Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens now coming with A-mount.

Tokina Japan just announced that they will launch the new Tokina 11-16mm DX II A-mount lens on November 21. This is an APS-C lens and sells for $549 in Canon/Nikon mount (here at BHphoto).

    1. Oh yea, this would be great. Though I guess Tokina doesn’t see enough market potential for that – even more so as Sony already got outstanding Zeiss 16-35 (though yea – very different price point).

  1. Finally, Tokina is “out of the Nikon grip” LOL!!

I can imagine this lens will make a very good companion with the Zeiss 16-70/4 lens 🙂

If I go Nex 7, this is definitely on my list

  2. I had the first version of the 11-16mm and loved it… ended up selling it cause it + the LAEA2 on my NEX-6 was a little much…

      1. Yea, that’s it. Kinda disappointing, but I guess we should get used to that, as it’s pretty much exactly what Sony does recently.

      1. @Hans: you didn’t hold it.

it has a very good grip !
plus, the finish is very nice

        and more important:
it is the best UWA zoom you can get on APSC.
really really nice too shoot inside churches

wish sony would have made it, so we could get
        jpeg lens correction
sometimes i am too lazy for post-prod 😉

    1. Not enough market for that. Even Sigma struggles on E-mount, and they always were more popular and recognizable than Tokina.

  3. For this particular lens, if it comes in native e-mount with auto-focus, I will definitely buy one regardless of its size.

    1. When will people understand that lenses designed for PDAF don’t work well with CDAF? this lens would need a whole new design.

      1. Never. But don’t worry – eventually you’ll learn to ignore them just like all idiots posting “make an E-mount version” under f**** every release of A-mount lens.

    1. Hi, I’ve not been able to test mine on a full-frame body but Philip Bloom says that if you zoom out to 16mm, it covers full frame. Remember that with the APS-C crop, 11mm translates to about 16.5mm, so basically, if you put it on a full-frame body, you’re getting a lens that’s actually a tiny bit wider that when it’s on APS-C! (You just can’t zoom with it)

    2. In other words, from 11-13 its like a fish-eye and from 14-16 a “Full-Frame” UWA f/2.8 lens…
      Maybe worth a try!
Compared to Nikon 14-24 f/2.8, you would have also AF with Sony LEA3 or 4 adapter.

      Nobody

  4. I almost was going to ask a dumb question until I realised. My dumb question was why does the aperture only go from 11 to 16.

    1. As this is a wide angle, I don’t think the new focusing motor is much of an advantage (infinity focus is about 0.9m and if you step down to hyperfocal, the minimum focusing distance is about 3cm from the glass!)… so you won’t hear the focusing motor much in any case.

      So its just the coatings.

I’d be tempted to pick up the Mk 1 second hand.
