The RX100m4 is a hell of a nice camera and it’s packed with lot of great features. Here is a short highlight on some of them:
1) It’s the world’s first memory-attached 1.0-type stacked CMOS sensor

2) up to 40x super slow motion (movie recording of up to 960fps)
3) super-high-speed 1/32000 sec

4) Anti Distortion shutter:

5) 16 fps

6) 4K recording

Is that 1080p at 960 or what?
what about low light shooting/hi iso? That’s something I’d like to see improved.
Actually seems like some really worthwhile upgrades. Not for me (I still use the Mark I, which is fine for my needs), but much more than enough to maintain the RX-100 series as the best pocket camera. I am kind of glad they didn’t go for the 4/3 sensor, as that would probably make it too large.
Home run 🙂
Well done Sony. Whats next….
We might just see this type of sensor in the A7S markll.
Heard anything about the a7000 / a6100 ?
Why always this question? If anything is heard it is posted. No need to ask everytime for every other expected product in a product announcement or rumour article!
My apologies friend,
I was just curious as to whether Sony would shove it aside for now seeing as they released a relatively solid lineup.
If their prices go up like with this new babies, a A7000 will cost more than a A7.
All great features for video, but how about people shooting stills (non-highspeed)?
They still get less rolling shutter and higher fps count.
Now it will be the time retiring my aged RX100M1.
Haven’t found it anywhere…
I think they SHOULD also release E-mount with such sensor, even it’s only 1″ because it’s unlikely they’ll made such APS-C sensor soon.
Who knows, what we saw today for a7rii was beyond expectations.
oh pardon, i hadn’t discovered that yet.
I don’t know why they didn’t release such camera yet… it could be a tele- (2.7x crop ultrafast AF, maybe dedicated tele lens with equivalent e.g. over 500mm) or macromonster (bigger DOF) 😉
With the same E-mount lens a smaller sensor has not nigger DOF (neither is better for macro). Sensor size does not change DOF directly, only the aperture and the distance to your object does.
I was just about to say same thing.
You won’t need A7S anymore since BSI got to FF sensors.
why not, a 16mp BSI sensor can deliver the same ISO range of A7s.videographers love the low light imaging of A7s-which is much more than A7rii can handle . 12mp is a bit small for photographers,16mp will be just fine(m43 shooters)
BSI isn’t that much of an improvement. The RX100 II got it, and it was barely noticeable over the original. And it would make a much, much bigger impact on a 1″ sensor than a full frame one.
Do you remember all these conversative f***ts who used to say BSI has no use on larger sensors?
yea, I remember them. They are called Sony representatives. They frequently have said that BSI has less effect on larger sensors. It is a PR stunt to include it on FF.
Maybe with knowledge and technology back then it was true!? Tech changes, don’t be so smartass.
conversative? I would say ignorant armchair scientists. But f***ts is true. LOL
Too bad they did not add a mic input and bring back the hot shoe mount. If they did, the it would have been tempting, especially for video.
But the RX10-II can do all that :).
This will be 960fps at 1080p, when you watch the clips on youtube. There you can chooses the maximum resolution.
I personally think this camera will be the break through for video filming (especially because of the high slow motion modes). Now also all other camera producer, has to deliver at least the same specs. The GH4 was capable of doing high slow motion at 1080p, but they not enabled it..
So from now on they cannot release a new camera with recording only 96fps at 1080p
I agree, you don’t need to be a pro either since there are many vloggers on youtube that are going to love this camera.
1136×384 in quality priority mode and 800×270 in shoot time priority mode
Am I the only one underwhelmed here?
4K recording for FIVE minutes long…? Seriously?
The fast speed shooting and processing is all fine (on paper still – we have to see evidence of all of that) but I’m not sure that that is a feature rx100 owners need.
Also the slomo is a nice thing to have I suppose, but at what resolutions?
The thing is that if they’re not telling us now at which resolution, it’s probably going to suck.
I see little to no reason to choose this over the mark 3.
Yep, you are the only one.
5 minutes is a joke….. 100% agreed
Looking at the sample video, resolution of the 960/1000fps slow motion appears to be 480p.
960 fps is at 1080
From Sony site –
Sensor Readout Number of effective pixels in Quality Priority mode –
240fps/250fps (1824 x 1026)
480fps/500fps (1676 x 566)
960fps/1000fps (1136 x 384)
if it’s due to the lack of heat dispersion in a small camera, I can still accept. if it’s due to firmware limitation to differentiate products, I’m going be very angry

I’ll stick with my Mk3…..not enough here to tempt me to upgrade
how long can the 1000fps clips be?
This new rx100m4 sure is one innovative camera !
I would like that stacked superspeed sensor in my Leica D-Lux typ 109 !
Problem seems we can’t have it all … a state-of-the-art sony sensor like this in a camera with handling like the Leica 109. That new 2.x OLED EVF also seems a must have and might better my LCD sequential 2.76 MP EVF. Can’t have it all, can’t have it all 🙂
IMHO 5 minutes of video clip is more than sufficient for most video shooters (like me). I sure wouldn’t want to watch work from people taking video clips with a length of more than even 30 seconds or so ! (unless of course video is used for dedicated ‘special’ events, in which case I would use a dedicated video camera anyway)
Dont think there are any video cameras under $2k that can offer 4k recording, 960 fps @ 1080, and have a 24-200 f2.8 lens with Zeiss coating. Oh, it can also double up as a bad ass camera with 1/32000 shutter and 16 fps. The 100m4 is amazing for Pocket size but id go with the 10m2. Thats after I get my a7r2 though (anyone interested in a a7m2?)
Seems like the eliminated most of the differences between the rx100 and the rx10. The only material differences are the size of the camera and the range of the lens (although the rx 100 has a lower aperture).
4k recording is limited to 5 min on 100 and 29 min on 10. Plus, having the extra zoom is a huge win when doing video (hot shoe comes handy too)
RX10 also has the better AF system and focuses faster both in tracking and in single subject acquisition. The hot shoe gives it XLR potential with the XLR-K2M as well plus more buttons to customize. Separate, De-clicked aperture ring is another lovely feature, as is the magnesium weatherproof body. I have put my RX10 through madness from 110 in Moab, to -40 in Sheridan, WY and it never failed me once. That’s worth a great deal.
All in all they’re both amazing but the RX10II has some lovely extras that take it another level.
Plus you can use an addon or even a remote flash with the RX10, e.g. in a studio. That was only possible with the RX100-II in the RX100 line.
Thanks guys. Realized I’m an idiot, I was thinking about the RX 1 not the RX 10 when I made my first comment.
Still makes no sense. 😛
I was thinking – holy cow they really closed the gap and eliminated the reason to get the RX 1 – which of course they didn’t.
The difference between 12 and 16mp is only a few hundred pixels horizontically and vertically. It does not matter at all in my opinion for cropping.
If the high iso was good, I’d use this for sports. But I’m guessing it’s a daytime camera.
I would prefer at least 10 minutes… but that’s just me I guess
5 mins is fine when you take 5 mins of one scene then 5 mins of another. 300 seconds is a lot of continuous video in my book.
