(FT2) Panasonic LX8 coming on July 16? With built-in EVF and larger sensor.

[shoplink 34270 ebay]

[/shoplink]
The current LX7 with [shoplink 34270 ebay]Gariz case[/shoplink].

An anonymous source at MirrorlessRumors reported that:

Panasonic lx8 comming soon.On July 16!Build in EVF and bigger Sensor.looks similar to the lx7

I cannot confirm via trusted sources if the rumor I got is correct. Hope to have an answer soon. For now this is ranked FT2 only! But this would become a serious competitor of the newly announced Sony RX100M3 (specs here). This is the first compact camera with pop-up EVF. I also don’t know yet how large the new sensor could be. Doubt it will be as big as the 1 inch sensor in the Sony!

By the way, the current LX7 sells with $95 off at [shoplink 46356 ebay]BigValue (Click here)[/shoplink]. Total price  is $305 only.

  1. Doubt to have 1″ sensor on LX8 then good bye LX8 .
I don’t see how it can compete against RX100 M3 if no 1″ sensor on the support . As aware , the only down point in RX100 is the lens not fast enough now Sony have rectify it with F1.8 to F2.8 .
Even with F1.0 aperature , LX8 still fall behind if no breakthough in sensor size .

    1. Yun, these aren’t portrait cameras. DOF isn’t going to be an issue, so it really doesn’t matter that much what size the sensor is. I’ve got perfectly useable A2 prints of landscapes from an 8MP Panasonic bridge camera with a tiny sensor. You just have to be a little bit more careful with technique, that’s all.

      1. Fast aperture not only for swallow DOF . It more on decent pic quality in small sensor’s term . This is what LX7 did with it’s F1.4 .

    2. Panasonic LX8 coming on July 16? With built-in EVF and larger sensor.
What part of the title to this rumor suggests that Panny will not enlarge the sensor?

People who buy sensor size will reject this camera as well as the RX100, (in favor of the GM1 or a really large sensor). People who buy such cameras are not buying sensor size. The LX7 and RX100 will produce pictures far beyond the expectation of sensor fanatics. But then so do smartphone and iPad cameras.

      1. There are some people who want fix lens highend compact and that’s why RX100 is doing very well .
The GM1 factor did have an impact on the market as well but is minor .
Even the GM1 have bigger sensor than the RX , it still need decent lenses to have clear advantage otherwise the RX will beat it with it’s Exmor@Zeiss combination .
        No doubt about it .

        1. As the Panasonic GM1 is an interchangeable lens camera, there is no need to wonder about it’s lenses being adequate to the task. The GM1 is in a completely different class than these 1″ sensor “pocket” cameras.

The GM1 and RX100 are both awesome little cameras which are easy to carry, fun to use and deliver high quality photos.

  2. Oh, it’s a great time to be a camera consumer! While I like my E-M1, it’s big, and clumsy with the 12-50 poking out the front. And I really don’t like doing without a built in evf, so I’m really happy with the latest trend, RF style compacts with built in EVF. I can see the day when I travel with one of these for landscapes, and the E-M1 wearing the Olympus 40-150/2.8 in a shoulder bag for portraits and wildlife.

  3. A 1/1.7″ sensor could still be doable as long as they keep the magic happening with the lens. A constant f1.4, or even an f1.4-f2 would be fairly comparable to the RX100.

Unfortunately the LX7 is just a little bit too big, anyway. Unless it’s smaller, you might as well go with the RX100 on the one hand or the GM1 on the other.

    1. I agree : bigness is a true issue here…
What about the lens? Something like 21-80 for example will be an interesting attempt to bring something new. There’s no good ultra wide lens in compact cameras so far, isn’it?

      1. Neither the RX100 nor the GM1 handle as well or are as ergonomically friendly as the LX7. It is much easier to take pictures one-handed with the LX7.

        1. But in order to sell, point-and-shoot cameras these days really need to be either pocketable, have an enormous zoom range, or a big sensor in order to stay relevant. There is no middle class anymore, at least not if they want to be profitable.

          1. No, but I can understand basic trends. Just look at the compact cameras on the market that are still selling and you can draw the same conclusions for yourself.

    2. > Unless it’s smaller

LX5 was smaller. And literally everybody complained that it was too small.

Or Pan can flip the sizes with every refresh: LX5 – small, LX7 – largish, LX8 – small again.

      1. Well…let’s see MrsAllCraps.
The Olympus EPL7 will smaller than this Panasonic LX8, (based on the fact that the EPL6 is smaller than the LX7). The EPL7 will have a MFT sensor and you can put ANY great lens on it you want. You can also ad the best MFT VF manufactured.. Who on earth would buy the Panacrapic?

        1. And when you have put in a decent lens on your EPL7, how big would it be? Ever thought of that, idiotic fanboy?

          1. 14mm f/2.5 or the 12-3mm2 zoom…smaller than LX7. I know it makes you so angry that you have to call people names, pantoid, pantard, panorama? 🙂

        2. Spoken like a true Juvenile, pathetic name calling and all. Good Job!

You forgot to mention Olympus is going to overcharge for the camera, as usual.

Besides, this is a camera with a fixed lens. People would be buying it for its compactness, not because it has interchangeable lenses. You like the EPL7 rumor? Then go comment how giddy you are for it in the previous post.

Don’t let this post stop you… go NOW!

          1. Please see Bob B.’s comment below. You can have compactness, interchangeable lenses and a MFT sensor. That is the whole point of MFT to begin with. Fool. 🙂

  4. Pasonic, just knock off the X100s, just:

    -Use a Four Thirds sensor.
-Make it a 1.4 or 1.8 40mm equivalent fixed lens. Basically a faster 20mm pancake.
-It’s got to be the right price.

Panasonic needs to make a fixed lens 20mm camera, the Primary and most popular lens of the M43 system. Built in evf or clip on. I don’t know what’s stopping them.

    1. Like GM1 body with fixed 20mm/1.7 (but with new focus motor). And about $350 – best digital camera 🙂

  5. Key issue here will be the quality of the sensor and not only its size.
What Sony did with its RX100 series was not only able to produce the relatively large sensor but its is regarded as excellent. The RX100 II (III) improved it even further.

Second, the lens. Early testers of the RX100 (III) noted huge improvements on the lens.

I do believe if Panasonic developed an excellent sensor (even a 1/1.7 size), develop & improved the lens further then, sure LX8 can sell.

But, considering the competition, it has to be near perfect camera.

    1. What do you know about RX100 and RX100 III? Personal experience? Or you are just repeating some junk someone else wrote in the net?

      1. I own the M2.
Used to shoot with the LX5 before that.

My main points here was you have to have a fantastic sensor and a terrific lens to have any shots of selling expensive pocket camera in today’s difficult market

        1. Wonderful, that entitles you to babble about just anything. So you are repeating someone else’s junk, thanks, that’s what I wanted to know.

          1. No. What I am saying is that if you are producing a small – relatively expense pocket camera in 2014 / 2015 it better be near perfect.

When the LX5 came out (mid 2010), a positive buzz was felt and the subsequent reviews were very good. For its time – a larger than average sensor – 1/1.63″, excellent lens, fast and sharp. It main and probably only rival at that time was the Canon s90/95.

What Sony and others have done since then is significant.
If LX8 is launched with a 1/1.7 sensor, it better be very good.
It has to beat the RX100 M1 or M2 in IQ, otherwise it will be a uphill battle.

            Can they do it, maybe.

          2. Not sure about “significant”, the electronic consumer (sorry but it’s true) manufacturers keep ignoring the control issue. Photographers need dials, they need a camera that does not stand in the way, above nerdy specs. At least, I know I do. If Panasonic brings this home and adds proper controls, this could turn into a killer cam, never mind the specs. If they don’t, it will be yet another toy.

    1. Only if the lens would totally collapse into the body would such a camera make sense.
Personally I would prefer a fast focusing 20mm f1.8 pancake that I could enjoy for many body generations to come.

  6. I have the LX7, and while it is only 10.2 MP and a small sensor, it is a great little carry camera, sunset camera, video camera, lowlight camera (Leica 1.4 lens), etc.. I carry the LX7 anytime I don’t feel like carrying bigger, more intrusive cameras. great restaurant camera, and all around snapper. Nice little zoom with built-in ND filter. Did I mention awesome for sunsets (my son calls it his sunset camera,

Just a little balance in case most commenters have never used the LX7.

  7. I hope they carry over some of the enhancements from the GH4. Use a 12mp 1″ sensor and Panasonic should be able to do 4k video with full sensor readout. Hopefully they’ll implement DFD too for fast continuous AF.

I don’t mind if they go a little larger than the RX100 if it can provide better handling and a better lens. And don’t cheap out on the EVF like the LF1. Panasonic can provide a viable alternative to the RX100 if they do it right.

  8. A pop-up EVF would be just the ticket for PEN cameras. I have both an EPM2 and EM-5, and though I love the small size of the PEN (with body cap lens on I can put it in my shirt pocket), it’s the EM-5 I chose mostly because of the built-in EVF. I’m at bifocal age, so the ability to put my eye up to a viewfinder instead of trying to focus on the LCD panel is a big advantage. I gave my old EPM-1 to my son and the first thing he did was buy the VF-3, and was much happier with the camera afterwards.

  9. With its pop-up EVF, this is the reincarnation of the Leica/Minolta CL, a wonderful little camera. It would make a great walk-around “Cartier Bresson” camera. If a larger sensor means added bulk and slower lens, it’s not worth it.

  10. My Canon S90 is up for replacement but I find most enthusiasts compacts too big. When I don’t want to carry my m43 gear I like my camera to fit my inner coat pocket. Cameras like the Pentax MX-1, Olympus XZ-2 and Panasonic LX7 are great but for me to big. Panasonic and Olympus should focus on really small compacts for enthusiasts. Where pro’s buy mirrorless to supplement their big DSLR’s amateurs like me buy small enthusiasts compacts to supplement their mirrorless system 🙂

    1. hm… I could be wrong, but my impression is that super compact are for consumers. Prosumers go for 1 inch and above, or small sensor with manual controls in a bigger package. Professional almost always go for full frame or APS-C.

If technology can squeeze m43 or APS-C to super compact, that would be great. But I don’t see this happening anytime soon due to the physics that requires of lens sizes.

  11. I think a very good move would be to develop a line of heavily weather sealed, fixed lens m43 cameras, with 24mm f2, 40mm f1.4 and 100mm f2.8 macro. They all should have very effective stabilization, fast focusing, mag alloy build, decent grip (yer compact think of GX7 style), corner EVF and if possible swivel touchscreen.

If each would be priced at around 500-700 € they could be a very interesting choice for a lot of photographers.

PS: Why are there no weather sealed premium compact cameras?

    1. I agree with most of what you say, except I would rather such a series was made with an ABS plastic body. More shock resistant, and cheaper to build. Spend the money on the lens and sensor.

    1. After Sony made a hugel leap forward for big sensor zoom compacts, I guess most companies revised their upcoming models, or even sent them back to the drawing board completely

  12. I hope:

    -lens like PL15
-sensor like m4/3 (why not? there are FF and asp-c compact..)
-not LF1 cheap EVF but high resolution at least like LVF2

    1. You seem to forget that these FF and ASP-C are either fixed lens compacts (Sony RX-1, Fuji x200) or humonguous bridge cameras (Sony RX-10)

    1. I am all for trying new form factors, but this looks rididculous. And a battery grip on a compact negates the size advantage.

  13. Hope it will have:
    – 4k video w/ full sensor read
    – 1080/120p slomo with much higher bitrate than the LX7 + same op as in normal speed
    – min 3x zoom from min 24mm
    – the manual control options of LX7: sharpness/contrast/saturation/NR
    – good wifi
    – tilt display
    – same ( or less ) weight as LX7

  14. It’s clear that Sony’s RX100 has really got other companies moving. I for one welcome Panasonic’s version (along with Fuji’s X30)

    1. Nope, it is a gadget forum, not a photography forum. People buy M43 here, that should tell you…

      1. You are well represented here. You must be a gadgeteer like the rest of us. Although I can understand your frustration with the lack of enthusiasm at the Nikon and Canon gadget sites.

      2. You are right, nobody cares for such a basic thing as manual controls. 4K video instead is hypertouted. This must be the biggest scam in photography. Absurd!

    2. The LX series have always had manual controls. No need caring extra for something that’s already there. Sure, if you want manual this, mechanical that and a dedicated button for everything, you’ll end up with a Nikon Df.

        1. Wow, we have great Engineers here who think they can throw everything into this camera, AND the kitchen sink!

Another failure, and the camera isn’t even out yet, and we still don’t know the specs? We got Mind Readers who can look into the Future TOO!

          1. You are looking at the Panasonic LX7. It has an aperture adjustment ring surrounding the lens and another typical dial on the right rear corner. I take it that you have never used the LX7?

I have said this before but will repeat it here, If I ever have to pare down to just one camera, it will be the LX7.

          2. So, two dials. I need:

            focus
            aperture
            speed
            exposure comp
            iso
            PASM

out of the menu. I am OK with ISO and PASM being activated after pressing a key.
This one seems to fall short.

          3. LOL sorry. This camera is really crap tho, no way it qualifies for me without manual controls.

          4. Mmmmh smack. I played with an old Nikon FE the other day, awesome! Great viewfinder, no rubbish, just the important stuff. And small!

          5. I would challenge you to build your own. If all the camera companies of the world are letting you down, show ’em how it’s done, son.

You accuse others of falling short; maybe you are part of an insignificant minority of constant complainers who do not inspire manufacturers to build you anything else to complain about.

          6. Sorry, that was too much photography for gadget geeks. Fortunately, Canon does it, and it is that good, I have it already!
This is just one more sore fail for toymaker Crapasonic after all.

          7. Oh, give me a break. Canon, you say? Tell us.

The first time in your life you hear about the LX series you start complaining that it hasn’t the manual controls of a pro DSLR, blaming the camera for being something it was never intended to be (and probably never could). And when people correct you you reply with lame insults. Jeez.

          8. “It never could” Why is Panasonic the one who never could? because they haven’t understood what photographers want yet, or perhaps they never cared. They could make a killer cam here, but I fear they will come out with the usual menu-based toy. With 125 “creative” shooting modes and one dial because everyone else has it. The discussion here will all be about the pixels, so never mind.

          9. Oh yeah, tell me who could. Please. Go ahead. There are several phography websites with comprehensive lists of cameras from all major manufacturers (as well as some minor), complete with pictures and specifications. If such a camera exists, I’m sure you can find it there. I’m waiting.

          10. Exactly. Let’s see the smarming on this site when the new plastic toy comes out. Many will whinge because some useless number is not up to par, and no actual photogs will bother buying it.

          11. Your remark is like the sort of sour grapes plus holier than thou ones we read on DP Review. What is it about photography that brings out such negative judgmental-ism? Why such intolerance to the notion that there are different market segments with different needs or budgets as in every other industry?
An Honda Civic is an awesome car for its market segment, delivering the needed and necessary characteristics to satisfy at that price point. Ditto for top-of-the-line Mercedes. When you drive around a corner hard in an S-Class Mercedes the sides of the seat inflate, to cradle and hold you in. No potential purchaser of a Civic is going to say it’s a piece of junk because it doesn’t have that feature.
A company’s line-up of cameras is just that, a line-up. Different strokes for different folks.

          12. This is what happens to Panasonic: they give me nothing. Better companies give me plenty. For example Canon, Nikon… They are simply one level higher, no surprise there.

  15. Hi Admin, a couple of months ago you mentioned that Olympus was developing a compact with a fixed 50mm equivalent lens opening at F0,95. Is there any news about it?

  16. Nah, either a FF sensor with 10 – 1000 f 0.5 and 40mp 2400fps EVF/OVF hybrid as well as 16K movie or no buy 🙂 (come to think of this, when water lens is out, this is possible)
