Reminder: Sony will actually have their press conference on February 13 at 11:30 Tokyo time. Hiroki Nagahama from Sony will talk for 45minutes and the title of his speech is: “The world of super-high sensitivity of α7s, and the technology of supporting it”. He will also introduce the new FE lenses.

Is there any chance of any surprises, or have you received a date when the next FE mirrorless camera will be announced?
I am at last starting to get some more reliable info. So far only 5% chance of surprises. But I just got rumros about an AFTER Cp+ announcement. I mean, you would only have to wait few weeks 😉
For the announcement or the rumors ?
A few weeks has to be less than a month right ? Right admin ? ? ? 😉
Okay so it will be mid to late March pre the next big trade show 🙂
I don’t know if my plastic a7R lens mount will last that long… a few weeks? Dang thing’s about to fall off. Need all metal mount high MP NOW!… You know, like the competition has for years now.
My Plastik one survived an Oman Trip 3 Weeks and nearly 1,5 Years of usage
I used my A57 with plastic mount for 3 years and i still using it quite often.
The mount is long lasting for normal usage.
good one
you can afford a $2300 camera but can’t afford a $40 replacement part (by Fotodiox)?
Apparently you can buy the A7S mount replacement part. I’d take that route over the Fotodiox.
yawn…
and that rumor would be…
Do tell.
only a bunch of overpriced lenses? how cool.. seriously, this might be the most boring press conference from sony.
Overpriced because you cant buy them?
can you?
Yes, I have all of them.
I have 3 of each of them, just because I’m rich and like to buy stuff. I don’t have a E-Mount camera.
Yes and no: I could buy them, but I just don’t think they are worth it. Don’t get me wrong, I am sure those are terrific lenses, but for me and probably most other people visiting this site, those lenses just don’t pay off for amateurs.
Can you please list all the cheap lenses that for example Canon have announced so far at the event?
How do you define “overpriced”? I want sharp well-performing lenses with some degree of weather sealing not cheap crap.
How does the term “well performing” fit with the term “fly-by-wire” focusing?
Voigtlander… Samyang… Please save us all!
Overpriced because: Designed for full frame, thus too expensive for APS-C. Come on, 1k$ for a lens? Well if you are a professional photographer then that might be ok, but for me it is way too expensive. You can get decent lenses from other manufacturers for around 500 bucks.
if you can’t afford to play the full frame game, then go back to APS-C or MFT
No need to go back, I never went full frame 😉
The thing is Sony seems to stop working on APS-C E-Mount lenses, so I have to buy expensive FE lenses from now on or what?
Oh boy I can’t wait to not buy the most discombobulated lens lineup in history.
Thank you Samyang for creating a great consistent lineup for genuine A-Mount that I can use on a99 with waist level vertical shooting. Try THAT with your fly-wire wobbly miniature tow-E-zzzz!
The same Samyang lenses can also be used on the E-mount.
And by the way, the upcoming lenses are pretty normal system lenses apart from maybe the 28 f2 with its adapters, which basically provides 3 focal lenghts in one prime.
why is it so hard for sony to make a constant f/2.8 e-mount zoom lens like any other brand? heck even god damn samsung has it as a lens kit
Because they’d be huge, and fat, and so heavy they’d snap off the little mount after the mocking laughter of carpel tunnel inducing poor ergonomics subsided.
i’m aware of that problem as many other nex, a5000, a5100, a6000 users are forced to slap an adapter to get f/2.8 within 16-50mm /17-55mm range
That’s just it, though. The 2.8 FE lenses would most likely be weighted and sized similar to that of the A-mount lenses (with or without the adapter, I couldn’t say). That being said, this seems kind of redundant.
You forget that Sony also has an A-mount on which it provides such lenses. If you want f/2.8 zooms in Sony land without adapter, you’ll need to buy an A-mount camera.
Companies like Samsung only have one mount and they have to have all the lenses there.
Because constant aperture F2.8 FF Zoom Lens will be large & heavy.
You will want a larger body to get good balance, that is a-mount body.
In a-mount, you got many constant aperture F2.8 FF/Apsc Zoom Lens to choose.
If you don’t mind small camera with big lens, you can always get an e-a adapter
Samsung isn’t full frame…..Seriously dude wake up….
i’m comparing this to X (fuji), and S (samsung) which is a crop mirrorless and has the lens
yeah morons- listen to Gayvin – this queer knows what he’s talking about – he likes to view his bf pounding him biting the pillow in full frame. duh.
Because they would be large and heavy, particularly with that mount, which is the wrong size.
I see no A7000 this time..Admin…? Tnx
Yes right with the a-mount but the Innovation System is the e- mount. A 85 mm normal portrait Tele lense with 1.4/1.8/2.0 waiting for Ages. And hopefully the A9 or what the Name of a pro Body is coming Soon too. And a speedlight with no overheating Problems like the hvl-60.I have A7,A7r,A6000..
you obviously missed the hvl-42…and aspecially the hvl-32 which is a great match for the mirrorless lineup
not enough power for wedding photography and shooting with modifiers hvl-42. Cant stich an external power into HVL-42 or hvl-32. I have an HVL-20 which is okay for little fill in but not for pro working. I need external power supply and a guidenumber of 58-60.
Not a little speedlight.
fair enough..it was not clear from your original post. Anyway, I normally find the 42 to be sufficient for event photography. Still, I get your point now
availability when for the 28 & 35?
Can’t you read ? Annoucement on the 13th, we are not mind readers so you will have to wait for the 13th, like everyone else.
thx read, you are so cool and so refreshing – I can not read, just take photos, sorry …
I hope your photography skills are better than your reading skills…
enjoy 😉

I found the rabbit in my hat, but the crystall ball is missing, sorry no fortune telling this time.
So – no real news to expect. (Besides availability dates.) I which Sony looked at Fujifilm as THE benchmark of lens development. They do the right lenses AND keep users informed via continuously updated lens road maps.
Sony on the other hand seems not really know and understand the way forward. It rather shoots from the hip, see market reactions and tries something else if the response is negative. This is a very slow, expensive and inefficient way to develop. I bet that Fuji gets a lot more done with a lot less resources than Sony.
so, Sony will be making announcement on new lenses and cry babies like you are still whining? I swear, the biggest whiners are on this page
+1,000,000
I would not bash sony too hard for this, they obviously pospone the big announcements after big shows…
…perhaps atleast the new part of the lens roadmap will get revealed
To be fair the e-mount road map has been regularly updated. Given the number of new lenses coming in February/March, it’s a safe bet that we’ll see a new road map.
Fuji have only just added a 24-70mm and 70-200mm, FE had these on launch. UWA and within 8 months, 35mm and ~50mm right off the bat, same with a kit lens. They have a macro coming in the next couple of days, Fuji have one slated for next year. Sony have added to the roadmap every couple of months as new lenses are released. Fuji’s ‘magic’ release schedule has been FAR slower than Sony’s. Fuji can bite me.
THIS! I wish we could put this in every comment box as a disclaimer to those complaining about the lens roadmap. Sony has been hitting the crucial lenses and has made great headway in less than two years… 16-35, 24-70, 70-200, 35 prime, 55 prime, 90 macro; these are all the heavy hitters. Once they staples are out, THEN they’ll look at releasing the specialty primes.
maybe sony have problems with the realization of the new 50MP DSLR/MILC? Or they want to surprise all!! Let’s do hope …
They usually avoid launching new bodies at these events. My guess is we’ll see the a7rii once the dust has settled.
This image spells one of the main issues with these cameras: the 35mm is a Distagon (retrofocus, huge) and not a Biogon (small). These are the consequences of design errors, like that mount, which was designed for APS-C in the first place. Let’s see how long Sony sticks to this flawed design.
Sony has stated that e-mount was designed for full frame from its inception. If you bothered to do your research you would know that…
If you had something else than sawdust in there, you would know better than trust corporate statements. You would even know some basics of optics.
I’m sure you are about to share your optical expertise and tell us all why E-mount wasn’t designed for FF, right?
Do people really believe that the Sony engineers sat around a desk and didn’t mention FF once during the design phase? If people spout this kind of rubbish often enough, it seems to become true in Internetland.
“In Greek mythology the LOTUS-EATERS were a race of people living on an island near North Africa dominated by lotus plants. The lotus fruits and flowers
were the primary food of the island and were NARCOTIC, causing the people to
sleep in peaceful apathy.”
So, judging by your username, it seems you are admitting to be a JUNKIE.
Are you indeed?
No.
Are you a plain clothed policeman?
Hahahaha best post ever !
with a length of approximately 12cm the 90mm macro is the longest. not that huge in my opinion…
First, you imply that a “large” lens is a flawed design. I do not see the relation between both, can you clarify how a characteristic is linked to a design issue on your opinion ?
Also, could you explain how Biogon would be a better lens design ? Would not the ray of light be too oblic in the corner creating issue on the corner as can be seen with some Leica wide angle on the Sony A7 ? Could you share your knowledge ?
Last point, you say the 35mm f/1,4 is huge. Could you please share with us a comparison between the Zeiss and Canon 35ll f/1,4 size ?
I don’t understand the strategy regrding the lens line-up.IMO they need first high IQ primes covering 21mm (at lest) to 200mm. These don’t have to be fast to keep them rather small (but need to ensure high IQ). Theoretically, Sony covered 16-200 with three zooms. The issue: The 24-70 and the 16-35 do not deliver what they should on these really nice cameras. And when Sony comes up with even high MP counts the weakness of these lenses will even more obvious. I really like the idea of a A7rII or A9 with about 50 MP. But without the right lenses for me there is no point in switching to Sony. Canon on the other hand has the nice lenses but their sensor seems still to suck …
Your mistake is assuming they have a strategy. If you assume that there is no strategy, then it all makes sense!
Got it. Now I understand …
Right. No man would create a trillion versions of 35-mm-primes if everything else in his lens lineup is missing or lacks proper quality.
There’s only two sony zeiss 35mm lenses… They have completely different apertures
35mm autofocus 2.8 sony zeiss
35mm autofocus 1.4 sony zeiss
35mm manual focus 2 loxia zeiss (sony has nothing to do with this lens).
Of course you know better than a multi billion dollar company
Because everyone who needed a 35mm prime and brought the 35/2.8 is now trashing it and running for the 35/1.4? Because f/1.4 on a FF wide angle lens is a must?
Three absolutely excellent lenses on a single mount which only has 35mm and two 50mm primes + some crappy zooms so far, is way too much. Don’t you think so? Maybe a nice 35/2 for you? A sharp 50/1.4 ZA? A special 32/1.8, huh? … NOOOO.
20,24,35,50,85,135 and the macro 90mm thats a prime line for me. okay we are on the way with : 35 mm 2.8 or 1.4, 55 mm, no pancake would be cool :((, and no 85 mm actually and a 90mm macro and no 135 mmm.
So a 85 mm Portrait, medium Tele Lense is a must coming lense!
I own the 16-35 and I’m perfectly happy with it, it’s very sharp !
The reviews I’ve read (slrgear.com, photozone.de) come to the conclusion that the borders are rather soft and the iq doesn’t live up expactations and price point. I wouldn’t trust only one review but since there are more stating the same it’s hard to believe that the Sony/zeiss can compete with the Canon or Nikon 16-35 …
Neither Photozone nor SLRGear have reviewed the 16-35.
My bad. You’re right. They tested the 24-70. Dxomark and digitalkamera.de (German) tested the 16-35. However, given he price, the Zeiss branding and the meaning of these lenses for a new system they should have been way better … at least to convince me to invest in this system.
I own the 16-35 as well and while I haven’t tested it against a lab sheet (I prefer to real world test), it produces pretty fantastic images for a wide to ultrawide. Do I wish it was cheaper and f2.8? Sure, but it’s still one heck of a lens.
No need to defend a buy. There are certainly a lot of people who are perfectly happy with this lens or with the 28-70 or with these 18-55mm kit lenses Canikon provide. Ever compared the 16-35 in real world with teh 35 or 55?
I bought both the 35 2.8 and 16-35 4, but returned the prime. I didn’t see any substantial loss to corner sharpness or softness when comparing the two. While the prime was slightly sharper, unless you’ve cropped it to 100% and are comparing your image to another shot in the same spot, you’re not going to see a difference. The utility of being able to 16mm made it a no brainer. I was actually very impressed with the way the lens handled 16mm at f/4 (and all the way through its range for that matter). I didn’t get a chance to compare it to the 55m “prime poster boy”, but I’m not sure you can compare the two since they’re two entirely different beasts.
Then comes the Metabones Smart adapter to save you even if AF will be slow with Canon EF lenses
You’re right. Same with their APS-C lens lineup (the one that was most sold last year): a complete lack of (high) quality zoom-lenses. But the prime’s lineup also misses a lot of spots. There’s a very good 24/1.8, a 35/1.8 and a 50/1.8. That’s it. For now, primes are the best compromise between size and image quality. The funny (or sad) thing is: Zeiss and Sony/Minolta already had small and good quality FF primes back in the 70ies/80ies. It should be rather easy to quickly fill the lens lineup’s gaps.
Let’s have a sitting in front of Sony exhibition stand and request new camera release at CP+
It’ll be some guy that has no hands on experience with the products as well. Put an engineer up there and I’ll get excited.Another exec. stroking his manhood in a white color shirt with the first two buttons undone cause he’s so modern….no thanks.
Seriously? Some guy in a suit giving a 45-minute speech? What have we done to deserve that?
11h30???? Only 30min before lunch time ? Means Sony has poor to show… Shame of them., they better stay home
Now that Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have made a deal that will bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, how will this affect Sony’s future plans for the A-mount?
That’s a good question….
Maybe we can expect an A-mount ride at Disney… or at least a kiosk…
A-mount doesn’t exist in the MCU, since they haven’t mentioned it in any of the movies so far. So if Sony now will be drawn into the MCU, because of Spider-Man, then I guess A-mount will cease to exist.
There was an a-mount camera in the Amazing Spiderman 2 movie though!!! LOL
It was the A100!
I hope it’s as massive as these lenses are.
I wonder how many Sony users really don’t want a mirrorless- yet, they bought one because A mount is stagnant. Now, given these big lenses it makes you feel:
1) Ripped off
2) Suckered into yet another system
3) An outsider (No native ART or OTUS lenses)
4) Inadequate for anything other than shooting stills in your backyard
Yet you continue to use it because you say to yourself:
1) Meh, this isn’t all that bad. I mean, 13.3 stops of DR- can’t give that up.
2) Dang, well…it is pretty light
3) Iook at all these awesome all metal manual focus lenses- I’m going retro.
4) Well, at least Sony won’t axe this line for another few years. Can you say insurance?
Yet, back in the deep recess of your mind your really saying to yourself:
1) Man, that a900 and 135mm 1.8 felt so much tighter.
2) I so wish this was an A77II with blazing speed- do I really need FF? Nah….meh…eh??
3) A99II…slimmed down…say D750 style? I only wish.
4) These retro lenses…there still just retro. Hope no one asks me to do paid work with these things.
5) Can’t sell A mount glass, can’t sell, can’t sell…won’t let Sony win. MUST SELL–SHITTT.
Ah, the life of a Sony shooter.
Hey guys, don’t despair…this is Sony. I’m waiting for the return of AIBO 🙂
I really wanted an AIBO, now that I can afford one, I REALLY want a new one.
AIBO M2
“your really saying to yourself”
Actually, I was saying to myself “wow, he cannot differentiate between ‘your’ and ‘you’re’ or ‘there’ and ‘they’re’, lol”
Sony cameras are smaller and this gets a better, more natural pose off of the many subjects in street photography.
For studio work, hasselblads are better. I’ve owned canon, with multiple lenses, and I have a bank balance suitable to pay for all three mentioned, plus nikon. I simply do not have a need for canon or nikon.
I’d consider leica before canon but quite frankly, they’re not that good (I use leica lenses though which is something I struggle to do on canon and nikon dslrs).
“Ah, the life of a Sony shooter.”
Ah the life of someone who thinks you should only stick with one brand
First off, I don’t appreciate you pointing out the fact that my spelling sucks. I’m perfectly capable of humiliating myself- thank you very much. Secondly, I own 5 systems. I do not have one complete system. After having it I started selling parts of it off. Why? Because like I said or maybe I didn’t say…I’m an idiot who suffers from GAS. Now, back to eating cheerios and drinking wine. Have a good day sir.
“I’m an idiot”
You didn’t need to write the other nonsense
Thanks, I’ll remember that for next time. Cheers.
Don’t worry… Actually I’m an idiot too… 🙂
This isn’t a press conference.
It’s technology assembly.
A theme is “A7S – High sensitivity technology”.
