Zeiss announces three prime lenses for the Sony NEX and Fuji X system!

Zeiss (Click here) just announced the release of three new lenses for the Sony NEX and Fuji X systems. There will be three primes: 12mm f/2.8, 32mm f/1.8 and 50mm f/2.8. The lenses will have autofocus and be released in mid 2013 for a price around 1.000 Euro. The lenses will not be available for the m43 system. Dr. Michael Pollmann, Consumer Lenses Product and Program Manager said: “It would be possible for us to make lenses for Micro 4/3-bajonet as well but we have not made a decision on that yet.“

  1. All very well, but why would I buy Zeiss for my X-Pro 1 when they are (almost) replicating what Fuji has to offer?

Not only that, but the Fuji glass will cost about half the price, is of exceptional quality and available now, *except for the 14mm which will likely be on the shelves very soon.

On another note, availability of Zeiss lenses for the NEX system has been sparse to say the least, and that is after a year of announcing it! One of the reasons I bought what I did…..

  2. I just love this part:

“If current APS-C lenses were also used for the Micro 4/3-bajonet, we wouldn’t be able to achieve the best tradeoff between lens size (weight), and image quality.”

  3. Those who are still deciding between M4/3 and APS-C might give a shit. And why you wasting your time if you are not interested APS-C mirrorless-related news?

  4. Obviously these are absolutely unnecessary on m43 (in light of 12/2.0, 25/1.4 and 45/1.8), and Zeiss is not able to compete on price. 32mm is unnecessary on Fuji and NEX either.
I wonder if they will be AF, especially in Fuji mount? Does that mean Fuji released mount spec?

  5. “If current APS-C lenses were also used for the Micro 4/3-bajonet, we wouldn’t be able to achieve the best tradeoff between lens size (weight), and image quality.”

yeah right.. tradeoff between lens size and image quality.. tests already show the 75/1.8 is sharper than zeiss star lens for sharpness, the makro planar 100/2.

such an arrogant statement from above, it’s like saying their aps-c lenses are better and they won’t sacrifice quality for better weight. honestly, i can’t be bothered with zeiss lenses. they can stay out of m43. hear me zeiss? just stay out rather than embarrasing yourself later.

  6. When they say they wouldn’t be able to achieve the best tradeoff, I think they mean that they could have made a smaller lens with the same IQ if they only needed to cover the 4/3 sensor.

  7. Great for NEX, good for Fuji. Would have liked something on the tele side.
One thing: There is a difference between Zeiss and “Zeiss by Sony” the same way that there is a difference between Leica and “Leica by Panasonic”. Having said that all Zeiss lenses are not optically perfect. They have a kind of “personality” that is very appealing to me. I owned Zeiss lenses for Contax SLR and for Contax G: All excellent, especially color rendering and microcontrast.
Now we get Zeiss lenses designed for digital – will be interesting to see how they perform. Zeiss were really the last to acknowledge digital cameras at all….

  8. great news! i’d like to see a 23mm (35mm equiv) offering from zeiss on the x mount. so glad i got my x pro 1 (even at an painful early adoptor price… lol)

  9. I am glad I did not sell my NEX system just yet.
I guess I’d get the Zeiss 32mm lens as soon as its out here.
    thanks Zeiss and admin here.
