    1. now that would be interesting.
dont forget sony us also claimed 14 bit for other a7s, so let’s wait on this.
      However would be really nice.

  1. I guess the camera is expected to be quite popular if B&H doesn’t offer a free shipping for a pricey item. Also, the product pictures show the A7r, so do not complain if you get one for $3200 🙂

    1. If you look at the body, it’s actually the A7II chassis with the larger grip, so pictured is the A7R II…just without the II label. (Seriously design team, one job!)

  2. Does anyone know if I will see any improvement in image quality at ISO 3200-6400 if I trade in my Canon 5DIII for the Sony A7r? I shoot a lot of low light conferences and flash is a no-no.

    1. Hi Corey… I used to be a die hard Canon user and have used almost all of its DSLRs up until the 5D Mark III. I am also like you a non-flash person.

I have been using my Sony A7r for the past two years and have had no complaints so far. It works amazingly well and in my personal opinion (which is purely artistic, not a professional who uses focus charts), I prefer the A7r to the 5D Mark III.

You can see some of the images here – http://www.instagram.com/kausthub

        1. Hi Corey. I have shot quite a few images at ISO 6400 and its really quite good. I had not done the same with the 5D Mark III. So would not be able to compare.

But I think the A7r kind of peaks the quality at about ISO 6400. Beyond that it starts to get grainy…which is not really bad per se… depends on preference of the shooter. Some love the grain..others don’t.

    2. maybe you already have IS on your lenses, if not you ll gain 4 stop with ibis ( more or less). the a7r 3200-6400 isos is already good, but we ll have to wait to see this news sensor at work! WHat are your lenses right now?

      1. Hi Alcibiade, I have gone from the 5DII w/ 16-35 2.8 to the 5DIII w/ 16-35 4IS. What I have noticed is the slowest I can shoot without capturing motion blur (during conferences) is 1/160 even if I am able to hand hold at 1/30 with IS. Unfortunately, I need to shoot at 6400ISO to achieve this most of the time at f4. With the 16-35 f2.8 I would see motion blur and the pictures did not seem as sharp. I also use the Canon 70-200mm 2.8 II IS lens.

I’ve been looking at picking up an Olympus OMD1 with the new pro 7-14mm as well as the 75mm 1.8, or picking up an A7 series camera with the 16-35 and new Zeiss Batis 85mm 1.8, but I will miss my zoom (although hate how heavy it is). Out of those, I have been leaning towards the Sony A7s but might consider this new A7rII.

        1. well not easy cause you already have pretty damn good stuff, but i don’t think the a7s is really a good choice if you re not going after 6400, where he s really the king. maybe wait for review on a7r ii could be a good choice, we can expect cleaner shot with the new sensor and the new shutter.

  3. Sony’s marketing department is genius. Leica’s marketing team must be sweating!!! What a show Sony put up… Just hours after Leica announced its YQU… Sony swoops in with its thunderous announcement.

With Sony’s new A7R II monster, and a billion legacy lenses available for its “universal” E Mount… its a dream come true for so many.

    1. Leica users haven’t cared about image quality comparisons since the 60s. Just the red dot.

      1. Hmmmm being a former Leica user myself, I do care about image quality. And I still say Leica glass is unbeatable. But the cameras are a whole other thing. That’s why I love the Sony E Mount. Still allows me to use all that old M and R lenses to good effect.

        1. Most Leica glass is flawed to highly flawed. Anyone that says otherwise doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Distortion, flare, CA , smearing the list goes on and on.

Now some of these flaws are desirable at times and I still have 6 Leica lenses for those specific reasons but if you want the best glass, the choices are pretty narrow across the focal lengths

          21mm Distagon
          35mm Sigma
          55mm Otus
          85mm Otus
          135mm Otus
          200mm Nikon 2.0
          300mm Nikon 2.8
          400mm Nikon 2.8

And you said it yourself ‘former Leica user’ I think Leica last led IQ in the 50s early 60s.

          Leicas are plagued with problems.

          1. I certainly don’t agree with your comments here. Leica lenses have been amazing for many photographers…myself included. Plus the list you have put out seems so strange. You really think Sigma 35mm is better than the Leica Summilux or Zeiss Distagon 35mm!!! Then you must not know what you are talking about. And the Nikon telephotos!!! Gosh you must joking.

It sounds like you are complaining for no apparently good reason.

  4. The price is a big surprise, it doubles up!! I was like gotta sell the 7s to get the 7r2, but it is done

  5. With the release of such a A7R II, do you think Sony can release a higher end camera called A9x and at what price? Maybe that’s the so wanted A9x. …

  6. Price is Joke, I don’t really think photo guys will be super exited about more pixels or in body IS i. Exchange of worst ISO performance, Video guys like me will be waiting for the a7sII instead to avoid moire and alliasing (caused for line skipping) . I can’t see this camera beeen super popular at this price.

  7. Great cameras.

    Pity about the price.

Apparently running with their most recent numbers, Sony suddenly believes it has pricing power in the market. It does not. The denouement of this sticker price over the next few months will be breathtaking, even embarassing. Just my opinion.
