No joke…Hasselblad announces a NEX-7 alike camera for 5.000 Euro!

We will never know how the heck Hasselblad came to the idea to make a luxury version of the Sony NEX-7…name it “lunar”….. and price it at 5.000 Euro! Yes, It is a NEX-7 (same sensor and specs) with lot of weird design and expensive materials to cover it. Made for rich housewives I guess! The bad news is that this super “Lunar” camera also killed our hopes to see a new medium format mirrorless camera 🙁

Hasselblad and Sony also announced a new partnership that will lead to develop new products for the DSLR and Mirrorless Sony system.

  1. A re-skinned Sony NEX-7 for 5x the price? No thanks. This makes Leica pricing look reasonable in comparison as you at least get a real Leica in this price range. (they relegate their re-badged Panasonics to the lower end of the range) What a shame as they could have made a digital XPan panoramic or a MF mirrorless. I think this will only further dilute the Hasselblad brand name.

  2. It can only be a joke, right? Swedish sense of humor?

It will probably join the Sigma SD1 Wood Edition in the list of failed attempts at exclusive camera status.

  3. Well, it reminds me of the lamborghini TL700 android 2.3 phone selling at 2000€; is for rich customers, not for photographers (rich photographers into luxury overpriced stuff may like it too)

  4. This boggles my mind, in the words of Seinfeld “which ad wizard came up with this one”. Out of all the announcements I was looking forward too this was one i was most excited about. The possibility of having a Mamiya 7 like digital camera or an x pan digital. Instead they rip off another camera and charge $1000s more. The amazing thing, as Leica has shown, that if stupid rich people build it, stupid rich people buy it. This pretty much sums up this years “exciting” camera announcements.

  5. Damn, I would have liked to be there when it was revealed. I bet there must have been someone that just laughed out loud.
And MY GHOD how fugly it is, yikes !

This must be the start of a relationship between Sony and Hasselblad, like the one between Panasonic and Leica.
Rebadged, somewhat reskinned cameras sold at several times the price.
But 4 times the price ?! At least Leica is content with approximately 2 times the price.

  6. No, it makes perfect sense. Anyone who can read the news knows that the only people in the world right now who have disposable income are the super-rich. And since the super-rich already have every ordinary product they want, the only things they can use to set themselves apart from their friends are limited-production, out-of-the-ordinary, super-expensive products. They don’t especially need to care if their baubles are ugly (look at many of the limited-edition Leicas, or the back end of a Bentley) as long as they’re distinctive and hard to get. So it makes perfect sense for Hasselblad to sculpt this oddity to get some of their money…

  7. It is not easy to see, but it looks like the tilting LCD was sacrified.
Makes total sense. There has to be something tangible (apart from designer shape and ostrich penis leather grip) that distinguishes this HB Lunar from NEX-7. So the HB Lunar has an LCD that does not break off so easily.

  8. A good compromise to my opinion. Despite having been highly praised by the press, Pentax attempt with the K-01 wasn’t that successful. The technolgoy (evf) being not yet ready, this is a move in the right direction. In a couple of years and due to its fat shape, they will just have to modify the sensor and the evf. Believe me : I still have a Pentax 67 II with such wooden grip and this is the kind of material that lasts for years… 5000 euros is quite reasonable to my modest opinion.

  9. They are fantasizing. Create a somewhat slick body with a hot red color, and voila! You now have justification for a EUD 5,000+ camera?? oooooh la la! Got to have that over the NEX-6. (@J@)

  10. oh, that hurts so bad! I would refuse carrying around this uglyness even if someone gave me a lot of money for it. The real Punishment for People with big bank account and lack of taste. Praise the Sony RX1!

  11. I live in Göteborg (as Hasselblad), but luckily I wasn’t born here 🙂
    Is it April 1 today?
Wearing one of those is like having a t-shirt with “Here is an idiot” on you.
Will they sell any? What is Hasselblad in this camera?

  12. this is sad, very sad. but kind of makes sense, why would hasselblad, kill their mfdslrs with a mirrorless mfd camera system? but still sad

  13. Hilarious. Is this the ugliest camera ever made? The wood is horrible, the shape is horrible, the dials are horrible (they look like two upside down cup-cake cases)…

  14. Hasselblad have done what I previously thought was impossible: make Leica look like good value for money. If I thought I had enough spare money to buy this at €5000, then I’d have enough to go for the Leica system.

  15. What the F? (please excuse my language, but really.. WTF?)

For 5,000 Euro, they should have slapped in medium format sensor or something..

    What’s with the wood work?
    Is this an anti-vampire weapon?
Am I to stab vampire chest with this..?

Come on Hasselblad.. why are you doing this..?
You are one of the company that I hold utmost respect..

  16. Hasselblad doesn’t have high regard for their customers. They must really be full of themselves to offer up such nonsense.

They must be desperate for business. Too bad, it tarnishes my memories of using their film system.

  17. Wow! I mean WOW!!!
They have nuts, these Hasselblad guys, but do you know: I find it ingenious from design point of view; sort of a Bentley among the cameras. I will never have it – 5k is not my league, but if I had the money I’d buy it instead of a Leica – just as a status symbol 😉

  18. This is fking stupid. 5000 euro for a remake with a plastic lens. I might as well buy a digital back for 500CM to shoot some real photos.

  19. I really dont see where all the hate is coming from. This is just what the world needs , a wooden camera that floats!. A plug in bicycle to replace the battery would have been nice, maybe they can add it into the HEX8

  20. “Lost in translation”

A Hasselblad exec is at the Nex7 launch and sees a serious hot model touting the camera.

Hassie: “That is a serious hot model you got there.”
Sony: “Yeah, we’re all moonstruck about her”.
Hassie: “OMG, the things I can do for her. Talking about over the moon.”
Sony: “Better get in line, buddy”. See them curves… Hotcakes.
    Hassie checks his pockets.

Hassie: “I got 5000. Wadda you say?”
    Sony: “Hmmm, Okay”.

We don’t know what happened to the serious hot model.

  21. I guess it is supposed to be a top of the line Sony – a bit like Nokia’s Vertu brand. Sprinkle with diamonds, gold, and Hasselblad name then sell to Russian, Chinese, and other nuveau riche people. Distribute through selected Sony dealers in Airports as well as London, Paris, Beijing, Mosow shops where nuveau riche can feel seen spending by their perceived lesser compatriots 😉
I am really curious to see if the marketing concept works. It could I think.

  22. Hasselblad developed a grip. A very expensive one. And that´s about it. The rest is Sony NEX7. A joke for pimps and russian mafia bosses…

  23. i actually tried this camera at Photokina, and to be honest, it’s not that great to hold. the grip on this is such an weird shape that it doesn’t fit snuggly in your hand. also with the “housing” they’ve put on this camera it makes it extremely difficult to operate the rear controls etc…

i know it’s a Hasselblad for “reasonable” money, but i’ll rather stick to my Sony NEX and DSLRs….
