A6000 already the most popular mirrorless camera at Amazon US (and 70-200mm FE doing well too).

On SAR’s poll over 60% of the readers said they like the new Sony A6000. That’s a good score! And the popularity of the camera also shows at Amazon mirrorless camera ranking (Click here to see). Both, the camera only and the kit versions are on top. The cameras are into the top 20 of the overall camera sales which includes compacts and DSLR too (Click here to see the ranking).

The first professional lens for mirrorless systems (so writes DPreview) is actually doing well too. The lens is in the top 20 of the most popular lenses (ranking here).

I am eagerly waiting to see real reviews and test of the new Autofocus system. We have to see if Sony’s big claims (best AF of all APS-C cameras) is correct or limited to good light conditions. And as a reminder: I got 100% reliable confirmation a new A77 successor is coming. So stay tuned the coming days and weeks. Finally some A-mount news too 🙂

  1. Is there a Sony DSC HX400 making a debut anytime soon? I’ve seen a few blurbs in different articles stating there’s something coming out soon.

  2. Early signs that this might be a sweet camera but I will wait to hear about the real Nex 7 replacement or the next ff A mount offerings. I am glad to see that Sony is finally getting the hang of this autofocus technology. All previous Nex cameras were lackluster and the 99 was not as great as it should have been

    1. What’s with everyone spouting the same “real NEX 7 successor” every post about this camera? People complained about the price of the A7A7R being too high and now complain about this camera being too cheap. “I wonder what a couple hundred more dollars would have added.” Seriously, if any of you people have actually been using Sony cameras for half as long as you claim, you would know that they often switch things up. If you want the same predictable updates with your cameras every year, you’re on wrong the train. I’d be complaining a lot more about the lens selection for E mount, than a lack of compelling bodies. Of course, there will be something between this camera and the A7/A7R, but that doesn’t make it “the NEX 7 successor,” it makes it their new camera for $1000.

      1. Exactly, I believe they are mad simply because it’s got 6 instead of 7 in its name. Ridiculous. I was going to buy NEX7 when its successor comes out, but wait, 650$?! And with almost everything improved over both NEX6 and 7? It’s a hell of a deal!

      2. You seem a little touchy. I never mentioned anything about price. I am looking for a smaller camera and thought the 7r was it but with a not so great autofocus and no electronic first curtain I would wait. The Nex 7 appears to have more accessible controls than the 6000. SAR has hinted to another APSC camera with similar body to the previous Nex or now alpha 1000’s. If it turns out that this is so, to me that would be their new top of the line Nex style camera. I am only assuming that this would have more accessible controls such as DSLR style camera. That is what I would like. I said this looks like a sweet camera but since I can wait I will see if they can manage to put all the needed parts to make a truly great camera. For example, why would Sony release a 7 and 7r at the same time but give the lower priced 7 an EFC and not the more expensive 7r. I started with the 850, I don’t know if that is long enough for you, but I don’t even know why this is even relevant. Oh and by the way I was not complaining about the 6000. I don’t care what name they give it, Sony could start using tens of thousands for all I care but If SAR is correct it sounds like there is another camera that will be announced that will sit above the 6000. Don’t get stuck on semantics.

        1. Man, I bet my business would be much better if only I had a “truly great camera” to work with, lol. People like you will never be satisfied.

      1. Yeah, the summer intern Sony assigned to design the a79 doesn’t get out of school until the end of June to wrap it up! 😉

Enjoying The Year of the A-Mount yet?

        1. I already have an A850, and A99 so I’m good for another two to three years.

I’m really not interested in camera bodies this year. Its really a lens/strobe year for me.

I’m thinking of picking up the 135mm STF, 16-35mm Zeiss a 16mm fish eye, and another set of Elinchrom BXRs.

I’ll make a decision on a body sometime in the fall after Photokina

        2. I’m good with my 2 A99s and A850. I shoot a ton though, being that its how I make my living, and the Caribbean is pretty tough conditions on a camera. That being said, not sure how much life these guys have left in them but I am interested to see what Sony comes up with to replace them when their shutters explode and contacts corrode (hot shoes have to be maintained intensely with the constant salt air here).

  3. Will the price of the NEX-6 drop due to A600? In my country it still costs over 800€ with the kit lens so i don’t know how much will the A6000 be.

    1. Sony doesn’t seem to discount their previous-gen models much, unlike say Olympus does. You’ll probably see the NEX-6 stay at around the same price until it disappears.

  4. The speed of the camera and price point is very nice- very nice. The design is mediocre at best. I still don’t “get” the e-mount though. I don’t want the superior handling of the ever increasingly lighter DSLR then I want M43rds. The negligable weight and size savings is of little value IMO. If it’s about lens selection then you go Fuji in aps-c land. To me, it’s that simple.

  5. Not sure how $650 translates to £599!

    $650 = £360 + 20% VAT = £432

    £599 – VAT = £500 = $829 – so what do we get for out extra $179 ?

  6. It is hard NOT to like this camera. It’s a killer camera. It’s a stupid no brainer when you consider the shocking price.

  7. Andrea, great work the past few days. This is one Italian-American who wakes up each day and checks your latest! It’s fun. Can you please, please if you know advise whether the a77 successor is SLT or mirrorless? Today due to all of the oohing and ahhing over the a6K focusing many are saying the next A mount body is surely mirrorless. To me, it’s still a bit premature. Also, I admire that you are betting your reputation on the a77 successor being announced in about a month. You have hardly ever sounded so sure of anything! It’s music to my ears, because I love my A mount lenses and want to use them natively for years to come.

    1. Why do you want to upgrade your A77? It was a great camera when it was introduced, it still is, why don’t you just use it until it is dead?

  8. I want nex7 successor but this is good camera for very good price
    24 mpx sensor – check
good nex nonretro/compact design – check
tri-navi would be better but probably better than nex6 – flat top
micro input is not important for me
I only hoped for R version – so maybe next time

but I dont have nex7 now so I understand this not big/good upgrade for nex7 users

Im waiting for full tests and reviews and Im probably in…
Im sceptical to SONY introduce heigher NEX model this year…

  9. Please….some A99 successor news. I think that Sony is being extra quiet about it and it makes me think it’s going to be a MONSTER! I want it already! Imagine, 36MP, better AF than the A6000, ISO and dynamic range like the A7R, hmm maybe even global shutter for video, 2K video, 120 fps at 720p….

  10. Rumours rumours. The animals have been fed but they’re already barking for more. Give the guy a wee break lads. He’s quicker and better than the rest of the hacks in rumour land. I’m sure he’s
having a little breather before coming back with the all important news on the upcoming rx? camera:)

  11. The FF version of this sensor will probably be used in a high end high MPix dual mount alpha camera. This would be the rumored A-Mount/E-Mount camera. At that point, everyone will understand why both mounts are alpha cameras. It would also be in line with the goal of having a camera to compete with the big boys. Add a larger battery, 4K EVF, dual processors, weather sealing and you have a professional camera… Don’t know about the lenses, or the professional support. Sure looks like this is where they are headed.

    1. The problem with mounting an A lens directly onto an E-mount body is that the focal point of the A lenses takes into account the mirror, so if you mount an A lens directly onto an E body without a tube of some kind, you’ll be focussing behind the sensor. Likewise, an E lens on an A body would focus in front of the sensor. This is why the full frame A7 and A7R use E-mount, and why the A-to-E adapters are reasonably deep (and even includes the mirror for the PD-AF one!)

Not saying it isn’t possible, but I’ll believe a combine A and E body without interposer tube when I see it…

  12. Not showing the roadmap and keeping our interest piqued is their strategy. Yet we never learn and buy Sony cameras every year looking for the “perfect one” until your wallet runs dry or you have enough of this. Excellent strategy, I applaud you, Sony! Nice amateur cameras though!

  13. Is it known if the NEX 5 series is dead then? I really want the flip/touch screen and all those NEX 5 characteristics. A5000 is no match.

A6000 has a useless viewfinder/flash (I wear glasses and use fast lenses), no flip/touch screen, is fat/big, but otherwise looks really good. I’d like those specs but with the NEX 5 balance.

    1. the a5000 is a replacement for the nex3, sony said it over and over.

The sony nex5 is still a great camera, I bet they will release a replacement for it with touchscreen and no evf since that camera had a lot of followers.

      1. Thanks for saying that.

        They should have spent more thought into how they name their cameras NEX 3 -> A5000, NEX 6 -> A6000, NEX 5 -> ??? A4000/A5500 ???

As it is, one could think they killed NEX 5.

        1. The Sony E mount product line, according to their website in the U.S., consists of the a5000, 5T, A6000 and A7/7R. So officially, the 5 still exists.

  14. NEX 6 is still superior for adapted lenses.

ANDREA, WE KNOW YOU KNOW. THROW US A BONE PLEASE. Is a79 SLT or mirrorless? I promise I will be patient on the rest of the specifications.
    🙂

  15. The name for the 70-200/4 is case-in-point for Sony’s idiocy in dropping the “NEX” moniker:

“Sony FE 70-200mm F4 G OIS Interchangeable Lens for Sony Alpha Cameras”

    Compare that to:

“Tamron SP 70-200MM F/2.8 DI USD TELEPHOTO ZOOM LENS 70-200mm Telephoto Lens for Sony Alpha Cameras”

Great job, Sony… now it’s crystal clear which lenses work with which cameras.

    1. The “FE” in the name makes it abundantly clear. In fact, every single Sony E mount lens starts with E or FE. It’s VERY OBVIOUS based on the name unless you are completely ignorant of the naming scheme in which case nothing will help you. This goes for every lens brand. They all have their little codes. Nikon has FX, DX, CX. Canon has EF, EF-S, EF-M. Pentax has the codes that have actually changed meaning over the decades between the medium format and smaller formats (FA, DA, etc.) which is surely far more confusing.

Sony has E, FE, DT (for APS-C alpha), and everything else is full frame alpha. Furthermore, the official model numbers start with SEL or SAL to quickly distinguish between mounts, if not frame format.

There is no trouble distinguishing the compatibility versus the rest of the market.

      1. if you want to sell cameras to everybody, including the stupid people, you need to be very clear about compatibility. the stupid people have money too. from their perspective, the Sony systems are a mess.

  16. These A mount users are such a PIA. Their cameras were release around similar Canons and Nikons, but it’s only the A mount users who clamor every single day, every single week every single month for rumors of impending update. The same canikon users who are using the cameras released around the same time are just out shooting happily.

      1. @ PinkBugle

No one replies to @calxn because he’s a a Nikon Canon fan that needs to seek serious therapy (rubber room, and one size fits all jacket). His persistent anti Sony chatter is normally irrelevant, and driven by his little camera syndrome.

    1. I love that you have constructed this world in your mind of A mount “people” and E mount “people,” like we are different races terrorizing each other. Just enthusiasts and professionals commenting on a forum, some complain, some contribute, and some just make odd idiotic comments like yourself.

      Grow up.

  17. So it looks like Sony has implemented the Aptina patents from the cross license agreement in March last year. That would explain fast PDAF like the Nikon 1.

  18. “TOP SELLER IN AMAZON” is just one of the stupidest things. So what? It’s also the ONLY newly announced system camera, so of course it’s gonna rank high. Additionally, it’s only a pre-order, and lots of folks will drop the pre-order, when the next-new-shiny-thing is announced if the NEX6 hasn’t shipped.

    Just DUMB.

  19. If I ran this site and read comment sections like this I’d probably just shut the fkn thing down. Everyone bitching about something, asking for something, whining about something, making idiot blanket statements, misquoting information that was already made extremely clear. The a6000 looks like an awesome camera. Why aren’t any of you talking about THE CAMERA THAT WAS JUST RELEASED? Things, like, I don’t know, throwing a metabones SB on it and what kind of glass might work best. Anything but all this bitching. Goodness, what a bunch ill-mannered selfish children on here.

  20. I clicked on pre-order, then when I found out it has only 2 dials (no Tri-Nav) and no touchscreen I cancelled it. I guess I’ll continue to wait until there is a suitable upgrade for my NEX-5n with faster phase detect focus on sensor, Tri-Nav dials, Touchscreen, and possibly IBIS. I guess I’m still hopeful that there is a NEX7 replacement that will be a notch above this a6000. Unfortunately I’m pretty certain that the engineers are going to keep assuming that they should reserve touchscreens for the 5 (5000) mid-level series cameras for some unknown reason.

    1. They explained in one of their interviews that nex 6 and 7 users primarily shoot with the evf so they didn’t want any unwanted presses to the touchscreen from a nose or whatnot. That’s how they explained it. However it was probably a marketing differentiation to get people to buy both.

    1. I wonder where you found a new NEX 7 for $650, but you either take the NEX 7, for the possibly better build, higher resolution, but slower viewfinder, and extra dial, or you take the a6000 for the better sensor performance, faster processor, better jpeg engine, newer firmware, built in Wifi, larger buffer, faster frame rate, better rear LCD, multi-interface shoe, better movie recording, digital zoom, and some weight savings among others… Seems like a pretty tough choice to me.

  21. Again relying on position in Amazon, which is complete cr@p and misleading.

They always get their stats screwed up – last time I looked the Canon 50 1.8 was the most popular and 3rd most popular SPR lens … it’s the same lens!

The same camera is often reported under several different descriptions, which need to be added together to come to any conclusion, otherwise it is worse than misleading.
