New Adobe Release Candidate adds support for the A7-A7r-RX10 and 28-70mm FE lens.

Adobe just added the support for the new A7-A7r and RX10 cameras. And there are also new lens profiles for the 20mm f/2.8 E-mount and 28-70mm FE lenses. Download them here:
Adobe Lightroom 5.3
Adobe Camera Raw 8.3 for CC
Adobe Camera Raw 8.3 for CS6

Now it will be nice to hear your comments about the A7-A7r RAW files converted in Lightroom. Let the testing begin!

UPDATE: SAR reader Nekton did run Imaging Resource RAW images thru Lightroom 5.3:
A7: ISO 6400 f/8 1/1600 https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4096871/AA7hSLI06400NR0.jpg
D600: ISO 6400 f/8 1/1250 https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4096871/D600hSLI06400NR0.jpg

    1. sorry to learn that 🙂 – have nothing against others falling into the CC trap, but this is not for me, not in the PRIS ridden traps era

        1. You’re right. D600 was exposed longer and is also slightly brighter which should result in less noise. Anyhow, they are close.

        2. I have to add though, that A7 seems to resolve a bit better if you look at the fabrics on the upper left corner. Again very marginal differences, but visible.

        3. Exposure is pretty much the same. Exposure time is different because the sensors differ on “stated ISO” and “TRUE ISO”. Probably D600’s ‘true ISO’ is about ISO5000 instead of ISO6400.
(assuming that the A7’s ISO 6400 is really 6400. But you get the idea)

People have to have that in mind.

          1. That could be true if they use the same lens. Different lenses have different transmission values, thus not all lenses are equally bright at f/8 etc.

        4. I know this is sort of trivial at this point but there is a difference on why the D600 “looks” better. It is smudging a bit, making noise slightly softer.

If you look at the circular thing next to the brush on the left, you’ll see the A7 keeps the finer lines better than D600.

So, you can achieve D600 “feel” with the A7 but not the other way around. Bionz is choosing to allow more luminance noise for a sharper result and Expeed chooses less luminance noise at the expense of details.

          1. +1 I was going to say the same thing. There was a comparison between the D800e and the A7R and I thought the same thing. A bit more luminance noise but a bit more detailed. Take your pick. Personally I prefer the Sony approach.

      1. Not a 100% fail comparison. Both cameras were using different Focal Length Lenses. And since the A7 had to double the exposure time (1/800 Sec) means that the A7 had lower ambient lighting conditions. I can also notice that the Samuel Smith bottle is casting a shadow in the A7 pic but not in the D600 pic. So, there could be an extra light maybe?

Never the less, the A7 still produces sharper details. I am guessing that the sharper images we have been seeing till now are not just the JPEGS. Impressive!

          1. hm..i would say d600 has a bit better iso performance, details

but if you edit in lightroom not much of a difference i´m shure

iso 100 comparisions as well for a 7 and d600 someone?

            thx!

  1. What happend to previous rumor about A7 ‘sort of’ microlens design? 🙂 And commission of Sony Sensor Devision about A7 sensor that it is the same lens offset used in A99?

Was it a joke? 🙂 I am very happy that Camera Raw support A7/A7R Raw before factory release (with A3000 it was about a week after factory release of A3000).

  2. Quick comparison of RX1 and RX1R makes me wonder if AA removal on demand is possible? That would make A7 even better camera!

  3. I double checked. The A7 image EXIF says 1/800s, not 1/1600s. Therefore, the A7 actually got more light than the D600.

    1. No, 1/800 vs 1/1600 means the camera had less light.
It needs to open the shutter for a full stop longer in order to achieve the same brightness. So, A7 got less light.

      1. 1/800 seconds is a longer time than 1/1600. Half a second (1/2) is a longer time than a quarter second (1/4) for instance.

        1. Hendrick is right, the longer the exposure time the less light, of course. Stop a while and think about it: to achieve the same exposure with half the light, you need to double the exposure time

    1. Yes, downsampling makes wonders. In particular, it removes small-scale noise pattern which is apparent in A7 files (even reduced a bit too). BTW what’s the source of that pattern? Does it present in all converters or is it Lr only?

      1. Other raw converters will produce different results. Bear in mind that these have zero luminance noise reduction on them.

    2. The only difference I see is slightly clearer texture in the green fabric. I think the difference you’ll see between the A7 and A7r will really only be apparent in detail and sharpness when you print large or do major cropping. (Still going with the A7r though.)

  4. Can someone tell me that A7 raw is supported by LR4 as well? Or everytime I buy new camera I have to buy new LR version?

    1. It is not supported and most probably never will be. You can use free Adobe DNG Converter to convert proprietary raws to DNG though. Those can be then used with LR4

  5. Shouldn’t a new generation camera like the A7/R deliver much better IQ than older generation competitors?
The above test sample doesn’t seem to provide evidence for that. The D600 is not old, true, but somehow the latest product like the A7/R should have the best output IMO. otherwise there is nothing for the competitor to achieve. I would be pleasantly surprised as a Nikon representative.

    1. The sensors seem to be the same “good old” ones (36MP as used in the D800E and 24MP as used in the A99), albeit with modified offset microlenses on the 36MP one. A new 36MP design would very probably have phase detection pixels integrated.

  6. Meanwhile NEX-7 price drops to 575 EUR in Sweden with the latest Sony cashback program. Would be very tempting without FF NEX on the horizon.

    1. It’s let me run the above 5.3 alongside LR4 just fine, don’t know whether it’ll flake out in 30 days time and ask me to license it or not though!(I have actually purchased upgrade to 5 as poart of my preorder for A7R before the above became available though. So far all I note is 5.3 Is incredibly slow when forst opened, could just be a stability issue in beta though as it’s fine afterwards. Haven’t tried an A7R rawfile througgh it yet though to see if my laptop can hack it!

      1. 5.3 is a release candidate, anyone can run it for free. It will have an expiration date built in, typically a few months after it has been made available, sometimes less.
