CineD published the full Sony FX5 Lab test and the conclusion is the following:

Sony’s FX5 camera sets a new benchmark in our standardized CineD Lab Test for full-frame cameras. Rolling shutter values are superb (with dual gain set to “OFF”), and still very manageable when DG is set to “ON”. Dynamic range is in a similar league to our top contender so far, the ARRI ALEXA Mini LF, and this observation is confirmed in the exposure latitude tests.

Part of the superb results is the new internal X-OCN LT RAW codec. All of that in a consumer price bracket! Wow – well done, Sony!

Sony made such a great camera… It’s truly a pity that we still don’t know when we normal human beings (aka non-influencers) will finally get our hands on it. 🙁

The new Brightin Star 50mm f/2.0 FE tri-sight lens is now available for preorder at Amazon, Brightin Star, BHphoto. The lens features rotatable aperture blades with three distinct shapes, allowing photographers to create custom, shaped bokeh patterns (such as stars or hearts) on the fly without using external filters.

Good news folks! Sony did officially register a new camera in China. it has the code WW261362 (Source E8M). And the few info we learn from this are:

  • Wifi-6 support
  • Sony Japan is the applicant

Those two details are usually reserved for mid- to high-end models. Entry-level models and some FX cameras are typically registered by Sony China (Wuxi) or Sony Thailand. My bet is that this will be the new Sony A7S IV. The only other candidates in the mid- to high-end category would be:

But here is the thing, Sony usually has a 4 year release cycle and the A9IV is likely to be announced in autumn 2027 while it’s way too early to get a new A1III.

What to expect from the Sony A7sIV:

  • Same FX5 sensor (16MP stacked)
  • integrated 9,44 million dot EVF
  • Same processor, IBIS and Autofocus of the latest Sony A7rVI
  • probably NO internal RAW codecs of the FX5

This is my speculation regarding the FX5 specs! I hope trusted sources can soon give me real solid rumors about that 😉

Where the A7sIV is better than the FX5:

  • First of all you can shoot stills(!) with this camera while you will never be able to take photos with the FX5
  • You have a neatly compact integrated EVF and there is not need to buy and carry the extra bulky EVF of the FX5
  • Uses the Alpha menu and not the Venice menu (good for those uses to the Alpha menu)

The only trade off is basically the missing internal RAW codec. What do you think…does it make sense for Sony to launch a new A7sIV right after the FX5?

The BIG problem:

AI companies are buying all the DRAM they can, which may be why Sony cannot begin shipping the FX5 yet. So, I wonder whether Sony will be forced to delay the launch of the A7S IV until it has fulfilled the FX5 preorders.

I fear that, although Sony registered the camera with the intention of announcing it in November, we may see the announcement delayed. 🙁

Dustin Abbott tested the “affordable” tele photo lenses and made this ranking:

600mm-Class Rankings

  • 🥇 Sony 400mm f/4.5 GM + 1.4x TC (560mm at f/6.3)
    • Result: Sharpest overall combination. Takes the 1.4x teleconverter exceptionally well with minimal loss of image quality and fast autofocus.
  • 🥈 Sony 600mm f/6.3 GM Prime (Bare lens)
    • Result: Extremely sharp native prime, though just a hair behind the 400mm + 1.4x TC combo on his test copy.
  • 🥉 Sony 100–400mm f/4.5 GM + 1.4x TC (560mm at f/6.3)
    • Result: Fantastic performance for a zoom lens, close to the primes in center sharpness.
  • Sony 200–600mm f/5.6–6.3 G (Bare lens at 600mm)
    • Result: Very strong center sharpness, but falls behind in mid-frame and corner performance.
  • Sony 400–800mm f/6.3–8 G (Bare lens at 600mm)
    • Result: Slower maximum aperture (f/8) and lower contrast/clarity compared to the others.

800mm-Class Rankings

  • 🥇 Sony 600mm f/6.3 GM + 1.4x TC (840mm at f/9)
    • Result: Clear winner. Exceptional contrast and detail across the entire frame despite being f/9.
  • 🥈 Sony 400–800mm f/6.3–8 G (Bare lens at 800mm)
    • Result: Brighter maximum aperture (f/8), but noticeably softer contrast and sharpness compared to the top prime setup.
  • 🥉 [TIE] Sony 200–600mm + 1.4x TC (840mm) &
    Sony 400mm f/4.5 + 2.0x TC (800mm at f/9)

    • Result: Similar overall performance. The 400mm prime has better corners/contrast, while the 200–600mm holds slightly more center detail.
  • Sony 100–400mm GM + 2.0x TC (800mm at f/9)
    • Result: Slight drop in corner sharpness and contrast compared to the tied options above.

We regular humans still have to be patient while Influencers had 2 months to play with this great little cine camera 🙁

Jason Morris shared his thoughts after using it for 60 days:

Key Pros

  • Tilt/Flip Screen Mechanism: The screen can flip directly upward from the back of the camera body. This is ideal for hip-level and low-angle shooting without having to extend the monitor out to the side.
  • Dual Gain ISO Mode: Provides cleaner shadow detail without relying on software noise reduction, making it easier to preserve highlights while boosting shadows.
  • Dynamic Active Stabilization: Offers strong stabilization performance for heavy handheld motion, cycling, or tracking shots.
  • 32-Bit Float Audio: Allows recording dynamic audio with less risk of distortion or clipping from sudden loud sounds.
  • Cinema Menu Workflow: Once accustomed to the layout, the video-dedicated menu structure allows fast operational adjustments.

Key Cons & Frustrations

  • 32-Bit Float Audio Restrictions: 32-bit float audio requires using the XLR top handle rather than working natively via the multi-interface shoe or camera body.
  • Open Gate Limited to RAW/XOC: Open Gate (3 × 2 full-sensor recording) is restricted to RAW/XOC recording formats. Standard XAVC S-I formats are capped at 16 × 9, forcing extra side-cropping when shooting with anamorphic lenses.
  • Anamorphic IBIS Wobble: In-body image stabilisation creates a roll-axis wobble when paired with anamorphic lenses, forcing him to turn off IBIS entirely and add weight to his rig.
  • Playback / Thumbnail Navigation: The playback menu restricts viewing footage to the currently selected system frame rate. Reviewing clips shot at 100 fps requires navigating through the main menu to switch back from 25 fps mode.
  • PAL/NTSC Frame Rate System Reboots: Changing frame rate standards (e.g., between NTSC rates like 24/60/120 fps and PAL) triggers full system reboots.
