HOT! Sony NEX-5R and NEX-6 images leaked!!!

And here we have the first real images of the new NEX-5R and NEX-6 cameras. Click on the pictures to see the full size version! These are pictures found by the nice guys from chinese.vr-zone.com. As a reminder. Sony may announce the new cameras and lenses on August 28th. This is the list I got from reliable sources:

NEX-5R: Looks almost exactly like the [shoplink 8452]NEX-5n[/shoplink] and has the flip screen from the NEX-F3. It has a completely newly designed 16 Megapixel APS-C sensor with Phase Detection AF pixels. It has WiFi connectivity and APP support. You can surf on Internet with it. Price around $700 with kit lens.
NEX-6: It’s a mini [shoplink 8454]NEX-7[/shoplink] with integrated viewfinder. Compared to the NEX’7 it has an EVF with less resolution and same newly designed 16 Megapixel APS-C sensor. It has WiFi connectivity and APP support. Price between the NEX-5R and NEX-7 (NEX-7 is currently priced at $1200 at Amazon so my guess is around $950 and $1000).
Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6: It is a pancake zoom with OSS and power zoom.
Sony 11-18 f/4.0: Normal (non pancake) zoom.
Sony 35mm f/1.8: Fast non expensive prime lens as big as the Sigma 30mm lens.

Stay tuned on SAR!!! Don’t miss the next big Sony news and follow SARs RSS feed or follow me on Twitter and join the super friendly Facebook comunity!

P.S.: In moment like this I am happy to see again that my rumors were correct 🙂

    1. What’s that 55-210mm lens doing there?

Otherwise a cleverly picked new set of three new lenses, I would say. The 11-18mm, 16-50mm and 35mm complement the system nicely.

Now, bring on the G ‘high grade standard zoom’, please 🙂

    2. yea right!! that is one ugly baby! contour lines are no longer smooth and sleek, especially how the dial looks compared to styling of the rest of the body. looks rugged yes, but uglier and uglier.

the only goo thing from this design is that the video record button is angled, so it doesnt always accidentally get pressed on now.

    1. You’re kidding right? You realize the picture shows a plain ‘ol “Single pin hotshoe”. Worthless for TTL flash. If I need a std hotshoe, I’ll pick up a cheap adapter.

      1. Guys, and what is this PASM dial good for? I always had it at all of my cameras, but when I purchased NEX-7, I have realised that I do not need it at all. More than 98% of shots I take in Aperture priority mode and when I need to change the mode, I can access it in meny very quickly.
There are much more important buttons to have then on the camera, that’s what I have learned…

  1. I thought I was first.. Well is the dial in the 5R is control dial ??. Well I like the NEX6 it looks more versatile !!.

  2. I like the way they fitted flash, flash hotshoe and viewfinder on the NEX-6;
I will have to wait to see what improvements the 5R has over the 5n, which may be possible to get pretty cheap in a few weeks 😉

    1. Here we say: he who asks too many questions won’t achieve much.

In other words: why ask for permission first???

  3. The leakers shirt can clearly be seen in the NEX-6 screen reflection. The moderator of this site may want to blur it out to protect her sources.

    1. Those are not my pics and not pics from my sources. I think they are from a chinese agency that usually does register WiFi products.

  4. I like the 5R a lot, not sure about the 6 with only one dial. Would have to see it next to a 7, it looks bigger

  5. Save ALL THOSE PICTURES BEFORE SONY TAKE THEM DOWN!

btw…I’m in for the NEX-6.. I hope it comes with the A-Mount UI!

  6. Awesome!
    – EVF
    – Bi-navi control system
    – ISO hotshoe
    – Physical mode dial
    – Pop-up flash

I hope the new sensor will be as awesome as how the camera looks!

      1. Especially when it’s the old one – you know, like the hotshoe used before the era of wireless flashes, ADI, etc. Notice that it doesn’t have any pins besides the one responsible for triggering.
Bring back iISO, or make new hotshoe that actually brings improvements (eg. radio triggering with full multi-group ratio control from the level of camera).

  7. With the gap between models being so small, it seems like Sony is just playing roulette to decide which cameras get which features. They’re all over the place.

  8. Everything seems to be ok, I just hope the new designed sensor will keep the microlens technology, or even better, that we can use our M-mount lenses…

  9. Looks interesting. One thing though, the NEX 5R looks to be all plastic (at least the visible body panels). Didn’t the 5N have a casting mostly made out of metal?

    1. It looks the same to me, still metal.

NEX-5R has a Dual-Navi now, it seems. Yay! One extra Fn button and one new dial. That is pretty cool.

Nex-6 is even better, with mode dial and HotShoe and EVF. I might not be able to stop myself from buying one of these, more likely the 6.

        1. But the 6 looks like its made with the same material as the F3, hardened plastic. See the photos and the reflections and see that its way more matt than the 5R.

  10. I had no doubt your rumors were going to be correct. The nex 6 looks awesome. I may have to sell my 5n and replace with the nex 6. I can’t wait for you to get a hold of some 99 images and more info.

  11. I think the Nex 6 will be a big seller. It’s taken them long enough but Sony is also coming out with some decent lenses.

  12. Did anybody notice that the Chinese source page shows a lens called “SEL1650 (E16-50mm)” which looks exactly like the SAL1650 and therefore would be an F2.8 lens?

I think it is a mistake, though.

  13. @admin

For the love of GOD, please stop with nothing but NEX crap!!!! It’s been more than four days since you’ve posted ANYTHING with the a99.

What are you abandoning the a99?

    1. John you’re such an interesting person to not say something…less gentle. Patience. You want the admin to post again what we know already? Better wait when more rumors comes up. Patience…

    2. WTF John..just because now you know nex is better than that m43 that you just bought, doesn’t mean the admin should stop the glory of nex and hurt you even more. Be strong, kid

    3. @JohnThomas:

I too want Alpha-mount info, but SAR can only deliver to us what gets delivered to him… NEX is where the rumors are coming, Alpha-mount isn’t (or rather… as I understand it, he has some rumors that are “pending confirmation” before posting).

Take yer chill-pill, dude. It’s just rumors, it ain’t worth the swearing and the blood-pressure, eh?

  14. OMG didn’t noticed it at first, but they changed the movie rec button placement! Good good…

That NEX-6 looks a bit wierd…I mean, Not finished, interesting there is no Sony logo. But so far, is looking good! And in that hot shoe, seems there are some contacts forward, in the shadowed area

  15. looks like some plastic mock up made by enthusiast, I don’t believe these are the real deal. The whole design just doesn’t make sense to me, e.g. 5R no built-in flash? not quite align with F3’s development.. And why on earth would they make a mode dial on the 6 but not just any dial to make a “bi-navi cost down”? Besides, the F3 got a separate SD card bay, these two goes all the way back to the old approach?

  16. Wow…i hope it is not so real
    1. NEX-6 is mini NEX-7 but without bi-navi control system
    2. ISO hotshoe???

there is another notices that E16-50 from the origin website i snot a pancake lens…

    so disappointing….

    1. I agree, the NEX-6 in particular looks strange. It looks like the top part is just glued on and the retro mode dial is out of place. I could believe it’s the real thing but I have to think it’s not finished.

  17. So the SONY astro turfers are out in force for these “new” cameras that look pretty much like a NEX 3. How cool is that?????

  18. Okay, so I’m on a borrowed computer and the screen isn’t good, but I couldn’t see enough control wheels on the 6. I like the two top dials of the 7.

Is it confirmed that the 6 will abandon the Minolta/Sony hotshoe so that I’d need an adapter to use my flashes? Not a deal-breaker, but not favourable either. 🙁

  19. Hmm, this is a tough one. Which to get? If the NEX-6 comes in at $1000, then it might be worth it to get the NEX-5R and the EVF attachment. It would be $50 more, but a higher-res EVF. And you can remove it and swivel the screen to face forward.

But the NEX-6 will have the hotshoe and a mode dial. You just can’t face the screen forward, and the EVF isn’t as high quality.

Otherwise, there is little separating the two models.

  20. No AF/MF button. I can’t purchase any camera that doesn’t have that feature.

Looks nice though. Surely this will make a lot of people happy.

I just discovered on my NEX-7 that it’s not always my finger accidentally hitting the video button. Most of the time it’s the strap lug bending around and pressing it. This new NEX-6 placement of video button could make that better, or worse.

    1. Nex has it in the menu AF/MF…or keep it at DMF. Autofocus will kickin and you can do manual finetuning with MF.

      1. oh man DMF is f@#$%^g stupid.
First, it will refocus every time you want to make a shot.
Second, you still get that annoying AF lag.
Third, sometimes focus is unable to lock at all.

  21. Hi again
I dont understand why people would upgrade to the NEX6 and not the NEX 7. The price difference is small. Nex 6 will sell for what, $1000? You can pick up the NEX 7 with 1855 kit lense for around $1300.
    Bye

    1. Because the Nex-7 sensor is not as good as the Nex-5N with M-mount lenses…. Then, some kind of Nex-7 body with the Nex-5N sensor would be the perfect match, get it?

    2. Personally have longed for a real mode dial on a NEX and a second wheel since the beginning. WiFi I couldn’t really give a damn about, but could somehow be useful, especially for timelapse/remote trigger support and tethering (isn’t everyone always whinging about the lack of tethering here?).

Then there is also the PDAF on sensor along with the CDAF for hybrid AF. Probably touchscreen, though not a definite.

Potentially extensible OS, I don’t want to say ‘apps’ because that is the dumbest idea to ever be floated for a camera. But ‘macros’ that can be integrated into the existing OS that essentially enable custom functions to be added, rather than having to dump a complete new firmware on there. Some examples where this might be useful include –

      Adding timelapse functionality
      Adding different bracketing options
Possibly adding different frame rate options
Adding new scenes modes and filters
      Adding new custom colour configs
      Changing JPEG engines
      Add new codec options
      TIFF output
      Smart Teleconverter in RAW
      Config custom buttons
Focus pulling setting focus points and speed using touch screen
      Change flash configurations
      Options to change information displays

      Much much more.

And while Android would be the dumbest idea in the history of stupid ideas, this sort of platform to me seems like a very promising idea… so long as it is NOT Android!

    3. You can buy an extra lens (like the 50mm 1.8, or the rumores 30mm 1.8) for the $300,– you save on the Nex6.
When rumors are correct you get the PDAF on chip as an extra (maybe faster/more accurate AF)
      When rumors are correct…

  22. Awesome Photos Andrea!! Great to finally see what were getting here.

First off, they Nex-5R still has that cheesy tri-pod mount which is disappointing to me. I was really hoping Sony would fix that. I also see the Nex-6 tri-pod mount does not look beefed up much either? The Nex-F3 has a beefed up tri-pod mount point area, so I wonder what gives?

Very surprised to see the standard Hot Shoe on the Nex-6, but like the new design from what I can tell. The video record button placement looks much better than the Nex-7 😉

    Jay

    1. You’ll notice that is NOT a “standard” hot shoe. It looks to have ports on the front horizontal end and the three dots around the sync look to be locking pins, rather than data transmitters. The front port looks to be the data transmitter.

Hope I’m mistaken about that. But I’ve blown the photos up in photo shop and that’s the way it looks to me.

Highly doubtful that wireless slave companies will rush to make TTL/HSS compatible units for this. It’s just another “special” proprietary shoe. Hope this comes with an iISO adapter in box.

      1. This IS ISO hotshoe.

What iISO hotshoe? Every manufactures use different data points, they are not compatible with each other.

        1. Did you not notice the data ports on the front of the shoe? That’s way beyond standard ISO. 3rd parties will have to design for that to make HSS/TTL radio slaves. They’ll have to make a special ISO foot for full functionality. No easier to do than making one for iISO, which we already have HSS/TTL radio slave for.

          1. I wouldn’t place a lot of bets on it – still doesn’t seem to match the previous descriptions of a new hotshoe. But… we’ll see.
Still – this whole camera kinda looks like a mock-up more then actual NEX.

  23. Waited so long at last the ideal Nex Body is out – Nex 6, 16 Mega sensor with viewfinder. Buying this together with the Pancake Zoom, thank you Sony! And Andrea too!

  24. No pop-up Flash on the NEX-5R ? Really. Can someone confirm this or am I missing something. Andrea, you expert opinion on this ?

  25. The nex 5r top right button looks like one f nex7 tri-navi. So maybe it is customisable? While nex 6 top right button is just a mode dial.

    1. One from* nex7 … Not one f nex7… Pardon me for the typo. Lol

Ya. U r right. There’s a wheel under the mode dial. Looks cool..!

  26. The follow-up questions will probably be:

    – Now what for the next NEX-7? The interfaces are inconsistent across the board. Though I doubt many will own multiple NEX bodies.
    – When will be see a new flash for the new hot shoe?
    – Please show picture(s) of the hot shoe adapter.
    – Does the NEX-6 have a touch screen?
    – Are the 5R and 6 screens the same has the 5N, or is there an improvement (not that an improvement is needed, just wondering)?
    – How much more of an improvement will we see in the AF speed?

    Thanks for all your work.

    1. I already own two, and I use them professionaly. Magazines across the world have taken my photographs taken with the NEX 7 and 5n, no doubts and no questions.

  27. Is it only me or i think it’s better Tri-Navi than that big dial, and the hotsoe hopefully can be cover… for NEx-6… seems it become bulky already

  28. I can’t put money on this, but one thing that seems rather reassuring in the designs here is something I consider very important; the battery doors imply that the same battery will be used (as it has been in the previous generations). This is something I appreciate highly in a company, and that I hated with Canon and Nikon, who focused in profiting from battery sales too. Thank you, Sony.

  29. Wo NEX 6 is the champion! Got everything we look forward to.

It would be more price and feature attractive than NEX 7 and is a great camera against Canon EOM

    1. What makes you think that’s standard? The data ports are on the front end. No easier to make dedicated HSS/TTL radio slave for than Minolta 25 year standard iISO. It will require 3rd parties to still make a special foot.

And without an AF/MF button on NEX-6, there will be plenty of folk wanting the NEX-7.

  30. Seems the hotshoe has the NEX accessory port built in, maybe this is why they are going that route, adaptable to Alpha and NEX accessories?

Finally two wheels for both and a proper mode dial for the 6! Plus AEL button on the 6… Though wish it had the switch around it like the 7. Other than that the 6 looks awesome.

One question though, we know it has a lower resolution EVF, but is it phase sequential?

  31. This camera may be beautiful inside, but the outside looks like an anorexic girls with oversize boobs and emo make up 🙂

    1. If you are talking about the NEX-5 I agree.
Although NEX-7 look more cool NEX-6 = SEX!
Just the perfect size and everything were it should be!
Pss, can you introduce me to that girl you described? 😉

  32. I’d take a used NEX-7 off Ebay for 1,000 or under before getting a new NEX-6 with no tri-nav controls, less resolution EVF, etc. Not sure why this is viewed as the “ideal” body. I guess for those that don’t want many controls/dials and a smaller body? If you’re given more options for image control, then that’s a camera system you invest in as you progress into photography. 6 months from the NEX-6 release, there will be a NEX-6(n), with higher resolution EVF, touch screen LCD, etc. Again, a used NEX-7 is still better than a new NEX-6, AND you would probably be able to save a few bucks going that route!

    1. Some prefer the slightly better high ISO capabilities of the 16MP sensor vs the 24MP in the NEX-7. Also, some might prefer the fact that the NEX-6 will have PDAF/CDAF hybrid, will have WiFi, touchscreen, extensible OS and a proper mode dial. Yes it doesn’t have Tri-Nav, but it does have dual dials, plus a mode dial. Is the NEX-7 still a nice camera? Yes. But I can see why there would be some out there that prefer what this NEX-6 will offer – so to them this would be the better camera.

      1. The less megapixels equals less noise is a myth not supported by evidence or theory.

If the smaller pixels had the same read noise the larger pixels have, then the 24mp sensor would have about 12% more read noise over the whole image. However, smaller pixels have slightly less read noise per pixel than bigger ones, thus the difference over the whole image is pretty insignificant.

(Before you quote the DPR images, they’re a joke – different exposures, different magifictions and different processing.)

        1. Actually I am perfectly happy with the 24MP sensor. I have no interest in comparing them, they are both fantastic sensors that produce great images – I was merely pointing out that ‘some’ might think this is the best NEX yet due to a perceived notion that the 16MP is better at higher ISOs.

I honestly couldn’t care less, but if I had to choose probably would like the 16MP in a mirrorless, just to have slightly smaller files. SLR/SLT I would probably go the other way. Just based on my shooting habits only of course.

  33. I see the left side of the Nex6 (increasing the luminance on the picture) and see just one door for conections, my guess? Mini HDMI and USB ports only, i have hope for a mic input 🙁

  34. One last thing, I wonder if they will have a wired remote trigger through that multipurpose hotshoe? That would make the 6 just about perfect.

    1. The Nex-6 looks like an unfinished mock-up, so I’m assuming the hot shoe wont be shiny. Doing a quick comparison with photos of the back of the Nex-7, the Nex-6 looks like it is about the same size, which I think is great. You wouldn’t want to go much smaller than the Nex-7 for this type of camera.
      Sam

    2. Well, it’s cheaper, has sensor that doesn’t give colorshift, has WiFi and app support — better than NEX-7 in almost every way 😉

  35. All you eagle eyed commentators, Does the PASM DIAL on NEX 6 look like something that can be pushed down, like a spring loaded button ? That will make it a little more compact.

  36. With just one dial on top, these will be the perfect Nex for legacy glasses, where 7’s Tri-Navi is just one dial too much(no aperture control with those lenses).

Still, I don’t think I’ll part my way with my 7.

  37. One thing I really like about the NEX-6 is that they have put the movie mode button closer to the side so it won’t be accidentally pressed. Great stuff. Now bring on the image leaks of the new NEX lenses!!!!

  38. Good, once I got the NEX-6 I can mod my NEX-5N to shoot IR.
16-50 pancake will be the body cap when travel around.
I wish the microlens can be further optimized for UW lenses like Biogon 21.
Hope it got touchscreen, face detection and tracking just like the 5N.

  39. I love that there will be on sensor phase detect on these! It has so many advantages, even if it isn’t ‘that mature’. Manual focusing with both phase detect and focus peaking is heaps better than peaking alone (which is handy but hardly accurate for critical focus) plus manual focus assist. It will also mean hybrid AF through the LA-EA1, without the bulk, cost and light loss of the LA-EA2. But even better I hope for an LA-EA3 which doesn’t have the mirror and PDAF of the 2, but does have the screw drive motor – that would be awesome!

    1. Matt, I’m actually not sure if phase detect actually has any effect on manual focus. I thought it’s mostly beneficial for autofocus.

      1. While obviously AF doesn’t do a lot in MF mode (ie doesn’t move the lens) it still functions and still is capable of indicating when something is in focus and therefore highlights the AF sensor that is detecting focus. Pretty certain my A65 does this, as does most of my previous DSLRs, so I don’t see this as being much different. It is especially useful in video recording where MF assist is not available.

  40. Nex-6 looks good. looks like a prototype… hope they make that hotshoe in a darker color. and probably a perfect design for the wheel that will complement the NEX body shape. that wheel still looks old school and dslr like. More power to the Admin.

  41. I wish the 5R had the pop=up flash. That would seal the deal for me. May go for it anyway. I’ll wait and see how the new autofocus turns out, and if it has touchscreen and new interface. Hope so.

      1. Tot I saw it wrongly… So 5R really don’t have build in flash… does it maintain 5N physical size?

Perhaps they still have alot of the external flash units, got to use it in one of the model.

Whether with build’in flash or without think its not that critical for NEX…

    1. Really? now it’s on a “blind” spot for both cameras. Your thumb doesn’t rest in those spots compared to what we had on previous models. Look more closely and think again.

  42. I can’t see the NEX-6 body selling for 950-1000 USD. It would cost more than an A65. No GPS (?), EVF of the A57 (?), and a lower resolution sensor than the NEX-7/A65/77. Perhaps, 800 USD body only? That would put the EOS-M kit smack in the middle of 5R and 6.

  43. The NEX-F3 is $550 USD. The 5R might be $700 and the 6 at $900.

The 5R seems too much like the 5N and still no flash, so unless the IQ is a lot different, then it’s not worth the upgrade. The 6 is too much for just a Nex. That EVF should have been a lower cost accessory for all.

I’ll skip this gen and stick with my 5N. Not worth losing half the value by selling if the 5R is so close. Thinking about getting the 35mm/1.8 for now. That’s why Sony needs to build better E-mount lenses. Not everyone needs a new body every year.

Why didn’t they just build a 16-105mm power zoom in a kit-size foot print instead of just 16-50 if it’s only f/3.5-5.6 aperture.

  44. What happened all of a sudden to that FF (full frame) sensor-equipped NEX that was just recently presented? Almost as soon as the rumor appears it seems to have been squashed. (©J©)

    1. I doubt it. More like it’ll be yet another model. If the NEX-7 gets any bigger, it’ll become a mirrorless A77.

    2. I am expecting the NEX-7 replacement to gain a weather-sealed body to better compete with camera like olympus EM5. And if this is the case, guess size increase is inevitable : )

  45. Fortunately, I doesn’t upgrade my nex5 to nex5N
Actually, from NEX5 to NEX5R, it doesn’t change setup of hardware. The function of all NEX5 is almost the same.
Now!! I can choose my new nex between nex6 and nex7.
    They all have hotshoe.

    1. Yea. It does. I mean: Either this or that’s the ugliest NEX released to date 😉
Only thing I’m missing is iISO hotshoe. Seems like there won’t be a way to use Sony flashes with it. Shame.

      1. Except for the rumours that Sony is moving to this shoe and their will be included compatible adapters.

Also I don’t think it is ugly, certainly not pretty though. Looks kind of elegant and purposeful. Also build wise seems more Alpha than NEX – That plastic looks like it is straight off a 5-series.

        1. But a hotshoe with no control pins moves us back 30 years in terms of flash functionality. As it looks, there is no way for the camera to control the flash, except triggering it.

I soooo hope these are mockups…

          1. There are a bunch of control pins in the front of the shoe. My guess looking at these first pictures is that this is essentially being used as a ‘cold-shoe’ to mount different things using the ISO standard for camera shoes, such as field monitors, microphones, lights etc. Then it has a set of pins that can be adapted for different uses, such as the Minolta shoe accessories as well as NEX accessory port accessories, depending on your needs, with supplied or available OEM adapters. It should be able to take EVFs, Mics, Flash guns, Monitors, continuous lights, wireless triggers etc just fine.

Did you notice that the NEX-6 doesn’t have a NEX accessory port? That is because it adapts through the new shoe.

I don’t know why everyone is getting so up in arms about the new shoe, so far as I can tell it is 3 times as useful as any other shoe option they could have gone with.

          2. Nope, didn’t see the connectors, thanks for pointing them out.
Hopefully then, a hot shoe adapter can be mounted for current flash lineup.
If the acessory shoe is gone, then atleast they seem to have finally decided on the connector and the data formats. – Good!

I was kinda expecting the new flash mount to have a hole in either or both sides, so that the flashes could be securely locked in place, thereby keeping one of the strong points with the Minolta hotshoe. Oh well …

          3. if those hidden pins at the front of the ISO hotshoe are pin-compatible with alpha/minolta flashes, then Sony may be able to very easily keep everyone happy. They could supply a very slim adapter (not the huge minolta-to-ISO things you see around) that slips in to the ISO shoe and provide an alpha shoe. Could be just a few mm deep as its not a ‘smart’ adapter, just a physical adapter to the hidden minolta pins.

            It’s a thought! 🙂

    1. Apple? I have not seen any Apple camera.
But Apple design is “flat and less of everything”.

      These cameras looks like prototypes.

      1. I have an Apple camera. People are so quick to forget…

Though this looks nothing like it, nor any other Apple product I can think of… Closest ‘might’ be the 20th Anniversary Mac, but you’d have to do A LOT of squinting to see it!

  46. Only if the 5R has better S/N ratio would it make much sense over the 5N. Ok, the current 5N focus tracking sucks, maybe the PDAF part of the 5R can help there.

Personally don’t care about the geeky conectedness of the 5R. Like my life is so fascinating, I must upload it this instant from a Starbucks wifi instead of when I get home to satisfy legions of Zony-loving dweeb fans.

    1. There are a lot more potential ‘serious’ uses for the ‘geeky’ features in these two. It is a bit like before the iPhone existed, most people would have found it difficult to see what the iPhone might be able to do for them, most mockups/leaks for example were purely an old clickwheel iPod with a phone built in.

An extensible OS is a flat out great idea for a camera, an off the shelf smart phone OS in a camera is a beyond terrible idea.

      Hopefully it is the former.

  47. Why call it SR5 when it’s already tangible 😛

Now I’m gonna have second thoughts about my brand new NEX-5N that I received from RMA.

  48. Nothing much to look at but neither is any other NEX. Looks like they have finally listened to there customers and added a command dial and proper hot shoe. This along with the 16mp sensor makes it more desirable than the nex7 to me.

    1. There appears to be no popup flash!

Something I like…because the body of the 5 (N or R) is just perfect in size! Adding a popupflash only makes it bigger (look at the nex F3…)

      It about personal taste 🙂

I love they added a second wheel on the 5R! (which I would assume can also be perfectly used as a mode dial 🙂 )

    2. I am probably alone in this but I feel they picked the wrong features to bring over to the NEX-6. Just give me the tri-nav on NEX-5R and I would be happy. I crappy low rez view finder and a dedicated mode dial has zero appeal.

  49. Can’t get why mode dial is needed. Does someone spend all the time changing shooting modes? Needless gimmick IMO, they better insert additional control wheel.

    1. A needless gimmick… That is on every Pro SLR and DSLR (and consumer) that you could name in the last 20 years. I love peoples interpretation of a gimmick.

The MORE direct control over shooting parameters, the better.

      1. But he is right. Who switches mode often? Usually you stay in ONE mode, direct to access to OTHER paramters are much more important.

  50. At last !
I understand Sony uses can be a little put off, but for me as a GX-1 user, the NEX6 looks * exactly* like the camera I’ve been dreaming of. Now please, pretty please, give us touch focus via screen, and reliable continuous AF, and I’m buying one. No wait… I’m buying two. Lol.

    1. Same here ! At last !

This NEX6 might be what I wanted my NEX5 to be in the first place, that is, NEX5 +
      – good controls with additional dials + touch screen (I don’t doubt touch to focus is in)
      – fast AF (again, I don’t doubt this will be put to good use for continuous AF)
      – build in flash and EVF are also to put on the plus side

I did not bought NEX7 because of its lack of touch screen and phase detection AF. Also, 24MP are useless for me.

      This NEX6 really is a dream 🙂

      1. I would take the tri-nav over a lower rez view finder any day of the week. I know many are excited for the NEX-6, I feel like they brought the wrong features over. I want good controls on my camera so I can quickly adapt settings to get better shots.

  51. I reckon that the rumor of a full frame sensor-equipped NEX is now dead since the official announcement is right around the corner for the new APS-C sensor-equipped new NEX-5 and 6.

    1. These were rumoured long before the FF NEX – One has nothing to do with the other (other than the obvious of being part of a family of products). The rumour for FF NEX was never for a 2012 release.

  52. Please tell me that dial on the NEX-6 isn’t final…it’s horrendous. I’d love a dial…but the one shown doesn’t fit the overall design IMO.

Still, the NEX-5R and NEX-6 look great 😀 Now…more lenses please to capitalise on the new PD-on-sensor AF 🙂

  53. The mode dial on the NEX-6 is much less useful than the soft dial on the NEX-5R – too bad considering I want exactly what a NEX-6 has to offer except that ugly dial. Guess I have to go with NEX-7 than … (As soon as it has application support ;))

  54. I’m amazed how many people think any nex’s are good looking? Great cameras and i’m looking forward to the nex6 but they all look ugly to me to different degrees the nex-7 being the best looking but none are going to win a beauty contest. The 6 just looks a little uglier than the 3 and 5.

  55. Sony finally builds the perfect Nex with the 6, better focusing, better low-light than the 7, flash and hotshoe, looks like my 5n will be headed to a new owner soon. Please let the hotshoe be a standard and not the Sony/Minolta.

Adding the mode dial, a control wheel, the extra button on top, AEL lock on back in addition to standard Nex two buttons and a multi function wheel next to the LCD – at least Sony was listening to some of the complaints – nice.

Now more lenses and firmware updates to existing cameras please.

  56. The REAL FANTASTIC REVOLUTION is that EVERY NEX-MODEL HAS GOT IT`S OWN USER-INTERFACE: 3 without wheel, 5 with wheel and function buton, 6 with printed wheel and 7 with two wheels. That makes it much more easier to change – to Canon or Olympus f.e..

    1. So what’s the problem? How is this any different to any other manufacturer?

      For the record though:

      NEX-3 – 1 Wheel
      NEX-5R – 2 Wheels
      NEX-6 – 2 Wheels + Mode Dial
      NEX-7 – 3 Wheels

    2. Another vote for GPS here, and please fit a standard (not Sony/Minolta) hot shoe, but, otherwise the NEX 6 potentially ticks the boxes for me. Only hope the addition of rumoured phase detect focus does not impair sensor performance.

  57. Andrea, do you know whether the evf is going to be 800×600 like the one used in a57 or is it going to have higher resolution? And are you sure that it’ll have lower resolution evf than nex-7?

  58. andrea, So Thats a new hot shoe, so is Sony Cameras are getting new hot shoes? The mInolta hot shoe is better, Yes the Universal hot shoe is more popular and you can buy any kind of cheap leds or lights for $10, but the Minolta is just much better. So sad that sony is going this road. and They could figure out a better solution to support both universal and Minolta.
