO. Look at the lens mount issues that arose with the original A7. Even with the redesigned mount I’m not sure that I want to hang big A-mount glass off the front being held by an adapter. Too much room for tolerance error and vibration, to likely to cause damage in sloppy handling.
Plus then there’s all those big f/2.8 lenses and telephotos. You basically aren’t gaining much with an A7 body size versus a well-conceived SLT body size. In a full kit, the size/weight gains of just a smaller body isn’t compelling in and of itself, again IMHO. The Nikon Df and D750 proved to me that I was right that the general full frame DSLR body could shrink in size/weight, and I believe there is more potential gain left.
I suspect that enough Sony A-mount users think along the lines I do and would rather have the mass of the larger body with some of those lenses.
Still, Sony can’t be all things to all people. It’s making decisions about pruning lines to be an efficient producer. There are compelling reasons for them to stop making the more complex bodies and just focus on the simpler ones they’ve now iterated. It’s the one place where they have excellent marketing visibility and sales that are growing, after all.
So it could go either way. I’m pretty sure that a new SLT has been developed. That makes the decision tilt slightly towards going ahead and putting it out. But I’d admire them if they were to say that were going to pull everything back to something like two HX, three RX, two Axxxx, and three A7 products.
Many years ago, the Sony brand was synonymous with “top quality leading edge tech.” To a large degree you can see them trying to resurrect that in cameras, though there are still a lot of warts to be dealt with.
Just a thought, could it be that Sony at some point in the future will offer a mount conversion for the big f/2.8 and long tele lenses (from A to E-mount)? In its simplest incarnation that could mean superglueing an adaptor to the lens.
You’d have to ask Roger Cicala at Lens Rentals that question, as I’ve not disassembled a Sony A-mount lens to see how those big boys are made. Maybe.
But I’m not sure Sony’s set up to do that kind of work. Aren’t they already farming out most of their repairs?
I agree that some finance person at Sony is calculating projected hypotheticals… How many existing A-mount users are there… What portion of those would continue to invest in the system (they don’t care about some A230 owner still shooting with the kit lens who has no system loyalty), what portion would be willing to switch to E-mount, and what portion would be lost to competitors. What are the costs associated with running another production of A-mount cameras, what are the indirect costs such as customer confusion about A-mount.
You are correct of course in the “disadvantages” of mirrorless and adapter.. But are those disadvantages truly very minor things that won’t matter to 99% of shooters, and will not be a basis on which to drive decisions. Anti-Sony fanboys often complain about Sony’s RAW compression for example, but this doesn’t matter to 99% of users, and Sony never saw a reason to answer this complaint. So some slight tolerance and vibration errors with adapters… is that enough to justify the production and maintenance of an entirely separate mount?
I think you’re also missing some of the advantages of mirrorless. Sure, 3-5 years ago, the main advantage of mirrorless was smaller body. A dSLR was better in almost every other way…. Mirrorless was compromise to get a smaller size.
But things have changed dramatically. In its review of the D7200, Dpreview was complaining about how it’s not as good as mirrorless in so many ways.
It really has little to do with size at this point, for some advanced models. The A7rii barely weighs less than the D750. And yes, Nikon should make a mirrorless-D750 — because it’s not just about size anymore.
Advantages of mirrorless:
— Vastly superior live view autofocus
— Superior Video AF
— Many advantages of EVF (and some disadvantages)
— Potentially superior autofocus to a dSLR system
— More accurate being on-sensor
— Better tracking, utilizing the full sensor readout
— Wider possible coverage of points, as seen in the A7rii
— No mirror means no mirror vibration
— Simpler mechanics = 500k shutter life span!
Thus, even if you took an A-mount body and stuck the E-mount on it… Or took a Nikon df/D750 but made it mirrorless, it would have many advantages, even without being any smaller.
my job requires training on various new items that we sell and in the training for sony they specifically mention the new lenses are intended to work with e-mount better and these training come direct from sony.
So on the A7R II I have read propaganda and they did a
pretty good job since now I really REALLY want one. I don’t so much care about
that resolution as to me 24mp is almost too much and consumes lots of hard
drive space. I don’t think I would be cropping that much or printing billboards
but hey ya never know 🙂
I don’t understand the “back-illuminated CMOS sensor” so I am looking for the
explanation on why that maters. Silent shutter sounds cool and the longer shutter
life. I chuckled a bit when I read “Sony’s extensive collection of FE lenses”
which I have most of them so it’s not that extensive. However I love that they
improved the A-Mount focusing and usage as I have quite a few of those. Now I
want to see all the pictures of it!! Dang B&H..
But in the end, my wife will never go for that price 🙁 so I will stick with
my A7II and A850…
She doesn’t have to know….. sssshhhh…
In a regular CMOS sensor.. The light sensing area has to share surface area with other circuits and the reduces the light collecting area. Microlenses try to focus all the light to area that is light sensitive, but its still not an optimal use of the sensor area. Back illuminated puts the circuits behind the light sensing area and the light path is less obstructed and I think it can even have larger area for holding more electrons etc.
a7II you can get 1300 for…a850 prolly 700. You’re only about 1200.00 away! That’s not that bad. Personally though, I’d never sell the A850.
The A850 will be with me till it dies.. Then I may try and fine another one. The LEA4 does not support my Sony TC’s
Just realized something. This camera will use those 399 PDAF points with Canon lenses too! Fast focus with EF lenses, anyone?
Maybe.. Its upto the adapter and how it interacts with the camera system.
Commlite behaves exactly the same as my LA-EA1 so I expect it to work with PDAF.
Sure you can get AF with canon lenses these days, but it will not be fast.
If metabones work that out there will be a mass canon exodus
What do you mean by ‘fast’; fast like in DSLR-fast or fast like in A6000 ‘fast’ ?
Faster than before, which was 3-5 seconds :).
HOLY SHIT!
That was a PUNCH IN MY FACE!
I had to re-read 2 times those specs!
WOW!!!
So, will the RX100 MKIV have the same 1″ 20MP or those wild rumors about a 4/3″ were actually true? I also wonder about the video specs of this camera as much as the lens spec, will it do 4K internally, how will it compare to the LX100?
960fps in what resolution?
1″ stacked sensor, same as RX10m2
It seems to be the same sensor of the RX10 MKII, apparently a new 20MP but still 1″.
RX100 MKIV only 5min in 4K video, same lens as the RX100 MKIII but I couldn’t find the resolution of the 960fps, which both cameras seems capable of.
According to the specs page (http://www.sony.net/Products/di/en-us/products/f5kd/specifications.html?contentsTop=1 ), it looks like it’ll be able to shoot 960 fps at 1080p!
yeah its mad…

The RX10 MKII will be a great second camera, that way you don’t need to carry a tele kit and you don’t need to look for a camera that does slowmo.
If the A7S II becomes able to shoot 4K internally, these two together would be quite a combo.
I wonder what will Panasonic do with the FZ1000 and a possible GH5, if the GH5 doens’t feat a IBIS like the new A7 cameras, and with an internal 4K, Panasonic will end up losing the edge they have.
There is also the new A6___, if done properly it could be a nice 4K camera. But Sony has being pushing hard for their new A7 cameras, I doubt they will make the A6000 as good it can and deserve to be, a true NEX-7 successor.
Next up- a99II.
not even SAR was prepared for this. Sony has kept their secrets very tight.
Good on SAR though, they said that it would be released in June and Sony delivered.
With how tight on the info Sony is, I’ll call that a half-win.
A7r II ships in august….. so released … no.
Now, who’s going to hack Sony.com and drop the price to $199 at launch time?
In the off chance that happens, I’m going to buy like 20 of them with next day shipping, haha.
“Like the a7R II, both the RX100 IV and RX10 II can shoot and record at 100 Mbps with 4K recordings and 50 Mbps with full HD recordings. The RX10 II is capable of recording 4K video for approximately 29 minutes and the smaller form factor RX100 IV can record 4K video for approximately 5 minutes in length. Both cameras support Picture Profile, S-Log2/S-Gamut and allow the user to capture 16.8 MP still images while recording 4K video by simply pressing the shutter button.”
excuse me? 5mins 4k on the baby RX100mk4 ?… i was waiting to buy three of these for multicam interviews, as the RX100 i have is perfect for these… 5mins is bananas!!!! common guys! that means staggered starts about 30seconds between cameras and me running about hitting record every five mins on three cameras… ughs! ok heat i get it, LX100 managed 15min and I rejected that camera for a few more reasons.. three rx10 sized bodies means no more over the shoulder kit baggie.. extra travel size not welcomed sony..!!!
overheating?
has to be the reason i think. cannot imagine any other reason can you ?
the downside of such pocketable camera, many of Sony’s cameras suffer from that because they do push it too hard for smaller cameras and that’s also one of the reasons why the A7II’s formfactor is bigger than its predecessor, they pushed it so it would be the “smallest FF camera” to make some marketing impact and then, they made it a bit more properly with the MKII.
Also, it’s hard to heatsink a sensor that’s moving. So that’s another problem. I’m very happy they put IBIS in, though…
Here is the new A7R II page with more pics and stuff: http://www.sony.net/Products/di/en-us/products/dkw5/index.html
This A7RII has incredible specs. Just an incredible Camera. Very expensive, but loaded with the latest features. Good job
Sony!!
Time to stock A – mount glass
Here it is….
https://alphauniverseclub.com/
looks like 4K is in Super 35mm crop only?
I have to say I really shocked by this, Sony pulled out all the stops for this one. I’m thankful to Panasonic and Samsung for pushing 4k across different lines, IMO that forced Sony’s hand.
In the end we all win. I’ll be preordering the RX100mkIV and waiting for used A7rII’s since I don’t really need 42mp and they’ll be $1000 less used at the end of the year.
there is not SO much upside from the MKIII to the MKIV though, unless 960fps is a must have for you, the IQ may be a bit better with this new tech but probably not so much that it’s worth paying more for the MKIV instead of the MKIII.
4k is major upside, as is 16fps and the faster readout – its going to be a much more responsive camera.
But recording 4K for just 5min is not so much of an upside, at least not in general, unless you specifically don’t need more than 5min per clip.
16fps shouldn’t last much with 20MP, so it’s only about short span burst and the previous fps was quite good. Faster readout is better for electronic shutter situations and less rolling shutter for video. But that’s quite specfic benefits, that’s why I called it “not so much upside” to be worth upgrading.
But yeah, if you have use for all these specifics things, it might worth it.
When is the last time you saw a 5 minute take in a film?
Any film?
Wow! hahahahahaha… That’s the best counter argument I have ever heard! If you can even call it a “counter argument”. LOL.
Poor fanboys doesn’t have any idea of how ridiculous they sound.
My point being, if you are attempting serious video work on a P&S (granted, the best P&S by a wide margin) you should be prepared for some compromises. Otherwise just buy a better camera FFS.
You are trying to make it right but it’s actually getting worse.
Let’s pretend that this is really what you were saying. Just pretend that lame comment that ended with this “any film?” mockery tone was actually deep down, very deeep down, something thoughtful and somehow what I said really called for such reply.
So explain to me how what you said after is so different from what I wrote?
“But recording 4K for just 5min is not so much of an upside, at least not
in general, unless you specifically don’t need more than 5min per clip.”
Mr. sensitive fanboy, FFS I wasn’t even bashing on the camera! My gosh you are so sensitive. I have no idea how my comment triggered such response – except for the fact that you are a fanboy, which always explain such things. FFS, stop it! Please? LOL.
have you ever shot an interview?
dude, i shoot talking head interviews with 3 cams,… some interviews they yap on for over 20mins on avg.. so yeah… for my use, talking head interviews.. yes 5mins is a PITA.. i love my rx100 as i can fit three on them into a shoulder bag along with my lav kits n zoom etc and rolling pelican 1510 with the lighting kit and nano stands etc.. means now i have to choose between running about like a monkey hitting record every five mins on each cam or upsizing to a backpack with 3 x RX10m2…
OR – does anyone know if you can control three cameras via the one phone app ? maybe sitting in the corner clicking a app to hit record on each camera as they punch up to the 5min mark might be a easy solution here?… anyone ?.. looks at desk straight in front of me.. i have ipad, 3gs and a iphone4 .. ideas
Sounds like you’ve already solved your own dilemma. Also – I knew as soon as I commented that you (or someone else) would have a scenario that would negate what I had just typed.
yeah typing got me thinking of a solution.. not ideal.. but might work.. if their app works on a ipad? anyone know for sure and what the min specs iphone you’d need? haha
If the 5 minute maximum is heat related (more than likely) then even if you hit record again after 5 minutes it will probably over heat and stop short of another 5 minute burst.
yeah i guess you might b right.. my 550d and eos-m over heats here in china’s hot weather all the time and that’s only rec 1080p for whatever time it is.. my ML hack just keeps restarting the recordings but drops 2-4seconds when it does.. which was ok as i have three cams shooting, i just change camera angles when it drops lols..
External recorder or rx10-2 is for you then
yes, i think your correct
Birdman. You may have heard of it. It won an award of some kind quite recently.
And reels for Super8 and Super 16 are over two minutes without a large mag (no mag available for super 8).
I picked a bad day to quit GAS…
The prices all went up though..
A7R II is $3200
RX10 II is $1300
and RX1000 mk4 is $1000
No shutter blade motion? Global Shutter?
If it was price $1999 maybe, but $3,198 Heck no! sorry I’ll wait it comes down that price and more, can’t justify buying one at that price. I don’t do video, and I use manual lenses, owner of a sony a7r. So 5.6 more megapixels for $3,198…nope.
I made the switch to all Sony as a professional last year. BEST decision I have ever made. Looking at this camera I bet Nikon and Canon are kicking themselves in the head for not investing in the full frame mirrorless revolution. Nikon and Canon keep rehashing the same thing while Sony, Fuji, Olympus and others are truly innovating. Four bad Nikons in a row sent me on the mirrorless journey and I thank Nikon for their mistakes every day!
That’s exactly why I left Nikon several years ago. Ended up with Sony via m43, very happy I did. Nikon’s attitude to problems was a disgrace.
Maybe. Apple wasn’t the first smart phone.. or the first with 3g.. etc, etc…
The question is, will Nikon and Canon now release a competitive product that steals the thunder, or not.
Don’t know. I’m still waiting for lenses other than a 35mm and 50mm prime that will wow me. The new Zeiss primes are looking interesting, but the perfect FE set still seems to be missing for a camera of this level.
I own the 28mm f2, Zeiss 55, and the 70-200 f4. My results with the 28mm and 70-200 G have been spectacular. Between those three lenses I have everything I need to get amazing results for my weddings. The only lens I really miss from my other systems is the Olympus 85mm.
no shit man
A6XXX where are you? 🙁
overheating until next couple of weaks – possibly. LOL.
All three cameras have internal 4k recording, this bodes well for a A6XXX or A7000. Hopefully, it’s other specs will be as aggressive as these.
Since a6000 is one of there best selling cameras they may want to do a bigger media splash with that announcement.
Where are all the know it all’s that were posting on the pervious posts for this camera? Awful quite in here.
Minimum shutter on auto ISO is programmable!
where are you getting these?
Sony site.
I missed that
Seriously seems like they fixed every known issue or complaint. 5fps with continous AF, AF is now more like A77 II in control. Shutter. 4K. IBIS. Works with A-Mount lens using on sensor PDAF. That insane sensor. Silent shooting. EFCS.
This is what I meant when I was saying A7ii was not enough of an upgrade. THIS is what it should’ve been.
Oh it has a Bright Monitor function too!
I was thinking the same. Seems like they’ve been addressing a lot of people’s complaints. I’m utterly impressed.
Bracketing without faux 14 > 13 bit?
No RX1 successor. Where is it?
Hum, maybe Leica released it, named “Q”…
Maybe the Q launch will put a fire under them to release curved sensor RX2…
RX1 successor only makes sense with a curved sensor (then of course, yes, bring it on). Otherwise total waste of another lens design.. Leica Q, what a waste… better spend the money on a good lens.. 1.7 summilux, rofl
Sony is plain freaking nuts. The new shutter is supposedly good for up to 500k cycles. 4K internal? 50 percent reduction in shutter vibration. Sony must want first place really bad. I think I must have this camera. Finally.
There is NO camera like this, by anyone. Anywhere. This absolutely NAILS it.
Yeah, I hate to say this- I think I’ll be selling some stuff of to acquire this sickness. Just reading over the specs. I can’t find fault. Even the price to performance seems reasonable. Dang.
I think I’ll need a new job lol 🙂
USB 2.0 is a fault.
Single SD card is another fault
Ok, chalk that up to one fault. 3k and only one card. Sony must be confident in those SD cards. They must know something I don’t.
This would be my only one.
USB 2.0 for $3000… is a bit redicilous.
Yep. Increased res WHILE increasing ISO and adding IBIS while adding 4K. Nobody is doing these things. No one.
5DS – seems so antiquated
GH4 – same
Beats both of them and is much much cheaper than buying both, is lighter etc
Housing too big (Dome for EVF)
Battery too small
No electronic global shutter
Missing touchscreen
No popup-flash
But still it is likely the very best camera you can buy for money in 2015
True. Not selling my A mount gear. I might start selling my M43 gear though. I got to much stuff anyway:)
Here here.
Housing is big- but it has the worlds largest magnification in an EVF. I’d say that’s one we can live with.
This may be my next camera, but not until late fall.
They might just be after Canon. Not trying to compete in DSLR space, rather instead oversaturating mirrorless market to make it the new best thing. By the time Canikon wake up, it will be too late. In fact with this camera, it already seems that they are too late.
This seems to be their strategy now.
With the SLTs they were competing WITHIN the relatively conservative DSLR market. It did not go well, despite all the advantages of EVF.
Now they switched to compete AGAINST the DSLR market as a whole. And that seems to work.
If this camera can match or exceed 5Ds(r) in image quality, it could be quite a blow in Canon’s face. This will probably beat the D810 in DR due to higher resolution. It will also beat 5Ds(r) in high ISO due to gapless microlenses and BSI.
Also, if this sensor can do reasonable OSPDAF with SLR lenses, we will probably see it in the rumored Nikon mirrorless camera soon, which leaves Canon in a tough spot for a while. This time around, though, Sony finally used the new sensor in their own camera, instead of giving Nikon a head start.
not much of a difference btwn 50 and 42. I think this was a smart move by sony.
42 is the Answer
When I see these today… I’m pretty sure that A7sII will be over-sexy for me
Been a HUGE A7S fan from the beginning… but think mine is departing this week!
Wonder if I sell my a7s and a few lens’s ill nearly have enough. . . but I love my a7s damn! Probably just get a used a7r for when I want resolution.
can’t imagine how a7sII can be, ISO1Mil?
Very nice launch indeed. Specs are drool-worthy except for one thing:
[3:2 aspect ratio]
35 mm full frame L: 7,952 x 5304 (42M)
That means still lossy compression RAW files. 🙁 Maybe we’ll have to wait for the A9 to get lossless compression/uncompressed RAW files?
What has that got to do with whether or not it has lossy compression? That’s just the resolution.
File size of course. A 42 MP image that is 42 MB uses lossy compression.
Everyone is so happy, nobody even complains about lossy RAW format anymore.
I was waiting for this comment. Suprised it took so long. Someone has to ruin the party:(
feel so sorry for his canon 5dr just arrived to his house today
But think about this: Sony is touting 100Mbps 4K video. Highest quality currently being recorded internally. But then for the still shooter, they can’t do uncompressed raw? Someone’s chasing the latest marketing buzzword of the moment rather than making a product as good as it can be.
Same goes for our engineers, we’re making cameras with subpar LCD JPEG engines (read: of little use for critical work) and then take away the option to instal high acutance focussing screens for those superlative f/1.4 manual focus OTUS lenses.
You take’s your choice, nothing will suit everyone.
Yes, that is a good point. I’m still scratching my head over the one card slot and yes…the lossy files. In truth, I don’t think it’s much of an issue. Still, you are paying top dollar for these bodies and the competition doesn’t have a problem throwing it in. Be nice to hear a response from Sony on the issue.
100Mbps is 12.5Mbytes/s which is not even close to a single 42Mpixel image with 14 bit (equivalent to 74Mbytes) in one second. Now imagine camera needs to operate at 5fps for still images.
video:
12.5 MB/s for a few minutes, uninterrupted = writing speed to flash
still:
74MB * 5 frames/s
370 MB/s into a RAM-buffer
Then camera is busy writing RAM to flash
Comparing this numbers does not allow a conclusion
It’s not flash, it is the buffer speed (and other internal processing units) limiting the amount of data collected from sensor to be written. That’s the reason for lossy compression.
I think it’s the buffer size only.
Lossy compression simply allows to buffer more frames before framerate slows down.
Your math is wrong. 14 bit and 42mp is 73.5Mbits, not Mbytes.
But you’re missing my point. Low end video compression is currently in the 20-30Mbps range. Sony is doing higher end video (50Mbps 1080P, 100Mbps 4K), essentially broadcast standard where many of the other ILC video implementations don’t reach broadcast standard. The clean HDMI is 8-bit 4.2.2, another reasonably good specification.
Yet on the still side, Sony is using only 11 bits where those in the know say that 12 bit is certainly well within the power of the sensor at all ISO values and better, and 14 bit is better at base ISO. On top of that, Sony is throwing out data in their compression scheme.
It seems strange that a still camera would optimize more highly for video capabilities than it does for still capabilities.
As for 5fps and 42mp and 14 bit, Nikon is easily doing 36mp that way, with various compression or NO compression choices. Sony is just being lazy about updating their still standards, basically. Yet they’re trying to tell everyone that they’re “top of the heap in image quality.” No. They’re not.
Which will lead about a hundred responses along the lines of “I don’t see a difference” or “it’s good enough.” I suspect you can’t see a difference between 28Mbps and 50Mbps 1080P, too. But there’s definitely one there, and for serious practitioners, there are times when it comes directly into play. The reason why broadcast standards are at 50Mbps is that broadcast signals get transcoded and recompressed downstream with cable and streaming. If you don’t start with optimal data upstream, you’re going to get terrible data downstream. While we don’t have a directly analogous situation in stills, I’m starting to demonstrate the real differences in my books. Yes, they’re subtle, but the differences are there, and they can be meaningful to some, especially at base ISO.
try to make it short:
1. 42*14/8 = 73.5 Mbytes
2. video has a different pipeline from still images. but suppose that you just compare the sensor read data rate between still images and 4K video at 30p:
4K video: 3840*2160*30 = 249 Mbytes/s
still image: 42*14*5/8 = 367 Mbytes/s
so it is almost similar between the two, even the video is lower as it has more processing in the pipeline. raw video after conversion to YUV goes to AVC compression at a high compression to make the output 100Mbs or 12.5Mbytes/s.
3. i didn’t say that lossless compression is not possible at all. It is possible when using more expensive hardware (buffer, etc.) that operate at twice the speed of this cam, but it is most likely not possible by a simple firmware update for the cameras designed to use lossy compression. A900 had lossless and nikon has it but at the cost of using more expensive hardware.
4. i didn’t judge nor do i now the quality of the lossy compression for still images.
Considering they have literally listened on everything else… I would suggest this too is a problem of the past.
according to specs it has the same raw format as the previous ones.
Not going to comment on that since there hasn’t been any tests yet.
Same with shutter shock that’s supposedly down 50% (but not removed…..)
I think it’s quite silly Sony is still offering a cooked RAW file, given that beast of a camera. I’d like to know the reason.
The specs on sony.net said something about 14 bit raw.
It says 14 bit raw to current A7 and A7R too.
Do the 399 PDAF points cover 100% of the Super 35mm crop? If so, this is HUGE!!!
OH MY GOD! Why sony? My tes is tomorrow, but i can’t even think of it now! ;(
It’s a camera. Go back to your books.
This is the GOAT
Enjoy.

FCUK ME… this just keeps getting better and better:
ISO Auto Minimum Shutter Speed!!!!
Prevent blur in a shot of a moving subject by setting a shutter speed at which ISO sensitivity starts changing when ISO AUTO (while in P or A mode, or in Multi Frame NR) is selected.
Expand Flexible Spot
If the selected AF point is not positioned on your subject, the α7R II automatically uses AF points surrounding the selected point to support precise focus.
The expandable flex spot is one of the best features of the A77II. If it functions well, it should convince a lot of shooters to put a bit more stock in mirrorless AF.
I first used it tracking an air show last year, it’s tits!
Agreed, that’s one feature I enjoy a lot on that camera as well.
Sounds like what is implemented in Nikon DSLRs for quite some time. But nevertheless, nice to have.
The highly compressed YouTube 4K looks really good on a 4K monitor. Pretty impressive.
Yup, super impressed as well… just imagine the A7Sii in the future.
GAME OVER!
After it comes out give it 60-90 days then the random deals/bundles will start popping up.
Agree, but being an owner of an a7r that doesn’t do any video and just photo’s with manual lenses I may wait even longer than that :/ 5.6 more megapixels. Im pressed to force myself to get one.
Christmas in June – thank you Sony!
I think I saw Barry lining up in an Amazon queue somewhere ;p
made my day, thanks 😉 !
How can I convince my boss we need this for IT?
Hmm..
BTW, a quick observation… whoever runs Sony.net (as opposed to Sony.com) really has their $hit together. That site is so well put together it’s impressive. Fantastic resource for anyone learning about Sony system.
Are you being sarcastic? I just visited it and it looks terrible. “New Releases” Not since June 4. Very impressive…
relatively speaking and compared to Sony.com it’s night and day. I hate their low-res, small gallery samples, but always find everything else on there easily
…maybe it’s just the effects of the euphoria from this morning’s announcement and a severe case of GAS going to my head. I dunno…
From dpreview.com:
“Sony says the on-sensor phase-detection AF can be used with A-mount and some third-party lenses. At the press launch in New York, Sony has been demonstrating the camera autofocusing Canon EF lenses using a Metabones adapter. A-mount lenses can now be phase-detection driven while using the simpler LA-E3 adapter, rather than the LA-E4 that had an SLT mechanism built in.”
Finally. Good news.
I am wondering about the Older Screw mount lenses like my 1.4/85mm and my Minolta 2.8/200mm. Will they work on the La-Ea3 as well, or only the newer SSM lenses?
only if possible to remove mirror from LA4 and camera accept this feature to work without it and focus using sensor af points… LA3 doesn’t include screw drive motor to power old lenses
LA-EA3 has no screw drive so they won’t have AF. LA-EA4 has AF with them but you can’t use on sensor AF points with that (According to announcement today). This might change in the future, I hope so.
Wow if this is what they put in their 7R II, then I can’t wait to see what sort of video features they have ready for the A7S MK2 😛
Also kinda unexpected announcement isn’t it, SAR didn’t even have a clue :O
A7sII will obviously have 4k internal, high frame rates, 5-axis and hopefully the improved shutter. With the small MP sensor it will do full sensor 4k readout in FF mode – the A7rII only does that in crop mode.
I first was impressed by A7R II specs and how Sony addressed virtually all complains and possible improvements,
and then saw the RX100 IV with its new stacked sensor, that collects more light than even BSI and 1/32000 shutter speed and 16 fps and was even more impressed 😉
I was impressed too, with the specs and the price. I guess I get to keep the RX100m3 for a while (it’s a great camera). The RX10m2 looks good – they kept it at the RX10 price level.
Yes, I have RX100 vrey first version, and was tempted by ver III for a while, now even more tempted with ver IV.
But have decided to only upgrade it after I hit 20k shots on it, I am currently around 10k. The problem is that I also have to make around 9K shots on an NEX 5N as well, because there are tempting and cheap replacements for it as well like A6000 🙂
Cool release, but none of them interest me. I want an update for the a6000 and that’s only so the a6000 price will drop.
I’ve seen A7II go for 1250.00 already. I’m sure in about 6 months you’ll be able to get it at least 500 cheaper. But yes, if you are willing to work around the A7R- then that is the “deal.” Pro’s who write this stuff off won’t care. It’s still a game changer.
I wonder if this is the final nail in the coffin of A-mount. If they finally can do reasonable (speed+low light) on sensor PDAF with A-mount lenses, continuing A-mount cameras serves very little purpose.
At this point I am willing to bet that the previous rumor of high-end FF A-mount coming sometime September might actually be about A9 instead.
Quite the opposite, you can now expect A99 II with this new 42Mp Full Frame BSI sensor with 399 PD-AF points, either with the mirror removed or with an option to flip it out up out of the way.
This is good news for A-mount, if Sony break even on A-mount today, they would be making profit by just putting this technology in an A mount body.
The OSPDAF may works on A-mount lens, but it does not guarantee the performance. It may just focus slightly faster than CDAF.
I bet the new A99ii will use the 79-point PDAF in A77ii + the 399 OSPDAF.
So user can choose to use the SLT or not.
Thats why they can leave the mirror in with a switch to flip it up if dont need the SLT AF speed
That’s what I’m hoping and thinking for a while. Since I shot portraits and speed is not essential, might as well have a mirrorless a mount, because all the f2.8 zooms are still in the a mount camp till they have a good FE replacement
Today, Leica announced the new “Q”. What a disaster. Sony will soak up the press.
Nah, not really because of no RX1m2.
Well, I have decided to go for the Q..
Looks like a good camera. It is interesting to see that even Leica is baking their raw files.
Nope, their DNG files are not cooked. Lens has some in camera correction, but it has nothing to do with the RAW file. Read Ming Thein review, actually it’s the most detailed and professional.
Actually, this is exactly where I found out that the RAW files are cooked. Here is what he said,
“There is no visible distortion or CA with this lens; I say visible
because I was told it employs software correction before even writing
the raw file; as a result it is very difficult to tell what the raw
performance of the lens might be.”
The RAW does not seem to be compressed, so I didn’t mean cooked in this sense.
Here I understand that the correction of the lens is applied to the RAW file (it happens every time you apply a lens correction in LR, for example), not that the file is compressed. And until now Sony RAW files are compressed. I don’t know if this monster has still compressed RAW files, but if so I find it silly.
I meant to say “compressed”. I never liked it.
Now one world about a battery and shoots per battery.
290 with EVF, 340 with LCD, steadily improved from previous models
In the past the LA-EA3 was limited to CDAF (slow focus), and the LA-EA4 basically bolted on a separate focus system from the SLT cameras to increase performance with A-mount lenses. Now, in the A7Rii the on sensor fast PDAF will work with A-mount lenses! This is a huge change and if it actually works, may spell the end of A-mount!
$3200 – well I guess we know what Mitt Romney’s kids are getting for Christmas.
I’ll just continue waiting for the mythical a6000 follow-on.
I would like to see a APS-c camera with a new sensor, 5-axis, more AF points, 4k video and so on as well.
No interest in video, but I’d like an upgrade to the EVF. And if there’s a better APS-C sensor at this time, then that too.
Let’s not politicize this forum. He is not running for president and if that will be the case, guess what, I’m happy for them
Lighten up Ernest – I actually think Romney is a basically good guy who came by his wealth honestly. Substitute the name of any ultra-rich Democrat if you prefer.
That sounds great to me!!!
I guess this is why sony Australia wants to smash all mirrors https://youtu.be/8waM16cPMyc
Seems like a waste of good glass.
Since I don’t have $3200 to spend (and stay married – plus new FE glass) please now give me an a6000 follow up with IBIS and the on sensor PDAF for A-Mount so I can use a 16-50 2.8.
Wow, wow, wow. So, Sony make it possible to use A mount lens with the on sensor AF, and I can ditch that medicore LA-EA4 adapter! I hope I can get this as a firmware upgrade on my A7II. Am I dreaming?
I have slowly but steady moving towards E Mount (Full Frame) despite the fact that previous to the A7R II the features on the A7 were not convincing me that much to completely abandon my A77 II. Sony has now realized that the features and tech (except the SLT) on the A77 II were worth to implement in the newest FE generation.
What does it really mean for the A Mount is uncertain. Sony has been pushing the mirrorless tech and you can see that on their profits lately on that segment. If they keep investing heavily in FE, IMHO, there will be little to no chance of the A mount to survive the long run. In the mean time I will be using my A77 II and A7 while this “New Tech” cools off and the price drops.
I find the A77II to be nearly perfect for most stuff. A mount glass is glass- which means I feel little reason to abandon it for reasons of better quality. Since FE seems to be the future though- slow migration is the best strategy IMO.
The A77 II is a great camera, specially paired with the 16-60 F2.8 and it can do almost everything you throw at it.
my guess – there will be an a99ii, and that’s the end of it.
Guys, anybody noticed that this camera is acctualy able to do 8k video?
Full readout sensor fo 42 mpx Thats incredible!
next model – youtube just announced 8k video support lol and that olympic games will be broadcast in 8k i’m told.. sony just pulled off a massive 4k live sports feed and was a full success so yeah, i can imagine 8k within the next couple of years.. and pulling stills from that would be crazy fun haha
Technically it exceeds the resolution of 8K, but someone has to hack the firmware, similar to magic lantern for Canon and I think also GH3/4 firmware was hacked.
I think there was a project started for hacked A7/NEX firmware, but I don’t think they had a lot of progress
$3200? I better start saving for the a99 replacement now!
looks to be the case.. mad eh!
then why u need upgrade?
They put the dial lock on the wrong dial! I have never “accidentally” changed the Mode dial on my A7R or A7S and that new locking mechanism on the A7rII’s Mode dial is unnecessary. It should’ve been on the Exposure compensation Dial which gets bumped inadvertantly ALL THE TIME!! aghhh… but still I’m pretty impressed with everything else.
Yeah, I really want a lock on the exposure comp dial. Happens to me all the time.
4K on FF or super35 with 1.8 non bining crop on the sensor
So do you think Sony fixed the 11+7 bit RAW capture?
Also, you do realize that even with a 40% improvement in AF speed, this camera will still not be a sports demon? But then again, with 5fps it probably was never meant to be one.
The a7r/II is a studio/landscape camera..
No for my budget for the next 12 months, i only hope to get one when it will be Sony A7R price ;)… However A7RII is definitly a heavy dunk on opponents ;). Sony MVP !!!! MVP !!!!
I want the a7rii….I want it now…I dont want to wait till August
The a7ii has been out for a number of months now
I want it all
I want it all
I want it all
And I want it now
…..
Correct
congrats on the release barry i’m happy for you. it turns out maybe sony heard you all those years after all?
I get 40% off through my job but I can only use it on one camera body from sony. I get to use it 4x though on lens, flash. I can not use the 40% again until one year passes. I think I will wait for the a7000. I really hate this job and I am only keeping it because of the 40%. As soon as I get my camera am out unless I change to another position that I like better.
Wayne, I hope that’s not your real name or you’ll be out of a job before you can blink your eyes! LOL
its not lol….
I doubt it will matter since I am not selling my discount
Before I want s.th. I would like to see how it performs. What do we really know so far?
June 17 says the B&H website. Personally, I’ll have to wait due to the old budget.
But doesn’t it just kill you that it’s not the highest res 135 sensor or that the stacked sensor went into the rx camera?
I believe the stacked sensor is still a bayer sensor.
Yes I would like more resolutio…
But this is a very high iso sensor.
Now that Sony has finally gone with BSI there is substantial potential for fure higher res sensors, and I am certain we will see that.
I am only buying one, so I will use this for my long lens when a higher res comes out , and use the higher res with the new 90mm macro.
This should be a real good low light camera.
So how long before the A7mkIII is out since it now has the outdated sensor, inferior AF and no 4K.
Or will the A7sII be first? Hmmm…
Six months and you’ll hear about the A7mk3. 🙂 After all Sony sells sensors, and they need to show them off to other Companies.
A lower MP version of this would be perfect for me, I frequently travel with a Macbook Air and those 42mp files are going to be huge. Others want the resolution, 24mp is the sweet spot.
External hard drive…

Now that A mount lenses will work on E mount without the mirror I do not believe Sony will be making new A mount bodies.
If I am wrong it will simply be the same E mount camera with a differrent physical mount and bigger controls.
There have been many false rumors on SAR and I believe the A99ii is a false rumor.
With this I agree. If the new AF really works as advertised in real world scenarios, the recently rumored A99ii in September is probably an A9 instead, perhaps with a new adapter (no SLT, but screw drive motor).
I just wish they announced this part of their plan before September when I go on a trip to India… That would simplify my choice by a lot – if it’s A9 and not A99ii, I just get A7rII with 55/1.8, 85/2, 16-35/4 and Amount 70-200 or 70-400 on adapter and leave 24-70/2.8, 16-35/2.8, 50/1.4 and 85/1.4 at home and save lots of weight 😉
a mirrorless adapter with screw drive motor? a-mont is dead, long live the a-mount! So, maybe no new a-mount bodies – but the lenses will linger on for ages and ages. The old minolta AF lenses are the eldest autofocus lenses existing. What an irony if Sony could manage to bring them over to the mirrorless future. Still i’m worried the future is SSM and SAM only. Only time will tell.
I’m starting to wonder myself. Integration is the name of the game. Make it work and everyone is happy.
If Zeiss releases E-mount lenses with similar specs than Sony’s,how can you be sure, that SLT-department knows what Mirrorless-department is doing?
There will never be another SLT camera.
On sensor phase detect now works with A mount and non Sony lenses.
It is also unlikely there will be another A mount camera , ubless they just stich an A mount on an existing E mount body.
I doubt the a99ii rumors are true.
sounds resonable
But Sony has marketing research departments, and I am quite sure they figured out that today there are enough photographers from yesterday, wanting to hold a big body to balance their lenses.
A99ii = maybe A7Rii with built in LA-EA3 adapter + screw-drive in a DSLR-like housing
It is, however, a shame if they did not add an additional lossless RAW compression mode, even if that mode would be slash fps in half, double file size and cripple the buffer capacity…
There are many who will never accept a compromise on image quality, even if it does not matter for real world applications. 12bit vs 14bit, SLT, 11+7. How do they keep missing this?
And also drop the 13 bits (false bits) for when shooting burst…
Just shut up… It’s getting annoying with all this 14bit nonsense…
Oh no!
I think if Sony put in uhs-II card reader they could of pushed 4K to 60p.
Perhaps current generation of BionzX is not fast enough for that throughput. Maybe future A7sII and A9 will feature faster processor.
Still would of helped take the load off the camera write time. 5fps burst. 5x 42+MB raw files 210+MB. Sandisks fastest uhs-1 does 95MB/s . Their sandisk extreme pro ush-ii does 280MB/s. Would of been no write time. Now people might encounter a “wait, still writing to card.” 2-3 second break till next burst shots.
Eventually after heavy use the camera will start heating up. I really hope not. The A7rII is really tempting(NEX-7>A7rII)
It doesn’t write directly to the SD card, it’s stored in memory (ie buffer) before being dump to the SD card
A slower card will result in longer buffer time. I tested it with my nex 7 10fps burst mode (RAW). 45MB/s vs 95MB/s. The difference was 10fps then went to single click…click …click. with 95MB/s i managed to get 13-14 burst shots then went to single shots, but the writing led went away quick so i could start again. Big + for video. 45MB/s 1080p 60p PS 28Mb camera overheated quick in 3~7+min. 95MB/s managed to get the full 30min. Now think 4K video 100Mb.
At the end of press release : 8 new lenses before 2016!!
Seems like Sony is betting high on this one. 🙂
Probably saving uhs-ii card reader for A7SII since its more towards video.
I can’t pre-order. Does anyone remember say the A7s or original A7r, how long after the release date, it was available, not back ordered? Does Sony have as good supply chain? Unlike Apple waiting a month or two to get a watch.
Unlike Zeiss, Sony has a pretty good record on product supply chain operation.
Pre order june 17
Question about the rx10m2
Is the stacked sensor a 3 layer foveon like sensor?
And if so is it 20x 3 layers or 7x 3 layers
It is not stacked in a sense you think. It is still Bayer array, but it includes additional stacks of processing circuitry and DRAM memory for faster read-out.
This allows them to copy the readings from the sensor to DRAM so quickly that rolling shutter (“jello-cam”) is basically non-existent.
Wonder why they didn’t include that in the full-frame sensor?
I guess it is a Exmor RS design
http://developer-static.se-mc.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/2013/05/stackedCMOSstructure_new.jpg
Maybe Exmor R BSI is the new marketing term after the success of NX1
No, it’s a bayer sensor.
“This ‘stacked CMOS’ design separates the photosensitive region of the sensor into a different layer from the circuitry; this allows more space for the light sensitive portion of each pixel.” -dp
That’s Megapixels NOT Megabytes.
Well, another hint is that they are still using the same RAW format version (“Sony ARW 2.3 format” for all A7 cameras). If something would have changed in the RAW format they would have called it something like “Sony ARW 2.4 format”.
That’s how you steal Leica’s thunder!
Truth be told!
What did I say?
http://www.mirrorlessrumors.com/sony-steals-the-leica-show-and-announces-a-superb-a7rii-rx100m4-and-rx100m2-camera-trio
Steve Huff will have to be either torn…or lie twice about having the best camera ever, bar none, forever…EVER….but hey…he’s a crazy guy!!
Someone should start a Kickstarter project to supply Leica stickers to be used on this camera by Leica fans in denial 🙂
Not really. The IQ of the Leica Q is super astonishing. I would even sa that despite is being 24MP rather than 40 it will be close and it won’t have the compression effects from lossy raw. The colour from this Q is one of the best I have seen in a 35mm camera, it’s’ astonishing.
This site should be called Sony AllOutOf Rumors! We were left in the dark on this one. I am glad I check this site 8 times a day for all that “insider info” lol!
Ok, hold the phone a second here. On Sony’s web site it says;
Phase-detection AF with A-mount lens
Advantages of the phase-detection AF are assured even with an
A-mount lens mounted via LA-EA3 (LA-EA1).
Well, ok except I own the LA-EA1 and it does not have the motor
in it to autofocus on older Sony and Minolta lens whereas the LA-EA4 does thus
it can auto focus with the older lenses including my Minolta 300mm f/2.8. so this
means all of the lenses without the electronic motor in lens will not work and
will the still need the LA-EA4 so you have to read the fine print on this one.
When I look at compatible accessories on the Sony site it only
shows the LA-EA3 and LA-EA4! Confusing. I wonder if this is software and they
can apply to my A7II or if it is due to the new sensor?
LA-EA1 is APS-C only, thus it’s not listed as an accessory. And it’s not being produced anymore. For the Minolta: Yes, obviously only lenses with integrated focusing motor are supported. So almost every new A-Mount lens.
The LA-EA1 adapter is APS-C sized. I also think you would need a special adapter for screw drive lenses.
They might add LA-EA5 which contains AF and aperture motors, but without SLT. Strange that they did include that in this announcement, would make a lot of sense.
Yeah I know, I bought it for my NEX6 and use it on my A6000 sometimes. However on those cameras and using it on the A7II in crop mode it does not support Autofocus on any attached lens SSM or SAM. So now they are saying it will on the A7RII so I was questioning them supporting that one for autofocus..
AF does technically work for SSM lenses on LA-EA1, but so horribly that you’re better off just manually focusing anyway.
So buy the LA-EA3 already…..????
Very Confusing the Specs on Sony Say;
Lock-on AF, Eye AF, Predictive control, Focus lock; Eye-start AF and AF micro adjustment (both only available with optional LA-EA2 or LA-EA4 attached), AF illuminator (built-in, LED type, range: Approx. 0.30–3 m), AF ON
But the Overview says;
Phase-detection AF with A-mount lens
Advantages of the phase-detection AF are assured even with an A-mount lens mounted via LA-EA3 (LA-EA1).
The LA-EA2 and LA-EA4 on Sony spec are mentioned in context of micro adjustment, not AF compatibility. Micro adjustment is not applicable for LA-EA1 or LA-EA3 since on-sensor focusing is used and there is nothing to adjust.
Product page on Sony.net also mentions compatibility with A-mount lenses on LA-EA1/3, but obviously only SSM or SAM lenses with motors in lens will work, since those adapters do not have screw drive motors.
What does the motor have to do with anything? with LA-EA1 and 3, the motor is in the lens. the adapter simply there for data communication.
Damit .. i mean Ops .. Sony did it again .. But for this price tag A7II seems to be a better choice for me 🙁
That A7R II is a real monster .. Damm
Yes, not so special, but sooooo expensive.
Boring. I keep on waiting for A900 II or at least A99 II…
Street, weddings, architecture, art… so… everything minus… sports? Who cares about sports, I don’t spend my life shooting sports. Who does? 🙂
The RX10m2 looks like it’s targeting the blackmagic micro. with its 2.8 lens, 1 inch sensor, S-log2 and NDs the only missing bit is raw. It would be perfect if it would record 4k 50p. Oh, how could I forget the crappy XC10. Dead in the water against the Sony.
nar, its target is to wipe that new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000 off the face of the earth lols.. with just $300 difference and 25-400mm/F2.8-4.0 in panasonics favour and 3 stage ND and s-log in sonys favour… sony should win sales very easily here.
Panasonic could go V-log 4k 50p. What I love about Sony is how it’s broken the convention syndrome and they’re presenting the cameras when they like and it’s better for them. They have a win in their hands here for the summer season.
I guess the PDAF in the LAEA4 will still focus faster than OSPDAF, especially low light.
I would have bought RX100M4 only if it had 4K @60fps < 15 min.
It seems that it has 30fps and ridiculous 5 min limit.
I have no reason to upgrade from LX100 with m43, 30fps, 15 min limit
At this price and with such radical innovation, WHY, oh WHY still only USB 2.0????
Have they compensated by allowing fullspeed download using WiFi?
USB 2.0 is 480Mbit, which in reality can achieve 50Mb/s transfer. Should be enough for most tethering scenarios…
I suspect that no USB 3.x and no UHS-II support is due to current BionzX – it simply cannot handle that kind of throughput. But since USB 2.0 and UHS-I is reasonably enough, they chose not to redesign the processor.
you can still remove the sd cards
It would find itself in a compatability limbo, USB type C is about to replace USB 3.1 as the standard and it isn’t physically backwards compatible.
Meh 42mp and no USB 3…
Why Sony, why…
Really? You can just remove the card and slide it into a USB 3 port on your computer. I never upload from the camera…unless you’re talking about..well, what exactly are you referencing.
Phones have had USB 3 for some time now because it makes sense.
This only shows Sony isn’t paying attention.
Best to wait for A99ii :p
USB-3 is dead, USB-C is the next thing! (And no, they are not same thing!).
USB 3 would be useful in tethering environments.
sony releases an awesome camera with more features than most people expected and people complain about the the usb port? I swear some people are just going to hate regardless
I think this puts all the A9 or “pro” FE rumors to bed. Sony just dropped the mic with this one.
Agree
Or they could drop another one before Olympics with the A9, in response to D5 and 1DxII 🙂
Yup, still no high FPS FF E-mount camera yet. Really surprised the A7s wasn’t that camera, processing only roughly half the data per shot as the A7. Maybe the new AF tech will make the A7sII Sony’s sports camera?
price is pro at least.
Agreed
More complexity which could impact the yield due to larger sensor die?
But at some point in future improvements like this will lead to truly global electronic shutter rendering mechanical shutter obsolete. That future is probably not too far away.
Would be great if the A99R or A99II come with the A7RII features and:
– More FPS
– GPS
– Dual Slot Card
– Better Battery life
– Better ergonomics
– Zoom Lenses F2.8
My bet is that there will be such a camera, but it will not be A99X. It will be A9X.
I do not hate A-mount, I am using FF A-mount every day, but I am pessimistic about it’s future.
Agreed. If they do actually release one more, I guarantee it’ll be the last one. At this point, though, I doubt there’s even one more coming.
Might be a good time to let go of the A99xx and start accepting that Sony has no plans of interest in maintaining that line. 🙂
Not bad, the promised “20 minute rumor” was real this time. Good job, @SAR_Admin, 20 minutes ahead of the official announcement – seems like an achievement! 🙂
You have to agree, though, that Sony has done an amazing job on keeping things under the lid for this one. Production has probably already started, marketing materials are all already there, there are probably many units being field-tested, yet there were no conclusive rumors up til announcement! They really deserve a credit on this one 🙂
Agree! And most likely they also control “leaks” 🙂
it s shows that leaks are most of the time coming from companies
Rumor leaks may have factored in to Sony announcing this 3 months prior to release versus the original a7 bodies which were announced shortly before release.
Not even a leaked invite to the NY press event or something from North Korea. Yay Sony!
That sounds possible
@SARadmin any info about the 8 new lenses announced?
Dang comments are climbing. My guess is it hits 540.
620
42
9000
No multiframe hi-res mode
99% this feature will arrive via firmware update.
Would be killed if it did.
Donno is Sony has the common sense to do it though. They don’t exactly have a track record when it comes to after the sale type updates. :/
No chance. It will be a $10 paid app like that crappy timelapse app.
I hope not.
Who needs it? You’re getting hi-res with a single shot!
Dying to see some full size samples.
Not sure about that one.
Wow. $3200 is going to hurt, but the A7rII looks like everything I’ve ever wished for. So far I have only 3 questions/concerns:
1) Specs say 14 bit RAW, no indication if it is still lossy or has been improved to lossless.
2) Focus peaking is listed under the LCD section in the specs, conspicuously NOT in the viewfinder section – not having peaking in the viewfinder would be an epic fail (at least for me, but my wallet would be thrilled to hold on to that $3200).
3) Zebras also under LCD, not viewfinder. For me disappointing but I could live with it.
Obviously I’d expect peaking and zebras to be configurable as not everyone will want them.
Anyone know the story on any of above? I’m really hoping the peaking/zebras is just a quirk of the specs layout and that both can be enabled in the viewfinder. Would seem crazy to limit to LCD.
Heat dissipation in a smaller space. There are tradeoffs. Always. In any product.
Say what now? This is some serious sheeet!
Folks, here’s the first pic taken with the camera after purchase.
I think it’s time to finally unload my A900, free up cash for this baby. 🙂
Good luck selling your A900 as from August the only FF camera sold in the world will be A7RII.
Funny, but really… nobody uses cash these days.
with the attached 35/1.4?
Sony’s new slogan after today:
“Sony – Steal the Thunder”
They totally did from Leica today.
Wow, mirrorless AF with A-Mount lenses??
If true, that would be a real game-changer, first since Sony launched the whole “FE” story.
Far more interesting than the A7R2 itself…
Waiting anxiously for the real tests
I’m not at all surprised myself. ie, it made no sense whatsoever for Sony to continue to develop transient technology such as SLT camera’s.
Maybe, but it doesn’t sound like A mount is dead. Quite the opposite really. I want to see how this new AF works with SSM.
Up untill yesterday I was commenting for this and you critisized almost every one of my comments…
Why was it such a bad idea yesterday and such a good idea today?
Up until yesterday I thought this was impossible
The question is .. What would be the price of A7S II ? :/
I bet it’s backlit and more res. That’s my guess.
I think BSI and stacked, with slow mo capabilities, 60p 4K at an even higher bit rate, with even better high ISO sensitivity and quality.
I think it could be lower
I´m afraid it will be quite expensive, such as A7RII is.
It looks to me that A7rII replaced both A7r and A7s, considering the bump in iso capability. Sony might be patiently buiding the next big thing.
Theoretically it should be cheaper than the A7r2… Can bet a dollar.
Ok deal .. I bet A7S II will be priced between $3699-$3999
For $1
Deal.
So it has optional EFCS AND a fully electronic shutter mode? Oh man, I never believed that part on the first rumors…
HAHA!
And the dinosaurs….
Don’t forget about them. 🙂
That said, I think it’s safe to say that e-mount is the future of Sony imaging division.
It is 6:43 in Japan right now. In a few hours you’ll be able to hear Canikon design team flipping tables and jumping from windows. Double points if they actually had a FF mirrorless in the works.
Its more likely that Canikon managers shifting dates in their release plans
Meanwhile, DSLR sales still dominate mirrorless sales, somehow. So Canikon are probably feeling just fine.
u make me think to nikon guys still waiting for a new d700, they can’t see that the image quality of the d600 is killing their camera…
Maybe it doesn t fit you but this camera is everything but boring!! ( let s just see the reviews to be sure..)
anyone knows something about batteries? what about this new sensor which needs more energy, isnt it?
Oh man. Sony is killing it. Leica just announced a really nice Q with AF and full frame and Sony just crushes them… but you gotta give it to Sony, what they’ve been offering in the last 2 years is simply astonishing.
Folks, thee ol’ ball and chain is calling me to diner. I’m going to see how it goes when I drop this purchase on her. Should go down real smooth like shiiit in a grinder.
Maybe when she sees your ten other camera bodies and 100 lenses it doesn’t help your cause.
Very true!
6 hours and he’s not back yet. I’m guessing that means it didn’t go well.
What does 3.5x faster than A7r refer to? It’s not the AF, or is it?
maybe the startup time or image to image delay ?
I thought, the readout-speed of the sensor!
Used for video recording without pixel binning.
(That should reduce the noise level drastically)
Lot of money. No doubt it’ll be £3200 in the UK. Won’t be many takers at that price. I’ll hang on for the reviews and a reasonable price drop before getting rid of the A7r (which as a camera is a bit of a dog to be frank and the Mark II needs to show a massive improvement).
Wait a few months, Samy’s will be selling refurbs for $1200.
From your keyboard to God’s ears. But I doubt it – not unless it’s a dog…and I seriously doubt that.
Digilloyd is reporting same 11+7 bit compression.
That means it is not worth $3k,..
But unlike you he actually made some nice pictures with the old one……
Ignore her, she’s a troll.
You’re going to be waiting a LONG time…
Did they fix:
A. Sensor Glass Thickness
B. 11+7 bit color lossy compression scheme
C. Shutter Shock because “no shutter blade motion” isn’t very clear or maybe they just didn’t want to admit that there ever was a problem. Because those shutter blades have to be moving one way or another. Maybe brad engrish ?
Shutter Shock is fixed.
1) New shutter system is much smoother.
2) You have a electronic front curtain option which cuts the shock down even further
3) You have a full electronic curtain option aka “silent mode” which has no shutter movement at all.
Are you 100% positive about the full electronic mode?? If so then this is my dream camera!!
Yeah, it’s in the specs.
No, the specs say “silent mode” which could be interpreted in various ways…
Hahahaha brad engrish
If you by A is thinking of the colour artefacts and sharpness smearing on the sides and corners when using adapted legacy lenses it is not so much caused by the sensor glass as by the non telecentric ray angles in combination with the small pixel pitch of high MP sensors.
So that problem propably remains.
Using a STACKED BSI sensor just like in the RX10 II and RX100 IV could help as the photodiodes are closer to the surface of the sensor. But for such a FF sensor we will have to wait for coming generations of the A7 cameras or the rumored A9.
Yes, yes and yes…………. nowwhatyougonnacomprainaboutyousirryplick?
“Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in”
I’m sure I’ll hate the ergonomics and battery life ect ect but yeah I’m buying this.
Do you know how much free porn you can download for $3200 ? Well neither do I but I’ll bet it’s a lot. A whole lot.
I’m sure it’s a great camera. Would I love one? Yes. Could I afford one: Yes..easily.
Will I buy one? No.
No way I can justify this kind of expense for a hobby camera. I’m getting great images with my A7 that enlarge to 24×36 perfectly. That $3200 will pay for a flight to Greece and two+ weeks of Airbnb and meals for me and my lady.
I’m embarrassed to admit that 23 years ago, I spent $3200 for a then state-of-art Toshiba 2200SX laptop – 20MB hard drive, 10.5 inch screen with 16-gray shades.
Today, I’m smarter with my money.
$3200 may pay for a flight to Liberia and two+ months of stay in an Ebola free hotel.
You Just made my day
really glad to hear, oh wise one. leaves 1 more a7rii to us who actually want it. with the fine distinction that i DONT have the funds. meh. see, youre a better person than me in 2 ways^^
btw… whats the point about that last story, of course you wouldve spent thousands on a laptop 23 yrs ago thats considered abysmal today, doesnt mean it was a stupid investment?!
if you really can afford”easily” then you re not smart you re somethin else..Cause in that case that means that u can travel and use the camera!
You don’t get it. I’m happy with the cameras I own, the lenses I own, and the photos I get with them. There are a lot of things I could afford, but don’t spend the money on them, because of satisfaction with what I already own.
That $3200 invested in AAPL (Apple) will likely yield a 20% or more return by year’s end. Invest it in a biotech ETF or a good MLP stock, and you could earn roughly the same. Hold it a few years and you’ll double your money.
I know that kind of thinking escapes those who think that just because you can afford to buy something you should buy it. I can like something and want something I can afford – and NOT buy it.
So what your saying is I need to buy some apple stock right now? Cause if you think that’s worth it then let me know. I got the impression it’s overvalued. 20% return is pretty hefty though.
i pointed one word, maybe you re too smart too see it and i t was “easily”, all my reply reside on that, get it?
Did you read Sony marketing speech ? Pro… Pro… Pro… Not “hobby”
Nah…
Pro means nothing today. Hobbyist buy a 5Diii, too: $3K
Zeiss Otus = $4K / and I remember a statement from someone who claimed that lens will not likely bought from professionals, because they get cheaper tools that do the same job. And $1500 lenses are still good enough, even when there exists something better. It’s more likely that enthusiast buy this lens.
That sounded very reasonable for me!
-2 EV AF. Awesome. It will focus in as low light as the pro Canikons. This is definitely the camera I’ve been waiting for. Even if the A9 is lurking behind the curtains waiting to rain misery down on Canon, I think I will be happy with the A7RII. I might convert my A7R into an IR or full spectrum camera now.
I wish it had 10bit 4:2:2 hdmi video output. It is still 8 bit an internal is only 8 bit 4:2:0 and Sony really needs to design a much bigger battery for the A7 cameras. And wheres the touchscreen and dual SD card slots, i also wish it had USB-C/3.1 or Thunderbolt instead of USB -2.
or Sony needs to market these as upgrades with an A9. I suspect that the A7rII will overheat with long periods of video recording and a larger bodied A9 would not…
it’s good to finally see BSI FF sensors! looking forward to seeing results from this camera even though I haven’t the slightest interest to buy it 😀
At the end of the Sony A7RII press text you’ll find this: “By early 2016, Sony will add an additional 8 new lenses to its FE full frame lineup”. That’s great news!
Only thing I don’t think you mentioned in there is the cycle life of a claimed 500k on the shutter. That…that’s just ridiculous.
I hope this also means BSI sensor for A7000
I just finished a full review of the new A7RII. Thoughts? (I included a few comments from the SAR section!)
http://www.smartphotography.com/blog/sony-a7rii-review
I’m a little confused with your comparison… it looks like some of your info under the A7RII and A7R columns are switched? You have 40% faster under the A7R and metering down to -3ev also under A7R, but further down the page you mention that the -3ev of the A7RII is big step forward???
Your table is really messed up (burst rate, battery, metering, AF speed, video, video codec).
yep table is borked
More like Jeff Wanker, that’s supposed to be a review?!? Please
full review ???
Without touching the camera ??
Pure guessing base on the spec?
Shouldn’t that call brief preview?
Did you forget the sealed big boxes with A7Rii for some photographers?
I am quite sure they were not allowed to publish anything until today!
Maybe Jeff Walker…
(guess how this sentence ends…)
Yep you’re right! Mostly a spec review
A “full review”? LOL
A comparison chart at best. How do you call it a “full review” without camera in hand, or sample photos? It makes your web site name “smart photography” seem kinda dumb.
Table fixed, thank you! And yes “full” as in I go through all the specs. With all the different reviews and press releases sometimes its nice just to hear the important stuff 🙂
I’m not trying to be a dick but to me its a preview if anything not a review. A review would involve genuine hands on experience and testing. Thank you for the spec comparison though 🙂
check AF-speed in your table again.
Looks like you mixed up the columns, here
Your information table has several bits of information transposed.
which ones?
Are you an idiot or what? You info table is screwed up
that is not a review.
you did not even touched the camera to begin with.
lol
That isn’t review, that is PREVIEW.
I think Sony will lower the price. The A7r II is $1500 more than the A7 II. Thats 88% more. I bet at the higher price points, there is a ever smaller market. Many people would never spend more than $2k for a body. $3k is pro level. If you are earning $$ from it than it is ok, but I wonder how many they will sell at $3200. Add tax, or VAT. I can see this at $2,800.
Every camera has dropped within a few months. I saw an A7II go for 1250.00 last month when they dropped the price 200 bucks for a few weeks. I’m in no hurry, but I want it really bad.
a900 II? Uh…
Still limited to 11+7 bit lossy compressed files. Definitely not worth the money. All of these advancements and they choose to limit the image quality. And, yes, it is an issue..
not you again… stop it please with this bs, i really don’t give a rat’s ass about your wacko theory of 11/7… i have a Nikon 750 and a Sony A7s, love them both…. and no more links please.
I’m sure it’s a great camera. Would I love one? Yes. Could I afford one: Yes..easily.
Will I buy one? No.

Yes, this is nosebleed territory for me too. I wouldn’t even think seriously about something in this price range. Right now the camera industry thinks that the absolute top tier, bought by people with little sensitivity to price, is all they have left. I hope they eventually calm down and realize there’s still a lot of us for whom a phone camera is never going to do the job, but who will never spend 15X that amount for a serious camera.
Dude, just put it on your credit card and rack up debt like everyone else. Problem solved.
Sir, please tell me you’re not a financial planner:)
No, he’s a banker.
lol omg epic comment. That is the real world 🙂
Yeah, I’m coming down off the high as we speak. Am I impressed? Heck yeah. Sony blew it out of the water on this one. I could drop that cash- but then I think. Wait, I can get an A7R in a few months for 1/3rd that price. Pro’s are using that just fine. You can get the G7 for 800 bucks and it does internal 4k. The list goes on and on. For those that can JUSTIFY the purchase- I’m all for it.
P.S. Despite said comment, I will be counting every penny for the next few months thinking about it. I might even skip pepperoni on my pizza this friday night..you know…”what if.”
Agreed. I’m a hobbyist as well. If my income relied on this then certainly, but can’t justify this. Will enjoy vicariously on this round.
it is a huge upgrade to A7. even A7II was a big upgrade (IBIS). my suggestion, wait for sometime and buy this at a reduced price.
I’m in the exact position as you. It’s more of a sensibility thing, than anything else.
Having said that, I await the flagship A-mount body.
I also have a high-end laptop experience: in 2000 IIRC, I spent $2200 on a Micron T1000, complete with PATA 40GB HDD, USB1.0 and Firewire, mini-PCI 802.11 upgradeability, 2.0GHz P4, hot-swappable optical/floppy/HDD bay, bridge battery, and above all, biometric BIOS-level fingerprint scanner security!
You know what? I AM STILL USING IT, AND IT WORKS GREAT. Upgraded to 320GB faster PATA HDD, installed and upgraded 802.11 mini-PCI wireless to n, upgraded Win2k Pro to XP Pro.
On the downside, the battery no longer holds a charge, and I haven’t put in a replacement.
My point is that reliability and upgradeability are very important and can extend the life of such devices greatly. 15 years later and still going strong.
Expensive? Yes. Worth it? I would have to say yes, but only just. Hard call.
Give ebay a chance around Black Friday and you will findit there around $2500, That’s a fair price for such a camera.
Needs & wants. ‘Smarter’ is not always in the equation 🙂 .
Admin, what happened? Sony really defeated you this time around.
Up till yesterday I got nothing but critism for my repeated calls for bsi, fast non a mount af compatabilty
And few if any comments in support of my comments.
Today everyone is all excited about what a great cc thing BSI is…and have not yet realized how important this new af compatability is going to be for Sony’s future success.
I think this might be more of a success story for A mount users the FE users. It’s a solid sign for moving forward. Better options are on the horizon.
The EF metabones adapter with AF has existed for years (I think it’s up to version 4 now). I’ve used it myself. While it is great that a future version can possibly take advantage of the OSPDAF, Sony designed the new AF system with their own e and a mount lenses in mind. Better AF with a-mount lenses on e mount bodies is something all a mount users have been wanting, you’ve just been the loudest. What you previously wrote is that you wanted sony to design a camera that natively communicates and focuses canon lenses and that was just silly.
But if you feel compelled to take credit that you somehow convinced sony about how to design this camera and gave them their ideas…yeah sure, go for it.
Make.Believe
I am not sure if I understand what I am reading…
LAEA4 has a SLT mirror and and AF-sensor built in
LAEA3 has not
LAEA4 focuses by its own, camera-AF signals are ignored
LAEA3 does only what camera-AF tells to do
If A7Rmk2 has a really good AF module, it can be faster than current LAEA4. Tests will show
Am I the only one who noticed there wasn’t a II at the end of the R????
seems on purpose, there is II on the back though.
I was thinking about the same thing. Obviously, anyone who knows something about the A7 series could tell which is which, but I’m not sure what’s the point of not adding a Mark II somewhere visible on the front of the camera.
They probably want to fool people into thinking the A7R never existed.
What sort of machine’s are able to handle these 40MP files? I’m running with a brand new 2015 Retina iMac that lags like hell with my 5D3 22MP files. (lightroom 6)
42 mp !
Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe, and Everything else from Canikon
So, all this is just to make AbismalLarry happy?
Since the recession has been over for a couple of years now, we are back to the old normal of pricing.
The a99 replacement will be more on the 4000$ side, rather 3500$.
At that price, it won’t sell. It won’t sell at all. It would have to be this camera times 10.
Sometimes common sense leads the way.
It depends what they package in the a99. I will not have to have a lot more than this a7r2. If the E mount continues to be a success it will help to rise awareness of the A mount as well. Most of Pro photographers that use canon and Nikon are not even aware that Sony is doing A mount with Zeiss lenses on a FF body.
A99 replacement ..
Why on earth would Sony spend R&D money developing an obsolete mount?
Just look a the A7Rii…
It has everything a prosumer could ask for and then some.
I need larger body, longer battery life,
Dual card slot, UHS-II support.
No overheat.
70-200F2.8 , 300F2.8 lens without adaptor
Can the OSPDAF focus as fast as 1Dx or D4s at indoor?
A77ii focus a mile faster than A6000 at indoor.
No clue on larger body I haven’t shot with one. And better battery life certainly wouldn’t mean SLT, as a grip could solve both points.
Though I’m thinking a better path ti improved battery life would be via battery innovations. Which I’m guessing could already be achieved given the recent advancements in this field with smartphones and portable computers.
As for dual card slot, this seems like more of a a fad than a fact given the progress we’ve made in digital storage over the years. As for focusing, this remains to be seen. Though again, a sport body certainly wouldn’t imply using an outdated mount and tech. either. And so for me, these points are simply too weak to equate maintaining a dead horse. Which is likely why Sony is putting all it’s efforts on developing mirrorless tech. instead of SLT. Which btw. is the future of digital imaging. – ie, forward not backward
Dual card slots is important for backup not for more storage.
SD-card can die anytime, not often occur but it can be.
During important event such as wedding, always shoot with 2 cards.
You don’t want lost some important shoot if the SD card die.
What about wifi?
I guess there is *SOME* possibility that there will be option to transfer files to backup device while you’re shooting.
You can’t do backup via dual slots as dual-slot can kill both cards same time and mostly does.
The SD cards are lost when swapped and stored, they get destroyed when they are out of the camera. That is the true backup reason why you have dual slot that when you have card out of the camera, they both don’t get lost, destroyed or so on.
The most common mistake anyone does with SD cards is that they are in heat of the shooting session, card gets full and they didn’t notice the count and were too lazy to swap card in time when there was changes.
Now the card gets full and it is a must to swap to new one. They pop reader cover out and take new card from pocket, swap cards and place the old one to pocket and continue shooting.
After session they start reading photos from cards to computer and they start searching where is the card where the specific photos were… It has been dropped and lost.
That’s why it is important feature when you are doing things alone and you are not skilled to manage cards correctly.
But SD cards dying so it is unrecoverable? Never happened on me unless I stepped over the card or other way physically damaged it so that it get twisted and NAND chip inside broken or one ironing gone.
There is always a way to recover the data from the SD card if you have little more than basic computer skills to do it. Why dual-slot cameras are not required and are just adding more trouble to handle two cards instead one.
If you get the card reading/writing error, just swap the card and continue. Keep the card in safe as you can recover every photo from the card except maybe the last frame you just captured.
You need to use forensic science recovery programs instead free easy recovery applications, but it is nothing more than placing card to card reader, opening application and answering Y/N for couple questions and you get every file back from the card.
Couple friends didn’t believe be either so I presented it with old cards. Dropping cards to water, placing them trough the washing machines, freezing them in fridge and one was even placed trough magnets. When camera said “Card Error”, its content was recovered just with computer. At least 99% success rate every time.
Now those CF and Sd cards are truly erroneous after heavy beating up. 2/3 cards gives with 50% change error after 50 frames. So they are great to be used to present how card malfunctions are not a risk and not a problem than for those who panic and doesn’t handle computers.
I agree most of the time the SD card can be recovery.
However, some people suggest that SD-card can be permanently damage by static charge or overheat
But IMHO, better to be safe than sorry, especially wedding. 🙂
..
I have a few times that my DSLRs freeze during shooting burst in sport event, the red light keep turning on, but the camera have no response on any button for over 1min. I have to toggle the power switch a few times, remove the battery to make the camera back to normal.
Then a pop up message, card can not be recognize.
Please format your card. =__=” …
Remove the card and insert it again, it said damaged database,
Do you want to recover the unsaved image? or recover the database?
It happen on different Sandisk Extreme Pro Cards.
..
Can understand your position but if your desired A-mount cam does not arrive then the bottom line is go E-mount or elsewhere. I currently shoot A-mount.
I think I will wait until 2016 to see what happen 🙂
I guess we have 50% chance to see a A99ii
or 50% chance to see a larger body mirrorless A9 .
If not I may go to Nikon but I will miss the EVF :-X
I really love to shoot with histogram display & zebra pattern for ETTR.
A7rII is generating lots of comments/interest. If this translates to sales then I think the odds of A99ii drop below 50%. A9 will be E-mount so odds are the form factor will be smaller than A-mount. Given that film A-mount and older were small compared to current A-mount I don’t have an issue with smaller form factor or current larger A-mount size. Hope you get what you need. I’m not keen on adaptors but I think that is where A-mount will end up.
I’m not against the a7 format and I’m sometime thinking of selling my A mount gear and go E mount.
Yet on a larger body they can store more and more reliable hardware. Sony spoke person already stated before that bigger size in body and lenses gives more, that is why the A mount is there to stay.
An 99 replacement will probably have: sturdier body, better battery life in spades and other enhancements about storage, buffer etc. The A mount lenses generally deliver better performance and they open at larger aperture to begin with.
Nothing wrong with the E mount lenses, but all the A lenses especially the Zeiss seems sturdier to me.
Sounds good, but the question of viability for the A-mount remains. ie, the A99 wasn’t exactly a cash cow and Sony is demonstrating its profit line by the massive push on mirrorless tech.
That said, I’d also question the rational behind developing yet another SLT FF camera on the market when a mirrorless could do a better job. ie, such as the cost of R&D only to delivery sub-par sensor specs amidst the competition whern they could just as easily take the crown using a mirrorless solution.
Case and point, it simply doesn’t make sense for Sony to be putting money into another SLT professional system at this particular juncture. A year ago… perhaps, but now… it just seems as though that window has passed.
Sony does same thing as Olympus does. Have a way to “transfer” old customers to new tech.
Olympus made E-M1 with PDAF so existing 4/3 lens owners can buy a new body and continue using 4/3 mount lenses while Olympus release PRO line of lenses that replaces the 4/3 lens line.
Olympus customers can buy the 7-420mm focal length range (35mm format field of view equivalent is 14-840mm) while PDAF is slowly abandoned as the PRO line works with CDAF that gives improvements over PDAF.
Sony did the same for A and E mounts, just keep your old lenses and buy A7 body and adapter. Wait that your needed E mount lenses comes available and buy those, or adapt something with adapter from others or A-mount. But slowly you need to invest to E mount as A is dead and SLT is dead too.
I just listed my a7II, one of my kidneys, and what’s left of my liver on amazon… If they don’t sell by the end of July, I will be back on the stripper pole. I will be getting the A7RII, but I’m curious what the a9 will offer that the A7RII doesn’t have…
There’s an A9 in the pipe?
I haven’t seen anything suggesting this myself.
You are right. Nor have I. Just rumors.
Look the A7r II specs. Does it fill the requirements the A7 II didn’t offer and let you down? If you once or twice a day curse A7 II missing something or behaving badly, then you have reason to buy A7r II.
If A7r II doesn’t have something you need, then best choice is to hold on A7 II and use it to make money and wait to see if there comes better body from Sony.
But just like on computers, there is never good time to buy a computer, so buy now and don’t wait as otherwise you wait forever.
Lol! I read The specs just like you did. Its obvious the A7RII it is vastly superior than the A7II. I want the A7RII so I’m selling the A7II and also perhaps my a7s (but not the shogun), but that doesnt mean there is anything wrong with any of them. They are all great cameras.
The point i was trying to make is with as many features packed into the A7rII, what else could the rumored A9 offer? The A7RII has everything! Doesnt mean im waiting on it.
No one should curse a piece of technology if it doesn’t meet your expectations. You should curse yourself for not doing the proper research, or you curse the manufacturer for not delivering a product as expected. Or lastly dont curse anyone and just sell it, because someone else will want it, tech always depreciates, chalk it up as a loss, or consider it a long term “rental” and move on.
In six months we will be having the same discussion about the a7rIII 🙂
P.S. I jokingly stated meantioned the kidney, liver, and stripper pole thing, becuase of the price. I think, as others do, it camera should Ship under $3000. But im willing to pay the extra $200 for what seems to be the best camera of 2015
Peace and Love
Can’t think of anything other than AF in pitch black and 15-20fps, maybe an integrated battery grip and more buttons?
Only thing that comes to mind is a built in grip, 4k @ 60 fps & 4k @ 120 fps, full articulating LCD, Full Res @ 10 fps, dual memory card slots, 3,200k dot OLED viewfinder… Really dont know qwhat else could be added.
Now thats the bee’s knees!!!
Look at dpreview, what Alpha dog is writing:
One of the most impressive features of the a7R II is its autofocus system. 399 phase-detection AF points ….PDAF will work even with third-party lenses via existing adapters, including in continuous AF tracking mode.
This is potentially a huge deal – especially for Canon users. We’ve used an a7R II with a Canon 24-70mm lens and a Metabones adapter, and focus is indeed very fast indeed. We’ll be looking at this in more depth as soon as we have a production sample camera, but for now, we’re highly impressed. Canon should expect some cancelled EOS 5DS orders…
Looks very impressive!
Totally agree about last phrase.
Canon 5DS and 5DS R were just for megapixels race. It was purely and only for megapixels to get the Canon users to keep noise and clap their hairy hands together yelling “Job well done” and claiming that crop format has entered to “medium format”.
Sony has again shown it belongs to same league as Olympus, Panasonic and Fuji with the innovation. When looking Canon 5DS samples, they are noisy, mushy and unrealistic colors. Resolution is big but would downscale the images to avoid Canon bad image quality and so on drop the quality on level from others.
But this Sony A7r II is great, not by image quality but the video. 1000fps in Full HD! BSI crop sensor (36x24mm has always been THE crop format) in first time and even “global shutter” (I don’t care what is the system they now use for it as long it now works, if they truly can read out so quickly row by row the pixels) and 4K without binning.
The Auto-Focus speed is already ridiculously fast on mirrorless cameras like on m4/3 system that you don’t really get better than on paper. But this time if Sony has managed to improve the tracking system (399 focus points is just a specs sheet, but can help to track subject as higher sampling to follow colors and shapes is better than fewer) it is huge benefit too, but it is all about software and not the sensor in this case as tracking is done with software image sampling.
Looking samples from Sony for stills and 4K, it isn’t as good as expected but still very very good.
Canon and Nikon are in problems and it was already seen when Olympus released OM-D line. Then Panasonic got the GH4 for video side and Sony had A7 that was the second nail to Canon/Nikon coffin and A7r + A7s just were polishing, “prototyping”.
And now it seems that Sony has released their “gen 2” Alpha line that is third nail to Canon/Nikon coffin.
Since E-M1 and A7 I have recommend to every Canon and Nikon user I know and most who I meet just to sell their Canon/Nikon gear while they can and invest to Sony or m4/3 system. As if they are happy with Canon and Nikon, they are more than happy with m4/3 and if they want more for studio work, it is the Sony.
If Canon wants to survive, it needs to start making lenses to others. It doesn’t have changes with 3-7 year body upgrade plans. But same thing is with Sony, it needs to slow down. Release new 2-3 bodies at once every 2-3 years. Not new body every year.
The wild card is now the Samsung. They made excellent start with NX1, truly amazing.
But the most waited models are now on Olympus, Panasonic and Fuji, as Panasonic and Fuji are developing the next gen sensor technology that should be out for next gen cameras. And it is interesting to see what those three can pack to their bodies in next year. They have lenses up (and above) Zeiss levels and clearly over Canon/Nikon. They have size and weight benefit and very innovative history and focus for still photographers and videographers.
The fact just is now that Canon and Nikon are clueless what to do. Nikon 1 is nice camera for traveler business man. Canon EOS M is nice camera for kids (yes, I said both of those). But the mirrorless benefits are not in size and weight alone. It is in technology that removing mirror makes possible.
Just looking what Olympus has done and now what Sony did shows that mirrorless is the future by all ways. The computer technology industry is the thing that will develop photographic possibilities, not the lenses or megapixels. It is about software and processing speed.
I might be little biased toward mirrorless, but I have invested now to m4/3 mostly, then to Sony and Fuji. Love almost all their products. In my work I handle all kind cameras for testing purposes and I am so excited to get my hands on this Sony baby.
This is very strange. There is way too large a gap between the A7II $1700 and the A7RII $3200. Both have FF, 5 Axis, is a 42MPX sensor and 4K video enough to justify a $1500 difference? I could imagine a $500-700 difference. But we will see how many Sony users will spend $3,200.
First sensor of it’s type .
internal 4K video
A7S + Atomos Shogun is more expensive
and the a7s alone is cheaper; so you have the “gap filler”….
The internal 4K of the A7RII has a data rate of 100Mbps, the ProRes 422 HQ I use in the Shogun is typically 700Mbps. Without diving into further discussions around different codecs, it should be quite clear that the A7S + Atomos will deliver far better IQ. But the A7RII will sure be a nice complement for run and gun 4K.
I don’t like ProRes 422 HQ. It has a very weak compression.
A7S records 1920×1080 XAV-S with (only) 50Mbps internal.
In terms of Mbps the Atomos should wipe the floor with A7S internal recoreder – but it does not:
https://vimeo.com/115931554
The trees in your link looks consistently better on the Shogun (left half) than the internal footage, which is to be expected. More data (generally) means better representation of fine details.
A7S internal 1080p is 50Mbps, the A7RII QFHD (4x the amount of pixels) is 100Mbps, go figure. I think the A7RII will make a nice minimal 4K set. But it will be no match for a bigger setup with A7S and the Shogun. We will see pretty soon.
I did not say A7Rii is better, but I expect it will be close – considering the huge difference of 700 to 100 MBps remarkably close (expect high ISO).
Can’t await to see reviews of the big sites!!
Unless there’s something better coming-up this year, I’m thinking this will be the camera most everyone will want.
That said, when the A99 was first released, I didn’t think twice about the price. Which incidentally was very close to this. And so I’m thinking this will be the same sort of deal.
A7R- consider it a beta. Different strategy moving forward it seems: Dominate.
BSI, the results will speak for themselves.
You left out important aspects: BSI(which means an improvement in low light as well as better compatibility with oblique angle entry light), improved AF, and “silent mode” which could mean a full electronic shutter.
HELL YES!!!!!!!
If it really is a quantum leap in cameras then expect the price to do the same. Lots of interest in the cam here and elsewhere probably translates to a higher price.
Great announcement from Sony…But, I will wait to pickup the A7RII’s sensor in the Nikon D900!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AM3Cveq2qzk
I’ve been saying it all along 🙂
But somehow, despite the potential to overcome the limitations, this will come across as a bad thing for some people.
No problem if old (screw drive) lenses work also… but I think sony has no interest in it.
There is one gem, as you say “old screw drive”, it is A-mount 135/1.8 Zeiss… i think that sony will have interest and if not than there is room for some third party adapter. 😉
Or mirrorless amount…
That is what I have been thinking and have sparked debates few weeks ago when my forum post was published here.
At what ISO does the A7S start to outperform this new camera (talking video, here?)
I mean, if you can survive without 51200, is there still any reason to buy the A7S? What advantages does the A7S retain over this? (I’m still sifting through the avalanche of info, so forgive me if I’m missing something obvious.)
A7s is cheaper
never thought that this could happen…..
A7sII will rectify that 🙂 .
Guarantee the a7sii will give you a bunch of reasons…
Just to clarify, it seems like the A7S is suddenly way overpriced; I might as well just get the new camera. I mean, looking at the specs and considering my needs, it’s like the camera to end all cameras.
Great job Sony on this one.
So is this the first full-frame BSI sensor? Last I’d heard, the largest BSI was a 4:3 sensor.
4:3 BSI? Where did you get this info?
The largest BSI sensor was Samsung 28MP APS-C sensor…
A-mount is…. sorry, Canon and Nikon are dead….
Canon just became world largest 3rd party lens manufacturer I guess~
Sony is fighting for market share, may be they won’t sell this sensor to Nikon this time
The real money is in sensor sales though, so you never know…
Id like to think that sony wouldn’t sell it to Nikon (at least not a while) but the sensor division has way more power within sony than the camera division.
I imagine Sony will keep it exclusive for a while, but there have been rumours Nikon plan to bring out a new hi-rez camera (a D900) at the end of this year. I don’t imagine it will be the same exact same sensor though, as I don’t see Sony wanting to share their focussing system.
Personally, I don’t expect Nikon to bring a new hi-rez camera to market until next year, but when they do I suspect it will have a Sony manufactured sensor in it.
Did you add the Quadcore I7? The hardware of the standard config is not so good…
My 2013 retina mbp handles A7II 24mp files very good in LRCC (LR6).
4 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4096 MB
1 TB Flash Drive
Is the drive an SSD or a hard drive? SSDs have big performance advantages with LR.
(Ps it just werks)
It’s an SSD.
I dunno why you are having these problems then, my PC handles the Pentax(Sony sensor) K3’s 24mp files pretty well in lightroom and its mostly lower specs. I’ve heard that Capture
One is faster.
i5 3570k @4.2ghz
8gb 2133 ddr3
256gb Samsung 840 pro
Seagate 2tb 7200rpm drive
Nvidia 670 overclocked
How long is ‘lags like hell’? One photo or a batch of how many? 8GB i7 64bit LR 6 24mp external drive no problem. Sound like you have a problem with your Mac.
Sony keep making some great camera bodies. But still they are lacking lenses. Not one decent 300,400,500,800mm which is why real photographers will never buy them. If they changed this, they’ll change the whole market and kill of Nikon and Canon
Real photographers? Who are they?? I want to see them pls?
No real photographer (-some press sports) need this lens. Do you mean old man shooting ugly pictures of birds?
Real photographers do need it. Welcome to go to different safaries around the world or landscape photography where you need those focal lengths. And those are even cheap ones when comparing that what kind huge income they will bring as rarely others have longer focal lengths.
500/4 being the goto lens of any self respecting landscape photographer…
Winner !
http://like-a-sony.c.blog.so-net.ne.jp/_images/blog/_047/like-a-sony/500mm_F4_G-71030.jpg
Lol…. how big is market for these lenses? They are useless for shooting weddings 🙂
Sony doesn’t need to make those lenses. Just put existing Nikon or Canon on.
This could be great for Canon lenses, but there isn’t any adapter on the market that allows a Sony to control a modern Nikon G lens’s aperture or AF, and I don’t see any manufacturer doing it, given the nature of the aperture coupling on F-mount.
I keep coming back to this launch!!! And wonder if this is the A9 that was rumored…or whether there is another monster coming soon in the for of the A9… only time will tell.
Anyone has any insights on this one?
that is a great camera from sony, and i hope they will won whole market
Good job Sony!!
Now please make sane sized 35/1.4
They can’t work contrary to the principles of science and how much light is needed for a full-frame sensor 35mm f1.4 lens…
You mean I can’t have my 24-135 f1.8 pancake?
Leica must live in a parallel universe then
Does Leica lens have modern AF drive?
You said it was because of the laws of science. Now it’s because there is an added af drive? lol. Keep trying dude.
But to answer your question – in the Q, Yes it does. It is the same size (actually smaller) as their 28mm 1.4 Manual focus M lens.
You were arguing with some other dude before.
Could you post a link to the lens you’re talking about?
a99II won’t have a mirror… but it will have screw drive, and big batts, and full articulation, and super stable lens mount, and instant removable VG, and joystick, and instant AF point selection, and full control set on VG… and more pros using it.
While I’m no expert on LR, looking at your specs the hardware isn’t the problem. It’s probably LR itself. Check if GPU acceleration is switched on, optimize your catalog and keep the size down.
I want this so bad but its way out of my budget. There are a bunch of lens coming out I would like to buy first. This camera is absolutely amazing to me based on the specs. I would so buy it if I can afford it.
Yep just too much. Guess I’ll go with sony A7ii.
I doubt that. Maybe it will show the same or just slightly improved low light performance as the A7r. I´d say that half a stop would be more than I expected.
The pricng seems a little crazy, $3.2k!! Wow!!!
Yes, it is too cheap to be true.
BSI FF, 4k video, 5 axis IBIS, 42MP sensor, 500k shutter life, silent shutter, etc
If it have a Canon band on it, it will charge you $4~5k
No $5500
And Now Canon and Nikon panic absolute no history. Canon and Nikon is dead! Sony soon announce A7SII with 12mp and BSI… We are approaching the holy grail that all fans photos and video calling! Well Sony, I’m really moved
Why I don’t see any bold claims about these new sensors image quality?
You mean that free isn’t free?
DW/A Photographer is the same person – looks like he is changing names. See discussion in http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr3-finally-some-a99-successor-rumor-coming-mid-september-and-has-4k-recording/ load all comments and search for “A third stop is a third stop is a third stop”
Unfortunately some of his comments are deleted now so reading is quite hard 🙂
1/3 or 1/2 stop
I have nothing official – just threads in forums. One said, Sony claims 1/3 stop and speaks about a 70% / 30% split of light. And the numbers does not match – because a loss of 30% is in fact 1/2 stop.
I am not sure – but I think 1/2 stop of light is missing at the sensor, but only 1/3 stop of light is used for AF-module. The rest is eaten by the mirror. (70% / 20%)
Nor do I. I read something about copper wiring and faster data transfer speeds and BSI. But not IQ. Hmmmm
People keep saying Sony has stolen Leica’s thunder from yesterday, but DP review just released the first review and in the studio comparison, the Leica Q is sharper than the a7r mk1. That’s pretty damn impressive.
So the A7r II will destroy the Q then? And for a grand less?
who know’s. I hope so.
I hope so
Here’s a nice photo taken with A7r and FE55. Especially if you like purple everywhere, even in the shadows. https://sonyvnikon.files.wordpress.com/2015/05/pro-setup-taken-with-amateur-camera.jpg
You’re lying again – https://sonyvnikon.wordpress.com/2015/06/06/sony-mirrorless-in-three-simple-graphics/
If you’re into video 11+7 isn’t an issue. But let’s see A – how long before sensor heats up and B. how little batter power lasts.
Sony just went nuclear on smug Nikon and Canon.
Looks like Canon just became the world largest 3rd party lens manufacturer~
There aren’t many Canon lenses I would buy anymore.
Im still going to get it but ill have to save up for awhile first. I dont see myself needung any other cameras after this unless they announce an ultra wide aperture rx2 camera
Anybody else have a feeling that the new A7S ii will occupy the first A7r pricing, and become the second most expensive unit in the A7 series mark ii refresh? I can’t see a new A7s with higher pricing, just doesn’t make sense! Specially with the low res sensor.
So, still no news on A61XX or A7XXX??
Hooray, 3 years later and it ticks off virtually everything I asked for. Thanks Sony!

I urgently need to purchase A7R II the week of July 13th for a trip I am making. Does know where I can buy one now in any county? Thanks!
