The A7 effect: Plenty of refurbished or open box RX1 for sale :)

[shoplink 22640 ebay][/shoplink]

Curiosity: After the A7-A7r launch I noticed a dramatic increase of Open Box RX1 offers. It may be a good chance to grab that camera that still has plenty of reasons to exist. It’s damn small, and has a fast compact lens (one stop faster than the Zeiss 35mm FE). Here are the auctions I found:

Open BOX sales on eBay US:

  1. i dont trust open box…i’d rather have a used one from an owner who took better care for it. an open box in a store could have alot people touching the lens as they play around with it.

    1. My a900 was open box and it saved me $1000 off the price of a new one so I bought a three year warranty. I onky used the warranty for cleaning the sensor and that was after I had put over 20k shots on it. Open box can be a great deal! My a900 is still clicking too!

  2. Open box in the USA may mean the retailer has some to unload and to get around Sony price fixing, may be a new camera, never opened.

  3. There are many RX1 owners that bought it because that was the only portable FF camera available even though they really needed or wanted an interchangeable lens version.

  4. I was hoping that lots of used RX1s would turn up immediately for half the new price, that hasn’t happened yet but then again the A7 and A7r aren’t available in my country yet. but a RX1 for half the price that would be something I would consider. (if I had the money I would probably buy a new one, and if it was weather sealed I definitely would)

    1. Half price is a very long way away, I think. There are two “minor cosmetic damage” copies on Amazon right now for $1860, which I think is still a brilliant price – but the A7 and A7r aren’t going to impact the RX1 nearly as much as one would’ve thought before they were actually revealed.

      A. The RX1 is quite a bit smaller than the A7/r, even with the 35/2.8 lens attached.
      B. Though the 35/2.8 looks to be an excellent lens, it’s still a stop slower than the RX1’s.
      C. The RX1 has a nearly-silent leaf shutter.

The things that’ll really lower RX1 prices are the release of a cheaper FE-mount camera with a small NEX-5-style body and, as a poster said above, the purported Fuji X200.

      1. But you’re assuming that all rx1 owners need a body that’s smaller than an a7/r and a 35/2 lens. What about rx1 owners who want a smallish (smaller than DSLR) FF to use with other lenses, have faster AF, a better sensor, a sensor with more MPs, weather sealing, better video, built-in evf, etc.? Why wouldn’t they be interested in a a7/r over a rx1/rx1r? 😉

        1. If one wants interchangeable lenses, he/she probably shouldn’t have purchased the RX1 in the first place, no?
Plus, not only is the RX1 lens faster, but it is also sharper across the whole frame than the FE 35, if that matters to you.

  5. I bought my RX1 from Amazon Warehouse for $2250 at the beginning of last summer, so I’m not sure these deals are anything new.

The RX1 still holds several advantages over the A7/R, and I wouldn’t trade. They serve different purposes.

  6. Craigslist had 3 for $1700 when the A7 was announced. I bought all 3 and flipped it for $2000. I got plenty of interested buyers. These ones on eBay are still very expensive.

  7. I don’t know about the x-200. It would be an Rx-1 competitor worthy of an arms race.

The real next step would be the FF OMD or X-pro. If the Fuji mount could even house a FF you would have serious vengetting issues… And would need need like 45mp to get a crop mode around 10mp. So, on fujirumors you would still have everyone saying “where are the lenses?”

All that said… The more cameras, the better. It will only make life better for us camera lovers. And make work productivity worse for us SAR readers 😉

    1. FF OMD? Are people that delirious to even write FF and OMD next to each other? 😀

The lens mount diameter doesn’t need to be as big as the sensor diagonal. Don’t people know there’s such a thing as the Leica screw mount that’s like 39mm when the FF diagonal is 43mm+? Use a search engine before writing junk to mislead people.

The only restriction that comes from having a smaller mount diameter than the sensor diagonal is lenses with an exit pupil that is larger than the mount diameter will start to show the mount in the out of focus highlights.

Also there’s no restriction for Fuji to use the same X mount diameter for a FF. They can make one with a larger diameter with the same flange distance (or shorter) and allow the use if aps-c lenses in via adapters.

But using aps-c lenses on a FF camera is a complete joke. Manufacturers allow it only because it shuts people up… anyone who uses a FF lens won’t go back to APS-C after they see how much better FF is. So it’s a novelty thing at best.

    1. Of course not. They fill very different roles. The RX1/R is smaller and more discreet, and it has a lens that can’t be duplicated in an interchangeable mount. Either way, the RX1/R is the kind of camera Sony only needs to update every few years.

    1. No, it’s size. Because the mount of the A7 is so close to the sensor, and relatively small, there is a mechanical bottleneck that requires fast lenses to be relatively long. Sony probably wanted one small prime for everyday use with the A7, so they chose something with a small size over something faster that would be quite a bit larger.
