(SR5) Zeiss Otus 28mm f/1.4 to be announced on Wednesday October 14 at 11:00 Berlin time.

Zeiss will have two separate announcements next week!

  1. On Monday Oct 12 at 11:00 (Berlin time) they will announce the 21mm f/2.8 Loxia FE lens
  2. On Wednesday Oct 14 at 11:00 (Berlin time) they will announce the new 28mm f/1.4 Otus lens

For sure there will be no new Batis lens next week. They are still lagging behind with the current 25mm and 85mm Batis lens production.

  1. Leonid Enin said to the news piece about the new Loxia:

“mf on 42mpx? quite hard to work with :/ ”

So obviously this thing is DOA for you A7rii users. Bad luck. Certain Canon users may take no notice of mf lenses either.

    1. Haha, sounds like someone who has no idea how to manual focus! I use my 85mm Otus at f/1.4 all the time and practically never miss a shot on the a7rii with its amazing EVF and stabilisation.

Looks very promising, I love 28mm as a prime focal length. Might be preordering this the moment it comes out.

      1. I agree completely with you all and was being sarcastic. I didn’t agree with Leonid Enin in the previous thread and his comment wasn’t even relevant to what i wrote there.

    2. Weird, nobody complained about manual focus on APS-C 24mp sensors with their higher pixel pitch.

These high res FF sensors seem to cause people to spout an awfully large amount of bullsh*t.

        1. It does if the insinuation is that higher megapixel sensors show slight focus errors more readily. That’s what I understood the comment to be implying.

  2. Frankly I am sick to my stomach at this continual announcement of ultra-expensive lenses costing probably $1,200+. What about some lenses in the $400-600 range in a budget range, like Nikon and Canon offer? Sony lured me into their system with great-priced A7 1st-gen bodies, and the very affordable A6000, Nex series. And now it’s turned into a rich man’s system.

    1. If you’re offered a 21mm 1.4 Otus for $1200, I’d say pay up and run before someone realizes their mistake!

          1. Yep probably $1,600. In fact Zeiss could charge whatever they want because these lenses will be sold out everywhere for the next 2 years.

          2. What’s in a name? Let’s just see how it performs optimized for the A7’s. It’s a niche product after all – those are always more expensive than you’d want. That’s just how it is, but then they usually keep their value pretty well too. All mechanical goodness, with just enough electronics to keep the EXIF and activate zoom/peeking etc. 🙂

          3. Biogons are known for horrendous vignetting, f/2.8, yeah, about what you get in the center, you get T8 at the edges lol. Slow Distagons don’t vignette too badly.

    2. Uhm, don’t know if you ever noticed… price has always been a barrier to entry for FF digital, even on the A7. And are you seriously complaining that the latest top of the line full frame exotic Zeiss glass doesn’t come at budget prices?? Time for a reality check I suggest. If you want cheaper glass, stick to crop systems.

    3. It’s not only the cost, it’s the size. I love a fast lens as much as the next guy but the primary reason I moved to Sony was to reduce overall size and weight. I’d be happy with f2.8, Zeiss sharp and light weight.

    4. How did Sony lure you? On launch the two only lenses were the $1000 55/1.8 and the $700 35/2.8. If you want Sony to be like Nikon or Canon, why don’t you just buy Nikon or Canon?

I for one chose Sony because many of the Nikon and Canon primes are cheap plastic garbage. Sony now released one of those for FE (28/2) and it is a lens I will never use. Worst deal ever. I’d rather pay a little more and have decent glass…

      1. You’re forgetting about the 28-70 kit lens. But yes given the prices of the primes, Peetz should have went APS-c.

          1. I wrote the best sony fe lens in the price/value ratio. I didn1t wrote cheapest. I still say the best deal, I have got and for that price no. 1.

      2. Hey now. The FE 28mm is an excellent lens. If you are a DXO guy like most Otus fans are, you would know the Sony FE 28mm is currently ranked as 14th highest lens there. That’s pretty impressive for a 450 dollar lens.

I also heard some talks about updated firmware for the lens that corrects some of the distortion issues it has.

    5. Lol $1,200+ ? You can count on $3000+ for this one.

But i agree there could be a few more ‘regular’ Sony lenses. Though is there not exactly that for this FoV with the FE 28mm F2 !?

Not to mention, one should probably reconsider going FF in the first place if they’re not willing to invest in the higher end spectrum. I’m not surprised that these lenses are all in the 900+ end, since they all need to support 36MP and up .. that is no small feat. On FF that is in particular because: .. corners. You could say the ‘average’ performance of the Zeiss 24-70 shows the difficulty there quite nicely.

    6. This lens has nothing do to with Sony. It’s not even intended for mirrorless cams or Sony A-mount cameras at all.

  3. I’m not going to complain about the price of these Zeiss lense, because look at the price of all the lense they make and you’ll see the FE ones are actually cheap, but I am going to complain that they keep spitting out MF lense. There’s already a million great vintage or other brand MF lense out there and the only AF Zeiss has made they’re “lagging behind” with producing. (also known as never available)

Hopefully all the lense Sony claims they’re releasing via their roadmap are more cost friendly while retaining good IQ, AF, and size. This is where Sigma needs to jump in and make some money and make their Art series available in FE, especially if they made some like the E mount ones that are great performers for the price paid.

    1. So, in exactly what applications do you find you so desperately need AF on your 21mm lenses? Or is it just the case that you can’t be bothered to learn how to use MF which is actually far preferable for those of us who know how to use our cameras?

    2. Loxia seems to be the only full frame lens range that manages to keep size, price and IQ under control. So I’m not going to complain. MF with auto-magnification is not that much more work than moving the focus points to make the AF focus on what you need.

      1. I agree, and only use MF for the type of photography I do (landscape) but I had to keep my 5D Markiii around for a long time because the fact is you’re not going to shoot newborns, kids, or wedding photography efficiently using MF. You’re going to miss a ton of good shots or have shots that aren’t tack sharp and that’s no good for business.

        1. You’ll shoot newborns with ease, they’re not going anywhere until long after they’re not newborns anymore 😉

      2. >size, price

$950 for 6/4 double gauss with no aspherics and no AF? sane price?

        > is not that much more work
        ???
So, what’s the difference, to move focus point or magnification area?
Also AF can focus on face/eyes.

        1. I would say the Loxia prices are high, but not insane. And you have to admit, they are quite good optically.

  4. Good for Sony’s business, especially when the D810 weekend crowd figure-out how difficult it actually is to hit focus on a 28 @ f/1.4 on their OVF’s ground glass!

  5. I don’t recall stating I needed it on a 21mm, unless you see something I don’t in what I typed. It was a general statement about making nothing but high priced MF lense. I’m glad to see you’re a big boy who knows how to use your focus ring. I applaud you! I’m also impressed you know how everyone else shoots, including me. I’m confused though on how I’m using my large collection of m42, MD, and FD mount lense on my camera since I can’t be bothered to to learn the preferred way. Even more confusing is why all the professionals I know and have assisted still use the inferior method when making tens of thousands of dollars when clearly if you know how to use your camera, you use MF, plus it’s the number one complaint from pros when reviewing Sony cameras- AF speed/accuracy. . . . . MF is great, I use it all the time, I’m cool and a winner just like you, but you’re going to miss a ton of great key shots when shooting professionally (wedding, kids, model, sports, etc).

    1. You complained that Zeiss is releasing a 21mm FE lens that is MF only. Why would you post complaining about MF in response to the release of a 21mm lens unless you’re referring to that lens? If you aren’t referring to the 21mm Loxia, what are you whinging about and why are you doing it here? Otherwise, you’re saying that you’ve missed lots of shots with your 21mm’s because they’re manual focus?

  6. Really? Upon rereading Dave B’s comment it does seem that he didn’t mention any particular one of the lenses, but since he was complaining about the price I just assumed it was about the Otus, it was the other people who interpreted Dave’s comment wrong IMO.

    1. Then perhaps you need to read it again, because your assumption was obviously wrong. He starts talking about FE lenses being cheap, then starts complaining about MF lenses, then talks about Sony and Sigma’s lineups in FE. Unless you live in some other dimension, Zeiss Otus lenses are SLR lenses only. If he’s talking about FE lenses throughout, then where exactly do you think the Otus comes in…?

  7. I can nail focus with the Otus 85mm and APO 135mm no problem. In fact, I actually prefer MF and OVF since I’m so used to it. The Otus lenses are a pleasure to use with their long focus, silky smooth focus throws
