Finally I have a clue about the exact announcement time. The A77M2 and RX100M3 will be announced on May 1 at 10 am London time. In other time zones this will be:
– 2am (02:00) San Francisco
– 5am (05:00) New York time
– 10 am (10:00) London time
– 11 am (11:00) Berlin time
– 8 pm (20:00) Tokyo time

The most important correction I have to make is quite surprising because one of my trusted sources corrected the RX100M3 info. It doesn’t have the Sony patented 28-100mm f/1.8-2.8 lens! The RX100M3 has a new 24-70mm f/1.8-2.8 lens! Sony decided to take away some mm at the tele end in favour of a much more wide angle lens. I am a bit surprised I was wrong on this because two trusted sources told me it was a 28-100mm lenses. I actually suspect Sony itself shared wrong specs without knowing it. Possible seen that they often copy and past from previous generation cameras 🙂  One more thing: It’s confirmed the new RX has a builtin EVF!

Be sure to be online on may 1 at SAR to follow the event live!

Reminder A77MII specs:
new 24 MP Sensor
79 af points, 15 cross points
very Fast Tracking performance
12fps up to 60 Frames/ 25 frames RAW & JPG, RAW 26 frames
Low light AF, f/2.8 vertical line sensor, new algorithm

    1. remember, we are talking about a ultra compact 1.0 Type Sensor Camera that fits your pockets. The rest of compact cameras with comparable size have either a smaller sensor or a bigger lens.

    2. Uh, yeah… so all those beloved 24-70 zooms that people pay high prices for are not good ranges? I’ll take 24-70 over 28-100. 24-85 would’ve been perfect but 24-70 is just fine.

  1. I like the decision to go with a winder lens, this news definitely made me interested. The next question is whether it will come with an improved sensor for low-light.

      1. probably full sensor readout, just like on the rx10. Post any specs you have, as soon as you have them (especially about the flippiness of the lcd 🙂 )

  2. That is a major upgrade….. It basically makes it superior to the RX10 in a lot of ways — smaller, and with a wider aperture at wide angle. Giving up the telephoto reach of 70-200. I wonder what the price will be…. If priced the same as the RX100m2 upon introduction, it’s quite a camera. But I wouldn’t be surprised if they price it even higher

  3. Some people here really wanted 24-70mm (2.9x zoom). I expected the original 28-100 (10-37mm) or 24-85mm 3.5x zoom. That’s probably to make F2.8 possible on the long end. Not sure whether I’m buying it now or not.

          1. And so?
            I know it, thank you.
I replied to the user laughing for the “short” tele-zoom difference…

  4. That’s simple sheer perfection !
My only gripe with the RX100M3 was that it would start at 27-28mm…

    but 24 is simply perfect.
A bit less zoom is no problem really because we still have IZ, digital zoom etc up to
    about 100-140 mm.
If there is an builtin EVF it will make my perfect camera.
I waited till now for a new compact because the Sony RX10 proved quite big (for my taste anyway) and this new camera allows me to finally retire my Leica D-LUX4 after more than 3 years of perfect service. The only thing that camera lacked was a better sensor and EVF.
    This is finally it !

    1. Yes! This is absolutely a recepie for success.

If it has tiltable screen and similar AF-performance as the A6000 and OSS, this would be really, really awesome! Even if not, this would be a great camera.

I wonder how big this lens will be though. I fear that they have prioritized to make it as small as possible and compromized with the optical quality so it shows a large amount of distorsion that they then “fix” electronically afterwards. This could ruin the details in the corners.

Somehow Sony manages to make an almost perfect camera, but then there is some little thing that is very negative and disqualifies it. Will be interesting to see this new RX.

  5. Any chance it will come up with a 180 degree flip up monitor? But flip up mon seems impossible if there is an evf

      1. The last 30mm is not as much as it sounds, just crop some megapixels and you have it. Nothing can replace a wider angle lens though!

          1. only if it were a SLR lens. RX series don’t have either mirror or focal plane shutter, which makes wideangles much space-cheaper. And now they have BSI sensor, which fixed problems with angular response.

          2. We are still talkng about extreme wide angle though. Just compare the 7-14 Panasonic to the 9-18 Olympus. The difference in FOV between 24 and 28mm is pretty big, already an achievement. While the 30mm lost at the tele end can be easily won back with some cropping, it is a very high resolution sensor.

  6. any word on the a mount lens. In an earlier release you mentioned a slightly updated SAL16-50 was in the works but I haven’t seen in your last few posts.

  7. Rx100mk3 now miss only the codec XAVC-S at high bit rate … If there would be perfection.

But we know that both are ineerirà again AVCHD. So the camera will remain unsold for me cheerfully on the shelf 🙂

    1. Yeah, there are like a lot of other brands filling our options of high bitrate video codes in pocket able cameras already.

Just give me full sensor readout like my RX10 and I’m happy.

      1. But the video is a old codec AVCHD with moire and block
For 2014 S-Log and XAVC-S in RX100mk3 is ESSENTIAL for sold-out this camera

        1. Sorry but I couldn’t care less about the video codec. Don’t think many other would either. I don’t have a rx100 but would consider this for travel.

          1. Sorry but I couldn’t care more about the video codec. I do think many other care too.

          2. Sorry but I couldn’t care more about the video codec. I do think many other care too.

  8. Hopefully the built-in optical stabilizer is a little better, not that great on the two original RX100

    1. Well the new lens would indicates that they have to make a different one for this, so there’s a better chance of getting better stabilization than when the mk2 came out with the same optics.

  9. After A6000, one more translucent camera is actually a step back, rather than forward, in Sony’s product line.

    1. Unless they use the mirror not for AF but for OVF. Even more, if it flips out during exposure and VF is hybrid EVF/OVF (like on Fuji X100 etc), the camera would be epic.

  10. great 24mm is better than 28mm

and I really care for one thing on RX100m3 (it’s the same reason I didn’t buy the RX100m2 for) ,it’s the playmemories camera apps 🙂 hopefully it will be there

  11. This camera will sold-out
only if sony will be decided to include the codec XAVC-S and S-Log color profile.
Only then sony beat the competition and earn a lot but a lot!
And all perfect just missing a quick touch to the firmware for the XAVC and we are riding;)

    1. Only if Sony could include a Bitcoin mining machine in it as well …
some people don’t know where to stop

      1. Say what you will but this codec is essential for sony itself. Infuse is nothing more than adding a firmware nothing more

        1. I film my kid, but he doesn’t now sh*t about XAVC.
Also, good design means the cpu is optimized and there is absolutely no spare cpu cycles for a fancy codec.

        2. So why don’t you write the updated firmware and make it available to the community if it’s so easy? Meant to be a rhetorical question, you obviously don’t know what you’re talking about. Troll on!

    2. I don’t think including a high end codec will change sales for this one way or another at all. Considering that codec is a defining feature in the a7s, I don’t see Sony putting it in an all-in-one compact consumer camera.

      1. other than that , (and it’s 26mm missing since the lens start at 24mm 🙂 )
like hotshoe or built in flash (you know because it’s hard to fit viewfinder with all of that )

  12. Wondering! What panasonic would bring in their famous LX the successor of lx7 to make one overide this one! in terms of specs.

  13. I prefer 28-100 only because I naturally tend to mentally frame tighter shots, but f/2.8 or faster at 50mm would sure be nice….

    1. costs over 2500$ for sure and not have 4k internal recording. People buy GH4 not A7S… GH4 is now sold-out in many stores. The answer of sony is in this A7II and RX100MK3 witk s-log and 4k XAVC

      1. Please stop the f’ing whining about 4k. Its a quantum leap in high iso shooting and all you as swipes do is cry about it. Go buy go pro and stfu, we’ll be laughing at you in the evening.

      2. Some would prefer an image sensor larger than that found on a smart phone, others like you apparently not.

      1. Yep, that’s about 1.5 stops. A very noteworthy improvement for a telephoto end, which absolutely requires higher shutter speeds.
I’d prefer a 28-100, but 24-70 isn’t bad either. That means, that at the wide end, it will have the same capabilities (except for shallow DOF) as my A65 with SAL1650, and at the telephoto end, it will be 1 stop slower.
I’d call it a win-win in my book.

        1. Wrong. The sensor/lens combo is what determines DOF. If you put a 70mm 2.8 lens on an APS-C sensor, versus the same lens on a 1″ sensor (or smaller) you get noticeably more shallow DOF on the APS-C sensor.

          1. Wrong, DoF is a property of the lens, determined by FL, aperture and subject distance. Put the same lens on two cameras with different sensor sizes, and the DoF is exactly the same on both.
However, the angle of view will be different, and if you want the same angle of view, then you have to change the focal length by zooming. Since DoF is dependent on FL, you change the DoF in the process.

So, DoF does not change with sensor size, but you have to change it by changing FL, if you want to keep the AoV the same.

          2. you’re both right. it’s the same thing. “Here’s your sign” is right since subject distance will change dramtically in his/her example.

          3. “Here’s your sign” is using the same lens with different sensors. focal length isn’t changed. FOV is.

          4. 🙂 I think instead of writing all that, its much easier to say that DOF is dependent on Arpeture and AOV, with larger sensor having a shallower DOF at the same AOV as a smaller sensor.

          5. And you must be blind… Cause I never said anywhere that a 1″ sensor will have a shallower DOF. I said that “That means, that at the wide end, it will have the same capabilities (except for shallow DOF) as my A65 with SAL1650”. So that says that my A65 will be shallower at the wide end, not the other way around…

          6. And at Telephoto End, both lenses are 70mm equivalent, at 2.8 Fstop, so that means that at the telephoto end A65 will also be shallower. RX100m3 will be 1 stop slower because of ISO capabilities, not the lens…
Next time read the entire thing.

          7. With your comment I got confused in my own.
so, try #2 for the wide end.
What I meant to say is, that at 1.8/24 equiv, RX100 will have the same DOF as my A65 at 2.8/24 equiv (which is 16mm)

  14. So Sony is leaving the 24-105mm f/2-f/2.8 equivalent lens for the RX100 M4. So you can shell out another $1000.00.

  15. 24-70mm is pretty sweet. Probably just a hair short to proper portrait FL but it should be workable. Hopefully they include built in ND from RX10 as well

  16. Makes sense, those who want 28-100 still have RX100M2. Although 70mm is too short for travel camera. They will need seamless digital zoom to compensate. With 1″ 20mpix and f/2.8, you can do decent up to 1.4x, and even 2x is going to reasonable in good light.

  17. I’m OK with 24-70. That would be an upgrade for me.
    Sensor? any news?
Video specs? maybe 1080p with an ALL Intra codec?

    1. probably not with the evf 🙁 too bad, for a pocket cam the selfie lcd would be a better way, evf takes up too much space and I think doesn’t really allow a nex-3n like display 🙁 I would be pretty sad about this. This should be a great travel/party/take everywhere camera, and a selfie lcd on it would makes more sense

  18. IMHO this MIGHT BE the perfect travel cam.
The RX10 may have more reach, but the size of this camera sure makes it
perfect for everything that does not require a long zoom range.
20MP allows for quite some cropping anyway.

  19. Sorry to say admin, but your page lost its value, since it is not a rumor site anymore. Not your fault though, looks like Sony finally closed leak sources.

    1. rumors is still on the website names

and all the info you read before announcement about A77ii and RX100m3 are rumors/leaks

      1. The a77ii leaks have been minimal compared to the a7/r leaks (even the sensor res seems to be uncertain, reading between the lines). I don’t blame Andrea, but it’s a good bet that Sony has done something to cut down on the number of leaks… Which is a shame, given the interest they generate.

  20. Dear Andrea,
    one thing i don’t understand:
Why is there a 1-5 rumor scale if there are never 1 or 2 rumors?

You argumented with liability, but i think that should be not your “problem” but the problem of the people who judge your liability by whether the SR1-3 rumors become true.

Please share SR1 to SR3 rumors again.

  21. I really wonder how and if Panasonic and Leica are going to respond to this awesome entry.
Their LX7/D-LUX has that incredible F1.4- lens 24-90 mm, but with this BSI 1″ sensor Sony crushes even those camera’s.
My F2 Leica was with 1/1.6 sensor was already great, but this !
    I wonder … can Pana/Leica make their lenses F1.0 🙂 ?

  22. Now SAR is saying it has a built-in EVF (NOT Explicitly a pop-up) Maybe they could add a pop-up but I don’t see how? I’m curious how this will be implemented.

The current snap-on EVF is very nice and provides the ability to turn the EVF up to 90 degrees to the camera, a sometime useful feature.

    1. And also with a built in EVF the costs go higher, it won’t be so compact, and we get no 180° flip up lcd 🙁

      1. I discovered that if you are trying to see over a crowd to photograph something, you can turn the camera upside down, hold the camera up over your head, then aim the camera using the display screen. The RX100 knows it was upside down and corrects the image for you! You gotta try this to understand what I mean.

  23. 70mm? WAAAAAHHHHHH, WAAAAAAHHHHHHH !!!!!!!!!!!

Nobody will buy it, there are already PLENTY of options at that wide angle.

What everybody really wants is 2000mm. This lens is useless.

And 20mp? Laughable! We already have 36mp, nobody will buy this piece of junk. What everybody really wants is 54mp, preferably 100+

My name is Barry, and I’m a numeroholic.

    1. Admin,
This user is pretending to be me. I dont appreciate people impersonating me.
I will now make a tpyo. I will now start a new line without leaving a blank line.
Im now typing on the new line. Have I said 54 megapixels yet?
Anyway, you know what they say about insanity. It’s all about doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
It’s all about doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

      1. Dave,
I do not appreciate that. These fans are malicious. I will make another tpyo now.
Thanks for stoppin’ in, have a nice day. Remember, pixel power!

  24. Perfect. Unfortunately, I had to sell my RX100 due to the bad Sony colors and I am now happily using a Canon EOS M – with its drawbacks regarding focus. However, it’s amazing how fast Sony innovates, great products containing exactly what customers want, unlike Canon. I may re-consider the RX100 M3 but I suppose there is no chance for Sony to suddenly improve its color filters and algorithms.

      1. I think he wants to start up a fight, like others that go: “How crappy XZY is, I am now using ABC and its really good.” He just sweetens it up with “I may reconsider the RX100 M3 but…”

    1. it’s not bad or good , it’s just different and is suited for some people and not suited for other people .

and almost on most cameras with pro control you can change a lot of things to make any camera give you the look you want

    2. “Bad Sony colors?”

That’s a feature, not a bug. The Sony/Minolta/Sony Zeiss color rendering is bright & punchy versus the muted, flat Canon color characteristics.

      1. The EOS M has the same image quality as any Canon APS-C DSLR, while being very compact. I bought it for the Canon colors and for the LACK of EVF, flash and other things that could make the camera bigger. It’s a great camera for the ones taking pictures, it’s a lousy camera for the forum junkies 🙂

        1. Was just joking, because you said the Sony colors are bad 🙂 though I do think that for the money it is not very well featured. If only Canon had the presence of mind to use the G10 body design for the M…

  25. Isn’t it amazing.
About 8 years ago we had the first ‘affordable’ Canon DSLR at 1000 USD. With a “mother of all lenses”: 24-70 mm on it … heaven @ around 2000 USD.
May 1 2014, if things work out as expected we will have the same capability and IQ in a body+lens of 1/3 the price, 1/4 the size and 1/5 the weight.
True digital revolution … Yes, We Can !

  26. This is it! Will this be the bomb that finally wakes CanNikon from their slumber? Ah, I just remembered, the RX1 didnt wake them, so this will probably not wake them.. again.. Thank God for Sony!

    1. canon and nikon have their consumer that are happy with their product , they don’t have to be like sony .
and anyway different choices are a good thing for market and consumer

    2. Apparently Nikon has finally woke up and will be introducing the P8000 in May. It has a 1″ sensor with fast AF like the Nikon 1 and a fixed 24-120mm f2-f3 lens. But it will be larger than the RX100M3. Nice to finally see some competition for the RX100.

  27. What are these numbers that keep being posted? What actually appears on the front of the lens? On the RX100 it is F1.8-4.9 10.4-37.1 If posting the FF equivilent that means nothing to me.

      1. Only if you’re used using a FF camera. I am not. I am using the RX100 and I know what the FOV is for the 10.4 or 37.1 end is. There is utterly no use in going for some magic equivalence number. The aperture is f/1.8 to f/4.9 and this means nothing if you translate the focal length to something else.

        1. Hey, no need to be upset about it. Just ask a polite question and you will have your answer. FF eq. is well spread an wideley used. If you don’t like it stay off the internet. Now, this is how you do it: 24/2.7=8.88 and 70/2.7=25.95. Hence, the actual focal lengths are close to 9-26mm. The big deal here is the aperture. This lens is bright! At the far end it’s many times brighter/faster than the rx100.

          1. a clarification: the “far end” of the new lens is not as “far away” as the rx100, but you get the idea. it’s still bright.

          2. Ha, if you don’t like people who don’t know everything in the universe like you then it’s you who should stay of the internet. You say “at the far end it’s many times brighter,” but I think you meant one times, or one stop.

          3. listen it’s perfectly allright to be a complete noob, we all are every now and then. I got the impression you were upset about the FF eq. lingo, that’s all. and there is no need, really, since all of the internet, and every camera store I know of uses it one way or the other. And right, the rx100 is actually brighter than I thought, i seemed to remeber it going to f6.3 at the far end, but i was wrong.

          4. The FF equivalency is there to be able to compare cameras across different sensor sizes. These values dictate angle of view for framing purposes. Even smartphones list FF equivalency values. I understand your frustration. I’ve been there myself and never used a FF camera. But once you start to use FF equivalency values. It becomes very easy to compare between brands, lens types, etc etc.
With your logic, good luck comparing to Canon 1Gx

          5. Actually, that’s what you don’t seem to get:

            IT IS.

Knowing the actual focal length is useless when comparing two non FF cameras, unless you are lucky and they happen to share the exact same sensor size. That is so rarely the case, that we (present day photographers, both on AND off the Internet) have resorted to a generally agreed upon “standard”.

          6. You really don’t get this. There are three RX100 models that share the same sensor size. If an owner is making a comparison then that is far more useful to state the real focal lengths not made up ones.

          7. So for the purpose of discussing these 3 (potentially 4) cameras, we should throw out a decade plus of convention that is universally understood, and that enables ALL camera owners to make comparisons on common ground.

Everything should refer to real, physical properties only, even if that relegates you to a bubble, or means an order of magnitude more work and calculations the minute you chose to compare, say, the RX100M3 to the LX-7 and G1XM2.

            NOW I get it. Thanks.

        2. As you probably know, the FF translation has become kind of a standard. It’s so long since I was shooting film, and since then I’ve mostly used c-crop cameras, so it’s the c-crop that feels native to me. However, I know it’s just to dive FF numbers by 1.5 to get what I “understand”. Similarly micro 4/3 shooters will divide by 2. It’s kind of like if I tell you a price in Norwegian kroner you’ll probably need to look up the value of Norwegian kroner, but if I convert the price to US$ you will likely have an idea of the price even if your native currency is something else.

    1. since there are a lot of cameras with diffrent sensor size the FF equivalent give you a consistent FOV number to compare without needing to do the math of the crop factor .

overall it’s a good thing , and you always can didvide the FF eq by the crop factor to get the original lens mm

        1. sure thing 🙂
for rx100 (and other 1 inch sensor camera) the crop factor is 2.7x

so when you have FF eq number and you want to get the lens real mm you just divide by 2.7

for example let’s calculate rx100m3 real lens mm
first on the wide it 24mm eq , so 24/2.7= 8.89mm
on the tele it is 70mm eq , so 70/2.7=25.93

then the real rx100m3 lens mm is 8.9-25.9mm (P.S based on the number on this rumor which could be wrong )

          1. So the difference at the long end is about F2.8 vs F4 ? Edited (had wide instead of long)

          2. I read some where that rx100 lens on the same wide end as rx100m3 is f3.2 (on the 70mm or 25.9mm ) and now it’s f2.8

            |||||| correction , it’s f4 at 70mm . thanks to orange for the correction ||||||||

          3. Well if the RX100 is 28-100 as people are saying then 100 is 3.5 times 28 so 70 would be 2.5 times and when I view 2.5 times magnification on my RX100 the screen says it is at F4

          4. you are correct about f4 (sorry I didn’t double check )

and since mark 3 lens is wider it’s 2.9 times zoom

          5. At the wide end it is the same 1.8 vs 1.8. At the Telephoto end its exactly 2.8 vs 4, which is 1 stop.

        2. Things everyone else but you seems to already know:

          1) We tend to speak in terms of 35mm/FF equivalents when we talk about focal length, to simplify things (like comparing and visualizing).

          2) The previous iterations of the RX100 have a 28-100mm equiv. lens, in terms of focal length.

          3) The RX100 has a 1″-type sensor, and it’s “crop factor” is 2.7.

          1. It really isn’t simpler to make a comparison of one RX100 to another by using a 35mm camera I have never used (and many owners will not have used). But thanks for the reply. I promise to be as patronising in my answers as I can.

          2. I’m afraid you are arguing against years (more than a decade, now) of established discussion on digital cameras with sensors of varying sizes – and lenses as well. You are also arguing with the camera itself, which (in stepped zoom mode) reports the 35mm focal length equivalents. I’m fairly certain your exif also reports said equivalent as well – as my NEX-6 does:

Focal length : 30.0 mm (35 mm equivalent: 45.0 mm)

Sony’s other 1″ camera, the RX10, has 35mm equiv markings on the barrel. I’m not sure what you imagine is simpler than this, but I’m relatively certain it needn’t involve being intentionally obtuse and going against the grain of established conventions.

  28. About the different rumors : 24-70 or 28-100, you know the trick : saying different things to different people, and waiting to see which information leaks, in order to identify who talked too much…

  29. Whew I am really happy to hear this. I was KICKING myself for buying an M2 this weekend then learning that the M3 is just around the corner. Now it looks like the M3 is not really a big upgrade over the M2 given the shorter lens range. That 2.8 doesn’t seem as impressive considering it’s at 70mm. If they managed 1.8-2.8 from 28-100 I would’ve returned the M2 I just bought and held off for the M3. As it stands now I feel like I have the better camera for my needs.

Personally I’d much rather have the extra 30 on the long end than an extra 4 on the wide.

    1. What is the RX100ii at 70mm? I’m guessing within the same range, the M3 will be faster at every focal length.

        1. As Stan points out, f/4. Once this thing is out, we will see for sure if it’s faster through their shared range. I would guess that is the case, though.

    2. The other thing is, You can easily crop/digital zoom to get that reach. You can’t make a wider image (well, I suppose you COULD stitch/pano).

  30. This is just bad news to me, if true. Even more reason to have 2 versions of RX100 – each with different lens types. I’d choose slower + more/longer zoom range.

      1. Yeah and who wants a mk2 when the 3 is out? Anyway it would be a good way for them to measure demand too – see which lens version sells better.

        1. “Yeah and who wants a mk2 when the 3 is out?”

You do. Or are you only interesting in having the latest gadget and not the correct lens on it that you want?

          1. I want both, just as those that prefer a wider, faster range get with the Mk3. My point is more choice would be better…why not? If mk3 really is a 24-70 lens then the already low-versatility rx100 becomes even less so and my argument gets stronger.

  31. Awesome. Really hoping this camera has XAVCs and SLOG2. No longer buying a camera unless there is legitimate improvement in the video capabilities, not some silly marginal alleged improvement that most people can’t see unless looking at the image at 100%. A better codec and dramatically more dynamic range would represent real improvement.

  32. I think I’ll be selling my RX100Mk2. Nah, it’s still a great camera. I do want the Mark III though. Sony is doing wonders in the RX line.

  33. Its a BIG mistake if the lens stops at 70mm. Especially for what they are probably going to charge for the camera.

  34. Seems like a worthy upgrade to my RX100. Faster lens. Wider angle. Wifi. EVF. Tilt LCD. A bit of crop/digital zoom for tele.

A77II I’m very curious about. Will I be able to shoot videos with audio levels? Without the extra crop? Will settings work in different modes? A77 was a very good camera with bugs. Same thing with bugs fixed… might be worth an upgrade. A bit more shooting speed and DR? Not so much.

    1. Does the current a77 not show audio levels? The a99 does (they can be adjusted with the silent wheel while recording), I’d be surprised if the a77II does not.

        1. “I’ll be surprised if the a77II does not.” Sony has since learned something and fixed it in the a99, so…we’ll see soon enough.

  35. So it’s 11 p.m. on the east coast, 6 hours from a really big launch and there isn’t a leaked photo? even some grainy fuzzy shot taken by a cell phone to show that stuff actually is coming, I’m going to sleep

    1. If its on May 1st, as Admin says, then its in 29 hours, not 5… Today is still 29th in USA, 30th morning in London. Announcement is on May 1st, 10am London time

  36. I’m very glad to see Sony add 24mm – the FoV just has so much more impact than 28mm. More that you might think, given the difference is only 4mm.

And I don’t mind loosing 30mm from the far end. Again, despite the number (30), it’s far *less* significant than you might think.

For example, set your RX100 to the 100mm FoV. Look at what is in the frame. Now, set the RX100 to 70mm. Take 3 large steps forward, and look what is in the frame.

    1. True, Wide angle is better for this awesome camera to become potential landscape camera, which I wanted to be on my RX100M2. for 100mm? no problem.. just shoot 70mm @ 2.8 which is better and then crop abit. (only slight quality lose and more DOF)

    2. Yeah, the 4mm make a big difference. Can’t imagine my RX10 starting at 28mm, too restrictive in tight spaces.

  37. I dont know but the GX1 Mk II has a sensor that is 2x the area of 1″ sensors (1 stop), 24-120mm equiv. with an actual f/2-3.9…

So that’s like having f/1.4-2.8 on a rx100 series with the lens going from 24-120 instead of 70.

Any reasons why the rx100 iii is worth this much excitement over the gx1 mk ii?

    1. The Sony is considerably smaller , and though the Canon sensor is larger it is of an older design with almost 2 stops poorer DR and only a third of a stop better high ISO. The equivalence argument while true ,only works if the larger sensor has a large enough advantage at high ISO to allow for the use of increased high ISO to for example maintain a shutterspeed etc.

    2. moreover, RX100 iii is supposed to have builtin EVF, whereas for G1X II they have additional one which is looks like tumor and significantly reduces its pocketability.

  38. Admin,

You mentioned below that you have the full specs. That was 12 hours ago. Why don’t you just post it?

    1. WTF? yeah, spill the beans man. You mean we’ve been sitting waiting for news and you know stuff?

  39. 24mm is a blessing. 28 at times can be a bit tight. Sure its only 4mm but that is a good starting point for a point and shoot. Wonder how much it will cost. The M1 was 650, the M2 was 750. Hopefully this one is not 800+ but it just might be….
