New FE lenses: What lens will you buy?

[shoplink 32983 ebay]FElenses[/shoplink]

On Friday (February 13 at 11:30 Tokyo time) Sony will present the new FE lenses and converters at their CP+ speech. I attached the rumored price info for each lens and converter and the questions is:

Note: The percentage shows how many of the voters selected a specific lens. Obviously because you can choose multiple lenses the sum of the percentages is well over 100% 🙂

  1. For me the Macro and 35/1.4 if it renders as beautiful as 55/1.8 and is sharp into the corners stopped down (which should be the case in a retrofocus design). It will be my standard walk around lens. 55mm is sometimes too long.

  2. The 90mm macro and the 28mm are almost definitely getting a home. I’m highly interested in the 35mm 1.4. I’ll have to see what I think of my 35mm 2.8 once I really get using it.

I’m pretty excited. I have an a7ii with the 35 and the 55 coming today. I order the battery grip too, but that some Friday. I called Sony and they gave me a $300 discount on the accessories, so that stopped my wavering.

      1. I was pretty surprised. I used the chat link to ask what screen protector works with the a7ii. He then asked if I already have one. I told him its in the cart with the 35 and the 55 lenses. He said he can get me $255 in accessories. I already applied a 15% promo code and I got the $255 on top of that, giving me a little over $300 off. I was totally sold and made the purchase using the 0% financing deal. If I could attach a screen shot here, I’d share the invoice showing the discount.

        1. I’m guessing this is a US thing; I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Chat Link in the Sony.ca site, let alone promocodes!

    1. 90mm is a pretty poor focal length for a macro. It’s decent if you use it for portraits and other things, but for actual macro usage like photographing insects, it’s pretty useless.

If you’re a casual user in a restaurant or something, 90mm is probably too long for food photography. I mention the casual user, because the non casual is typically going to want a longer focal length for macro.

In my opinion they should have made a 135mm macro

  3. You know what is sad?
That Canon/Nikon/Pentax/Sigma actually announced *new* products.
SONY will just make previously announced lenses available.
Either that, or SAR is in the dark again.

    1. I hope for you I am wrong. But I fear I am not 🙁

P.S.: I know I leaked the A7II and A7s only 2-3 days before their announcement. But now we have only 1-2 days left and still nothing…

      1. Do surprises ever happen? This is not me being sarcastic. I’m new to sony. I don’t know if they’ve ever kept a product completely silent and then announced it at a show? It’d be cool if so

  4. I’m looking at the 90mm and the 28 with adapters… that is, provided that the image quality of the latter can hold its own.

  5. I’m looking at the 90mm but at 28 mm price 😉 or Sony A7000 with new FF version of LA-EAxx ( a77 ii AF alike) to use Sony A lenses efficiently 😉

  6. I’ll either buy the 28/2 and the wide angle converter and simply glue them together or I’ll skip that one too and use the FE 16-35/4 all the time.

  7. Most Sony shooters are Amateurs who just use a KIT LENS.
Or they have plenty of other glas they use via Adapter.
No wonder such a high percentage will buy none of these lenses.

    1. You never know. If the reviews and the IQ of the lenses are good…they will sell like hot cakes. It’s not too late to buy later than be sorry.

      1. Well he probably does the same most of us do. I do it that way, I have all but 2 Sony e-lenses, the kit lens and the 16 mm pancake. All others are hybrid, most Minolta, Nikon, Olympus, and some c-mounts too.

      2. Look at most events where there’s lots of cameras or look at the top rated photographs on a photograph site or question local wedding photographers in your area if you’re interested in seeing who uses what

    2. who tricked you into believing this site is a reliable source for how sony customers all over the world think?

  8. Will Sony prepare a snack during their presentation to compensate the lack of announcement with only FE lenses to feed the visitors at break time ?

      1. 🙁 i could expect a large buffet lunch and be able to test the lenses :p… ok i’m jealous, i would love to see such show one day :p

        1. Would be great if some SAR readers will go to some photography events in the future, they can share their experiences and photography there or on SAR Forum if not yet 😉

          1. I’ve found most photography events to be painful. They’re geared towards impressing “soccer moms” as the americans would say

  9. Get this done and then Sony can do something for E-mount APS-C. The A6000 was their largest selling camera last year. There’re still a lot of NEX-users out there. What should those users buy?

I noticed, in the foreseeable future, e-mount won’t be good for quality zoom-lenses. Primes are the best compromise between size and quality. My A6000 pair great with the 35/1.8 and the 24/1.8Z. But I’d like something at the long end for portraits. But the 90/2.8 G OSS looks huge in the image above. And expensive. A good 85/2.8 OSS APS-C none G for half the price would be great. So long, the 85/2.8 SAM for only 200 € looks like the better option for my A77. And maybe the E50/1.8 for the A6000.

    1. E50/1.8 is very nice but vignetting at full aperture ( it ‘s nice for outdoor and with great light for portrait but quite annoying for other kind of pictures)

      1. Why it’s annoying? Because of vignetting? I haven’t read of heavy vignetting with this lens at all. But for me, the step from 35 to 50 mm is too small. 85mm would be more visible and could act as a small tele-lens replacement – because I don’t have any other long lens.

        1. because it isn’t really from 35 to 50. the 35/1.8 has real FL = 38mm and pincunsion distortion so it renders as it was longer FL.

  10. Wouldn’t let me vote “buy none of them”
Got myself a Sigma 105mm 3 months ago since too long of a wait for the FE 90mm
I’ll wait to see what new body Sony has to offer before buying anymore lenses which might deem useless for new high res body.

          1. True! To be fair, they’ve got us over a barrel – not many native FE macros with oss out there…

  11. If I didn’t have the fabulous Voigtlander 35mm f1.2 I would be lusting after the Zeiss 35. I might still be tempted one day, but for now I’m good. Still need a wide angle prime and a medium telephoto, but for now my a mount lenses will pull double duty. Hopefully we hear something soon regarding a wide angle prime, maybe a 21 or 24mm Loxia? A nice compact and fast 85-90mm would round out my EF mount kit…

    1. At Photokina I had a chat with a Zeiss guy while playing with the Loxia 35 and 50 on my A7R.
I mentioned that three other Loxia are rumored to be leleased by the end of 2015.
He confirmed that this is the plan. Of course he didn’t say a word of what fl the lenses would be.
When I “thought loudly” that besides a macro and a tele prime I would expect a wide angle (18 or 21) he just said – “You are seemingly looking into the right direction”.
      Let’s hope.

There has been rumored a 25/2 Sony Zeiss, but for my taste not wide enough unfortunately.

  12. Future buyers of the 90mm Macro, can you tell me what makes you buy it, instead of going for the good old 100mm f/2.8 A-mount or even 50mm f/2.8 Macro (if it is just about macro) with an LA-EA adapter.. Just curious. Personally I have an Olympus OM 90mm f/2 and Leica 60mm f/2.8 and very happy with both of them and both together are still cheaper than the new 90mm AF (although comparing used to new lenses isn’t fair, I know).

      1. OK, thanks all for the replies! So let’s hope the new 90mm becomes one of the sharpest lenses in the Sony staple (which it should for a macro) and well worth the addition.. Otherwise the 100mm doesn’t seem so bad actually (and at least in the Minolta form quite cheap actually).

    1. 90mm macro is a macro staple lens….for ff it allows enough subject working distance…that 60mm does not.
If you are using a good 100mm there is very little differrence..some E mount users may want a native E mount version, and this is a must have lens to privide a decent E mount range of lenses.
We would also hope …being a newer desighn…that Sony would make better optical quaility than older desighns and improved resolution and sharpness.
I have a full range of macro lenses…but if this lens were sharper than what I have, and if I were to get an E mount camera this would be a must have for me.

        1. I agree 180mm macro is a very usefull lens….and I use mine a lot..
For many applications..such as reptile houses at zoos, insect photography, flower photography etc the 90mm is more usefull.
In terms of sales I am certain the 90mm will outsell the 180.
Personally I wold like to also have even longer macros too such as 300mm.
Z shift would allow closer focusing on all lenses…and while not the same as a true macro it would make life in the field a lot easier.

    2. If one intends to use the lens for portrait sessions too, E mount will mostly be a better choice since you won’t be stuck with tiny AF points crummed in the center (LA-EA). On the other hand, SAM-85/2.8 is much cheaper than this 90mm lens (if the rumored price turns out to be right) and it’s quite a good lens for shooting portraits.

    3. Faster AF and an all IF.

When mainly working on A-mount I was looking for a 90-105mm macro. The Sony macro is a very solid one, but it is unbelievably slow and loud. The Sigma 105 was also slow, and the AF was kind of hit and miss. The former Tamron 90 was terrible, too. Last year I bought the new Tamron 90 USD version. It’s quite fast but the focus ring is annoying, much too smooth-running and also wobbling. This Tamron is an all IF btw., whereas the others not. The latter makes me consider buying the new G macro.

Shorter than 90mm makes for me no sense, quite the opposite I was additionally using one of Sigmas master pieces – the 150/2.8 macro.

          1. No for obvious reasons…

A tele prime with auto-focus, will focus faster than a macro due to the macros focus throw and low gearing. Look how long it takes the 100L to focus compared to a 70-200L for example. Even though they both have the same motor and the 100L has a limiter, and the 70-200 is a zoom lens, the 70-200 is still far faster.

A tele prime typically has a wider aperture because macros don’t need super wide apertures (ever tried to photograph an insect at f2.8?)

So you either compromise your lens choice and try to have a “jack of all trade lens” that is actually master of none or you pick the right tool for the job. I prefer to use the right tool for the job

          2. It seems that you have special knowledge of photography. Kudos!

What I don’t like is second-guessing all the time without considering that not all other people are just underskilled nerds.

Right tools for the job? I agree, and I do own them. But for me photography is just a hobby. I am taking it serious, but I don’t gonna die for.

Tele prime. For example when I am visiting with my family our “Insel Mainau” or a botanical garden, and have my macro attached I don’t change my lens for every shot, so it comes to the situation where I use the macro lens as a tele prime.

          3. As long as you’ve got a focus limiter, it’s doable. Certainly it was with my 70/2.8. Sure, it’s not as fast as a dedicated short tele prime, but it was comparable to the 85/2.8.

  13. These lenses look great and should perform well, but it’s tough to watch Fuji announce and release one excellent, compact, fast prime after another. I know the larger sensor will always make that tough, but I had hoped that there was going to be a sort of middle ground. It seems we can either get f2.0/2.8 lenses that are sort of compact, or 1.4 lenses that are giant.

    1. I love/hate how Fuji announced and releases lenses which are at least one stop faster than what we have while still being smaller in size. That one extra stop usually makes up for the APS-C vs 35mm DOF differences and since it gathers in an extra stop of light, the ISO performance of full frame sensor diminishes as well.

    2. I totally agree. I have the Fuji X100 an X100s. But did not dive into interchangeable due to lack of IBIS and not many Fuji lenses with IS Example the Sony 35mm and 50mm have IS / OSS. But the Fuji lens lineup seems more logical to me. The lack of just Sony branded FE lenses is also frustrating. Most all lenses are Zeiss and G branded at very high cost. Nikon an Canon give you both choices One can get a 50mm F1.8 from Canon for $120. Yes it is not weather sealed etc and not a Pro lens but not all need a Pro grade Sony only gives one choice of a $800 55mm f1.8 Sony makes nice bodies but frustrate the heck out of us with lack of better lens selections. Endless bodies Sony start focusing on more lenses

  14. Yikes! Except for the 28mm, they’re all kinda big. It would be awesome if Sony could have high quality compact lenses in the f2-2.8 range like the Contax G line – Those are tiny and superb!

    1. They do! They have the 35mm 2.8 that is decent, in addition to the legendary 55mm 1.8. The one thing you have to realize is that the smaller the lens construction, the more corrections the camera must apply to the image, therefore lowering the contrast, IQ, and creates distortion. At the end of the day, you get to pick between quality and weight.

    1. I imagine it’s a case of paying for the optics and their design, which for a ff e-mount in that zoom range must be a headache..

      1. Certainly yes.
The Nikon 28-300 is currently at 760 € , but started at 999. The Canon 28-300 is since years around 2.100 €. And both are no overall good lenses from IQ point of view.
The 24-240 FF zoom might be considered high priced but for sure not overpriced.

      2. True, but on the other hand superzooms are usually sold to people who want an affordable 1 stop shop. I just can’t see many people who’ve bought a full frame body being remotely interested in a superzoom.

    2. I don’t know about Euros but I was expecting something like $999.
If it’s over $1000, then I would like a extra G sticker on (just to look good).

  15. Nikon/Sony…
Nikon has just introduced a special camera just for astrophotographers.
While I am not into astrophotography I admire thier concept of considering all photographers in thier product development decisions, not just the most popular catagories.
Lenses too provide a full range including extreme lenses.
Sony on the other hand is an innovator and constantly brings new technology and new ideas to the table.
They do not however consider a wide variety of photographers but only cater to the most popular trends. The lack the more extreme telephotos and other lenses in A mount, and thier E mount consist of a fine selection of nothing but multiple versions of only the most common basic lenses…the result is an incoherrent and incomplete system.
Financially Nikon sales are unfortunately dropping, and Sony has its own share of financial difficulties.
Meanwhile Canon continues to dominate while newcomers like Samsung and others threaten to pop up and take market share.
So whats my point?….. This would be a good opportunity for Sony and Nikon to merge.
The combined Sonikon could make thier systems compatable. Nikon would contribute an established full range system, and top notch lens system desighn.
Sony..already making many Nikon sensors could continue developing new technolgies to add to that system.
The two companies both have strengths and weaknesses that completely complement each other.

    1. >Nikon has just introduced a special camera just for astrophotographers.
While I am not into astrophotography I admire thier concept of considering all photographers in thier product development decisions, not just the most popular categories<

If you like this approach then buy a Canon, they offered an astro converted camera years ago, but few realize they did. Nikon are simply playing catch up.

    2. Nikon are still quite big, a major camera brand and and one of the leaders in the imaging industry to agree to become a part of such merger. Although the way they are unwilling or unable to participate in the rapidly growing mirrorless market is starting to damage their brand name. The Nokia scenario is not impossible if they do not make serious changes soon.
However, I was surprised Sony didn’t snap up Pentax when they were sold by Hoya to Ricoh. As far as I know the deal was in the range of $10 million, although there might have been further debts to cover, etc.

      1. I wonder if Sony can now just buy both Ricoh and Pentax as a whole. They can continue making the excellent Pentax K3 cameras in both A and K mount. Pentax has great lens system and expertise and both Pentax and Ricoh like comming out with innovative products similar to Sony.

      2. I do not think buying Pentax or Ricoh would really add value to Sony…they offer nothing that Sony lacks.
Nikon however offers a credidible full system and proffesionalism that Sony sorely lacks.
Yes Nikon is much bigger in the photo industry than Sony, but Sony is a much bigger company and would be the one to take the lead role.
Nikon is still strong and proffitably, but sales and profits are dropping.
Nikon would be better off merging now before thier value drops.
Together they would be in a better position to compete against both Canon and the smaller competitors. As for a Canon/Sony merger..I think that would be a really bad move for both Sony and Canon.

        1. Talk to a credible Nikon Pro, one who’s enrolled in NPS. Ask what the NPS service is like, how good service is and how long it takes. Look at how much of that system is actually relevant to today, look at what glass Nikon actually recommend for their 36mp sensors. Half of that legacy Nikon glass is simply not good enough for a modern digital sensor.

It’s all well & good having a huge system but if half of it is outdated and not up to spec, what good is it really!

Want a good, competent and modern system, then buy CANON. They’ve given you a 50mp camera now. What more do you actually want?

    3. It’s going to be just a matter of time before people realize that buying a 7D Mark II for 3x the weight, 3x the cost, and all for a lower IQ than the a6000 is not a good idea.

      1. 7D Mark II and 600L doesn’t give lower IQ than a6000, and the weight hardly matters with that lens. If you’re interested in shorter focal lengths, obviously you should be using a full frame camera anyway

        1. >If you’re interested in shorter focal lengths, obviously you should be using a full frame camera anyway<

YES!!! And that's the point many completely miss.

      1. Get real…these are all toy cameras for common everyday snapshooters with only common everyday snapdshooter lenses in wa, normal, and portrait focal lenghths available.
If you even have to ask that question than you clearly fit into that catagory.

    4. Pretty quiet on the eos-m canon is going to crush Sony with their serious mirrorless front lately Barry… wonder why that might be? 😉

      1. Clearly you like to make up your own statements and credit them to me…so go look at what I actually said rather than lying to all thes people about what I said!!!

  16. Disclosure: I already have the A-mount Zeiss 24-70mm, 85mm and 135mm which I adore, but want something more compact for travel.

  17. Yikes! Except for the 28mm, they’re all kinda big. It would be awesome if Sony could have high quality compact lenses in the f2-2.8 range like the Contax G line – Those are tiny and superb!
I already have the A-mount Zeiss 24-70mm, 85mm and 135mm which I adore, but want something more compact for travel.

    1. Exactly. The trouble is, e mount was designed with APS in mind, and eventually raped to 135. If this is good design, I don’t know what bad design is.

  18. That macro lens is the most interesting of the pack because apart from great macro (all macro lenses are very good for their purpose) you can also use it for portraits because it’s fast (not as fast as a 1.4 or 2 one but still good).

The super-zoom is a bad choice because the IQ will be very poor for a 10x zoom on ff, especially considering the mount smaller diameter…

  19. Not surprised that None would be on top. Yes some might have some lenses already but I think Cost is a big factor for most. Everyone has to have a cell phone and some are not cheap but for most the phone is subsediced by phone company with a 2 year contract in some country’s But of course not all Not all need a camera so cost will be looked at differently. Canon is offering the Rebel with 2 lenses for under $500. An APS-C size sensor camera and it has remained a strong seller. Would I pick a rebel over Mirrorless, no. I just feel that prices are a bit high for the current world economy and therefore sales are now slumping I’m surprised that there is not a 85mm portrait lens. Or can this 90mm be used for portrait work. But it is only F2.8. Seems like an 85mm F1.8 would be more popular than a macro lens Maybe I’m just stupid to think so.

    1. ‘Or can this 90mm be used for portrait work.’

I guess it will crack when you shoot faces/people with it.
      Come on!

      1. Im not stupid to think it could not be used – but will it give as good results like a 85mm F1.8 prime portrait lens ? It was designed as a Macro and therefore the results might not be as good – similar to a 50mm vs a 85mm or a 70-200mm will yield different results – that was my point – I have the 30mm sony macro lens – and it is not that practical as a 30mm in my mind for everyday shooting – but as a macro it is quite decent for the money –

          1. Longer focus throw, proper focus ring therefore better for video too. A win-win for me. My 85L was USELESS for video, you could hear the lens elements rattle around as you focussed the thing.

          2. It means optimized for close focus, which does leave the possibility of degradations near infinity, but I’ve only seen some very very old macros work like that.

        1. you think shooting with a 85mm wide open at 1.8 is that much different than 90mm at 2.8? the macro ‘function’ (close focusing ability) is just an extra…

        1. what lens would you buy if you want something in the 90mm range that is cheaper, offers autofocus, is build as was well as the sony, is not bigger?

    1. Because they are new and a product of a 100% digital design. You pay to play. For the rest of us (including me) we use adapters. Lots of fun without the after morning sickness when Sony goes under.

  20. Why the hell do you keep calling this a new lens announcement, when it’s well known what lenses will be released when at what price? Seriously?

  21. I’d only consider the 28 and the WA adapter (but only if it’s optically better than the “just meh” 35), mostly to complement the 55.

Honestly, the 55 is the only lens keeping the system afloat. The 16-35 and 70-200 are decent but are priced as if they were f2.8s; all the rest are either optically meh, seriously overpriced, simply grossly large (even though the mirrrorless design’s advantage should be smaller and more compact non-tele lenses) or a combination of these.

Luckily we can adapt lenses and don’t have to rely so much on Sony to deliver…

    1. Nonsense, they are priced like other OEM f4’s. What others?28-135mm is none of those thing, 28-70 is a decent and affordable ‘kit’ lens. Which leaves the 24-70mm, which to me is quite a good lensand very reasonably priced due to its reputation.

    1. Sony have an excellent APSC E-mount 20mm/2.8 pancake. What they need is:
      – 35mm (50mm equiv) pancake, similar to Pentax 40mm/2.8 Limited lens
      – 60mm (90mm equiv) pancake, similar to Pentax 70mm/2.4 Limited lens
I don’t care if they are relatively slow, f2.4, 2.8, even 3.2 will do.

          1. Wow, nice little lenses they have over in Pentax world. But after reading the review, I wouldn’t buy if Sony released something for e-mount. Bokeh is very busy, sharpness very low … It’s like the 16mm pancake from Sony. I don’t buy a shitty lens just to have it with me. I can then use my iphone.

  22. No unfortunately although I don’t discredit anyone who plunks the cash down. I’m getting great results with Minolta MD glass for pennies on the dollar- no joke. Secret sauce in those lenses there is. Bigger lenses? A99II PLEASE!

    1. There’s a reason minolta md lenses are pennies on the dollar. corner and edge resolution, chromatic aberation, etc. You don’t have a high resolution wide gamut monitor or lens testing equipment. You’re a bit like a middle aged woman shooting photos with an iPad. You don’t know enough to know anything. Good lenses (without fail) will cost you money. There’s also an inverse – expensive lenses like the Leica are no better than many far cheaper lenses. I can only rec a handful of lenses worth buying / carrying.

      14mm sam/rok/bo 2.8
      21mm Zeiss 2.8
      Zeiss Otus 25mm? Coming soon
      Sigma 35mm 1.4
      Zeiss Otus 55 1.4
      Zeiss Otus 85 1.4
      Zeiss Apo 135 2.0
      Nikon 200mm 2.0
      Nikon 300mm 2.8
      Nikon 400mm 2.8

      1. Your not right on the corner and edge resolution- not even close. Tests show almost all of the 35, 50, 85 and 135’s can do up to 150 line pairs stopped down a little. Many of them display very good to excellent corner sharpness stopped down one or two. CA is easily fixed PP. I have 2k lenses and yes they are better. But to assume MD is inferior is to miss the point. With a little bit of work there is plenty of wow factor. They could also benefit from 36MP’s easily and still outperform many of the Zeiss zooms in their similar focal range. Biggest issue is bokeh given 6 straight blades- but depends on numerous factors as to the final image.

What I do know is what my eyes see both on screen and in print. It tells me to go take pictures and actually compare instead of listening to half baked arguments on lens designs from arm chair photographers.

      1. 50mm 1.4’s are all good. MC or MD- virtually no difference. Good thing to keep in mind though- wide open you have ghosting and lack of contrast. Not the end of the world- still sharp. However, the 1.7- next stop down on the aperature ring is 2.8. For the 1.4’s it’s 2.2. Consider what you want in terms of that second stop. Others?

I’m a fan of the 135mm 3.5. Sharp wide open. It’s SHARP. 35mm 2.8 isn’t bad either and can be had under 50 bucks. 35mm 1.8 goes for around 250.00- I’d pass. 85 F2 I saw go for 350.00 yesterday- that’s a stellar lens. 21 is hard to come by and goes for around 199.00. I’ve tried a few other MD mount brands, but found the performance much worse in terms of sharpness and contrast. Minolta had a good balance as long as your not expecting the absolute best in bokeh rendition. Otherwise, they are all very good.

Here is a really cool comparison done on MD and other modern lenses:

        http://artaphot.ch/sony-nex/altglas/341-sony-a7-and-classical-rokkors

      2. Here are some real world pics…nothing special but a few test shots I got after recieving the 135 and 50. Cruddy weather up here in CT so I have to get what I can get.

  23. All too expensive or too big for my needs.
Only ones I find a bit interesting for my A6000 are the 28mm F2 and the 24-240mm. Of the first I like the FOV, but difficult to defend its price when I have the SEL35F18 (+ it misses OSS); of the second I like the zoom range which would make a nice travel combo with the SEL1018, too bad for its price.

  24. Probably none of them unless the 90mm macro is stellar, but I’d buy both Loxia’s if Sony would at least release specs on the a7r2. Though my preference is to begin building a Sony system, time is fleeting, and I am having a hard time not investing in a Nikon D810 and Otus system instead.

    1. Do Nikon and Otus. You can always adapt the lenses over to an A7RII when it inevitably drops 50% in value within the first year or less.

      1. $4500 for a lens that looks about the same as Sony’s $750 FE/55…………. I’d rather buy the FE/55 & FE/85 and a nice vacation package.

        1. True- I can’t argue that. If he mentioned it though then maybe his budget and expectations are high. There is the superb 135mm F2 APO for a lot less scratch.

          1. Yes, the OTUS on a D800x looks wonderful in a lab. But out in the field, where we make pictures the FE55 & FE85 have so many advantages. But they’re only realized “out in the field.”

          1. It’s like that old fable spun about the 85’s. Those of us that used the 85L daily soon figured out that at f/2 (where we nearly always shot Canon primes) it was indistinguishable from the el cheapo 85/1.8. But if you’re shooting/reading/quoting charts you may well have a point.

  25. Sony has not anounced any major new camers yet…however theyvmay just want to anounce last and may still have something interesting to say.

        1. They’ve merely introduced a user definable delay between the mirror flipping up and the shutter firing. It doesn’t have EFCS, so it remains to be seen whether camera will be affected by shutter shock.

          1. Canon introduced motor based shutter mechanism (5Ds).. Totally different shutter method compared to the regular spring type shutters.. all that thanks to the need to make shutter shock vibration smaller. Wheter it is different in reality remains to be tested in the lab. But it’s defo not just delay for mirror .. (my understanding.)

      1. Not suitable. Crop is not the same thing as native. Even at the same price you should get a native 28 instead of the FF 28 cropped for a half frame.

          1. The perspective is different. I don’t know how to phrase it exactly but it’s different. Let’s say you took a photo with, say, a native 35mm(thus ~50mm FF equiv.) on half frame, of two of the same objects, A and B. A is nearer and takes up, say 1/4th of the frame, B is further away taking up 1/9th of the frame. This photo, taken with a ~50mm on FF on the spot, would turn out exactly the same, but taken with a 35mm FF lens used on a cropped body, would leave A the same size and B LESS than 1/9th the frame, the original size, or you could say B seems further away. This would affect your photos adversely, giving it an unnatural look, unless the photo in question happens to have an inconspicuous spacial structure, like a portrait with bokeh all around the subject.

          2. You’re wrong, my friend. Put a FF lens on your APS-C and it well look the same like you put a “special” APS-C version on it. The focal length is always 35mm/FF, even if the lens is designed for APS-C (or even smaller) sensors. Take the 50mm 1.8 DT SAM (APS-C a-mount) and the 50mm 1.4 (FF a-mount), both at 2.8 … it will look the same beside the a little bit different rendering because they’re different lenses.

The only advantages of APS-C versions are lower price and smaller size. But a FF lens on APS-C has the most likely advantage that it has better corner performance. Clear: Corner performance is always inferior to center performance. But if you cut off the corners by using it on a smaller sensor, you end up with better corners.

That’s what Peppe suggested, using a FF on APS-C. What you came up with was that 35mm on FF looks different than 50mm on APS-C. But that’s also not true if you setup the aperture right. A 50/2 on FF should look very similar to 35/1.4 on APS-C.

          3. I admit that the corners would improve, but it’s not a matter of rendering not at all. This matter I’m describing exists and I have not mistaken it for anything else. If you want an easier comparison then take a 21mm, take a photo of a scene(camera stationary) with subjects near and far, crop it 4x in the middle, then without moving the camera–recomposing–take a photo with a 85mm lens (~4x the focal length of the 21mm) at the same spot. I’m not talking about the color, the sharpness, or whatever, only that the subject would turn out the same size(same angle of view), but the background would seem very far away on the 21mm crop, and pulled close on the 85mm. Anything further than your subject would seem further on the 21mm crop and closer on the 85mm, and anything closer than your subject would seem well seperated from the subject on the 21mm crop but seem “pressed onto the same plane” as the subject on the telephoto.
I don’t think I can make this any clearer. The main problem is that I’m missing the correct vocabulary for this. If you still don’t understand then I can’t help you.
            —————————-
And I’m telling you to use a 21 and 85 because the difference would be too obvious to miss. I’d say that the difference on a 24-cropped-35 and a real 35 is already very obvious, but maybe you just don’t notice.

          4. perspective depends on lens (photographer) location, not lens focal length. different lenses just crop different FOV from the same perspective.

          5. Then what I’m talking about isn’t perspective, whatever it is read my example and it should be clear, I already said I couldn’t phrase it exactly.

  26. Buying any Sony E lens means a commitment to 11+7 bit depth. It’s a bit like being forced to eat a happy meal for the rest of your life while all of your photographer friends eat lobster and filet mignon at the 14 bit color buffet. Sony is to photography what Pabst Blue Ribbon is to Champagne.

      1. I’m shooting the D810 and have only picked up my A7r for comparison tests. The Sony fails badly everytime against the Nikon.

        1. I am shooting A7r and have only picked up my D810 for comparison tests. The Nikon fails badly everytime against the Sony.

          1. I am shooting Nokia 808 and have only picked up my A7R for comparison tests. The Sony fails badly everytime against the Nokia.

    1. Anton Berlin, you only shoot comparison pictures, you have no work of any worth to share with the group. You are a frustrated hobbyist with an obsessive personality. Try developing an interest in PHOTOGRAPHY – you may become happier person!

  27. Because the lenses haven’t been officially announced yet. Sometimes companies reveal new products in development well before the official announcement. That doesn’t mean that the announcement is not an announcement.

    1. I agree. Instead of releasing one kit lens after the other (3 versions? As of now? )they should get the 16 pancake fixed.

    2. Why would we need another 16mm? Who needs another glass for Gonzo selfies? There’re so many gaps in their lens lineup and you request an lens which is already there. Great job, Pancake!

    3. they need more fast (f/2) pancake in 25…32 range.
16 mm is not lens that you use often. landscape shooter may be served better with sammy 12/2

    1. There is not a single piece of credible evidence that an A7000 is even in the works, so no surprise there.

  28. I would buy something twice as long as already owned Zaiss 55 mm with OSS for portraiture. FE adaptation of Zaiss 100/f2 macro planar would be great.

    1. It won’t happen. E-mount doesn’t support moving so many elements when focusing. If you change the focus method then the entire design goes.

  29. I just bought Tamron 90mm 2.8 VC for this spring and summer (nikon mount) 485 euros. At 999 you should get Zeiss glass. IMO

    1. So all lenses should be priced at third party pricing? Yeah wishful thinking! I guess this Zeiss 35mm f1.4 should be $750 like the Sigma as well?

      1. The Zeiss should be smaller sharp but smaller. f 2.8 / 3.5 / even 4 but sharp enough for 50mpix .. (this is coming from the .. I want 50mpix landscape option and a super good but light wide angle that is allways stopped down tobegin with)

          1. Now that you mention it .. I did check that out. Well per pixel resolution is not in the league of Sigma art but the price is same. Weight is good tho. (only 7 blades.. at that price it should be 9 or more). Will be interesting to see how well it works on a higer res. sensor camera. Sharpness score 22 (A7R) vs 30 Sigma 35 art (D810/D800E) I wonder can it even be done.. with small aperture lenses ultra sharpness that is?

      1. Sony G lenses are great, as good as Canon L or Nikon`s pro line. But nothing is in the same league as Zeiss.

          1. Leica made too many mediocre lenses for me to consider them equal to Zeiss. Few lenses are extraordinary, but IMO, Zeiss holds no1 at any given focal length.

          1. No.

Yes but no 🙂 Zeiss is good in general but not all lenses are superior to their competitors – and in all conditions. What comes easy to my mind where the 16-70/f4 for e mount aps-c. I had 2 of them. Both were send back. A really bad lens with bad corner performance, decentered and no character. Think about the average 16-80/3.5-4.5 for a mount, 24-70/4 for FE or the two Touit primes. Definitely not best in class.

          2. Actually 16-70/f4 is designed by Zeiss, made by Sony. That lens is a compromise, and doesnt stand to Zeiss quality. Only one lens from Zeiss branded Sony lenses truly has Zeiss quality, FE55f18.

          3. You can’t just go there and take what best fits your argument. They talked about G lenses and Sony Zeiss lenses. You accept the Sony (!) FE55f18 because of quality but not the Zeiss (!) Touits? Why that? And why is a production handled by Sony something that dismisses a Zeiss lens for the 16-70/4 but is your argument for the 55/1.8? Why didn’t they just design a better lens?

Don’t get me wrong. I own like 4 Zeiss lenses, they’re gorgeous, I like their character a lot … But I also send two Zeiss lenses back because of bad image/production quality and decided against 3 Zeiss lenses for a better option during research. I have a lot of love for Zeiss lenses but not blindly.

          4. Man, you seriously have to work on your logic. I did not take what best fits for my argument, i simply stated the fact that Sony did great job with that lens, and that it is great feat for them, because they couldnt with any other Zeiss they made. It is not about whether i “accepted” this lens or that lens.
Why not better… Well it has the same quality of Loxia 50/2 and very similar rendering, to the point that i cannot say whether the picture is taken by Zeiss Loxia or Sony Sonnar. Thats why i cannot say that lens is better, but it certainly is fantastic.

          5. Got that. Back to the point: Zeiss makes very good and very average lenses (for whatever reason and in whatever partnership), right. So, when you say Zeiss is always beyond Sony G, Canon L and Nikon, is wrong, right?

          6. Zeiss manufactured in Zeiss facilities are beyond Sony Canon Nikon and everything else. By that i mean their facilities in Germany and Kyocera in Japan. We cannot judge Zeiss quality bu FE16-70, just as we cant judge Leica by the lenses they put in Panasonic Lumix point and shoot.

          7. I may agree with you on Kyocera but I don’t think Kyocera even makes lenses anymore, it was Cosina from quite a while back. And honestly all Sony Zeiss are to be regarded Sony, not Zeiss. So good FE55? Good Sony. Bad 16-70? Bad Sony.

          8. You even compare EF 100mm with makro planar :))) See some real world shots, not charts shot by people who cant use manual focus. There is even no comparison. Zeiss is sharper at f2 than Canon on f5.6 CA on Canon is heavy, on makro planar non existant. Not to mention light transmition.

  30. As a Nex 3, and now very happy A6000 owner, I wish Sony would make the same lens priorities as Fuji. We need a longer, or faster zoom or at the very least a teleconverter. Without these the A6000 is seriously hampered as a sports/wildlife shooter.

    1. Why would they? Longer, faster tele-lenses are huge, by all laws of physics. Why would there be any demand to attach a giant lens to a small body? You should have thought about that before you got your NEX and your A6000.

Alternatively, buy an adapter or a A77M2. If you need a wide lens selection, use A mount (or Canon or Nikon). You’re simply on the wrong mount.

    1. Well, they announced the A7II 2 months after Photokina. So it looks like it’s just a strategy of them to announce cameras outside the big events.

  31. That 24-240 zoom should make for a nice outdoor daytime walk around lens on the A7. On an FS700, hopefully it will be a great longer range lens.

I wonder how well the OSS is on it. Anybody know yet?

  32. I’ll buy none of them. Instead I’m impatiently waiting for more new compact APS-C E-mount primes… And a fairly compact telezoom of good quality would also be nice. Hopefully Sony hasn’t forgotten about those since there are still massive gaps in the lineup.

  33. So mint used Minolta 28/2 and 20/2.8 with LAEA-4 adapter will cost a little more than the new FE lenses. I wonder which shoots better? The old Mino’s are spectacular. And I don’t think adding a converter is any easier than changing lenses.

    1. readers like interaction and the webmaster likes to have many visitors.
and you know what – it works everytime. just look at all these stupid comments…

    1. haha… curved 36mp sensor. It’s on record that Sony have been struggling to curve sensors with higher mp. Which makes me think you are blowing it out of your ***.

That said, I would buy such a camera in a heartbeat.

          1. They’ve been avoiding very fast glass for the A7x series for some reason. Hopefully, that will change this year. But even a 1.4 or 1.8 would be interesting if it is as sharp and great as the 55mm

  34. As long as they have that stupid focus by wire system I will not buy anyone of them, this is something I really want from Sony: a menu that let’s me turn off the dynamic focus turning speed. When I pull focus from one point to another I want it to go from one point to another, not from one point to something else that might be close or not at all depending on the speed you turn. 42 years of focus pulling out of the window, yes I mean with lenses….

    1. >a menu that let’s me turn off the dynamic focus turning speed<

Good point. And a menu that when I'm in video mode doesn't display all the irrelevant stills crap & vicci-verca.

      1. Yes and while we are at it: a shutter lock, perhaps a 180degree shutter option so when I put the camera in the bag or whatever it doesn’t switch to 250th/sec by accident. I should check if there is a lock button option in a custom setting where you can make a video only settings. 50P, 25P and 100P custom setup: no function button for shutter only the relevant video stuff, all the right picture profile and gamma settings. Maybe I should just wait for my bloody FS7 to arrive 🙂

        1. Biggest PITA for me, there’s no way to remap a custom button to switch off the LCD. It’d be better if Sony had an LCD screen that you could simply flip like the GH4. Canon’s C100ll screen is better still, you can read it whilst sitting alongside the camera during interviews.

          1. The c100II is pretty good, if it did 4K I might have kept all canon gear and waited for a while but I thought it would be fun switching to Sony A7S because I was getting a FS7. With all the weird lenses and inconsistent design i might reconsider sony though. Switching off the LCD on a A7S actually really helps with power consumption, I shot 4 hours on one battery recently. But I used a separate EVF.

          1. yes, and it shoots 4K internal and does unlimited 180fps, you should google it 🙂 But the kit with lens is around 10K euro.

    2. I CAN NOT vote this up enough!!! This is the biggest pet peeve of mine. Absolutely useless lenses if you can’t manual focus consistently

  35. New lenses is no cure for colour-challenged raw files. This system will be history sooner than you can say bit depth!

  36. Sony has developed this new art filter called Posterization. I’m thinking of switching to Sony, because my Olympus camera doesn’t have that particular art filter.

  37. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFantastic news!

  38. I was still thinking how it’s a pity that E lenses are so big when I saw Sigma’s Dp0Q…now THAT’s a ridiculously large half frame 14/4. It looks larger than the ZM 15/2.8. Those people must’ve gotten hit in the head designing a stupid lens like that.

  39. I will buy non of them cause I’ve got FE 16-35, 35, 55, 24-70 and complete set of Canon glass from 16-400! the new FE lenses is not in my plans waiting for longer ones and some specials.
The FE lenses areof fantastic quality whatever some on SAR are are screaming!
I will buy the new A7rII as soon as it is released.

  40. The 28mm f/2 looks like it could hit the sweet spot of size and price, assuming the image quality is up to snuff. Since there isn’t a compact 35mm f/2, this is the next best thing.

But is the 35mm f/1.4 some kind of sick joke? That’s one massive lens. Maybe Sony will put out an own-branded 35mm f/2 one day to fill the gap.

    1. its only ~11cm long and 1.4 wide open so no ‘sick joke’ at all.

‘Maybe Sony will put out an own-branded 35mm f/2 one day to fill the gap’

a third 35mm from sony? are you serious!?

      1. It’s already very big considering the size of VM/ZM 35/1.4, especially VM. They could fit 10 AF motors and it would still be smaller. There’s simply no excuse.

      2. A-mount Sigma 35mm f/1.4 is only 9.4 cm long and is a stellar lens. Why should the mirrorless version of a 35mm f/1.4 be so big? I know it’s not the same lens but you see where I’m going. It’s like all these other 3rd party lens makers who are basically making the barrel longer on their SLR mount lenses to make up the loss of flange distance–it’s lazy and defeats one of the big benefits of mirrorless. All you’re doing is shifting size from the body to the lenses and end up with a bigger kit overall.

Fair enough reply though on yet another 35mm lens. It’s my favorite length but not everybody likes it nearly as much as me. For me having the right 35mm makes a system, and neither the f/2.8 or f/1.4 do it for me.

  41. Sony, please release a 100-135mm F2 OSS AF compact-ish prime! AND allow to use the LAEA1 and LAEA3 with A-mount lenses WITH PDAF on the A6000!

  42. Give me a Sony A7000s, 12mp, IBIS, 14EV DR and 1 stop better than A6000 in high iso for 1000USD body only. That would be my buy and my keeper for many years.
