(SR4) Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 A-mount will come!

I got a rumor from a trusted source that the new Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 will come for A-mount too. There is no info about the exact release period but I have been assured that it will come for Sony too. Great!

  1. Didn’t Sigma get the memo about a/e (delete as appropriate) mount being dead?!

On a serious note, I’m very glad to see they’re still supporting Sony mounts with new lenses. Not sure an 800g 1.8 zoom is for me, but I can’t wait to see what the 35/1.4 can do on my a77…

      1. Doesn’t make sense. This equation makes slower lenses more expensive than faster ones. And superzooms like the 28-300 would be unaffordable.

          1. OK, in response to Mike’s snarky comment (below–I can’t find the “reply” link for it) about primes, here’s a better mathematical model:

            (1.01^(35-18))/(1.8^2)*2000=$1700
add $500 if the label “Zeiss” is attached.

      2. Response to ur statement from another thread…
I live in the world where sane people call this proprietary standard. I don’t have problem with proprietary per se, but with fools calling it open. Apparentlyneither metabones, kenko, fotga, kipon were unable to get “free” specs from Sony. So its “openness” has no effect on 3rd party accessories. Only “CZ” and Tamron lenses are fully supported, but these two are in very close relations with Sony anyway and don’t need that bogus openness

For M43 system (which is not “open”), much more lenses appeared than for “open” emount, also 3rd party bodies have been announced: blackmagic cinema, industrial camera and chinese Kodak.

        1. Yes, it is difficult to follow the comments on here.
I see your point, but there are plenty of adapters for E-mount, including Metabones, and I haven’t seen anyone sued yet. Whether they were “unable” or unwilling (or whatever) to get the specs, is anyone’s guess. From what I see, i.e. Sony’s statement, e-mount is pretty much open (I see what you mean by the definition of this word, but let’s not kid ourselves, we will never get anything really open from these companies, so what Sony is actually offering does look good). Having to have a company and sign an NDA do not strike me as some huge barriers, so I would call it “as open as it gets”. How does that licensing exactly work, we do not know, you assume it is problematic, which might very well be the case, but I haven’t seen anything tangible to support such claim.

The m43 mount is shared by two companies, that would certainly account for something. It is also older.

          1. >haven’t seen anyone sued yet.
That means nothing. Remember Nikon suddenly sued Sigma after years of Sigma making stabilized lenses?

            >From what I see, i.e. Sony’s statement, e-mount is pretty much open
Sony did not make such statement, the adjective “open” does not even appear there.

            >but let’s not kid ourselves, we will never get anything really open from these companies
            Compare:
IBM’s ISA, or Intel’s PCI. A lot of info available.
Sun’s Java. Java took money only for certification procedures.
Even Microsoft opened pretty much (not all) things about c# and ooxml.

            >Having to have a company and sign an NDA do not strike me as some huge barriers
That’s only prerequisite… There is a qualification process by Sony, and that is under NDA itself. And after that the company gets only “basic specifications” (what is that, a bayonet drawing?). I guess “full specifications” are under even more restrictions (and maybe fees/roalty), so PDAF & jpeg-engine correction won’t work with non-Sony lenses. Otherwise someone would have made something like LA-EA2, but better and with support of (stabilized!!) Canon and Nikon lenses, this is what Sony doesn’t want. As Metabones has to reverse engineer everything, they are unable make PDAF working…

          2. About the statement, no, it doesn’t say “open”, I meant their conditions don’t look like anything special. You could be absolutely right about the qualification process, but it is just a conjecture. Might very well be that something like the LAEA2 is simply quite an expensive product and might not be of interest to enough people to warrant the development. I mean, Metabones did make an AF capable adapter for Canon lenses, Sony didn’t seem to stop them and my bet is that at its price it hasn’t been an impressive seller.
Also, I am not really sure we can make the analogy with the software products you mentioned. It’s a different type of product in a different market.
As you said though, a company like Sony doesn’t have an interest in giving free specs around, so judging by the conditions (the ones in their statement, no idea what’s behind) it does look good. So, back to our initial issue, it doesn’t seem foolish to me to just say “it’s open”. Anyway, I believe we are somewhere between semantics and subjective conjectures.

          3. >Might very well be that something like the LAEA2 is simply quite an expensive product and might not be of interest to enough people to warrant the development.

LA-AE2 is exactly of low interest because of huge price and lack of IBIS in NEX bodies.

            >I mean, Metabones did make an AF capable adapter for Canon lenses, Sony didn’t seem to stop them and my bet is that at its price it hasn’t been an impressive seller.

Because of their AF is slow. AF is slow because Sony is not giving the specifications. In fact, many Canon users would be happy to use their lenses on much better sensor, but virtually non-existent AF cuts the possibility.

            >Also, I am not really sure we can make the analogy with the software products you mentioned. It’s a different type of product in a different market.
Are you deliberately ignoring ISA&PCI (open hardware standards) in my example to make your point? There are a lot of standards which are publicly available for non-profit use by students and hobbyists, and company may start developing a commercial product before obtaining a license (which is needed only after product is ready for market). Imagine how much more lenses and adaptors we had now is Sony adopted this policy.

            >So, back to our initial issue, it doesn’t seem foolish to me to just say “it’s open”.

It is as dumb as calling applying term “beatiful woman” to a human being without bosom (duh), waist (duh), specific female part but with beard and specific male parts (duh, etc).

  2. If Sony can make their stabilization as good as the Olympus 5 axis, and therefore make it extremely useful for videographers, I’d get this lens and move to Sony. Seeing as they now own part of Olympus I don’t see why they don’t start adding the 5 axis stabilization to their A mount cameras. Their current stabilization is fine for stills but can’t compare to Olympus when it comes to video.

    1. You make a mistake, there are one 50mm f1.4 and a 35mm f1.4. To that you can add the 3 Zeiss: 35mm, 50mm and 85mm f1.4 which are made by sony (optic conception is made by CZ, indeed)

  3. You know how the new head of Sony says to not realize anymore A mount cameras unless they can offer significant upgrades to existing models? Something like 5 axis, or something even better than 5 axis IBIS, would constitute such an upgrade.

    1. I don’t think so… If you go on Sigma’s french website, it’s confirmed that it this lens will be released for A-mount… Does it help people to believe in? Maybe Admin can change SR4 to SR5? 😉

In case you don’t believe. It’s written:
      “Montures
      SIGMA / NIKON (D)*1 / SONY (D)*1 / PENTAX*1 / CANON
*Les montures Nikon et Pentax ne possèdent pas de bague de réglage du diaphragme
*1 Si le boîtier ne supporte pas la mise au point HSM, l’auto focus ne sera pas disponible”
      Which means:
      “Mounts
      SIGMA / NIKON (D)*1 / SONY (D)*1 / PENTAX*1 / CANON
*Nikon and Pentax mounts won’t have an apperture ring
*1 if body doesn’t support HSM, AF won’t work”
      http://sigma-global.com/fr/lenses/cas/product/art/a_18_35_18/specifications.html

  4. That makes sense to me. They are likely to sell a gazillion of these lenses and they will not be cheap so even though there are less A mount cameras out there they will likely easily make back any investment it takes to make this in an A mount.

  5. I think procrastination is too big. Stop complaining, this is a rumors site. Be thankfull that at least you are getting some information that otherwise you wouldn’t have known.

  6. I wakeup one morning and read on SAR that the sky is falling and that third-party support for the A-Mount is waning and the next day its like an old Saturday Night Live skit from the 70’s saying “never mind”….
I know that this is a rumor site and I get that, but recently the rumors have become different and often contradictory and sometimes look to be for keeping viewers than providing information about future alpha products.

What do we really know about Sony’s short-term and longer-term plans?

When Sony purchased the rights to Minolta and the A-Mount many, me included were relieved and hopeful our investment in the mount wasn’t lost and some of us, me included invested heavily in Sony/Zeiss and Sony G lenses. That was about eight years ago and here we are, still hopeful that Sony really, REALLY does have a business strategy.

I question what is SAR’s business strategy?
If it’s true that Sony is waiting to develop new technologies before releasing anything new, then then next few weeks, months or YEARS could make this site just weird and tiresome to follow on a regular basis.

having just said all of this, I know that this is just a rumor site and who knows, Sony could announce the new A1 pro full-frame tomorrow with a 56MP sensor that has 256 focus points and flawless up to ISO 128K

    1. and written on the website (English, Italian, French, German…) + it’s been a “world premiere” as written on the website. So if it’s a mistake, Sigma’s webmasters are trully dumb…

  7. yeaaaaaa SO AWESOME thats EXACTLY the range i was looking for!! Perfect, if the build quality is nice, il get this + Fisheye + Portrait and bang, we have the perfet apc allround setup! awesome! Thx for sharing those rumors!
