Fuji’s first half 2015 (rumored) X-gear roadmap: 2 new X-series cameras, 1 more lens and a new flash!

 photo rumorroadmap_zps7e662a5f.jpg

Do you remember 2013, when Fujifilm released the X100S, X20, X-M1, X-A1, X-E2, XQ1, XF 14mm, XF 55-200mm, XF 27mm, XF 23mm, XC 50-230mm and XC 16-50mm? Well, times seem to be over, when Fujifilm frantically released X-gear after X-gear in order to build up an entire system from zero.

Maybe in 2015 we won’t see such an avalanche of new products as in 2013… but it could nevertheless be very interesting year, especially because…

… because of the Fujiflm X-PRO2. All the eyes (especially mine 😉 ) are focused on it. However, I try to keep my radar finely tuned also on the rest of possible Fuji X-gear.

So I’ve summed up rumors shared here on Fujirumors, focusing, for now, on the first half of 2015.

I did NOT include the X-PRO2 in the first half of 2015 list because, at the moment, release dates are simply too contradictory. They go from early or first half 2015 to second quarter and even to fall 2015 (at least they all say 2015 🙂 ). I’ll wait for trusted sources to find out the facts and will then post an update with the release date.

And of course, you can help my rumor sleuthing by sharing your knowledge. Just contact FR at fujirumor [at] gmail [dot] com (with fake email account, if you want), or 100% anonymously via rumor box (possibly with nick-name, so that I can eventually recognize you in future).

First half 2015 rumored X-gear

I think that CP+ this year (February 12 to 15) could be way more interesting than the CES. So what could come in these first 6 months? Here is the list:

2 new X-series cameras:

  • an entry-level camera: my personal guess, X-A1/X-M1 replacement/successor (trusted source – read rumor here)

  • a fixed lens camera (Anonymous Source – read rumor here). There were rumors in the past about an X70 (read rumor here), an entry level version of the X100 series with 23mm f/2.8 lens. It was definitely in Fuji’s plans in 2013, but such plans were dropped later on (information of trusted source). I have NOT heard of a comeback of the X70 until now, but it’s the only fixed lens camera I have heard about in the past. However, it could well be a completely new camera… if the anonymous source is right, of course.

    1. oh no, you’ve read it wrong – they’re replacing all point and shoot cams with mediocre X series cams, should sell better, it’s X series, innit? 😉

    2. While I don’t have the precise quote at hand, I thought the executive’s comment was more an acknowledgment that two different entry-level X cameras wasn’t the smartest idea, a fact previously obvious to anyone who didn’t work at Fuji. I’m wiling to be corrected, though.

      1. That’s probably what I was referring to. I stand behind my comment (here or other places) that Fujifilm has targeted the wrong customer; they are going for the price-conscious, system jumper, trying to gain market share, rather than targeting long-term investors who want a better-realised system, and want to shoot, and interact, differently with their cameras.

Entry-level is the antithesis to long-term customers.

    3. for clarity:
      1) FR shared a rumor that there will be an entry level X
      2) afterwards actioncamerarumors.com said that it will be also the last entry level camera

    4. Indeed, but Fuji ways are complicated and mysterious. The rise of better cameras inside the smartphones will only accelerate the end of compact digital cameras, but I know and entry-level Fuji X is much more that a simple compact digital camera. But still…

  1. I only read yesterday in another ‘rumours’ site that the X-Pro1 replacement was scheduled for the 1st quarter of 2015…………Little point in taking too much notice of any of them!

  2. For the fixed-lens camera, a lot of chatter at the DPR Finepix forum suggests that something along the lines of an X-S2, with perhaps a larger sensor, but definitely without the QC issues, would be very welcome. Most everyone there seems to think that, once those issues were cleared up, the X-S2 turned out to be the nicest bridge/superzoom cameras ever made, and most of the competition, while nice, misses a lot of things that Fuji got right with the X10 and X-S1 (in principle, if not in practice, thanks to issues like blooming sensors & lens droop).

Anything in the rumors suggesting the fixed lens is a super zoom or bridge, or is it more of a a low-end X100?

    1. An X-S2 with a 1″ sensor, more modern ergonomics and features like the current series of X cameras to rival the Panasonic FZ1000 and Sony RX10 would be great. Transfer those ideals to the XQ1 and X30 replacement which would be great afterwards

  3. The X70 rumour is interesting. But how about keeping the f/2 lens and having a EVF instead of the HVF. That should reduce cost quite a bit.

  4. If they make this, I will pay up to $1000:
X100T ergonomics, but without any viewfinder. Small like the Ricoh GR. I’d prefer f/2.0, but I will take 2.8 if that is what is necessary to make it truly pocketable.

    1. Sounds a lot like an X-A/M series camera with a small prime lens would get you at least 85% there, especially if they really bring out a successor with improved AF this year.

  5. I think the issue with any X Pro 2 is that the XT-1 is selling so well, and is such a great flagship model already. And the design and styling of the XT 1 fits so well within the Fuji retro model.

Fuji may still be debating what they want to do with the X Pro line, or even if its necessary to continue. Any upgrades they could put into an update of the XT-1 with the exception of the hybrid VF and that didn’t work so great in the X Pro 1 using interchangeable lenses.

If an X Pro 2 surfaces with updated sensor, let’s face it, most would buy it for the sensor. Hence you could just release an XT-2 with the same sensor and get the same sales, probably more because it seems people really love the XT-1 design.
So does it make more sense to release an XT 2 vs an X Pro 2? That is the question.

    1. I’ve read several times that the X-Pro1 was a very mediocre seller – warmed up on Fotokina, a lot of people stepped into the X-series back in 2012 but also left Fuji weeks or months after that being extremely frustrated by the firmware and very overhyped performance in the field. I don’t believe the a X-Pro2 sales can and will ever overtake that of the XT-1, it will always remain a much more specialist, small niche camera appealing to RF-photographers, thus generating again the highest expectations. The native built quality of the X-Pro1-body itself was also not fully to the same standard as the X100-range or the X-T1 (which is clearly very different). Well, what is Fuji’s plan now with this mysterious X-Pro2? We can assume it will be positioned close to 1800-2000$. In this case people won’t accept the glorified compact camera manufacturing quality again we experienced in the X-Pro1 and first badge of lenses. As I expressed a few times, stepping up to APS/C 24MP is a good try but just not enough – if it can be something close to Leica M (here we go again) there’s a chance buyers will show up – but if it’s just brushing up the current X-Pro1 to a more X-T1 alike kind of quality – I’ll speak for myself but afraid many will think the same – I’m not sure I’ll be able to keep Fuji as a parallel system. What’s the value of spending that amount of money and getting a camera that is again based on not the most recent Sony crop sensor with a modest ISO and DR-performance versus 2015-standards? A small suggestion Fuji, don’t make it a CMOS but back a slightly higher MP CCD with extraordinary image properties. Many M-owners don’t seem to like the CMOS colors and picture aspect of the M.240, quite a few even went back to the old faithful M9 for that reason – a lot of Leica-potentials with a not enough brilliant bank account might be interested in this kind of Fuji.

    2. One more possibility – the X-Pro2 will be shaped like the X-T1. Can really no one imagine that the name “X-Pro” must not neccessarily mean a RF design? Today when they will win DSLR professionals for Fuji gear, they have to give them something they will be able to work, and the X-T1 has proven that this design is the right one.

      1. I like the design of the X-T1 (which I own), but…

… but X-PRO2 must have RF design. Otherwise I’ll close FR ;).

  6. I agree with one more thought, in terms of 2 products. I am pretty sure they will merge the xt1 and xpro 1 line. This will likely be an improved xtrans sensor, at a higher price point geared to professionals. I doubt there will be an ovf on a new high end flagship camera.

    1. As beautiful as OVF is, I think you might be right, but I love the range finder feel of Xpro1, it feels more solid in hand than Xt1 as well as I love that most people assume it is film (less likely to get stolen). If Xpro2 had X100t corner EVF focus display I would use OVF a lot more often!!! Wouldn’t you want the XPro2 to be XPro1 body weathersealed with all the Xt1 and X100t features and new sensor?

  7. I don’t want a new entry X camera. There are already 2 fantastic ones the X-M1 and the X-A1 and they have not yet received the due attention by Fuji. I want a serious upgrade for my X-M1 before upgrading this gorgeous gear! What are they waiting for?
