New Zeiss E-mount zoom for filmmakers (and for $19,900 owners).

Zeiss is well know for their CP Cine Lenses (here at BHphoto). And at the recent NABshow Zeiss announced the new CZ.2 28-80 T2.9 which will also be sold as E-mount lens. It has the following features:

1) It has what ZEISS calls a “sweet spot effect” (uniformity of illumination)
2) Covers the Full Frame area (good for the VG900!)
3) it is conform to “4K production standards”
4) Front diameter is 95mm and wight is 2.5 to 2.8 kilograms (5.5 to 6.2 pounds).

That massive huge lens isn’t really cheap. It costs €14,900 or US$19,900 (excluding VAT).

    1. Since the NEX VG900 nobody.

I think Zeiss even stuck a few of their other CP lenses on the VG900 at one of the trades shows to show it worked.

The CP zooms are designed to maintain constant focus, exposure and field of view as they are zoomed, which is one of the reasons they are so expensive.

      1. >which is one of the reasons they are so expensive.
        Nope.
This is typical of lenses made as afocal unit + main lens, and there’s tons of such manual lenses, the ones for 8mm movie cameras are very cheap.
What is expensive here is cute markings and steadily rotating wheels. And a blue sticker.

        1. There’s more to it:
No breathing, parfocal, constant T stop, colour matched with other CP lenses, calibrated tracking, extremely tight tolerances combined with very high quality materials, low volume, and what not.

        2. You must be kidding! Comparing lenses designed for 8mm cameras in the 60ies/70ies with FF 35mm lens from 2013? Just the amount of the bigger chunk of high quality glass would make for the price difference.. There is the same difference like between a Yugo and a BMW M3.

          1. 8 mm lenses were only as example there’s nothing difficult in designing them.
In fact, designing 20x zoom with IS is more difficult.
As for price, Zeiss may charge as much as market will bear.

    1. Nothing is weird here. They know that a pro sony nex FF camera will be coming soon.
Likely something that most of us cannot afford remotely. But that is another matter that should no matter.

  1. Looks like a Rokinon cine lens for some reason…if rokinon did make a version like this I’d buy it from them.

    1. Good question. It is E-mount compatible, but I doubt that these rumors are useful for any but the few pro’s here at SAR. Additionally, this new lens isn’t expensive as such, since comparable lenses cost the same except this one actually covers the “photographic” full frame compared to the smaller super 35 format.

  2. Guys, Zeiss today is nothing more than a marketing brand, sweet spot effect…like all the lenses on the market for Full Frame sensor used on aps-c, this type of marketing is ridiculous!
I don`t get it when they are selling to professionals, this is kind of a laughable argument.
The quality should be on the specs that they are trying to sell, i really don’t think we are paying this price because of the lenses or the quality, we pay it because Zeiss has a name…

    1. Lensrentals.com has done some test with a couple of Zeiss cine lenses(28-80mm was not one of them, BTW) and based on the blogger’s words, I still believe that they are not just selling Zeiss name.

    2. Marcelo btp, just because you do not get it… Well it is more likely you do not have a clue.
These lenses are the best possible think to put on front of a cinema camera. Of course like: Cooke, Fujinon, Leica cinema lenses.
There mast be a reason why Arri, the most succesful cinema camera makers ever ask Zeiss to co-design and manufacture their Arri lenses.

Some of you guys, should just watch and learn.
