This is going to be a hell of a compact camera! We just got the specs via SAR and this is what the new camera can do:
20MP sensor (same as RX100/M2 models)
ISO 125-25600
24-70mm f/1.8-2.8 lens
Built in View finder (SVGA OLED Tru-Finder 1440k dots)
Tiltable screen (180 degrees up)
Record in XAVC S format (Same format of the Sony A7s but with no 4K output option).
Almost same size and weight as the current RX100/M2 models.
I have been told all other specs are the same of the current RX100II model.
Price is said to be around 800-850 Euro in Europe. Should be around $800-850 in USA (US price is my guess)
This will be the best compact camera ever made!

For sure sony knows how to please its customers. Nice EVF even in a small(er) sensored body. Well done.
Agreed. Only price is way too high. I´d buy this about $550, not $850. If pricing in Europe is 550 euro, it could be a deal, notwithstanding. Anyway, should be noted that although luminosity of tele end in this camera (70 mm eq) is better than in the previous version (100 mm eq), zoom reach is a lot shorther and DOF is about the same.
Yes, this is an expensive camera, but I think also quite a unique one. I would not buy it for the small sensor, but I think that, sensor apart, it has better specs than most m4/3 and aps-c bodies.
well done? same old sensor, limited range and a price as expensive as a dslr is not pleasing at all.
For me, this would be a great travel camera. I won’t use a camera without an EVF, because I’m becoming more long-sighted with age. I also wear contacts for shortsightedness, and I refuse to hold a camera out in front in the “smelly diaper” pose, or stop to put on glasses every time I want to take a photo. I’ve been considering buying the Panasonic GX7 (when it reaches runout prices) for travel, as a smaller alternative to my E-M1 with 12-50 & primes. Problem would be, what lens to put on it? The only truly compact option is the Panasonic 12-32 pancake, and that is relatively slow. The Panasonic 12-35 or Olympus 12-40 are bulky and very expensive.
I reckon I’ll eventually grab this camera.
Does anyone know when this will be available to buy? I need this in my hands june 1 for a new baby on the way. Anyone know how sony usually does things with preorders and timing? thanks
