Dpreview posted the full interview with the Sony Senior General Manager of the Digital Imaging Business Group Kimio Maki and Sony US manager Mark Weir. Here are some of the key info:

1) Sensor:
To create a balance between resolution and ISO sensitivity. Usually, if you increase resolution, you have to sacrifice sensitivity. To achieve both we created a full-frame back-side illuminated sensor. We needed resolution of 40MP+ and we also needed ISO sensitivity greater than 6400, and in order to achieve that balance, this [BSI CMOS] technology is necessary. Once you’ve gathered the light, improving processing speed is an important issue, so we changed the wiring inside the sensor from aluminum to copper, and reversed the structure. So we’ve improved the resolution and the ISO sensitivity over the original a7R.
2) About the Canon 5ds:
We wanted to overcome the idea that has been prevalent since as long as there have been digital cameras, that you can have one virtue [resolution] or the other [sensitivity] but you can never have both. Look at the Canon EOS 5DS. A maximum ISO sensitivity of 6400, and crippled movie capability. Canon says that it intentionally created the camera to fit the requirements of certain photographers, and [has thereby demonstrated] that the material science of their device technology [cannot] accomplish both objectives.
3) About the RAW compression:
Right now it is the same, yes. We’re still working on it. In the future we may change the software but that’s not completed yet. We have consumers who require 14-bit etc., and we’re considering [how to deal with it].
4) About the competition:
As you know we don’t have the same history [as some of our competitors] in the camera market, so if we just did the same thing as Canon and Nikon we’d lose. Because we don’t have the same brand image as a camera maker. So we have to think about what the consumer needs.
The customer’s voice is the most important data for me, when we’re creating a new product. Of course when we create a new camera we look at competitive products as a reference, but the most important thing is the voice of the customers.
5) DSLR advantage over mirrorless:
That advantage is getting smaller and smaller. I don’t know when we will [surpass] that technology but we will do our best.
6) Lenses:
Our lenses have to be better than Canon’s. That is my mission. We have already made a 35mm F1.4 and 90mm macro – both were based on customer’s requirements, and also we have a full F4 zoom lineup, so our next lenses will be at the upper end of the lineup. And also aperture. A F2.8 lineup is necessary, and brighter [primes].
—-
To sum up the good news: Sony is likely listening to the customers and that means that better RAW files, faster primes, telephoto lenses and f/2.8 zooms. It’s also important to underline how Sony is sure that Mirrorless will soon close the gap with DSLR cameras. Which also means their A-mount system would become “redundant” when this happens.

This is great, 2.8 zooms and all, now who is a potential buyer of Sony lenses and doesn’t want or require a manually controlled aperture on the lens body and who wouldn’t like to see major improvement in manual focus handling of all lenses where possible? (This question is rhetorical, lets ALL demand these!) What better differentiator from modern Canikon 35mm camera lineup of lenses and even other systems- aside from quality? No more should we be even able to qualify; ‘but this was better’ or still is with older otherwise redundant equipment…Bring back full manual control for the photographer, and incidentally in full convergence with video use! Also weather sealed fantastic primes please!
Don’t care much for mechanical manual arpeture control, altough it would be nice, but I do care about mechanical MF linkage. Fly by wire MF is a pain to use and is nearly useless for critical focus.
Ever used manual aperture? Its many times faster obviously, also ideal if you change aperture and compare the results in shooting, for instance getting the best balance of exposure and ISO level, which is a basic prerequisite of shooting highest quality images no matter the equipment.
Yes, I have used it. I have a Rokkor MC 58/1.4, converted to A-Mount. Don’t see what such a big deal is. I’m just as good in using the control dial to change arpeture and the preview button for the DOF/Exposure preview.
Preview button: please respect then that users who NEVER use a preview button require manual aperture control at ALL times as a prerequisite of effective and comfortable shooting, now we can argue whether the thumb dial is as effective but why bother, it isn’t yet and wont be for the foreseeable future, until our thumbs are used more than our hands and manual dexterity: never most likely. You are playing devils advocate or whatever so accept this fact. We can shoot out all you want because manual will win every time regardless, lets have it back along with manual focus: which is actually more difficult to achieve effectively and pleasingly even historically, aperture is JUST basic functioning, therefore I will accept your vote along for it with manual controls generally.
Dude chill. I did say that “I don’t care much for it, although it would be nice”. No idea what you’re on about. Someone might need it, I personally don’t, but wouldn’t mind it. What I do care about is mechanical MF linkage. For the times when I use AF, it makes no difference, but when I try to use MF, fly-by-wire linkage in the way it is designed today, makes it impossible to achieve a critical focus. Sure, it will be in focus, or close enough to it, but you can never get it tack sharp with fly-by-wire linkage.
I’m chilled. You are unsure of how aperture might be simpler to implement than best focus, but consider that no modern lenses and many historical fail in this regard and you might realize its harder than aperture which has been disregarded, and therefore could be a given before focus improvement if you want more manual control of any kind~
You are wrong, get a Sony cam and find out, because you CAN get good focus on wire focus, but its annoying and detracts from shooting experience. If you fail in that one can only wonder if you even set aperture for effect at all. What aids correct focus is in fact sharpness of lens, presumably wide open where it has the shallows depth of field to detect finest changes.
I have a Sony camera, and it’s in A-Mount. One of the main reasons i’m still holding on to this mount is because I can’t stand the E-Mount MF implementation. You can turn the focus ring slow enough that the camera will not respond at all. I call that a horrible implementation!
I have one AF lens. And I cant count the others. But I want aperture as much personally and its not difficult to implement, my fully manual primes have so so focus feel as far as I am concerned so you are literally preaching to the converted, I want perfect focus feel in future but am realistic about it. Mechanical linking could help, but is that the first step at the moment?
What are you even on about? How is an aperture ring “many times faster” than a thumb dial? And what’s the preview button got to do with it?
>who is a potential buyer of Sony lenses and doesn’t want or require a manually controlled aperture on the lens body and who wouldn’t like to see major improvement in manual focus handling of all lenses where possible?
A lot of people who’ve never used manual focus and couldn’t care less, I guess.
Canon has crippled the 5Ds with “material science”.
Sony crippled the a7r II with the stupidity of with 11 bit lossy raw.
Hello Canon fanboy !!
Not many people need it so I would not call it crippled especially seeing they can change it with software.
Users can remove the lossy compression with software?
Sony can
exactly.
Who needs it? I’m sure you can’t tell difference between 8-bit and 10-bit lossy RAW even if you pull +8 stops in 200% zoom nightsky. You may st there all night and still not find 1 pixel that is different.
It’s mostly uneducated trolls from dying Canikon forums who keep complaining of this mantra.
Not true. There are scenarios under which only a few stops would be sufficient. But yes, they are so rare, that I don’t know what all the fuss is about.
Speak for yourself, dear chap.
Do the same. Then let’s count.
if you open the lossy raw file with 16bit color in PS or LR, you won’t tell the difference.
let me give you an example, the 14bit is the amount of water a pool can contain, but in reality, cmos often can only record no more than 11bit of water, canon and nikon just gives a bigger pool for the water. but if you don’t have that much water to fill it, then no difference in most cases
under extreme condition, there might be more than 11bit of water, so what sony did is, they take the original data, say 12bit, and compress them with a smart calculation, for example when two data are the same, they will compress them to one, but take notes which two they are. so instead of remember all the data, they save it in a formula pattern
If you just open the file as what it originally is, you end up seeing the loss, but if you open it in 16bit color file. it’s like analyze the file with the formula from which it was compressed. then you can get the original data back.
this is how most professional retoucher do when they face with lossy file.
not to mention, most printer can only do 8bit if you want them on real print
Just because you can not tell the difference, does not mean others can’t.
You are assuming that this “smart calculation” works. It doesn’t.
What “professional retoucher” doesn’t work in 16 bit? lol. I don’t give a toss that printers can only do 8 bit. It’s far too late at that point.
“Just because you can not tell the difference, does not mean others can’t.”
Lol, the usual nonsense. I am sure you see that difference in other comments like yours. There’s simply no real output where this can ruin a shot and nobody has proven otherwise for all the whining that we have seen.
I think they are still missing one key f/4 zoom lens, the 24/28mm – 105/120mm f/4 lens. It could in theory be variable say f/4~5.6, but it would need to be top tier optics, which according to most the 24-70mm f/4 is not, even thought many do enjoy this lens a lens I am planning to get with the A7rII. I feel it is also necessary to get a high grade “G” or Sony/Zeiss 70-300/400 variable aperture in native FE mount (with preferable a 67mm filter thread size or smaller). I am not asking for inexpensive, but quality zooms even if they are $1000-$1500. I want quality and function to match or exceed what is currently available, including the A7rII.
That said, I love the innovation and push sony has done in the A7rII camera. Way to go!
Although it would certainly not be cheap, a 70-200/2.8 is a lens I would really like to see from Sony. Good to hear that Sony is going to consider them important and probably make them according to the interview, although they will probably defeat the weight factor (but maybe Fresnel elements could help here). But, nobody is forced to buy one.
Sony is already on they’re second 70-200/2.8 G lens, but A-mount, of course!
Mr Kimio seems to be quite old man, but don’t know of basic productes they have offered few years ago! There is a choice between non-compressed and compressed raw in A700 and A850/A900 cameras, with a possibility to save two files – jpg in selected resolution and raw simultaneously.
OK this is how we confirmed that A mount is dead.
E mount F2.8 Zoom is coming
You can finally put it to rest, when Sony has built out a good lens lineup, that rivals A-Mount as well as brought AF speed up to par with A-Mount.
Until then, it’s all just talks.
With the current pace of development, i’d say A-Mount is here for another 5 years. At the very least…
Let’s say:
A-mount is’t dead, yet. But is is dying.
And until A-mount will be dead there will be some more other fine A-mount products to be released.
Hope the A7S II will get 14 bit raw then
What would your dream lens be? Mine is a 135/2 in style of the 35/1.4 (love the aperture ring).
24-70 f2.8 and 24-105 f4 please in native FE
Lets have a 24-105 2.8, the time is right for it. In a fix you can use that great sensor to even view the tele equiv and shoot with it. I would really like to have the 24 shifted over to 21 or 20 ideally too.
Might as well buy a pickup truck with it, so that you’ll have something to carry it. Not going to be a small lens…
Ah you again, at the masters heels, well, I want that lens instead of three, YES three with unnecessary range being ALL that the camera makers supply otherwise at 2.8, capiche? Or are these NOT useful ranges for you anyway? for zooms with variable range built into one lens for convenience of composition and negation of lens switching. Weight is irrelevant because primes are lighter than zooms in combination in the case of the main ones (this is more like the smart 120-300mm 2.8 in this regard, better than weight combination of primes or zooms! and price!). If you want unthinking populist system consider what the Canikons have already, all they have built up when they were the only competition with each other. And also consider weather sealing as a requirement if you require it, THATS what might add bulk along with AF and so on~ don’t want those either?
You need to take the chill pill. That’s for sure…
I don’t mind lenses that are on the large and heavy side, in fact, i’m changing my 70-300 to 70-200/2.8, but what you’re talking about is probably going to rival the Sigma 50-500. Don’t know about you, but to me that lens is “Too Big”.
You want it? good for you. Don’t expect anyone to make it though. Price and weight are probably going to be at the point, where it makes more sense to buy a 24-70/2.8 and a 105/135 prime.
Those sort of zooms have high image quality and image stabilizer and weather sealing, or do they? do yours have those? do they have the best image quality of any such lens? are they good value? Answer all the above to find out if in fact such a lens that goes to 24 from 70 and less to 105 than 200 to answer whether this ideal lens could in fact be a reality in useable scale for those interested in an all in one for many purposes: too numerous on principle to list. Hmmm the advantage of this flange distance for fast wide angle in compact form, could that help too?
I find the SAL1635Z, SAL2470Z and SAL70200G, and their subsequent versions with faster AF, to be a perfect combination. They have image quality on par with competitors, price on par with competitors as well as size and weight.
More zoom almost always means compromized image quality, and that’s not something i’d like to see on a lens that costs a few thousand $$$
Yes, If it wasn’t extremely sharp but perfectly useable and had ideal rendering which a zoom doesn’t totally negate the potential for, and was handy enough to be less weight than the 24-70 and 70-200 in combination, it would be ideal, and I believe it will be as soon as they make it 🙂 You know, the cut off point of aperture is hardwired for quality constraints and some lenses have a larger image circle to assure no distortion etc, so something like this with reasonable expectations of image quality and nice rendering is surely as possible as the diminutive f/4 equivalents, with a little scaling of course and widest aperture for shallow effect more so than just effective sharpness and light gathering properties. Make this sort of lens Sony please! I don’t want the other sort at all.
Sigma 120-300 F2.8 Sport is the only lens I want at this moment.
Sadly, it is not available in a-mount.
I second that. The f2.8 without OSS.
70-400 f4-5.6 G OSS
300-600 f5, or 300-800 f6.3 somewjere in the $3000-3500 range.
Include built in barrel exyension fpr close focus mode, and possibly internal teleconverters.
That may be a nice lens. The Zeiss 135/2 apo-sonnar is very impressive.
Slower and smaller lenses. Currently missing in pretty much all systems.
In terms of hardware. May i add to his words.
‘Sets up field defences for the next round of completely time wasting nay saying’ I’ve thoroughly prepared for all hipsterism with the: ‘give me aperture and great manual focus and the system will be perfect’ qualification~and in relation to that might I add, don’t follow Canikon to their demise, rendering quality of lenses first before speed and speed as a means to better rendering at wider stop down points, and correction as a means to wider useable apertures, but not at the cost of OOF rendering and over reliance on in body aberration correction in respect of ALL focal lengths without excuses! Obviously keep on with sensible size considerations for what must remain a compact system and thus the most desirable for me as a very serious user and absolute differentiator from the competition alongside the all round greatness. I will always like to carry a lot of different glass, and have requirement for it not to be incredibly bulky or heavy or with too many examples of overkill and over assumption of particular use and overspecialization for presumed context. A TOTAL photography, and now burgeoning video system.
Although Sony listen to customer (#4 bullet) approach bit different with Fuji.We known Fuji practiced Kaizen with often FW upgarde while Sony focus real leap technologies in new camera releases. I think the interviewer forgotten the next question – when is the time for global shutter?
I recalled in past we talk hype of mirrorless after birth of Nex7 tri-Navi, what must be in a FF mirrorless to be no #1 FF mirrorless:
1. Foveon sensor (not happen – tech ready with multiple techniques)
2. IBIS 5 Axis (2015)
3. 4K Internal (2015)
4. High ISO 409600 (not happen – tech limitation – usable 12800?)
5. Splash/Weather Seal (not happen – cost factor / 2015)
6. Global Shutter (not happen – tech ready)
7. 14 bit raw (not happen – demanding – in progress)
8. 240FPS FHD 1920×1080 (not really happen – via fw upgrade maybe)
9. 4D advanced AF system (2015)
Sony scores the bold one of 5axis IBIS, big one! follow by 4D AF system, decent one! 4K internal on current market demand (new baseline) and then BSI slight improve high ISO. Long journey to go no1 crown but worth the tries 🙂
What’s Kaizen got to do with firmware updates?
Nothing.
You’re smarter than you lead on.
I joined the Sony family because it was young, adventerous and did not follow the norm. Whilst the A-mount cameras have never quite reached the top they have been amazing cameras to own. The introduction of the A7 series and now the A7r II confirm to me that I made the right choice. My investment in my A-mount glass is secure and I have an opportunity in the future to have the pick of some amazing cameras too. Thank you so much Sony. Si
I just found my twin.
I think there are many like-minded brothers and sisters here 😉
Yep, there are 🙂
lol
haven’t used a Canon in 10 years.
This is the first time I’ve seen a Sony manager actually come out and say that they’re working to make DSLRs obsolete. Until now the party line had been that they’re committed to both DSLR and mirrorless. Now we know.
Technically the previous system continues in perfect emulation, much like how originally you could play playstation one games on playstation 2 with no problem.
Unless someone can prove that the distance to sensor or ‘air’ between flange difference makes telephoto lenses or previous mount lenses impossible or even effects them at all i don’t think there can be any argument over this fact. In fact Sony flange distance makes an improvement for wide angle lenses with wide apertures which are really cool, and makes them more compact to boot.
Sony stopped making DSLR’ in 2011, last model was A580
I’m pretty sure they’re including the SLT models in the DSLR category.
What do you want to hear?
We managed to get E-mount to the quality level as A-mount but we don’t release that products because E-mount is not made to compete with A-mount, nor Canon nor Nikon?!?
It has nothing to do with what I want to hear. I’m merely noting that their story has changed.
Well – I think it was an interview about their new products – especially A7Rii. Why should Sony always mention A-mount when it is not the topic right now? Be patient: When A99ii will be released there will be some people here, claiming that E-mount is dead. 🙂
BTW:
A-mount was likely to die since May 2010, when NEX-5 was released. And since Sep 2012, when NEX-VG900 was announced, it was very obvious that A-mount is dying.
But as long as A-mount is dying, it is not dead! And it will continue dying for more than 5 years and you can enjoy some more fine A-mount products to be released.
Sony has niether been commited to or made a dslr for a very long time.
If I had Canon and Nikon stock, I’d be selling it and buying Sony.
If you compare the sales, you’d quickly realize that selling Canon/Nikon would be a mistake.
I have been repeatedly asking for IBIS and full high speed af compatability since the first Nex camera was announced.
I have been asking for higher resolution much longer than that, and I have been asking for ff higher resolution BSI sensors for several years now.
Sony is finally listening to consumers like me and is/will be very successfull because of this.
Imagine how much more successfull they would be if they had listened to me sooner.
They couldn’t be faster, no UFO in their garage.
I would like to see a FE 24-50 F2.8, FE 24-105 F4 and a FE 70-300 F4.5-5.6
For a-mount:
35 F1.4 (new)
135 F1.8 (mark II)
I would like to see an updated 135 F1.8 having owned the mark I. Si
FE 400 f5.6
Nice too
70-400G 4.5-5.6
150-600 5.6-6.7
135mm F1.4
NO! Please don’t cripple the 24-70 f/2.8 for the sake of the non-existent ‘compactness’.
New FE lenses should be direct counterparts of A-Mount lenses, if they are serious about replacing the A-Mount
The only thing Sony still is lacking for me is service. Too many firmware bugs remain unfixed, and spare parts are ridiculously expensive. Moreover, they give the impression that buying into a Sony system isn’t future-proof. Now, this interview makes a different impression … does Sony start becoming interested in those customers who really think before they buy?
Depends. Other brands have other problems. While Sony tend to be inconsistent, at least they are rarely boring. And, at least their bodies tend to be cheaper.
Well he just said it…a line up of 2.8 lenses on the way. A mount’s days are numbered. They are numbered- period, done and end of story. A total end result of Sony’s actions.
The a7000 is rumored to have the fastest AF of any camera.
Now that Fast focus lens compatability and IBIS are on E mount there is little advantage to a mount, except the lack of an adapter.
The new sturdier lens mount and probable better sturdier adapters to come will minimize even that.
There will be at most one, but probably ZERO new A mount cameras made, but ever since Nex became popular I have talked about the neccesity of a “safety net” to assure A mount users that they can continue to use thier A mount stuff after A mount is dead.
That is what we are finally seeing, a safety net, and that indicates to me that this is yhe end, Sony has pulled the life support plug on A mount
RIP
Probably too early to play a funeral hymn. I’d say give it another 5 years. Pre-production A7rII is nowhere close to native A-Mount. Let’s see if that’s the maximum speed it will ever have, or will there be firmware improvements that will take it closer to A-Mount.
One new A mount camera at the most, probably ZERO.
5 years will definitely not happen.
A6000 was officially announced to have the fastest AF of any camera.
But many reviewers figured out, it was a lie. Most up-to-date DSLRs had been still faster and there had been some other mirrorless that had been on par with A6000.
With that experience I expect A7000 to be fast enough – but not to have the fastest AF of any camera.
There will always be some debate which is fastest, but the existance of a faster one does not make the other one slower.
The a7000 is a puff of smoke. I was in a big camera shop today, clerk was very knowledgable so I mentioned that I didn’t think the rumored a7000 was coming after all. He said nothing, but nodded silently and looked at the ceiling for a significant moment.
Sad but true…
Yep, only a matter of time. The way I see it is that it could go two ways:
1) Sony will release a firmware upgrade for A7rII, which would make it as fast or close enough to A-Mount. In this scenario A-Mount will become obsolete in 2015-2016
2) Current performance of A7rII is the maximum that Sony can pull off with today’s tech, in which case A-Mount is here to stay until about 2020
Hmmm, they are currently now using hybrid tech and algorithms and processing and you draw the line already, for what reason exactly? If you are trolling, isn’t it better to do it TO someone and not someone who isn’t even in the conversation? Or at a new fantastic technology at its inception :/
I see typing, also, isnt this just the incarnation of similar tech on smaller sensor imparted to much higher resolution, something they are obviously working on and will be a problem for ALL systems no doubt, in future.
I have no idea what you just said right there….
Higher resolution imaging=more difficult to refine AF
Troll=not understand simple
Read=your own comment about the two factors, now addressed properly
Consider=contrast AF can be refined to an extent that phase cannot without replacing entire sensor with detection points?, AF tech hasn’t really been my consideration, I don’t think its suitable for setting focus accurately at all, and these new technologies might improve it to the point it is.
When you try to insult someone, at least try to construct sentences properly. Also it is a good idea to use google to find a proper definition of a word, before you use it.
Exactly what part of my comment is trolling?
Algorithmical improvement can be done to the point where even a complex matter becomes simple, you are negating this whole idea with your comment, which is illogical and cannot be reduced from stupid with real debate. Now you are talking nonsense. For instance, in early digital era of computing, it would be much more effective to calculate say the suspension of a car to model it with ANALOG computing than DIGITAL, in fact, this part we are addressing is DIGITAL, so imagine how now a digital process can easily achieve what once analog would surpass. I’m self taught so I will study what is actually relevant to me thanks.
Will the analog component limit this improvement any further? No by definition it can’t, the DIGITAL can improve with implementation, however, the analog parts may not be drastically improved upon at this point, and at some point something analog may return to improve further still, we cannot say it won’t.
Looks like being self-taught isn’t really working out.
How does what you just said, is relevant in any way to what I said about A-Mount becoming obsolete? Or are you just rambling on about something, while trying to squeeze smart words into every sentence?
Analog and digital are basic, like 15+ years ago basic.
I guess that does sum it up as rambling about who know’s what. Good luck with that…
contrast detect isn’t all reading sensor information can do, and can even preempt direction and amount of defocus, if it did that at a rate higher than your other modes of operation can self ordinate by scrubbing around it could guide them faster not slower. A bit like if you actually used brain to think. If your modes are direct and don’t need to scrub around that’s cool too, i wonder what the limit of accuracy of them is regards matching higher and higher resolutions of sensor.
Maybe you should use your brain to start writing coherent sentences and not just a bunch of words thrown together, hoping it will make sense.
English actually.
It gets a lot more subtle, in reference to game consoles of yesteryear, 😉 analog computing is SLOW and digital is FAST, 8 bit is FASTER than 16 bit. With these SUPER high resolutions we just have to bite the bullet and Over Power the whole device digitally to get it fast and functional, the return is FANTASTIC QUALITY OUTPUT and ultimately a smart responsive tool. Remember when Windows came out that functioned as a standardized bed for cool new 3d heavy games, and we were like how??? it hogs more memory itself!!! how can they run better AND faster on same machine, well, anyone still use dos for gaming? Stick with canikon…
All the intermittent posts at other posts that you embellish your self ‘misunderstanding’ and completely false statements with.
Hilarious
I make the statement as fact rather than blowing off steam this time around. The A7RII’s focusing is promising. At least we’re not being left in the dust with no options. I’m much more confident in adaptability now than prior. Still, I think the cats out of the bag on this one. A mount probably has another 5 years before mass fade out.
Oh, i’m not saying that you’re wrong, i’m just expanding on the thought, depending on the route that Sony is going to take with A7rII.
I also feel much better about adapting than ever before. At least now, with A7rII tech, E-Mount seems like an alright proposal. Add to that ability to use just about anything out there and the switch suddenly begins to make sense.
Gotcha…. I think what I was trying to say is that I’m excited about the new focusing and adapter possibilities. I laid a lot of criticism on FE earlier on…but I’m coming around now:)
But they are a bunch of liars still. Not worth a dime
Sony is still catching up. Canon is still too lazy to do anything.
Only in market share. In technology they are moving forward so quick, it is crazy.
There will be a point when it will be too late for Canon. And I believe it is coming fast.
It’s nice to see that a Sony exec is finally admitting that high end users REQUIRE 14 bit color and not the horseshit 11+7 bit color Sony has provided to date. For those that can’t see the difference, it’s because you don’t have the proper equipment (large color corrected wide gamut screen and video card capable of driving such a screen accurately). Under such conditions you may not see or know the difference but if you ever move along to become more than a snapshot photographer making small prints you will want that Sony addressed this sooner than later. Now is the time to support 14 bit color instead of being a fan-boy because at the moment of capture, every photo you take with a Sony mirrorless camera is locked in with 11+7 bit lossy and compressed color. There is no fix for the image once taken.
Now here is something I do agree on. Once you take an image, you can’t fix it. So while yes, i’ve never encountered the issue in 11+7, I’d rather have it in 14-bit, just in case.
As it usually happens, the still that you like the most, is the one that is going to exhibit that issue.
If you have money for a top of range nikon and the computing for any size of file without ANY problems in processing and always access such equip in developing your shots and don’t want to use all those funds for something like medium format instead where the resolution hike alone accounts for the file size sure don’t use the cam with my favourite dimensions and compact lenses to match, interchangeable mount with improved wide angles and some m mount lenses, canon with AF and stabilizer AND nikon lenses to some degree, Sony/Zeiss range of superior glass and all the progress. Have I missed any reason why you would actually choose canikon instead? I don’t care, I WANT Sony system exactly for what it is, is that so difficult to comprehend. I am extremely objective regards main factors such as image quality and for all that is, I also like it to be easy to use and for me manual focus adaptability is absolutely ideal at this time with all the BEST lenses to use on it. If you would rather debate the significance of that random issue as the main component rather than the actual motivations for a choice between say all the systems on a table in front of you if you even used cameras and did photography, photography itself is perhaps too objective for you…You have Sony new cam and Nikon or whatever else you use, which do you take with you for something, is it ever NOT the Sony now, and why would that be, or have your generalizations with no basis now eaten themselves and chosen Sony too?
Thankyou, at least someone here gets it. The damage it does to files is terrible and irreversible. Once you see it you can’t look past it.
Very true. It’s hard to ‘unsee’ it.
But there’s as much difficulty from fanboys to ‘see it’.
There’s some psychology behind this but I suspect it’s equally new users and inadequate equipment.
https://sonyvnikon.wordpress.com/2015/03/25/why-sony-fanboys-fail-to-see-the-light-and-14-bit-color/
The concern trolls are back but keep in mind the fact that this camera with whatever raw processing will blow away anything you’re using now. But thanks for the thought Katshit Nakadouchebag.
Here, mate, here.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sony-alpha-7-s/samples/ARW_compression/ARWcompression-FullCrop-FullRes.jpg
Now keep it shut.
Journalists can’t clone around compression artifacts. They are not supposed to be there to begin with. If you don’t work your photographs as much, or you lack the skills to do so, don’t berate those of who are affected by the issue. Choice is not an unreasonable request and it benefits everyone.
Who knows, maybe you’ll be the first to download the lossless RAW update.
That looks like the screen reduction multiplies the aberration, but if you pre-sized it wouldn’t, any editor ought to show web size images or options not just squeeze it through some horrible reduction process that enhances jpeg faults, that’s how it looks because i don’t see it on the actual page so much. The image was processed from RAW, no? why not? the journalist cant make the image selected good quality? I reckon the whole image is GLOWING and set wrongly but thats me and they MUST have blue radiant sky along with pure beaming surfaces of night life to make their story have impact, do you also notice the curious halos up to the tower, is that out of cam jpeg? or BAD tone mapping and sharpening where a smoother result would have sufficed? whats the fix? cant it be reduced using a REAL algorithm, because sure, almost all screen reduction and display is lossy too compounding it IF you left it that way. so actually instead of JUST bemoaning, you could have a dither fix for ALL jpeg aberration and improve all images pushed through horrible compounding process in viewing, no? I don’t really care about matter and seeing this these are a few ideas. Journalists should still develop from RAW if they need to and NOT use tone mapping where it enhances flaws, or at all if they don’t know how to use it, they should have UNdifferentiated lights from darks with less contast and not enhanced them along with phantom contrast area around…
That’s an A7s shot. So, only 12mp. Read the URL.
12mp is a lot more than my monitor or this interface.
Why buy Sony? Because Nikon does not offer mirrorless he wants. Why hate Sony? Because he wanted the best but Sony simply undermined its raw quality.
You like DXO testing because its all equivalent due to safeties(despite being irrelative between cams for instance), but is your photography or anyone else’s so immaculate and each shot vital in production and unique events never missed but rather always captured as to supersede the infraction of this terrible problem in a fraction or no cases in evidence? (no)
The ‘mirrorless’ with now the best image quality and most likely usability too of any 35mm sensor camera, for less expense? (no thanks, nikon would do exactly that with Sony’s own backlit sensor without this imperceptible artefact which makes all my photos look like bad cartoons in comparison on closer inspection)
I always reckon it is not specs that give you great photo. But hey, I am paying for a gadget. As I am unwilling to pay $2800 USD for an A99 today, some might find it difficult to pay for A7r with crippled raw file. Specs is not definitely everything. But film cameras can still produce great pictures, why you bother getting a digital one.
Oh, yes, one of the three examples we’ve seen to date. And where’s the raw file?
The raw is online at DPREVIEW. Crappy Sony file can’t handle 3 EV.
The reason why ?
The discrete color values weren’t ever captured.
You should’ve zoomed to 500%!
That +3 Ev blows highlights. Instantly making it not a valid scenario. The original image is also already exposed to the right.
Why not turn down highlights and turn up shadows, thereby compressing dynamic range. You’re still going to see the same issue, but at least it will not look like you’re deliberately overexposing.
There has been too much discussion over compression or not, for example Nikon’s 12 and 14-bit raw. Compressed raw is just worse. http://www.nx101.com/12vs14.html
This might be demanding but it is an expensive camera. After all you can’t always do HDR. Sony should allow people to choose what they want to use, not lecturing people that they don’t need 14-bit, which is no different from lecturing people that they don’t need FF or higher DR.
I’m not dismissing that there isn’t an issue. Just saying that the point could have been proven in a real-life scenario, rather than blowing highlights for the sake of showing the issue. The same image could have been processed in a different fashion, where it would still show the issue, but would reflect a real world scenario.
Heck, you don’t even need to process the image to see the issue. You can see that problem in the original.
And you guys do this for fun instead of helping with useful photography websites…
Well, some just want the best they can get and a mirrorless. Unfortunately Nikon does not make FF mirrorless so they have to stick with Sony. You see why now.
Because Nikon doesn’t make a mirrorless? or because in Sony they get the best they can from mirrorless? Or just to make the false outmoded point implicit that Nikon use Sony sensor better than Sony themselves as a point of equivalence, a safety if you will of the test between front runners, mirrorless values vs DSLR and who now have ‘cough’ 42MP backlit ‘cough’ and Canon otherwise has mirrorless be it not ‘FF’ and pattern noise when dynamic range is ‘improved’ through any tone mapping from what is already lower than the other two. STILL in second place before Sony because they have no invisible compromise of output after all salient aberration and lack of dynamic range and noise is removed from the equation leaving Sony still third in estimation, Reduced to NIKON beats SONY at every point. No Nikon don’t. And if Sony reintroduce aperture control and good manual focus action: advantage Sony outright.
Nikon doesn’t have FF mirrorless. The imx094 in d810 is an improved version with doubled trap capacity. That’s why dxo results is better for d810.
If nikon has a d810 variant which is a mirrorless camera, i doubt a lot people would just switch to Nikon.
You said: ”Unfortunately Nikon does not make FF mirrorless so they have to stick with Sony.” You post that with 88 upvotes to your account.
And posted this before: ”Let me take reaction energy for an example. If you ever learned high school chemistry, you would recall that you could not calculate absolute heat stored in any molecules. But you could compare them against one another and see the difference. The same applies to DxO data. Alone it is not quite useful. But since they apply the same test scheme each time, results are quite comparable. Unless you accuse them of showing inconsistent or false data.”
Science?
”We will see. I am not sure if BSI can be made into curved sensors. Samsung’s BSI sensors also won a lot of praising but no one seems to be buying their sensors. BSI might hurt one or two things in the lab.”
You think BSI sensor such as that in new Sony cam is trouble in general?
wow, have a life bro. Sony Alpha Rumor shouldn’t be a significant part of your life.
Sony isn’t lecturing anyone. While I would agree with the idea of Sony providing 14-bit and that there is an issue, it is so overblown that it borders on the ridiculous. Unless, of course, one’s idea of photography is pushing the exposure multiple stops and looking at the results at 300% magnification. It is an issue that will rarely show even in the conditions I just described, let alone transpire on a print or a downscaled file for the web.
now the problem of matching that ‘reduction’ to the material fact there are bloated shifts in contrast akin to tone mapping around the tower..the result of lots of incorrectly applied sharpening, not a simple jpeg output so not the fault even of out of cam processing….like i said it properly before you.
Why change the natural tones of the situation at all? That’s not light pollution that’s radiation and the blue will already make it pleasantly toned and vibrant.
Tones? I never said anything about tones.
I’m strictly talking exposure.
Of differential areas. Else Stan, you could simply lower the exposure down to what it was before non instructive test and forget about it. Or look at the out of camera jpeg and try and find it. Would you like to control the out of camera jpeg sharpening? Perhaps you can anyway.
Switch it off completely despite the bayering, why? its during debayering isnt it? and anything done selectively after will have lost not gained much in the image data.
Your psychiatrist called. You left your medication at his office…
The police called, they are monitoring your nihilistic anarchistic political activities. Would you join forces?
Awesome! Let them in! We’ll chill together. I’ve got beer and chicks. The party is getting started.
Edit: All police women must wear a**less chaps! Men in that kind of attire are not welcome… 🙂
Same thing happened when I only brought up shadows. No doubt it’s a poorly taken image (underexposed) but I can assure you that a Nikon 14 bit file could push and pull this out of the dumps. With Sony it just isn’t there.
Well, you know what, this is why some folks say people don’t need full frame cameras and APSCs are just as good.
Having options is a nice thing. 14 bit for really demanding work, 12 bit lossless compressed for weddings where you are at higher ISOs anyway and 11+7 for casual shots.
“For those that can’t see the difference, it’s because you don’t have the proper equipment”
Yeah, that is the problem.
Why are you so insistent on this issue? We already have the perfect camera for you in our Nikon Df but you went and bought our (ill-suited for accurate manual focus) Nikon D810. We respectfully suggest your credentials are severely lacking to judge our friends at SONY.
Wide gamut screen has nothing to do with it.
When 11+7 artifacts are visible, they are visible on any screen.
Happy to learn new high-quality lenses are one of Sony’s priority.
Sony, now that we know you are listening customers’ voice :-), one request:
• since IBIS is now standard with A7II and A7rII, can you please remove the (now redundant) OIS from future FE lenses which should hopefully reduce the lenses’ size/weight/cost? Thanks in advance.
YES!
Except for lenses with focal-ranges longer than 210mm!
What DSLR advantage is he talking about?! The AF speed? ‘Cause that’s really the only advantage I can see besides the lenses range but that’s another thing not related to the mirrorless technology. –> http://ilovehatephoto.com/2015/01/12/10-reasons-to-switch-from-a-dslr-to-a-mirrorless-system-with-examples-nikon-to-sony/
I don’t know, I’m not that technical about those camera factors but could it be the difficulty, now somewhat addressed, of implementing AF without mirror deflection of any sort, through sensor but at once at these new astronomically high resolutions DSLR haven’t been known for…before the SONY!
My guess is that it’s AF. What’s interesting is that the A6000’s PDAF with E-mount lenses is lightyears ahead of the AF of any DSLR I’ve used before, although Pentax has never been known for particularly amazing AF.
The A7RII is a major leap forward in terms of having pretty good AF even with A-mount lenses (and similarly adapted ones). Probably one more iteration of that technology and mirrorless Sonys will be on par with most if not all DSLRs.
I guess you haven’t tried those new AF from modern DSLR.
For example the new 79-points AF from Sony A77mk2,
it is a mile ahead of A6000, especially at less than optimal lighting condition.
Why is that? I’m curious, and don’t know about AF systems much. Is that SLT with like a dedicated separate sensor for the purpose? Well, I’ve discussed a few things that could improve the contrast detect to compensate at least. And how do the lens element weights effect all this, and is that different for 35mm sensor such as Sony A7 cams?
AF using old minolta glass on A77II is great.
Wonderful how old lenses get new life on this new camera.
“Lightyears ahead” is a very huge exaggeration. CAF is, in my experience (EM1, XT1, A7ii, A6000), still not at the same level, especially in dimmer light, more so when your subjects moves erratically. Here my D750 is focussing and tracking much more accurately and faster. The NX1 seems to be on a very high level now and in good light provides great results even when compared to a 7dii or d7200, for example. This doesn’t mean that we can’t get on par in future models. I just find the use of words like “runs circles” or “light years ahead”, for both sides similarly, not appropriate.
Which will be ahead where the other can’t follow then? Matching overstatement with a load of pith and wool.
??
Which system is most limited in respect to fastest AF speed in future alone and with accuracy for increasing resolution as a given. ‘ oh ok seeing your other posts i can totally understand what you mean’ ty, yw 🙂
Are there really TWO systems in opposition? Both use phase method and one uses contrast at least for sure so that one can be more accurate in the end unless every point is mirrored of image sensor area just for AF purposes. ‘mirrored’ as in see me? i’m part of the image you cant monitor through the sensor now like how it will be reproduced: exactly. At least, not at the same time…
We use both, DSLR and mirrorless. Exposure preview is not a problem for us, pro DSLRs are very good at metering. I like EVF for in VF image review and magnification. Mirrorless very likely surpass DSLRs even in CAF (however, hybrid systems are thinkable, if weight is not an issue), probably next year already, but not _right now_. My wife needs to earn money with weddings for example, _right now_. As soon as other system do what we need now, we have no problem to switch, after we can use it as reliably as our Nikon at the moment.
Yeah all those flying flower bouquets and of course limiting engagement with photography to shutter and forget, for now, and maybe forever as better photographers with better gear surpass all those low expectations, starting now and using Sony gear. Ok
Learn to shoot and you can stop thinking about hybrids and switches altogether. The real question is, well, are you a politician?
I have the D750 and a6000 and I use those for sports, both focus track really well but I get more keepers from the D750. A6000 loses focus a lot… I wish my D750 could capture 11/12 fps 🙁
Yes, I agree, DSLR is still better for sport.
A77mk2 have very high successful rate at 12fps AF-C.
A6000 also not bad at good lighting, but the successful rate drop significantly, when light level drop.
I am hoping the new A99mk2 can shoot 10~12fps burst as well.
they mentioned battery life in some other intreview. valid enough, DSLR:s don’t have the always on liveview of mirrorless cameras. They will always beat SLT:s and mirrorless with the same battery capacity.
Probably. It is actually funny how the “superiority” of DSLRs is defended nowadays – better grip, better tracking, more “direct” connection with the OVF etc., i.e. overall very minor points.
AF speed of course. It’s just one single point – but it is a VERY big point.
Canon.. hear those footsteps coming up behind you.. Its not Sony.. they already passed you.
It’s a ghost of Minolta 🙂
Now I’m curious who those footsteps belong to….
Nikon, Pentax, Samsung.. everyone who is Hungery vs defensive in product design..
Just because of a camera? Compare lenses and you’ll see that Canon and miles ahead of Sony in the number of quality.
Depends on the Lens.. And you buy lenses once typically and subscribe to camera updates. So if Canon lens owners stop buying bodies every 2-3 years.. OUCH
That’s a lot of smack talking lol. It’ll be interesting to see the real reviews when this camera comes out vs just the praise from Sony employees/paid sponsors. My guess is the camera will live up to the hype based on Sony’s last couple of A7 camera performances.
Are these the SLT cameras we are going to love? Thats a bunch liars nothing else.
Well I think Sony doesn’t need my money then. You know, September is last call .
I’ll only switch, and convert to Sony, take them seriously when they implement the quantum tunneling effect in AF, oh I already have a Sony cam and don’t need to switch, I can just wait with great expectations 😀 Actually, no joke :I quantum chips are already made….how long before quantum sensors that guess the absolute colour of sensor points within the array for most accuracy :I Or all but infinitely scalable images beyond the dimensions of the rays :/
Will we interpret other waves and finer degrees across to imagery we can understand like how some microscopes do now? A to E is four so what will the mount of the future be called :I Quantum mount?
The quantum sensor will take advantage of the holographic nature of the universe (now being described by Juan Maldecena). Because the entire universe exists in a state of superposition/entanglement, an image of any one part will contain all the rest as well. Basically we will only need to actuate the shutter once; we’ll do everything else in post-processing.
They think they know physics being scientists, it validates their politics, how quaint they are in their experience based practices.
4 is Quad, not Quantum.
That self-teaching that you mentioned before, surely isn’t working…
geek trill laughter
the BS sensor went off while reading your very very long winded comments
Not ONE answer from the identitrolls, nor development of idea.
you forgot to take your meds this morning
How does phase detect AF work? why not interpret the image for importance like foreground background and surface and lighting on surface and local colour, so that the actual point is relevant not just from a selection grid. Me? I engage brain and use that with the best focusing manual lens I can find till AF becomes useful or worthwhile compromise to that.
I’ve been trying to tell him/her this for a while now. It’s clearly not getting through
ADMIN! What about this, (from eyes unclouded photography) “On the issue of batteries, although I had it from dependable sources
that Sony was working on a range of higher capacity batteries for 2015,
there are no news about it; hope we’ll see something relevant soon,
though.”
If Sony was listening to consumers they would have put Touch LCD and Touch Shutter in their cameras long time ago – They would also produce more lenses for E mount as well as FE mount – and more under $1000 lenses – so not sure if they are listening that carefully
They don’t , they are only interested in the sound of money they get.
Deliberate hold back. That’s what A7III, A7RIII and A76III are for.
FFS – get an iPad and start working the grandmothers on the Viking cruise tour bus.
I want a super thin Pancake lens for the Full frame A7RII!
Sony FE 35mm F2.8…
Does that not extend beyond the grip…
Must be smaller! It has to fit my handbags.
[troll actived]
You say the same with your d*ck ?
[troll desactived]
You can tell from this comment what their other sponsorship work involves.
Get a bigger handbag. Problem solved.
Sounds like you actually want a DSC-RX1 m2.
That’s too old and not thin enough.
So don’t buy a full frame camera, isn’t it ?
Leica/Minolta 40/2, the tiniest M lens ever.
Zeiss-Contax 45/2.
A pinhole lenscap lens.
those 2.8 zooms could be made shorter in order to stay compact enough. what about a 24-60 2.8? I have the sigma and i never miss the long end. It’s half the weight of the zeiss 24 – 70 2.8. WHat would be the perfect focal lengths for those zooms? 18 – 30mm? 80 – 150mm?
Somebody contact these people and tell them to make 24-70/ 70-200 2.8 without OSS… that’d pretty much get me moved to sony mirrorless. (And no I don’t want A mount.)
And leave the option to stay with that modality in future as you move back, better to have Sony differentiate, especially from those stock in trades, they are heavy and unnecessary and broad brushed over everybody, not like the new super system with absolute choice. (incidentally you might want lens image stabilizing to compliment the long focal lengths properly AND it doesn’t add much cost)
I’m quite surprised they haven’t. They are staple workhorse lenses.
About 70-200 I am not sure if I want OSS or not. 200mm is rather long and it is said IBIS is not as effective at longer ranges (compared to lens-OS).
Can anybody compare a FE70200f4 vs an adapted Canon 70200f4 (old, cheap non OS-version) on an A7ii or A7Rii?
Or adapted SAL70200 or Tamron70200 Macro or any 70200 without OSS?
If Sony listens to its customers, why does the timelapse camera app still not support the silent shutter of the A7S?
Just don’t count on their software team… They provided basic function but that’s all.
4:2:2 10-bit 1080p HD please! This is more important than 4K for many video producers.
A few users have said that the 8 bit 4k on the gh4 and a7s when downsampled to 1080p actually does have a nice 10 bit profile. Can’t vouch for that myself but it does seem to be true. Plus 1080p requires so much pixel binning on large sensors it never truly comes out as 1080–closer to 720 and below. See the ridiculously fuzzy Canon mkiii
Because the number of times you have to turn thumb dial is greater than a shift of the whole range on aperture control on lens, you dont know this? oh dear, haha the preview button, consider why I would even want one and move on.
I have both native AF lenses and adapted ones with aperture rings. I’ve tried, it is not “many times faster”, unless you don’t know how to use your thumb. As to the preview button, my bad in case you are talking about a-mount, otherwise, still no clue what you are on about.
What I cared about was number 6, so he said the lenses the
made so far were pretty much customer driven desires and next would be “upper
end of the lineup” and faster glass. Ok so does “upper” mean more expensive or
longer? I would like to see something like the 70 to 400 or some longer primes
(300, 400, etc) If you are talking about a f/2.8 70-200 how big will that lens
be? 😉
As far as I know short flange distance has an advantage at short focal lengths and fast apertures and compactness so I really hope Sony make some mid range covering lenses exploiting that advantage somehow to extend the range at wide angle but NOT further than 18/20mm, those are specialist and there are plenty of lenses for that, including zooms, what is needed is optimized mid range zoom covering down to only 20mm unlike ANY other lens at 2.8 in any 35mm sensor system while beyond 70mm and to something like 100mm instead, 21-95? ok maybe that would do, but this arbitrary limit without using advantage or matching actual useage….NO WAY. Not now we have the means and the opportunity to differentiate FROM canikon. Ever seen a compact 90mm that is wider than long? would a short 20-100mm 2.8 that was fatter than as long as 70-200mm really be that unbalanced as to incur camera shake and unwieldy, do you ever consider these factors between?
WOT
A zoom lens built like this:
http://www.historic-uk.com/assets/Images/cultureukcornishpasty2.jpg?1390899840
‘A good pasty could survive being dropped down a mine shaft! The crust served as a means of holding the pasty with dirty hands without contaminating the meal. Arsenic commonly accompanies tin within the ore that they were mining so, to avoid arsenic poisoning in particular, it was an essential part of the pasty.’
Tough and weather sealed against poisonous atmosphere 🙂
I will eat this.
I’m a photographer and I rely on this equipment for my whole life.
You’re a psychopath and you rely on a psychiatrist and antidepressants your whole life.
You are a politician and rely on lies and proving them to yourself and worse, others. Btw i already did this before, range finding solves the scrubbing method of focusing which limits acquiring focus distance and a laser could scan from one point somewhere free of the lens view, for it. You get all technical but you are no good with photography…This stuff is elementary.
grandiose delusional disorder. that explains everything you said
Had to google it. It does tick a few checkmarks 🙂
Symptoms:
According to the DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria for delusional disorder, grandiose-type symptoms include grossly exaggerated belief of:
self-worth
power
knowledge
identity
exceptional relationship to a divinity or famous person.
Only 1 question:
Is english your native language?
I am English.
That explains this complicated sentences – too complicated for me (I am not English)
Don’t worry. His first contribution to this thread contained one of the longest English sentences I’ve seen in a very long time. Probably since I last read James Joyce in school. But it has very poor sentence construction that barely parses. I think YOUR English is fine!
Best analogy ever. And pray tell, what do the little tomatoes and onions do ? Ward off evil spirits ? Silence the voices in your head ?
Remind why I use manual focus and choose the best system no matter how excellent the non users of cameras are at defeating themselves.
The onions are good for controlling flair because onions go well with garlic, which is used to defeat vampires, who are afraid of the sun that causes flair. The tomatoes just add a little color.
A Troll. Who cooks it seems. I’m about to make a Prawn Curry myself. I have these awesome tomatoes I picked up so this will not be my usual Cocoanut Milk concoction.
No zooms please, I’m old, they just confuse me.
And you had to live through the 70’s ouch.
https://youtu.be/MbeXzJDYxS0
The 50’s and 60’s too. I’ve seen real pain. 😉
That’s the big mystery – what did he mean by upper end. They keep saying we’ll have 20 lenses by the end of the year – so we’ll know soon enough if they hit their mark.
In some cases, ruin is the word. But this is rare. In the rest of cases it limits what could be an outstanding file quality. It chops up fine structure, it posterises colour and reduces colour count. If you you and your clients are happy with this then why would I care?
You sycophantic and defensive fan boys are not realising that people complaining about this are doing so because they want it to be better. I would love to use this camera but it is flawed at the core and it’s being kept as an amateur camera. I want progress and think Sony is shaking things up.
For Sony to turn around and say the Canon 5DS is crippled is laughable. It may be lacking in one or two areas but it is mature camera that works and the great majority of the industry use it and will continue to do so until Sony fix remedial flaws like this.
Well, it is pretty clear how serious the issue is when there are basically three “examples” floating around and every whiner’s first argument is to start with the name calling.
No, people whine because they like to whine. Where’s that print or downscaled jpeg where the issue ruins a photo? All I see are the few well known examples of 100% overprocessed crops. That is not real output.
Now, there is an issue and I’ve seen it, but it is completely overblown.
Sony + Zeiss, give us a full set of lenses, not 2 in a bunch of different ranges.
I did, you just don’t want to hear it.
on paper, a7rii is a game changer. the best thing about this camera is it’s a wake up call for canon and nikon. they better get off their azzes and get to work to keep up
Yep but they are years late compared to sony… How can they catch up now ? They are in a bad situation and have mostly two choices – going mirrorless or solely focusing on DLSR… hoping Sony does not come up with an new terrific 3rd or 4th generation of A7, which will probably happens.
And DSLR doesn’t evolve anymore…
I hope canikon are doing heavy RD at the moment to catch up sony, because otherwise sony could to eat them up one day…
The best thing is its the top camera and Sony users have it in only second iteration of their new line~ for which I was enamoured with Sony system in the first place.
Brilliant Vlad ! Simply brilliant. Now call 911 because it’s obvious you’ve taken a bad knock on the head.
Although the images I have seen are stunning, I cannot believe the dynamic range on the 5ds/r is no better than the almost 4 year old 5diii. In fact not much better than my 5dii. I shoot architecture for a living. Dark areas (toe board areas under cabinets, etc) are a filthy mess. Even at iso50. Using lights, ambient…does not matter. I spend extra time smoothing out those shadows in post. My RX100 P&S version 1 seems to have better shadow rendering. With todays HD and 4k monitors, dynamic range will be much more of a factor. Canon needs to get on the ball. If the 5ds/r had near the dynamic range of the SONY, Medium format systems would be less desirable. I’m going to get an A7rii and use the lens adaptors for my Canon L lenses for my general Architectural work. If AF is improved…great, however, manual focusing will be much easier with the EVF. If the 5dIV in 2016 comes out a winner, I’ll get one of those. However, I’m keeping a close eye on an announcement for a new A99
there should be two card slots.. again.. should be 2 card slots..
When the a7rII is so much good. The most of the press photos in year 2015 (at the latest 2016) must! be taken with the a7rII. I’m to be wound up to a high pitch.
make some weather sealed 2.8 parfocal zooms please sony/zeiss 🙂
Why parfocal? That said most zooms today actually are parfocal.
Going through lists of fullframe options for parfocal lenses recently I would have said most were vari-focal not parfocal especially when you eliminate the false parfocals. But I don’t know what the true % is.
As to why? Why not? Canon has 2.8 parfocal options so why not compete and perhaps outperform their options? Compete for my lens $’s as well as my camera $’s
Sorry, got this backwards, varifocal and parfocal, something glitched…
Canon 5ds better for sports huh? high resolution bad for sports huh? politics more important than photography huh?
Focus-by-wire is indeed ghastly. Good idea though, have a sort of semi-automatic zone focusing system with a depth of field guide.
No, some lenses have preset focusing inside and perhaps range of focus travel from that point in camera, idk, but this idea is setting focus points and scrolling between them all utilizing the same focus by wire control and then working on AF of particular subject selection thereafter, for instance, the focus by wire could become not aperture control but rather the range allowed or focus depth of AF action to operate upon, inside this zone could then be a number of targets highlighted and still further somewhat outside of it, for honing the AF point of interest rapidly in stages. At this point you could cycle between them again with focus by wire control, presumably in depth away or perhaps just left to right or right to left or whatever you want. You could as another use of the focus by wire, have it set the aperture and visualize the depth of field range on screen somehow or in respect of targets acquired or something too. Once targets drop out of it? they change colour symbol and you know its no good for them, now you can shoot many subjects or non one in particular within a range not just one, my take on AF and its current limitations.
Skip the zooms, drop the 300mm 2.8 and 500mm F4. No, better yet- resurrect the 600mm F4 from the dead. Cash in hand and standing by.
Don’t want focus by wire action as it is? If all manual focus lenses require force to move the elements and by a screw mechanism and sometimes differentially, it will always have some friction which is something you could remove with a ‘symbolic’ yet fully manual control data entry with this focus by wire principle still intact. At each end of a conventional manual focus lens the stops can be useful for quickly getting something like infinity and closest focus, so those physical stops are desirable of course, here we require AF changes too however. Once AF sets a new point aside from physical controls previous setting position, so it follows all we actually need is a still endless rotating ideally damped manual feel control that physically stops as if turned from the new position now manually altered after AF, so the stopping pins could hop into action as the manual focus action nears the end of its travel, and disengage completely when its nowhere near that stop point, if there are lots of pins around the circumference to potentially be set to engage and one or several stops to halt them, and the stops themselves can be shifted a little in preparation at destination to account for separation between each of the pins available, and fixed with not too much risk of damage from pressure applied, you can make it stop and fix that point without wearing out quickly. Feels like the perfect focus action, is the perfect focus action and stops just in time with something relatively strong and at least it stops at all, and always in the right place relative to manual interventions, even after AF, even almost during?
Are you that maniac who kept getting banned a few months back? I forget your original username.
I think so…all his posts are too long to read, I once typed a response two lines long and he gave me two each 20 lines long.
#4 is a joke. If “The customer’s voice is the most important data for me” we would already have A Full-Frame A-Mount, Lossless Raw in new models, and some sort of flash system that is worth using.
They did so much right and yet they still artificially limit the movie recording time to 29 minutes. I’d pay the stupid 5% extra to get unlimited movie recording length, but they don’t even give users the option. I wonder if they still break up movie files into 4GB chunks despite the fact the file system is exFAT. I have the Panasonic FZ1000 and it still does this.
Yes, agree. The 29 minutes limit can be a bit annoying.
That’s EU regulation, you must know that. Google it.
The supid 5% is actually something between 5-12.5%. (And before anybody wants to complain about the EU messing this up. It is highly probable that it is lobby organizations like the MPAA that has caused this from the very start. And yes, though I don’t think this affects my video work, I would not mind seeing this limit being lifted.)
Sony cameras using SDXC (w exFAT) cards can save larger files than 4GB. 30 minutes of XAVC equals about a 10-11GB file.
Who does a single shot of more than 30mins anyway. It would be a torture to direct or the end result would be a torture to watch.
I’m quite curious why it’s so difficult for Sony to get RAW files with lossless compression. 14-bit would also be nice, but I would say the compression issue should have higher priority.
We have to listen to consumers…. Well listen and deploy lossless RAW file format option. Seems like they see this as a minor announce, yet it is one of the last competitive feature limitations that will inform Canon or Nikon users when considering switching, e.g. “Yeah it has all that but it only has 11 bit files…”
Can’t believe they are slow to understand how this will benefit them. This should be a high priority not low.
3) About the RAW compression:
Right now it is the same, yes. We’re still working on it. In the future we may change the software but that’s not completed yet. We have consumers who require 14-bit etc., and we’re considering [how to deal with it].
Please don’t screw these lenses in sake of ‘compactness’
If they’re serious about replacing DSLR/DSLT with E-Mounts, we need full-featured lenses and bigger bodies
>And also aperture. A F2.8 lineup is necessary
Wow. Seems like they indeed heard my voice at least. FE 24-70 f/2.8, FE 70-200 f/2.8 and an A99-sized E body are necessary, if they’re serious about replacing DLSR/DSLT with E-Mounts.
Sony seems to be the only one bringing excitement (again) to serious digital photography
Since Sony still wants to use the same silly NPFW50… (instead of something like better NPFV70)
My message to Sony use a higher capacity battery, you have more room because of the bigger grip!
If not PLEASE 3rd party battery grip manufacturers design a battery tray that accepts higher capacity batteries!
Or invent a battery grip that accept those batteries made to recharge mobile phones, I mean something like this diagram I made just for you:
Sorry I don’t get the picture…

So how come these cameras are advertised as being 14-bit?
On the lenses
Sony 90mm Macro G F2.8 OSS £979
Tamron 90mm F2.8: £300 (cheaper grey import)
Come on seriously!
