(FT5) Panasonic and Olympus announcement both on Monday September 17th!

Both, Olympus and Panasonic will announce their new Micro Four Thirds stuff on Monday September 17th. Yes, exactly in one week!

Panasonic will announce the GH3 (full specs here), the 35-100mm f/2.8 X lens and very likely show 2-3 more prototype lenses behind a thick glass. One of them should be a fast tele lens.
Olympus will announce the E-PM3 and E-PL5 PEN cameras with same E-M5 sensor. There will be a 15mm f/8.0 lens-cap, the 60mm macro and a 12mm Black limited edition lens. May more prototype lenses will be shown.
More m43 stuff is coming via Sigma, SLRmagic and other third party companies.

On the competition front we know that:
Pentax will announce an unexciting new Q10 camera this week (more info here).
Sony will announce the NEX-6 and three new NEX lenses on Wednesday September 12th (more info here).
Samsung will surprisingly not announce any new NX stuff (more info here).
Nikon and Canon will have no major mirrorless related news. The only interesting thing may be their cheap FF DSLR which will set a new mark on the price of FF bodies (more info here).
Hasselblad may announce a large sensor mirrorless system camera on September 18th (more info here).

  1. Very exciting. Great to have a date. Not that it will stop us checking here many times before hand.

Admin, would love to hear what else has been improved on the PENs. And any hints on when they will be available for purchase. Olympus, I have your money.

      1. very interested in epl-5 here:
any clue about the ergonomy, size and form factor? also tilt/touch screen? ibis?
i hope it’s an upgraded epl3 with omd’s sensor and screen and hopefully some grip.

          1. The E-M5 group has only 315 daily users and it has the most daily users of any Olympus camera .To get that low with Nikon you have to drop down to 17th in the most popular Nikon list with the D70 having 328.The Nikon D90 alone has more daily users than the top 70 Olympus cameras put together. Same story with Canon their 5Dmk2 alone has more daily users than the top 70 Olympus cameras put together. The Canon DSLR group has 112000 members so you will have to work a bit harder to come up with “facts”that support your idiotic claims

  2. Looks like Sony is gearing to hit one out of the park this year!… I hope micro four thirds will be able to compete in this arena of new mirrorless and cheap full frame DSLR cameras. Still, I’m having high hopes for Panasonic and Olympus…

Admin, still no leaked pics of the GH3, or the new PENs?

    1. I think, they definitely will be able to compete.

A cheap full frame DSLR camera won´t be really cheap. I think it will cost around 2000 euros. And it will be as big as any other full frame DSLR camera. I don´t want that bulk anymore.

Another thing is Sony NEX. I think the NEX6 will be very very interesting. But unfortunately there are only very few lenses at the moment. And the lenses are rather heavy and big.

        1. Posts that include a link to a site that isn’t ‘pre-approved’ will always have to wait for moderation. That is one of the reasons why this place isn’t a total spam heaven.

Considering the fact that the NEX line uses a bigger sensor, it is physically impossible for its lenses to be as small as m4/3 lenses. Thats simply a matter of physics, and nothing Sony can do anything about. The only real question here is if NEX and m4/3 lenses are currently as small as technically possible.

        1. seems to have made it to the forum headline. anything else you can share? don’t worry, no one else is reading this old thread.

  3. Nothing exciting, nothing new.

    1) 35-100 was announced (as prototype) probably a year ago.
    2) The same with 60/2.8 macro – old/new – we know this lens for half a year.
    3) 15/8 is usless.
    4) Prototypes means real lenses without a year or longer (like 35-100).
    5) New PEN cameras – old body with new sensor. Nothing exciting.
    6) GH3 – probably good, but VERY EXPENSIVE.
    7) Sigma will make lenses for APS with micro43 mount.
    8) Third party companies – means manual lenses, without electronic information for body, maybe not dedicated directly for micro43 (but version of APS lenses). The real dedicated lenses from third parties for micro43 are 2 Voightlanders and 1 Samyang (fisheye). If someone will make manual macro lens (1:1), even slow (e.g. f/4) and cheap – it would be intresting.

    Where is 25/1.8 from Oly?
    Where is 17/1.4?
    Where is 150/2.8?
    where is 14-54 f/2.8-3.5 or 12-60 f/2/8-4?
    Where is micro 50-200 f/2.8-3.5 (or f/4)?
    Where is micro 70-200 f/4?

      1. Are you saying you wouldn’t like these things? There’s a lot that would. Compared to Sony, m43 does seem a bit quiet. Wait and see though.

    1. I sort of agree in facts but am not so negative. New sensor in pens will be great. There has been a lack of info about the EPM – I hope it goes even smaller (this is what this camera is about) to make the most pocketable MFT camera.

It would be interesting if either Oly or Panasonic could cook up an ultra fast AF lens- f1-1.2 ish. Voigtlanders are great but are too heavy for me and a niche product. I am guessing Oly may produce something (eg 25mm f1) to go with the rumoured pro camera.

    2. What’s very expensive? The DMC-GH3 will be much cheaper for video than the Canon 5DMkIII and will likely do stills competently, hopefully as well as the Olympus E-M5.

Schneider will probably continue to be only one of two third party companies involved in full electronic connections for their lenses, unfortunately.

  4. Dear admin,

    <3

Waiting for the GH3.. Really hoping one of those prototype lenses is a weather sealed 14-140 that was mentioned in a previous rumor (with low rating).. Bonus points for Power Zoom implementation..

    1. Yes , I would like an updated 14-140 lens, though I also have some of the lovely fast primes for mFT { 12mm ,45mm and 75mm}.I find the combo of GH2 with the 14-140 and the 20mmm covers a lot of ground and it is an excellent travel set up.
So I am looking forward to the GH3 and would be very happy if an updated 14-140 was announced.

  5. Hi Admin,
A question on how to read this phrase,
“12mm Black limited edition lens. May more prototype lenses will be shown.”
I read it two ways ‘Many more’ or ‘Maybe more’, probably the former but can be read either way.

  6. Only the GH3 is exciting and only if they get it right. The show already is for Sony (A99, NEX-6 -and 5R-, XR1, new NEX lenses with IS, including a “pancake zoom” and an ultra-wide zoom) and for Nikon if, and only if, they really can launch a FF version of the D7000 at $1500.

I really hope they get it right with the Panny.

  7. If the GH3 isn’t what it should be for video, what would become the go to camera for video shooters? Stick with GH2???

  8. Where is equivalent 35mm (17mm f/1.4 or 17mm f/1.8)?
    Where is cheap 25mm f/1.8?
Or 10mm f/2.8, or fast long tele?
I don’t care about black, gold, pink or other colour version…

Sony will show some new lenses for NEX system, and FF compact. Fuji EX1 and some lenses (and roadmap).

  9. It looks like Sony’s products are more innovative than the rest .
GH3 although great but is not for me , I aimed for highend rangefinder camera .
Right now , I only interest on the prime tele lens from Pana .
So secret till now still don’t have the specs .
Hopefully it can create another F1.4 such as the summilux .

    1. If you want rangerfinder your only option is to go by the really expensive Leica M8/M9. No other current digital cameras are rangefinders.

  10. I am curious what thirdparty lens makers are going to present at photokina. I hope that sigma, samyang, tamron etc are going to make some sharp affordable lenses for m 4/3. Lenses from Schneider and zeiss will probably be dream lenses but way over my budget.

  11. Sigma will make something dedicated for APS, with strage focal length equivalent for micro43, too big, too dark for micro43.
Samyang will make something manual maybe, if it will be macro it will be nice.

  12. Only one week before Photokina and still no leaked list of specifications and photos of the new PENs. Olympus is doing a good job of keeping this close hold and the suspense high.

  13. Still cannot come to terms with the just 1.74 million pixel EVF and the just 0.62 million pixel rear screen. Almost all of the serious competitors already can do more than these specs. (moreover, even G5 has higher resolution on LCD).

    Are these numbers 100% sure?

    1. +1
Even Fuji, known to price its products at a premium, has a 2+ million dot EVF and will probably sell for less than the GH3. If the Panny EVF rumors are true, it would seem odd that this would be the result of Panasonic’s attempt of catering toward professionals.

  14. Man, you need to stop listening to the voices in your head no one mentioned the Nikon 1 system . You posted numbers for a tiny group that includes all Olympus digital slr and mirrorless cameras as if it was significant .

AS for the whopping 2500 member’s in the E-M5 group the Nikon D7000 group alone has 17,200 members http://www.flickr.com/groups/d7000-club/
Even the Nikon D800 group has 4864 members which for a camera 2.5x the cost is not to bad..Despite all the propaganda that you post mFT is still a fraction of camera users

    1. So what is your point? I use an E-M5. I am happy with it as I use it. Why on earth do you think I care the least about the number of “members” in some virtual “user group”??

    2. @deed
The D7000 has been out for nearly 3 years which is 5 times longer, so the E-M5’s 2500 members x5 would be 12500 so not so bad aagainst 17000 is not so bad….
Why mention the Nikon1 well this is a mirror less site.

  15. i’m starting to sense a shift in the milc market. as the compact and phone markets gradually transition toward models like the rx100 and nokia 808, it’s going to get harder and harder for the average system shopper to justify m43 or nikon 1. it’s the same reason no one owns a pentax q. the ability change lenses is great, but without a sensor that differentiates from compacts, most people will choose aps-c instead. this is why with so much to time to consider their options, most other manufacturers (canon, fuji, samsung, sony, pentax) went with aps-c. that’s actually good news for m43 though, because it’s going to drive prices down for m43 gear over the next few years, until finally the market shifts away from m43 completely maybe five years from now. so enjoy the golden years of m43! and if you have a nikon 1, well… better sell it while it has value.

  16. i still think it was smart for panny and olympus to use the 4/3 sensor, though, because it allowed them to get a big jump on the competition in mirrorless and grab a bunch of marketshare (because probably the state of tech at the time made aps-c too difficult in terms of lens/body size and manufacturing cost). i think m43 can still hold marketshare for 5 more years, and even longer if panasonic can continue to push the limits of tiny lenses and tiny bodies, to take maximum possible advantage of the sensor size difference with aps-c. right now i don’t really feel they’re doing anything amazing sizewise, except maybe for the x pancake zoom. but sony has already produced one that is apparently similar in size.

    1. @a
Yr argument holds only for the Nikon 1 and Pentax Q customers have to see and believe the difference and the cameras have to be aspirational at the right price compared to what they already have or could have… they do none of this. I said all of this at the Nikon 1 launch.
MRT does meet all these simple needs….
