The Hasselblad Lunar gets delayed too!

After the NEX-7n also the Hasselblad Lunar announcement has been delayed! Amateur Photographer reports that: “Hasselblad has since told AP that the Lunar is ‘scheduled’ for June availability, but its spokesperson did not give a reason for the later launch date.”

Now…

…This is just pure speculation but try to put together the puzzles and you get this:
1) First SAR got info that the NEX-7 successor could be announced in April.
2) Then Hasselblad told Amateur Photogrpaher that they would launch the Lunar in April
3) SAR reports the NEX-7 successor launch has been delayed
4) Now Hasselblad delay’s the launch of the Lunar too

If there is a connection between the news than we can assume that:
1) The Lunar is actually based on the new NEX-7n and not on the current NEX-7. And that could be the reason why Hasselbald had to delay the launch -> because Sony delayed the NEX-7n release and Hasselblad can’t steal the show 🙂
2) If the Lunar will get announced in June than this means the NEX-7n will come in June too 🙂

Of course, that’s just me speculating. Am I wrong? Sources are welcome to share their thoughts about my theory by sending me a message at sonyalpharumors@gmail.com or by using the anonymous contact form. Thanks!

  1. Have to wonder if they’re holding off in order to get access to the new sensor planned for the Nex 7n. Is there any information out there on the new sensor specifications? I think there’s been nearly two years since the 7 came out, so hopefully there’ll be a significant improvement in some aspect of performance….

    1. Close but no. The Lunar will still cost $6,500.00. What you are talking about is the Lunar-N which will come a year later at $9,500.00.

Only way I can see the Lunar releasing now, is if the sensor one-ups the NEX7N’s. Kind of like what the Nikon D3X did to the A900 and tripled the price.

      1. not that we need to be snarky about it, but really who is going to buy a lunar? even if i were rich enough to throw $4k down the drain, i wouldn’t want to be seen with this monstrosity anywhere near me. that Pentax “designed” camera debacle and then this. bizarre corporate decisions.

        1. I agree alan – it seems far-fetched to think a lunar would be of interest to a rational person. However, excess money does things to peoples’ minds! I’m just interested in where the sensor tech is going. And, for all we know, Hassie has dreamt up some sort of magic that will add value to their offering. Guess we’ll have to wait and see – but, try to get/keep a life in the meantime and not get all twisted with bitterness in the interim.

  2. hahahaha

Wait until SONY refuses to allow Hasselblad –

    FIRMWARE UPDATES

Just like SONY does to us, the OLD Minolta Sony users

    omg

  3. It could also be that hasselblad need more time to gather more unicorn tears to build the control wheels.

  4. Andrea, I think your hypothesis is very plausible.

In fact, as soon as I heard the rumour that there could be a NEX-7 successor coming this year, I thought that Hasselblad wouldn’t settle for the “old” NEX-7. Can’t charge several times more for the “old” NEX-7 Hassy than Sony will charge for the new NEX-7N (or whatever it may be called)…
    .

    1. … and then there’s the hotshoe. Hasselblad may not want to use one that has been abandoned by Sony. The chance of flash manufacturers supporting the iISO hotshoe for very long is very slim.

  5. What if Sony changes the NEX7 body dementions? Even a slight change could cause Hassy to retool their case. Wow!

I guess Hassy is to cameras what Otter Box is to cell phones today!

    LOL

  6. Maybe Hasselblad was the one who pushed the change to ISO hotshoe. They told Sony-“Dude, your camera is awesome, we can help you to sell it but the hotshoe is kinda.. you know, nobody outside your Alpha system really likes it. So why don’t you try standard shoe?”. Sonyman- “Deal”.

    1. As far I know Sony did not come out with a standart hotshoe on the Alpha System, because it was part of the contract between Minolta and Sony (“no hotshoe until…”), because Minolta did not want “to hurt” the Minolta users. So Minolta is to blame for that.

      1. Yup. According to a rep I spoke with at the SONY booth in Las Vegas at WPPI in March, the contract that SONY signed with Minolta when they bought their photographic division stated that they had to produce cameras with the iISO hotshoe for 7 years. That’s why they ditched the proprietary Minolta iISO hotshoe immediately after those 7 years had passed.

        1. it is all good

If you use or build solid adapters that

HOLD the Flash on the Camera and not fall off the camera

Current adapters Sony makes cause flashes to
spend more time on the floor

  7. I was just thinkin’…

Hasselblad could sell the “Lunar” in two different ways. One way is sell it with the NEX7 preinstalled for $5,000 as normal. Another way is to drop $1,000 off the price and just sell the case for $4,000. You could then add your own NEX7 into it.

This alternate way to sell the “Lunar” could open up sales to millions of existing NEX7 owners and allow more people access to Hasselblad’s beautiful cases. (without having to buy the Sony NEX7 twice)

    Just a thought.

    CT

  8. Or, I could use my NEX-7 without a case to make it bigger and dorkier and flush my wallet down the toilet!

  9. They should delay this crap forever….. I would love to know in what office did actual people come together and say ,Yes this is a good idea.

  10. Why whould most of the usual residents of this blog ever thought that haselblad was going to use the older sensor from nex7, instead of getting the best available or soon available, had always surprised me.
Not that using the latest sensor from Sony will make me ever think of spending 5k on that fugly camera….

  11. I don’t understand why anyone should care about Hasselblad Lunar at all. It is just NEX-7 with overpriced wooden grip. Info about it has nothing to do with photography.

  12. …the good news behind that rumor could be, if Admin is right, the wait until the new NEX-7n arrives will not be too long. Wonder if the announcement date will be sometime soon, if they want to release in June!?

Anyhow, as long as it sells, the Lunar has every right to be produced.

It’s not about any personal taste preference it’s about business.

Even if I wouldn’t buy it and it’s way overpriced and ugly to me, it might just be the perfect camera for someone else. So we shouldn’t judge and let the market decide. Beauty lies within the beholder. I’m so glad all our Preferences are different or else everybody would be shooting with a CaNikon…and we would have nothing to discuss about!;-O

…So now Sony get the 7n-News out already, I’m interested!;-)

  13. Hmmmmm ….. seems to me a lot of not so mature people around here in a this forum, not knowing anything about real life business – at all!!

OEM is an important part of w/w economy and many of These famous branded products some of you are buying are manufactured by whom?

Look at the Leica – Panasonic relation; and that does work despite the high Price. And yes, those HB lenses are built by whom?

There is no reason to complain about and belittle this relationship, which might be a win-win strategy for all of us, forcing Sony to excell in Quality and adjust their products to western or even European style of professional photography.

And as for taste: I am sure there will be lots of users around who love that style of the Lunar. I am just thinking about the thousands of people buying wooden grips for diverse NEX & RX cameras plus leather whatevers to make their Sony cams look more pretty!!??

    Hmmmm ….. let’s wait and see! 😀

    1. I am assuming the margins are crazy on this thing. Since they didnt have to design the camera. So they prob only need a niche following to make money. It’s somewhat ironic to see so many people slam lunar shoppers just because it doesnt conform with whats considered mainstream. How do you think the majority of dslr enthusiasts (nikon/canon users) look at sony users? Basically, why on earth would you buy that?
