(SR5) A weird Sony KW1 compact to be announced the coming days.

Like I told you days ago there will be many multiple and separate announcements from Sony. The next one will be very soon and Sony will unveil quite a strange camera. The new KW1.

It’s a compact camera with tiny 1/2.3 inch Exmor RS sensor and a 23mm f/2.0 lens. Quite unusual for a small sensor camera like that to have a prime lens. Makes me wonder if the real special thing of that camera may be a sort of curved sensor…but this is just speculation from my side. Here are the likely real specs of the camera:

– Sensor 1 / 2.3-inch Exmor RS. The number of pixels 19.2 million effective pixels
– Lens Sony G lens. Conversion 21mm F2 (4: 3). Conversion 23mm F2 (16: 9)
– Optical image stabilization
– ND filter built-in
– Monitor 3 inches 1.23 million dots
– The shutter speed -1/8000 seconds 2 seconds
– Camera application corresponding
– MicroSD / SDHC / SDXC
– Wi-Fi, NFC
– The size is 57.7mm x 125mm x 20.1mm
– 120 g Weight (body only). (Including media and battery) 136 g

  1. Well, this camera can only make sense if its an Action Cam or something, otherwise I don’t know what to make of this. 2/3 sensor and a prime lens is kinda weird. This camera would only make sense if it has a sensor bigger than 1 inch type, preferably APS-C.

    1. the casio selfie camera is a big thing, im dubious on the stacked sensor claim, there really bad at high iso, and the tiny sensor size means more noise for same iso (including pixel density) and my merrills suck up crazy detail that selfiers might not want…

  2. Lol. Sony recycling spare smartphone cameras in ‘high quality’ bodies now? 😀

And wtf is that 2 sec min SS?

    1. It will be muuuuch cheaper and it will have a better sensor + optics !!on the display side!! It is 2 cm thick, so no pancake optics needed.

      1. The 23mm field of view, f/2.0 dept of view, ND filter and app side ‘skin treatment’ I can’t think of anything else this camera is targeting at, needless to mention the dimension and the weight of it.

    1. Lol I totally forgot about that post;) guess the metallic part of the crystalish ‘cap’ is where the lens and sensor fit in? A perfume bottle inspired design aye

      1. Well I couldn’t make anything of it but maybe it is indeed a perfume container with retractable camera + LCD or something 😉

          1. Ah, now I see, it’s just the shape that reflects a perfume bottle. Probably packed with perfume in the box too.

  3. Yeah, cause that’s all we need. More emphasis on people taking selfies.

“Look at me world, aren’t I purdy?”

I’ve never understood the selfie craze. Seems blatantly narcissistic to me.

    1. Selfie takers and twitter junkies all seem to be insecure idiots that think their lives mean more than what they really do. I would feel sorry for them except they have become such a nuisance I now just hate them.

      1. I was recently in a restaurant with my wife, waiting in line (for a long time) to be seated, and saw a young man and woman taking numerous photos of their food (and posing with the food!) with their iPhones, for probably 10 minutes. And then called a waiter back to take the food to be re-heated! I noticed several other people doing the same thing – taking photos of the food. I saw one person flag down a waiter to ask if they had some more parsley he could add for the sake of the photo.

So, I walked over and quietly chewed them out – I was still in line because of stupidity like this. The restaurant owner actually pulled me aside and thanked me with a gift certificate. He said selfies and food shots are becoming a major efficiency headache for his staff and he’s considering banning photography inside his building. It would make more financial sense to turn some customers away, than slow everyone down.

People are so entitled these days. It’s really sad.

        Ok, rant over.

      2. I agree. They often look silly. WTF do they think? That they can take nice photos of themselves without us photographers?

    1. you taking the pi$$?
Because if you are not…then Sony must have the “fad” department inside the imaging department. That prestigious department would be filled of people that watch youtube, twitter, vine and instagram all day looking for the current fads. If that is the case, then Sony failed to bring us the PK1, for people planking…or the waterproof “CB1” for the cold bucket people.

  4. According to photorumors who broke the story this camera will be Sony’s first camera featurng a CMOS stacked sensor!!!

    http://photorumors.com/2014/08/17/sony-to-announce-a-new-dsc-kw1-compact-camera-with-exmor-rs-sensor/

More information and examples of what the sensor can do below

    http://photorumors.com/2012/08/20/sony-introduces-a-new-exmor-rs-sensor/

Now they may have got it wrong and it is just a curved sensor, but we will find out in a few days time

    1. Indeed, in ‘Exmor RS” the S is for Stacked. Until then Exmor RS sensors were smaller than 1/2.3″ and only used in smartphones.

  5. Could be something like the Casio TR type which sell for an insane high price and sell faster then a smart phone. The main function is to make you look like a Korean celebrity.

    1. Or is it a self-ego-cam – “look at me – I’m really great”. Here’s more pictures of me on facebook etc. etc. Next my autobiography – I’m even greater. Me, me, me & I might think of someone else. As long as they are not in my selfie.

    2. true selfie cam should have its LCD on the lens side, right next to it. There’s no point in pointing the lens outwards and seeing the world around you 🙂

  6. Very strange for me. An 1 / 2.3-inch Exmor RS sensor combined with a 21mm lens would compare to an 123mm lens on full format. There must be a mistake in the specs.

  7. I have no idea, but yeah. It could be a selfie cam, and also marketed as P&S. Canon and Nikon didn’t see this coming despite Casio selling a few yet profitable. This is the RX100 for girls, especially Asian girls.

  8. I believe this is a selfie camera to compete with the Casio TR series. the Sony China website has posted a date on the announcement for Aug 22nd i beleive….Just wondering how it would look

    1. Ah yes, it sells like hotcakes at many times the original price due to the sheer number of well-off morons littering the Chinese market, at least competition could rein in the insane price.

  9. Stop this insane madness now Sony! Stop treating your customers like idiots! WE DEMAND AN EXPLANATION AND AN APOLOGY!!!

  10. Sound like they have put a unit from one of their top smartphones into a camera. Phones don’t sell so they had some extra inventory?

  11. Based on the specs, this looks like a close match to the Casio EX-TR10/15/35 series of selfie-cams.
    * All have 1/2.3″ BSI CMOS sensors (Sony’s 19.2M resolution is higher than Casio’s 12.1M).
    * All have 3.0″ displays with 640×480 resolution (Sony claims 33% higher dot count because they use RGBW instead of RGB, but the effective resolution is the same).
    * All have 21mm fixed lens. (Sony is slightly brighter at f/2 vs. f/2.8 for Casio)
    * Dimension are similar, although Casio is ~25% thinner
    Sony= 125mm x 57.7mm x 20.1mm,
    Casio = 128.9(W)×61.6(H)×14.9(D)mm
    * All use microSD for storage.
    * All except the TR10 have WiFi

    Sony advantages:
    + Optical Stabilization
    + 58% more pixels
+ Slightly lighter (136g vs 170g with media and battery)
    + NFC

  12. That is weird…an ultrawide could mean that it’s useful for landscape, but the DR at this sensor size is total crap, you’d have to piece together a 5-shot-burst using HDR…unless it’s really cheap and is catering to people who can’t afford a decent smartphone?

  13. You’ll get two devices per package. How else could you take a selfie of your selfie cam taking selfies…. err… whatever.

  14. Does it come with a built in selfie stick? Cos getting hit in the face by an iphone on a stick never gets old…
