(SR5) Hot! Voigtlander will announce new FE lenses at 14:00 London time!

[shoplink 41206 ebay]index[/shoplink]
Image on top shows a current [shoplink 41206 ebay]M-mount Skopar lens[/shoplink]. Something similar in size could be announced today.

UPDATE: It’s now official! Read about the new lenses here on SAR.

Today Voigtlander will announce a brand new line of native Full Frame E-mount lenses! Announcement is expected to happen at 14:00 London time (9am in New York). What I know so far is:

  1. They will launch three Full Frame E-mount lenses
  2. Those are manual focusing lenses
  3. Those lenses are “compact” in terms of size compared to current FE lenses. Don’t know if they are as compact as the current [shoplink 41206 ebay]Skopar lens line (here on eBay)[/shoplink]. I certainly would like it if it would be so!

This is really exciting! At last some cheaper good quality FE lenses are coming! Stay tuned on SAR! I will live blog all the info about the announcement!

Reminder: On Monday Zeiss will announce the FE Loxia 21mm f/2.8 lens. And in two weeks Sony will unveil their new FE lenses and update FE lens roadmap!

  1. Exciting! However, if these are just higher priced converted M-mount models, I’d rather stick with the flexibility of the close focus adapter and a more universal mount.

    1. Well, yes, but with a 10mm wide f. 5.6 lens you will hardly have any OOF at all. I.e. everything is always in focus. I would be more concerned if the lenses were tele-lenses, but this wide, no.

  2. Voigtländer currently has three VM lenses that were recently updated to work better on E-mount cameras (and one is specifically E-mount only):

    – 15mm f/4.5
    – 35mm f/1.7
    – 40mm f/2.8

If Voigtländer were to release E-mount versions of these with electronic coupling, I’d buy all three.

    1. as glowinthedark said it gives proper EXIF data but it also engages AF magnification when you turn the focus ring and it allows you to change aperture directly from the body – if implemented.

    2. “While the 12 mm and 15 mm lenses are already avaibale with a VM-Mount the 10 mm focal length is completely new. As these extreme wide lenses are challenging a fast and smooth commuication between lens, camera and photographer, which is extremely important.

If enabled the camera changes automatically in magnifying mode during focusing which allows hightest accurancy. All lens-relevant data such as focal length, aperture and focal distance are transmitted to the camera. This data is shown in the view finder/display and used for metering and image stabilization.”

  3. But 35mm and 40mm are way too close ! Who needs both those focals ? They should rather be spaced to form the holy trilogy, like 28mm, 45 or 50mm and 90mm. With the standard lens slightly faster (F2)

  4. If they simply change the mount from M mount lenses and leave the optics largely untouched then I see no point, all lenses would be ~1cm longer, might as well keep one M-E adapter and use multiple ~1cm shorter M mount lenses.

    1. I feel that it’s the case, because they never did electronic lenses for m43 so I really doubt that they would start now.

  5. “Voigtlander will announce new FE lenses at 14:00 London time!”

Come on, someone push that Big Ben clock an hour or two ahead now.

  6. It would be insane if Voigtlander revive the legend – 125/2.5 Macro APO-Lanthar, I don’t care if it is radioactive.

Sony needs exactly tele lenses, so a 125mm it would make a lot of sense.

    1. It wouldn’t make sense to choose to revive it on this mount. Besides there are tons of radioactive lenses that aren’t good, I don’t think that’s the reason.

      1. I said that I’d like to see it for its APO performance and despite it being radioactive. Not that I like it for being radioactive.

    2. Revival of a lens that is mediocre at best by todays standards, like Meyer Optik did with the Trioplan 100 for $1400? No thanks.

Or do you get high from radioactivity? Then I would understand.

      1. Mediocre?
Maybe this is why today it is difficult to find it below $2,200 second hand on ebay, being priced $600-700 while in production.
Perhaps you can advise on an APO f2.5 lens in this focal range?

        1. What I have seen (IQ wise) is mediocre. Mediocre at best. It’s a bright lens. It’s focal length is odd. So what? It’s unique? Yeah, great! Let the boys pay $2,200. I just don’t get it. So, I expressed my astonishment. Give me a sane reason, and I’ll be thankful to understand that mystery.

          1. I have seen enough images and comparisons to deem it better than the Zeiss 100mm F2, which is hardly mediocre.

        2. BTW: APO says, Chromatic aberration is well corrected. APO does not automatically mean the lens is great.

          1. No, it is good. But it doesn’t make this anything special by todays standards. The Nikkor AiS 105/2.5 is a great lens, no APO, but all aberrations are decently corrected. It was a dream lens back in the film days, but by todays standards in mediocre-good.

I guess the price is high because it is a rare lens. The rest is glorification. Same is true for many old Leica lenses. People say , Leica renderingh, Leica glow, “Mojo” or whatever BS, to poor – mediocre IQ (by todays standards) and pay $1.500 for a Summilux 35 from the fifties (terrible IQ, I had it once).

          2. OK, mediocre was not the right term to justify the lens. It is not comparable to a Trioplan. I have to take it back. What I was trying to say is, that it is nothing special anymore.

The photozone test is from 2007 made on low resolution sensors of that time. Tests made on a APS-C EOS 350D. Look at the MTF50 values. They are even across the frame but poor by todays standards. Compare it with todays photozone tests. So, I’m not sure if the lens would be look flawless on todays cameras.

Again what I have seen in real photos is good (mediocre was wrong), but nothing that couldn’t be done with other lenses.

        3. BTW 2: Do you really experienced an advantage of f2.5 over f2.8 in real world usage? It’s 1/3 stop faster, right?

    1. According to the tradition of Voigtländer the first three lenses of this new lines are covering an extreme wide angle range and are perfect for landscape and architecture photographers:

      • 10 mm F 5,6 Hyper-Wide-Heliar

      • 12 mm F 5,6 Ultra-Wide-Heliar

      • 15 mm F 4,5 Super-Wide-Heliar

        1. 6 mm Hyper-Ultra-Super-Wide-Heliar

The problem is, you always have the shutter release button in the frame.

    2. Seems as if Voigtlander is not allowed to mess with the focal lengths from Sony and Zeiss. I was hoping for a bit more standard focal lengths. A 28 seems possible and the 75 is not occupied by Sony/Zeiss either. This is a value boost for the A7 line.

    3. Wow great news, I don’t like UWA but the important thing here is about the electronic communication! Finally someone that understand the Loxias appeal.

  7. “Voigtlander will announce new FE lenses at 14:00 London time!”

What Voigtlander? There is no Voigtlander for 50 years!

    Maybe you mean Cosina?

    1. Who cares. What counts are the lenses. Voigtlander is printed on the barrels, so the easiest thing is to call them Voigtlander’s.

Feel free to call them Cosina’s, but no one will know what the h*ll are you talking about. My suggestion in order to satisfy yourself and get understood by others is, call them “Voigtlander lens that is no real Voigtlander like 50 years ago, but a Cosina that is just called Voigtlander”. Pretty handy, right?

    2. Similar to the ‘Zeiss’ emount lenses by Sony. They aren’t real Zeiss, they are made by Sony in a thailand factory.

  8. I wonder if it is be possible to make helicoid AF adapter, like if they could make it work on their 40mm, that could really be the game changer.
