Our super nice readers OG, Ben and Richard sent me some very useful size comparison images. On top you see the comparison with other FF cameras like the Leica M9 ($6500 camera!) and the Canon 5DmarkII ($3400). The RX1 is incredibly small and has the same size of the already tiny Panasonic GX1 (here on Amazon) that uses a much smaller Micro Four Thirds sensor (Click on the image below):
And if you compare it with a Nikon D700 with 35mm f/2.0 lens than you get this (again click on pic!):
From an engineering point of view this is an amazing piece of technology. I hope Sony is reading the SonyAlphaRumors readers comments and make an interchangeable lens version of the RX1. Our readers already have their hands on the credit card for this 🙂

would have loved the lens to be F1.4, add IBIS and I’ll by even if it’s a fixed lens…
The FF sensor without mirror will have excellent high-ISO performance, so just increase ISO. No need for an ultra-fest lens or IBIS.
1.4 for the DOF since it’s the only lens you can have on this camera and IBIS to be used in video , love how Olympus soothes the motion, don’t like the smudged details, can not get even close to what my 5D mark II achieved 🙁
this thing should have come with a built in optical viewfinder, with a screw on or clamp on rubber eyecup, that can be swapped out for an aftermarket eyepiece magnifier. so easy to make this with an ovf since it is a fixed length fixed lens. dont see any need for both a waekly builtin flash and also a hotshoe flash. hotshoe flash with diffuser is many times better. i use a giant harbordigitaldesign ultimate lightbox diffuser with the f58am flash with very nice light distro to the skin. or straight on for fillflash. would never use the weakly popup flash. but if sony swapped out the popup flash for an ovf, this camera will be a instant streetshooter cult classic. evf just doesnt work stopped down in the dark, but ovf will work even at f22. maybe on the next revision sony will make the rx2 with a builtin ovf?
forgot this is auto lens.
you want to mount that big thing on a small camera like this?
On FF at f2 DoF will not be a problem.
And make the lens larger? They have done some research on this for sure why they don’t go deeper.
An f1.4 lens could be much more larger than an f2.0 one (same focal length).
You should compare these two bellow (however, these aren’t the only things what matter size wise):
http://www.photozone.de/nikon_ff/596-nikkorafs3514ff
http://www.photozone.de/nikon_ff/444-nikkor_afd_35_20_ff
I think Sony really know what they’re aiming at here. It’s not for me personally, but I’m sure they’ve done their research.
Not for me either. If I was going to spend that much I’d get a D600 + Nikkor 24-70, which is a fantastic lens.
Comparing the size of a dslr with a compact is silly. Look at the Oly E-5 vs Pan GF5. Did Pan do an “amazing” job ? DSLR are always bigger because of mirrors and prisms etc.
However, how about an aps-c version of the RX100 with a 24-90 lens for US$800 ? That’d be very tempting….
Just leave it at 24mm at 1.8 and i would be fine! lol. I’ve taken maybe 4 shots with my rx100 that wasnt at 28mm
That alone is part of its massive value compared to its price.
The size of a GX/GF1…full frame with f2 lens and video and magnesium body and great AF (I imagine it would be the new gen that has the motor in the lens and the PDAF system in the sensor) so….what gives man? f”£$ng great value for money.
Size – yes. Functionality – hmm…. I don’t think so!
It’s stupid to compare sizes in this case.
I can accept RX1 ONLY as a first step towards the future. It’s still quite limited now – one singe (not interchangeable) lens, almost no custom controls on the body, no grip, etc.
I want to see the professional who will go to shoot a wedding with RX1 instead with his DSLR and bunch of lenses.
Correct me if I’m wrong!
Why would you assume a wedding photographer would lug a round a glorified digital FF P&S?
that’s what I said – it’s stupid to compare RX1 with Canon MII (as it was done above)
For just 2800 USD you get marvellous lens with FF sensor attached to it, isn’t it good? 🙂
not enough for $2800
ah, and it doesn’t even have a viewfinder
+1
What people keep forgetting is that you cannot create this size of camera/lens with an ILC. A fixed lens camera allow you to design the micro lenses on the sensor to match a specific lens design, thus allowing a much more compact solution. A FF ILC would end up with either much larger lenses or compromised IQ.
Thank you. This is not necessarily something that people forget, but what people do not want to understand.
They forget that the X100, a compact APS-C sized cam, has no discernible disadvantage on the corners thanks to its dedicated sensor. People forget that the X Pro 1 has a 35mm (50) that in a dedicated cam like an X100, could have been as compact as its 23mm if not built as an ILC.
People take Canon’s example of 22mm and say that it is possible to make such a lens for APS-C, small. Of course it is, but the compromise comes in image quality regardless of whatever you want to put as a positive.
I dont mind the size of the 24mm sonnar E, because its quality weights more than its size disadvantage. That being said, there are people that still ask for a coin thick lens as a 21mm lens f1.4 and pay $3 for it and say that it could still be the most amazing lens EVER… square up, people, it aint gonna happen.
and this is relevant how?
O.o
To your constant menstrual moaning here at SAR. I know many gay people that I respect deeply…but you are not one of them! The stuff you defecate on that keyboard, man.
The first compact full frame digital camera in history and all people do here is complain about it (the lens itself is about the size of your dicks to those who complained that NEX lenses were too large) But no, people complain that this ‘should have been interchangeable’ and also have the lenses of the same size with great performance and also want to pay $5 for it. $3 dollar bill ya’ll, cheapos.
This combo is a combo relevant to those who like to use the 35mm focal length the most. If you don’t like it, shut it, appreciate the advancement and go buy yourself a holga to realize your dreams you hippies!
thank you for your rambling. couldnt understand any of your troll. 🙂
And what you forget is that the sensor is not custom made for this camera,
it’s the same sensor as the A99.
It’s already expensive enough to manufacture a FF sensor, they won’t make a different one for each camera !
This camera wouldn’t be possible if the sensor wasn’t tweaked. That’s why it’s going for $2800.
Different microlens can be used… in theory. I don’t know if microlens is built right to the sensor from the beginning of the sensor production line.
I keep waiting for someone to finally admit that this is a silly joke. Because, it really is. No (built-in) optical or electronic viewfinder? Seriously? It’s just another point and shoot. I don’t give a damn that it has a huuuuge sensor. Who gives a damn when it’s just the same form factor as any of the other me-too mirror-less cameras.
Sony found a way to get the EVF into the NEX. If this thing is supposed to be all dat, and a bag of chips (which it should for $3K) then it needs a real viewfinder. Not some kind of “Whitepowermagic” BS for the back display.
This thing is DOA.
This camera hit all the right boxes in the target group. You are fiddling with details and missing the big picture.
PS: EVF and OVF accessories will be available should you need one.
It doesn’t seem to have an accessory port to add such things in the future. Unlesn they are wireless which would be a real batter hog.
The new “Sony Standard Hot Shoe” includes a connection for accessories like evf, flash and video LED lamp!
That would be pretty cool.
I’m not sure this post deserves a reasonable response. There has been a massive outpouring of opinions on this camera, and a staggering number of them are from people who seem to think that every new product is required to convince them to buy it. The popular world-view as of 2012 is one of such self-centered myopia that many can’t imagine anything being made for a demographic they’re not a part of. If Doug finds more legitimacy in a camera that he can smoosh his face against than one that “simply” takes world-class photographs, so be it. There are plenty of cameras already made for him. The rest of us will be busy holding our cameras at arms-length (or-gasp-buy an aux viewfinder!) and enjoying the top-tier image quality while we’re at it.
Wait until you see what kind of image this thing can produce before calling it DOA. My guess is it will be exceptional.
VF is a composition tool, it is not essential. Plus you have the option to buy it as an accessory. If it is too expensive for you, then don’t buy it! It is not going to be a huge consumer hit like iphone, but it is not designed for that market. The important thing is that it opens the door for compact FF. Imagining 5 years from now, P&S cameras may all have FF sensors because Sony did it in 2012.
It hits the target people like me. Shoots with 35mm because its extremely versatile, its out often and wants something unobtrusive. You think anyone can take you seriously with this cam? I dont think so…but that you are producing images akin to 5D2/3, D800 and A99….yeah…its all about whats inside, baby.
“VF is a composition tool, it is not essential.” – ARE YOU SERIOUS????? composition is the most important about photography, then it’s correct exposure.
Yes, a VF is a TOOL just the same way that a hammer is…neither is the only option. While I too would certainly prefer a proper VF or a hammer, the same job can still be done using an LCD or the heel of a boot (respectively, of course). You act like they’re forcing us to shoot blind and hope you’ve even managed to frame your subject. Sony saw fit not to include one, and since they’ve had enough sense to produce this incredible camera in the first place, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and reserve judgement until it uh…actually exists.
so compose with the 3″ lcd on the back – its not like you would have no options…
Don’t worry, other people will..
Just because you don’t like it or buy it, doesn’t mean it’s DOA or it has to fail. Also, OVF/EVF, they will have it as optional accessories for sure.
Lol you couldn’t be more wrong.
This camera will be super hard to get and will a street togs dream!
“Sreet Tog”? Sorry. Not going to cut it. The world has enough Instagram looking crap, already. A full-frame sensor is a premium piece of silicone. Not offering a built-in viewfinder is absolutely going to kill this expensive P&S. Don’t blather about some aftermarket POS that you add to the hot shoe. That’s low-rent.
I have used an NEX-5N without any VF for the past year after having a Nikon DSLR since 2004. Easy transition and I have no desire to use a VF again. I don’t often shoot in bright sunlight either. But I do shoot the Zeiss 24 on my 5N 90+% of the time so the RX1 is something I am hoping lives up to the hype because I’d like one.
no blubbers here, the camera is an “almost” hit.
It will not sell in tons because it is not meant to.
I would buy one, for instance, if it had a zoom or a wider wide-angle.
This kind of camera does not substitute DSLR for all-around versatility, but it is an excellent 24h a day companion. The form factor is functional to this, and, in this, this camera is amazing.
Yes, VF would have been preferable. But at the expense of portability, maybe better an external one for specific uses (bright day, etc)
Viewfinder cannot be an issue:
http://www.google.se/search?tbm=isch&source=mog&hl=sv&gl=se&client=ms-android-samsung&tab=wi&q=leica%20viewfinder&sa=N&biw=320&bih=533#i=14
Since it is a fixed focal lens, it will be easy to get used to ‘guess’ what the lens sees. That can help in street photos.
Incredible engineering, but who’s working on the firmware update for the A77/A65. There are still problems with the flash exposure.
+1
+2
We want a77 Firmware Update.
Sony – make us believe!
What is wrong with the a77 firmware as it is now?
Read the first post. Flash exposure. It also needs a LOT of work in the jpeg quality. v4 did wonders for the A700.
I have a Canon ELPH APS film camera that is much smaller than any larger sensor digital camera I’ve ever seen – it was as small as the smallest P&S cameras today. The price of such compact cameras were in the optics and the physical shell — not much electronics then.
I’ve always believed that it was possible to build large sensor (APS-C or FF) compact cameras but all the naysayers said that it was impossible — especially the compact full frame camera. Everybody said that FF cameras had to be very large and the lenses had to be even larger.
But now SONY has proven them all wrong. Unfortunately, full frame sensor price (compared to a roll of film) has caused the pricing to be very out of whack at close to $3,000 and will probably relegate this to a very niche item unless SONY ups the ante again and releases a full frame NEX camera with very small FF lenses unlike the current APS-C E-mount lenses they have been coming out with. I could easily see a FF NEX camera selling well at $2,000 *if* there are small, high quality fast primes and zooms to go along with it.
APS-C for the most part was just a stop gap measure and while the latest APS-C sensors from SONY are great, nothing beats a 35mm FF sensor based compact ILS camera that can finally make use of all the vintage 35mm lenses out there.
To be honest,I think the next frontier after this for SONY will be releasing a high end mirrorless SLR for medium format. Such a camera would take adapters that allowed the use of medium format lenses from various brands. That would finally put some distance between consumer and professional SLRs. That medium format camera unlike today’s very expensive medium format cameras and backs would be priced around $6-$10K but have the advanced sensors and electronics that SONY is known for such that the cameras would be CMOS, have live-view, video!, 5fps, image stabilization etc..
Hopefully!!
Do keep in mind that film and sensor are very different things. Light rays can hit a film with large angles of incidence without issues; the same can’t be said about sensors. Typical sensors require light to hit it almost perpendicularly. See the resulting image when you mount a wide angle M-mount lens to NEX-7. Good thing microlenses and lens element with high refractive index are becoming more common. But before they were developed or can be fabricated economically, lenses for DSLRs just had to be larger.
The long flange distance (of DSLRs) didn’t help either – well, it didn’t help wide angle lenses. Most wide angle lenses have to be retrofocal, which made them more optically complicated and bigger. Unlike the standard 50mm (slight longer than the typical DSLR flange distance), which is very simple, small and cheap.
The addition of AF, IS, aperture motor, etc. obviously doesn’t help make the lens smaller either. In particularly, fast AF and IS require more complicated lens design, like internal focusing, multiple moving elements, etc.
Anyway, the RX1 is small because it’s a mirrorless with a fixed prime lens. The lens is specifically designed for it and the sensor has microlenses. The body has less physical controls, no weather sealing, no EVF, no IS, no grip and so on.
@ Photonut
Nice post mate 🙂
The sample photos will determine whether this sells well. I’m betting the photos will be impressive.
How can it not be
FF mirrorless with Zeiss glass
It seems irrelevant but if they are aiming at higher tier users(well, Leica RF) I would add the MP to my M9 set instead of this. NIce condition MP sells for around $3000 and will last much longer than this camera, in terms of value and quality.
A point-and-shoot, no viewfinder, for $2800? No thanks. I don’t care if it is FF, that’s just too expensive. Maybe for $1800, with an OVF.
First, don’t forget this is the new technology being introduced. Nothing when it’s new, it’s gonna come cheap. Secondly, the lens and this new full frame sensor alone probably already cost more than $1,500. The Carl Zeiss NEX 24mm f1.8 alone, for instance, already cost $1,100-1,200 dollars. And what is this? The portability + Full frame new type of sensor..,too. And you should know the good OVF/EVF is not cheap. To have everything in that price, it’s not going to happen soon. Perhaps, in the next 2-4 years, but nowhere near now. Don’t worry, Sony knows you are not their target customers, so even though you don’t buy it, they know somebody will. They surely have done some research on this. They probably are just doing this for testing the market out like what Fuji did with their X100 as well before the next project like Full Frame NEX or whatever that may be.
i have no doubt whatsoever sony will sell an external evf for this camera. it’s a no-brainer for sony. anyone who shells out 2800 for this camera will gladly shell out $300 for an evf.
people keep talking about this addition. Is there an external port I am missing in the pictures? I don’t see one (well in the 3d cg renders since they aren’t photo’s)
Yes, the external port is in the hotshoe. It’s at the front under the metal edge, so you can only really see it in angled shots from the back.
It’s an amazing feat of engineering prowess demonstrated by Sony. Doesn’t mean it will sell, but amazing and credit is due. Can’t wait for Wed.
FF APS sensor in the consumer sphere remains an open field to conquer. Regardless of price, Sony jumped in head-first with the small size.
This is a prelude of things to come in the FF world. There will be a full frame interchangeable lens mirrorless camera from Sony within the next 1-2 years, you can book it. The body with an interchangeable lens won’t be this small though, but still small enough to attract a lot of people.
The way Sony churn out camera bodies expect FF MILC NEX 2nd quarter 2013
Does this little buggar use Alpha menu or NEX menu system? Does it share batteries with a99/77 or a55/NEX?
The controls actually look to be more Alpha oriented. I hope the menu system is too. But I certainly don’t want to hurdle using two sets of batteries, or surfing two different menu systems. The cool thing about Nikon VJ is they share batteries with the big cameras. That’s huge.
Don’t forget that *you don’t need a bag full of FF lenses* to take great pictures here. In fact, you don’t need any lenses. Lots of people with the money but no time who will go for this.
There are also lots of people who not only want this, but need it. If it has video as ‘filmic’ as the FF Canons, then that number of people will at least double: a 35mm video cam that you can hide, wear, or mount on anything bigger than a rabbit!
I think we are getting to the point of diminishing returns. There is a problem with making things TOO small. After a certain point, ergonomics goes out the window and other problems start to arise (can you put a big enough battery in it?) You mentioned video. Aren’t there already reports of the NEX and overheating? How do you think this camera would fare (much bigger sensor and if anything a bit smaller)? Too small and it gets really hard to hold it and it would be a sad day to drop my $3000 camera because I couldn’t hold it. Any film maker needs to have more than one lens and you would be hard pressed to convince them that they didn’t (especially with the Canikon resistance army telling them otherwise).
This camera is an excellent proof of concept, and frankly, somebody has to fund the R&D so why not see if they can sell a few? By making the camera so small, it will be hard to hold, run hot (for video) and probably not have a giant battery in it. I’d love to see the 2.0-3.0 of this, but with more improvements in battery technology and a bit more flexibility.
What photographer would spend $2800. on a camera without interchangeable lenses?!! This camera is just as “silly” as the $6000. monochrome Leica M9! The NEX-7 lives on for at least another season -including all the great lenses that you can, yes, interchange!!
I’m certainly considering it. In fact, I’d maintain that most photographers, outside of working wedding photographers and whatnot, would benefit from only using a single lens.
I was once forced to travel with my Nex-5 and one lens, the 16mm pancake and I realized I only need one lens in most cases. I now carry my A77 and one lens, the 85mm f/1.4. I own no zoom lenses.
Couldn’t agree more about the fixed focal length.
I have a Nikon DSLR, but the only lens I ever use on it is my trusty 50 1.4.
As I’ve uselessly complained about at the top of this thread, the lack of interchangeable lenses isn’t the deficiency with this (supposed) camera. It’s the lack of a built-in EVF.
Yep, 35 mm is pretty much perfect. However, I’m concerned that I would have to throw away the lens too when I upgrade to a newer model in some years.
not to mention sony will probably have a “clear view” implementation on this camera.
I’m considering this camera, AND a M-Monochrome, so I must be silly..
I’m not considering the Monochrome, but sure I’m gonna get the RX1. So I’m in the group as well
I wait for the real gamer changer : FF nex with hybrid A/E mount and… wait for it… 4k video !
Hybrid A/E-mount? ^^ Never gonna happen. It’s called adapter.
Dual mount with movable sensor would work.
Never say say never.
No the mounts are different. Besides the NEX glass isn’t that great–passable now, but not great. Why have a mirrorless camera with all the girth? Kudos to Pentax for trying it but I don’t see the point.
If I understand correctly from the post, Sony tell me as an imaging devices manufacturer, they no long able to manufacture an interchangeable lenses FF camera like the size of RX1.
I still not believe the shit 😀 as usual Sony like to do testing on new device, new segment then come out another improve version later. Sony predicted its rival will surprise on RX1, and also predicted users will mad & rage why RX1 and not NEXFF. Sony seem start get naughty again not listen to major crowd 😀 E mount users now need to hammer this RX1 as many as possible. So that they will move to NexFF for you NEXt!
Reallly, what was sony thinking? Gluing the lens to it! I would have bought it imeaditely if It had a A mount.
As a wedding photographer I would love this. I’d still have my a900 with 24-70 and 70-200 combo but there are times you want to put that stuff down yet still have the ability to get the shot. If the viewfinder option works then I’ll be keen. I would probably have preferred built in viewfinder and standard hotshoe Instead of built in flash but unlike many I’ll judge the cake when it comes out of the oven, not before.
Once again SONY are the Masters of Miniaturization ……..
just because we can.
😉
Let me get this straight. Leica has the M9, a camera with no AF, no video mode, limited ISO sensitivity, etc… and is $7000 (body only) and everyone is choked up about Sony’s FF 24MP, AF, High ISO, super fast focus, burst, video mode camera. Because it costs $2799 and doesn’t have an EVF which you can buy separately.
Either way both are out of my price range, but professionals are going to eat this up.
For what it is I’m sure it will be great! It’s simply too much scratch for my taste. Far too limiting for a $3k (including VF) travel cam. I would just soon drag along the A99 or my a900 with a 16-35.
What will limit the market most for this is the perception that the lens cannot maintain value for its own right once the body becomes obsolete, which ought to happen in a few years.
-No built-in EVF
-Not ILC
-No customizable external controls a la nex7
$2800 point and shoot camera. Don’t give a damn if it’s full frame. Worthless.
It’s NOT for you! Someone else will buy it – so, please don’t worry much!! 🙂
Now question is NEX-7 with 24mm Zeiss or the RX1 … Everyone of these has significant advantages over the other.
NEX-7 + 24mm:
Cheaper, built-in EVF and more flexible with interchangeable lenses
RX1:
Presuambly much better IQ, maybe better handling and build-quality
Also, will the RX1 be sold under the Cybershot brand? Wouldn’t hurt that brand for sure.
ah don’t forget nex 7 have advantage with 10FPS than RX1 5FPS 😀
also nex 7 have tilt LCD while RX1 have fix LCD with “whitemagic” technology
are RX1 have AF Assist and image stabilition? i’m really curious 😀
for outdoor activity like street photograph rx 1 suppose have weather sealed and little grip, that would be very nice to protecting camera
Wouldn’t surprise me if RX1 did faster fps in crop mode.
Sony Please give EVF to this model!!! Unless tht for the FF nex I’ll wait. but Kudos to this engineering feat.
Ummmm, when was this made?
it seems to have the bayonet converter attachment.
People that love the RX1 please buy as many as you want. You want to have extras give to family and friends. You are funding SONY R&D which will bring the rest of us NEX-9 FF with IBIS, EVF, GPS, etc. I thank you for your contribution to photography.
Some of the arguments here …. are beyond further comment.
If this camera isn’t for you, why bother fighting it?
If the quality is up to par with its price, there will be a market for it.
There are more people out there who want to shoot others but dogs, cats, kids, and flowers in bright colors.
I bet that 50% of that clientele will turn it and set it up as a b/w picture tool and we will see some great outcome if this piece delivers according to expectations.
Who doesn’t want it, stop complaining – just don’t buy it! You don’t have the insight in Sony’s strategy, anyhow.
I think it’s a smart move!
It seems like one thing they have not told us is if it produces video from some of its pixels or down-sampled from ALL of its pixels. If it uses all f its pixels to produce video. This could be a pretty big deal.
maybe, it has square sensor, medium format 😀
Please buy this camera ! Buy this camera so that I can eventually afford to buy such a camera in the future when prices eventually touch back to Earth. The Fuji X100 begat the ILC X Pro 1, so shalt the Sony RX1 begat it’s mirrorless FF ILC progeny.
I think the RX1 signals Sony’s commitment to aps-c/Super35. The lenses for a FF NEX would be huge.
I would get it if I could afford it.I cant wait to have a full frame smart phone ..lol
I think Sony know they’re not going to sell like hot cake with the 2700 price tag and know that this camera is not for everyone and only a few people will be willing to pay that premium price. This is more like showing off their engineering prowess what they’re capable of which paves way to ff ILC in the near future, gain more respect from photographers, and media attention.
The product and price don’t have to make sense. At this stage, it’s the similar to back then when Samsung/Sony first released OLED TV screens. Small screen at ridiculously crazy price. Only meant for wealthy early adopters with bundles of cash.
SONY are back.
The RX1 is a statement of intent, it’s not about selling the RX1 it’s about the message it sends to the photographic community. It’s a big bold step forward stating how serious they are about this market segment and making clear they are the guys to back.
I worked for them for 15 years from mid 90s and in some ways they lost their mojo, not anymore.
I still stick with the opinion that this will be a the start of a new generation of sony semi interchangable lense system.
The 35mm seems to offer a bajonet mount as the NEX 16mm pancake does. This would allow to add converter lenses. It would fit into the renewal of the 16mm NEX (they would need a much faster “base” lense for other then WA stuff).
So Sony could add high grade converter optics, lets say a 6x tele f2.0 and you would get a 210mm f4.0 FF system with relatively low cost usable for NEX and RX. With RFID chips in the converter they could even let the camera “know” what is attached for the EXIF.
If they would do something like this they need superb “base” optics which the RX1 seems to provide.
Come on people, let’s congratulate Sony for bringing out something unique. It’s probably a one off like my wonderful DSC-R1, but who cares if it ticks all the image quality boxes like the aforementioned camera did. My DSC-R1 is still producing sensational images over six years later. During its time the reviewers recommended this camera for the IQ of its lens alone.
Pricey, sure, but how about a reality check. The Zeiss lens, if it is sensational, would have cost about $1,500+ on its own. Full Frame sensor camera, add about $1,000, and that’s on the very cheap side. I’m guessing that the price will probably eventually fall to about $2,399, or that this may become the street price for this camera.
Weather sealing would have been nice. More for dust and sand for someone like me, rather than moisture. Yes, I would have preferred no pop-up flash too, to retain the integrity and sealing of the body. I can add a viewfinder, so that’s no problem.
Will I buy one? I will wait for all manner of tests to be finalised and if the image quality is rated as ‘incredible’ I will start saving. Sony does make some sensational cameras at times, my DSC-R1 being a testament to this. If it lives up to my expectations, this camera will be a ‘pocket rocket’.
Look, each to their own. We all have different shooting needs and thus different preferences, but let’s give some credit where it is due, to the Sony and Zeiss engineers, for producing such an interesting product.
To those who will eventually buy it (this may include me); I wish you ‘happy shooting’. 🙂 🙂 🙂
Im sure this is going to be interesting but definitely not for me. Compact, small and lightweight doesnt always mean good for some people. Already the NEX is way too small for my big hands.
I will wait to see how many it will be sold in second-hand market.
I’m thinking this camera will produce the best ever image quality FF photos at 35mm focal length (even better than Leica M with 35mm Lens), considering its dedicated sensor + dedicated Zeiss lens. And with its extremely compact size, this could be a dream-comes-true for many serious photographers.
And with the recent products launched by Sony, I’m pretty confident that Sony will & is able to solve the shortage in A & E-mount lenses.
This is my dream come true. I dont want alot of lenses. I just want one so I dont have to think about which lens to choose. I´ve screamed for a digital FF-compact sinze I got my Nikon D3.. And now its finally here.. I love you Sony.
Just hope the PDAF on sensor is on par with the Nikon 1 system, then I´ll fucking shit my pants.
Great and bold move by Sony. It is fascinating to realise how long it has taken for the market to produce a FF compact. This in effect brings us back, more or less, to the form factor of high end 35mm “compacts” from the film age.
On the size comparisons here, it would be more fair to compare the RX1 to the M9 + 35mm ‘cron, rather than 50 ‘lux. That would equalise the “depth” of full package I think. And “depth” is the most important parameter in the “pocketable vs not pocketable” debate. We are talking coat pockets here, obviously. M9 is heavier of course.
On the VF debate: I would love an optional “active OVF”. It should be feasible. A compact OVF with a transparent LCD overlay with parallax correcyion markings and showing where the AF patch is at any given distance. Power could come through the hot shoe. Nobody has done that yet, but, with a fixed lens, this would kill the need for a bulky EVF. I just hate EVFs, especially on bright days…
Bet the RX1 has adapter lenses like the NEX 16mm. Look at the bayonet tucked inside the lens. Sure that could be for hood only… But I bet their is a 2x and a .5x front lens converter…
That would enable a 70mm f2.8 and a 17.5mm f2.8. Maybe it even accepts the NEX 16mm lens converters…?
Can’t wait to see images from this beastie.
But … why so small? What’s the point? No grip??? Compare this to the GX1 (thanks for the size comparison shots, by the way). The Pana looks so much more comfortable to hold. The Sony looks like you’ll be able to slip half a finger on each side. I don’t get that small-size craze.
A NEX-7 is an ideal size. Why make a camera ergonomically worse just to make it smaller ? Can’t wait to see images (and compare them to the Sigma DP Merrill) and can’t wait to hear Sony explain who they’re aiming this at …
No way. FF fixed lens, no EVF. Another bizarre Sony decision. Sure some guys might find this enough. But I very much doubt that the majority will embrace THAT as the future of photography. Looks like the just don’t get it. Ah yes .. A850 sold no Live view, NEX 7 sold, crop and toy controls.
This is a nice approach!
If Sony would have attached a 40mm/f2.0 lens, due to construction it would have been half the size of the 35mm lens and a nice compromise between 35mm and 50mm. 40mm is the ideal for FF.
No finder is a no go for such a system. The optional finder is a poor solution. So I have to wait until a mature solution will appear. And I am sure there will be one sooner than later.
how about reducing the size of their apsc nex lens first?
I will wait for Nex FF
No tilt screen and no VF ≡ no way for me. I would buy one if it had tilt screen.
Yeh, this camera is charming but, you know, externally it is somehow boring… What strikes me most is the lack of imagination in RX line. I saw all these shapes elsewhere and could not say I liked them — small size, sharp edges, slick finish. Yes, RX1 lacks VF but most notably it lacks that ‘alpha’ logo as a hint to its heritage. Obviously it’s made by another designer team which gives no shit about alpha compatibility and few generations of the NEX evolution! Look, NEX-6 is the most mature camera in that line (IMHO). It includes many suggestions discussed in multiple forums: it has EVF, grip, tiltable screen, direct controls, etc. It is built with adapters and lenses in mind. It’s a great photographic tool, not a status symbol. And it deserves an FF sensor more than other designs! Possibly the well known 36MP, after embargo expires..
RX1 is not a status symbol either. Leica is.
Either you like the design and concept or not, it does not change the fact compared to Nex6 that the sensor inside the camera is larger, hence the IQ (probably) better, while the camera + lens is smaller. This is the concept behind the camera, and it is an excellent one. OTOH, Nex line is not mature, yet. Maybe with the new lenses arriving in 6 months it will be, but at the moment it is de facto impossible to have a pocketable camera with high IQ in the Nex line, as lenses are way too big to fit into a pocket, or even a small purse.
24mm, 35mm, 50mm, and a zoom.
Four different cameras. Some people would buy two of them making Sony double their profits. Probably even more of an income than selling it with a new mount and a few switcheble lenses.
People would cry and whine; but in the end, don’t you think Sony would make more money that way?
Just a thought though…
No. My Nex-7 with the excelent Sigma 30mm is a pocketable camera.
“Our readers already have their hands on the credit card for this”
70% of SAR-readers voted they won’t buy this camera.
Although 4630*2800$ is alot of money.
I’m wodering how much what its wieght can be. If it’s lighter than a Nex-7 with a Zeiss 24mm lens, this might me the perfect camera for backpacking.
I want this. This is a perfect walkaround lens for me. If the price drops below $2000, I would spring. With Nikon releasing a $1500 FF camera, Sony is pricing itself out of the competition. Does the Zeiss glass attached worth $1300 more? What is this lacking: VF, sealed shock resistant body, a proper grip, super fast AF (I may be wrong here, this tiny thing could be as fast as a Canon 60D), burst rate. Even if the RX1 produces superlative IQ, that price is way too steep to ask from even the most excited enthusiasts with deep pockets.
Most of you guys are angry at Sony because you were expecting a 35mm FF NEX and in exchange Sony gives you a 35mm FF P&S. I think that the term “FF NEX” is a nonsense, even if it is technically feasible (which I’m not so sure).
– NEX is NOT about 35mm FF, NEX is about APS-C, period. If Sony makes a compact 35mm FF camera it won’t be a NEX, it will either be a reduced size Alpha, or a fixed lens like the RX1. The RX1 seems quite a logical choice.
– Very few people would buy an enormous 35mm FF lens with an oversized lens cap and a screen, that’s what a FF NEX would look like. It’s just not ergonomic, sorry. If you want a FF, buy a real DSLR.
– Most people want a FF camera simply because they like the idea of “Shooting Full-Frame”. 35mm FF gives you NO real advantage over APS-C, unless you’re a real PRO photographer, and then again, you would never buy a NEX, even if it has the best sensor in the world. I think Sony should concentrate on making some really fast E-mount primes instead.
– A FF NEX may not be technically feasible. Sure, there are some articles on the Internet from people pretending to know everything about light, optics and sensors who say that a FF NEX can be done. This however means that a lot of things around the lens mount should be rearranged and/or changed which implies that this no longer be an E-mount.
The RX1 is the best thing Sony can do for you “FF compact” shooters (for now) so take it or leave it.
“…I think it’s a smart move!”
Well, that’s great that you can voice your view, but so can others’ who think otherwise.
Street price a few months after release will be far less than the $2800 MSRP, it’ll probably be less than that once its available on Amazon and B&H. Look at how the Nex7 is going on sale, and its only been available in large number since March, so in 6 months its already being discounted. My personal all-time favorite lens is the Zeiss ZE 35/2 – which I gladly paid $1100 when I bought it and it was pretty much glued to my 5d2. With Sony’s new sensors, I have no doubt the RX1 will be far superior to the 5d2/ZE combo. When the price of this drops to about $2000 I’m buying one.
Hmm, at least they gave us an on-board flash on THIS camera. Guess it must not be for “pros”.
Lots of people complaining in a camera they’re not going to get anytime soon. C’mon, everyone is looking and waiting at the A99. This is just a proof of what Sony can do with FF sensor and a Carl Zeiss lens and another option for some people with money that want top quality in their jacket.
Sony got the engineers, not any single person here. How many here are optics engineers? How many are getting paid by Sony to do a camera. Geez…
But, Sony should release an excellent FW update for a lot of cameras, not just releasing new ones. And lenses too. I hope we see at least a lens roadmap.
Remember that firmware can be seen as bug fixes.
Canikon has many firmware updates because they rush their release.
I don’t think Sony’s interested in taking the same path. Firmware updates are less new features than bug fixes usually.
although Leica is more expensive, it has better resale value especially when sony will likely to produce more variation model in short term. RX1.1, RX2 😀
I would live to see an overlay with an RX100
Change my Nex-7 with 3 lenses for a RX1.
What a smash of a camera!!! FULL FRAME, so one of the 5 or 6 FF cameras in production today, only 3 times smaller. With an autofocus Zeiss 35 / 2, which of course nobody else has. For 2800. So if the Z35 would cost a grand, which is aggressive, people would still be getting a miniature next gen full frame, which nobody else can give you for $1800. Incredible news and kudos to SONY. This is a mythical camera coming around for the first time, lack of viewfinder notwithstanding. People will remember this as an all time great.
If this had been interchangeable lens, I would sell my Leica M6 and 5Dmkii now and be happy. As it is, I can’t justify that much cash for only one FOV. What a shame, Sony…
