the Fujifilm EF-42 is one of the Fuji flashes available at the market. More flash units are needed…. a new flash will come in spring 2015
_ _ _
We now have the first confirmation about an upcoming Fuji Flash… and some more specs. In fact, a trusted source just shared with all of us the following information:
A new flash will be coming out in spring (previous rumors from a new source said „within the next few months“)! According to the trusted source, the guide number will be 50. It will also have wireless control ability.
I remind you that previous rumors shared on Fujirumors said if will also have HSS capability.

That’s the best Fuji-related rumor I’ve heard in a while. I’ll have four of those, please.
agree….been waiting a long time!
Some will disparage the Guide No. 50, but remember, the cameras are small and need a smaller flash. If wireless is true, that is very good news. They are probably getting the maximum amount of power out of the small footprint. Fuji is listening.
A fast X-Sync is much more important than a high guide number.
The X100 line is great in this regard.
Agree. Wish some one figures out a way for an electronic flash with max sync speed of even 1/500. Would be so nice for outdoor flash/strobe users.
It is long known and called a leaf shutter.
But how fast a leaf shutter goes? And all the lenses have to have leaf shutters. Electronic shutter like in CCD cameras (original canon 1d, Nikon D40 etc) let you go 1/500, 1/1000. Now imagine if CMOS sensor electronic shutter allowed flash syc at any speed without all this HSS mode. Best thing for someone shooting strobes outdoors IMHO.
That’s what HSS is about – besides the maximum sync speed is 1/180s in FP mode you can use flash at speeds up to 1/4000s (I guess the new electronic shutter speeds above the mechanical will not be usable with HSS).
X100 line syncs up to 1/2000s because it uses a leaf shutter in the lens and even this one can’t go up to the camera’s maximum speed.
HSS can go above maximum X-sync because it uses a series of multiple flash shots, but for that it’s necessary that both the camera and the flash are ready for it.
HSS does nothing when you trying to fight the ambient. You loose lot of power in HSS mode. In case of Canon 580ex series just enabling HSS mode will lower you power by anywhere from 2 stops to 2.5 stops. Then increase ss by 1 stop, power will drop linearly with it. So HSS is no free lunch like some on the web say.
totally agree, fast X-Sync and fully articulating is the key. I would also add: simple to operate. I love Sony flashes and Canon flashes they are easy. Olympus FL600R and any Nikon flash of recent years, I have to have a manual instruction and ask google on how to operate the damn flash. That is why Nissin i40 is so great with simple manual controls.
I’d say 50m is plenty.
Are you sure the guide number is in metres it could be in imperial measurements ie feet.
It is the standard, also for Fuji. Even the tiny EF-X20 has a guide number of 20m, why should they introduce a new one with less?
Good news, I was about to pull the trigger on the Nissin i40, but rather await whats’ coming from Fuji.
Then do you really need one? Spring is a long time away, not to mention this being a rumor and the time until actually available.
HSS capability? Then we should expect firmware update – hopefully for X-E1 too.
Wireless control? OH YES PLEASE!!!!! Thank you Fujifilm!!!
Wireless, but with the camera flash as on DSLausoRs, or radio-controlled ?
I’m not sure about this but aren’t there some third party manufacturers who wanted to bring some fuji compatible flashes to the market?
I am currently using an old manual flash, works great for me, you just have to play a bit with settings to get good results. As far as i know, the yungnuo flashes work also with the Fuji X system, or am i wrong about this?
No one as yet produces a fully compatible flash unit for the Fuji X system. Just about any modern flash unit will be ok and will work in fully manual mode. Information I have obtained has stated Metz have no plans for producing a fully compatible X system flash but Yongnuo will be releasing their i40 very soon which will be fully compatible. This will of course be close competition for the new Fuji when released.
As for myself I use up to 4 Olympus FL 50 units fired by Yongnuo remote triggers, once levels are set perfect results.
Correction for Yongnuo i40 read Nissin i40
Yep – I’ve got 3 Yongnuo’s that work perfect on my XE1. Sure it’s manual, but once you’re dialled in, its easy.
Finally……
And will it be made by Nissin? 😉
No.
…we’re all ears.
…Sunpak?
GOod news if it’s true. The biggest $US1,300 question is for HSS suppport, whether Fuji can update its TTL technology with firmware on existing X-T1 camera or it will mean you will need to buy a X-T2. I’m afraid the answer will be new camera.
Don’t see why not. The hard part of HSS is the flash, not the camera.
really? Explain if you’re so sure.
The way I understand HSS, the trick is to make the flash fire consecutive pulses to illuminate the whole sensor equally. Should be enough to transmit the number of pulses and when to start.
That’s only half the story: The camera itself would need to output its sync signal using a different timing. I’ve posted a more detailed explanation here: http://www.fujix-forum.com/index.php/topic/29389-anything-to-dislike-about-ef-42/page-2#entry326558
thats half a year away. that’s eternity in current digital camera/lens rat race… nobody is going to to wait for it if i40 somehow manages HSS
Well, the point being is, that the i40 IS NOT going to “manage the HSS” without cam-side support from Fuji. No HSS firmware from Fuji == no HSS at all.
Right, because we have not been waiting for i40 for 18 months?
Did you know about i40 18 months ago?
EF42 is the biggest and heaviest flash that I’m willing to use on camera with Fuji X system. As for wireless OCF… In that case, there are bunch of affordable, powerful and reliable flashes out there, many of which have a remote power control. I don’t care about TTL with OCF.
In short: thanks, but no.
Sounds like the EF-42 is fine for you, so you have nothing to complain about.
From this and other comments you left @ FR it sounds like you’re an employee at Fujifilm UK marketing department. Obviously you are not, but you sound like one – “STFU and carry on”.
…I have a lot to complain about regarding Fuji’s half-assed flash system, especially when it comes to the rear sync and third party strobes.
Not at all, there are plenty of improvements I’d like to see from Fuji.
On the flash side, a more robust flash than the EF42, without being too heavy, would be a good start. Radio trigger OCF would be nice to have as well, especially if the camera can have the trigger inbuilt.
In the mean time, I manage fine with the EF42 when I need on camera TTL flash, and 3rd party flashes set manually for OCF, with eBay radio triggers. It really doesn’t inhibit what I can achieve with the camera, the improvements I mention would just make things a bit easier.
As for you, all you do is complain from what I can see TBH. You just seem to be the sort of person who criticises everything fuji does, blaming them for your own shortcomings. If you hate them so much, why not just get another camera, it would surely make you happier, and we could all benefit from not having your trolling negativity on every thread here.
I think it’s healthy to speak up one’s concerns when it comes to the growing camera system. Otherwise, whoever does social media analysis at Fuji, may jump into conclusion that all people want is a weatherproof full frame camera, and everything else is shiny.
It’s not. Let me repeat myself: Fuji’s flash system sucks. Not just their line of flashes, but how their cameras work with third party strobes.
As for you, I suggest working on your technique. Start with something smaller in size, like a bar coaster, gradually work your way up to stools – and only then try turning tables.
How in the world the X-system will replace the DSLR cameras? Even they can’t produce a decent Flash system or the 3rd party! Get real guys!
The Fuji-Flash System is still kind of joke, especially compared to how nice the rest of the system is. They are not bad, but they lack all the nice and helpful functions (like HSS, wireless, etc. pp) all the other manufactures have for very long time.
I also don’t want to have a big monster, and the EF-42 is a cheap bunch of grap and not worth it’s price – sorry to say it so clear.
The normal TTL-protocol of Fuji is fine, direct flash works nice enough, but that’s not enough.
The Nissin-offer seems to be the best deal at the moment, once it is available.
Daniel
It depends on the wireless connection type. Nikons optical communication is a pain. Radio channel please
Spring 2015 has been and gone, so where’s the new system flash? A real weak point in the Fuji system and no sign of something with a specificaiton like the Metz 64 AF1 (just as an example) for the Fuji system..
