(SR4) Let’s forget the A7rII buzz…Sony will soon announce the next new E-mount camera! ….A6xxx likely.

roadmap

The leaked Sony roadmap shows how the A6xxx should have been released sometimes between April-June this year. Got delayed because of some hardware issues (rumor).

–

Ok guys, let’s stop the A7rII talk for a moment to go back to what really excites us GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) syndrom photographers…rumors about future Sony cameras 🙂
The last couple of days two trusted and one anonymous source (Thanks!) confirmed Sony is about to launch a new E-mount camera. I am yet not 100% sure but this should be finally(!!!!!!!) the new A6xxx (or A7000) camera!

One source told me it has a very new sensor. And he added SAR readers will love it! I hope to get specs soon! Stay tuned on SAR and subscribe here to get info when it matters:

    1. Completely agree. Enough AA filters already, they just muddy the picture. I’d love to have sensor-shift to get Foveon like benefits, but I’d be happy for now just removing that stupid low pass layer.

      1. Yeah, yesterday i found sigma sd14 in local adverts for 100 euros. Very tempted to buy it, just because of foveon.. Even foveon that old. Fantastic iq at base iso.

        1. I’d tell you not to. I owned a DP1 and DP2S, they were great at the time, now they’ve been far surpassed. The main problem is their noise at higher ISOs of course, but also Sigma’s software… It’s annoying to an extreme. That’s why I can’t wait for a more established player to release something like this, so I can keep processing pictures with photoshop (wasn’t a problem with the DPs, but today even the Merrils or the Quattros need Sigma’s SW).

    2. This spells disaster. Lots of moire and lots of aliasing artifacts that basically ruin any high quality photo. Really they should put sensible AA filter until they move to non-bayer sensor.

As long as it is Bayer I want my AA filter! and I want it strong unlike A7 where moire can be seen on most shots with Zeiss lenses.

          1. Well considering this seems like just a you issue and something you brought up, the Google reference seems silly here. I’ve been reading forums, taking pics and looking at pics online since the A7 came out and I’ve never heard anyone mention this issue until just now.

      1. If it has IBIS they could potentially use the Pentax trick used in the K-3 – using precision sensor motion blur as AA

        1. Moire and aliasing for starters with all cameras that have removed AA filter or put an extra weak filter. It is horrible for photography.

          1. Hmm, i admit that i see it very seldom. But i am far from pro photographer. Generally images without aa look crisper-punchier to me. I really felt that heavy artifacting is present in less than 1% of images.

    3. yeah lots of cams dont have AA filters..i was actually shocked that a7rII has AA filters-nikon will use the same sensor without AA filters(with software compensation) and get better result.. with a7rII having high precision IBIS, i will be shocked sony wont give a firmware update with sensor movement(Bayer filter compensation)

      1. Andrea you posted several times about upcoming kit lens upgrade for APS-C. Actually there was claim of 2 new kit lenses – 16-50 pancake upgrade and a new high end kit lens

  1. Now if the price of Sony A6000 body comes down to $350 because of the new APS-C camera, then SAR readers know which camera to buy. ?

  2. speaking of new cameras, whats the deal with the batis lenses that were released going on two months ago and still havent shown up in the mail??

    1. I bought mine form the store. It is crazy good. It is much better than the 55 which was already one of the best lenses out there….it is just unbelievably good as optics go. It is a but bad on the Af side. This is the 85mm

There was article yesterday that Zeiss are having trouble filling up orders and have a 4 months worth of orders on their plate….

      1. im pretty excited. i can already imagine what its like..hopefully itll show up before the fall so i can use it before everything is gray outside!

  3. Kudos to Sony for releasing products this fast. Did I get this straight? In October we will see another a7 release? Keep pushing it Sony, you are almost there. You nailed operation in day light, time to work on low light AF accuracy.

    1. The A7s can go down to -4EV, so it would be nice if they can make OSPADF work in this condition, and even better if they go beyond that, so would be another great blunt in DSLRs.

    2. accuracy?? My A7ii is always spot on. Problem is it hunts like crazy in low light with the 85mm Batis lens. I have almost no complaints with the 55mm.

Perhaps you are using somewhat relaxed AF settings e.g. allow camera to pick the focus point in which case it will settle for the highest contrast in the scene.

      1. It may be super accurate but painfully slow to catch the action in low light. By the time the shutter goes off the subject is out of focus in low light

        1. So far in low light I have had the best keeper rate (with A7rII, not A7II) using AF-C and Expand Flexible Spot (regular, not the tracking one) or Eye AF. For some odd reason AF-C seemed to always hunt less than AF-S in low light, and it does not easily lose the subject if you are shooting a series of images.

        2. I use AF-S with large zone and with 55/1.8 it works well in pretty dark environments. I just got the 28/2 (not very sharp lens 🙁 ) to use in darker environments

      2. Mine doesn’t. I switch to AFC, single shot and let the AF-point stay inside the PD area. Used it without problems during our last wedding. It is not as snappy as our D750 or D810 with 70-200/2.8, but fast enough to get most shots. I have more problems with wake-up time and time after switching the camera on.

  4. If this has a truly new sensor 2 possibilities come to mind.
One Sony patent has alternating pixel rows that simultaneously shoot a long and shot exposure for improved dynamic range.
Anotther patent…but I would be surprised if it

    1. or may be just cropped A7r2 sensor with full sensor readout and 4K…..

I do not see how a sensor spells the end of DSLR as Nikon will get any new sensor tech immediately. Usually Nikon get most of the innovations from Sony before Sony cameras do!

      1. You do not see why a sensor spells the end of the DSLR and I do not see why sony would put a 20mp sensor in this new camera.

      2. >Usually Nikon get most of the innovations from Sony before Sony cameras do!<

Twenty first century innovations haven't found their way to Nikon yet, good live-view and video spring to mind. Sony have both of those, Nikon, not so much.

    2. Omg, not the Barry sensor again. That should have been introduced a year ago. Wasent that what you said?

    3. I know a lot of people give Barry crap here but i enjoy reading his comments. You should have your own site, RumorsbyBarry. It would prob receive more traffic than the samsung rumor site thats never updated

  5. This could be anyone of A3100, A5200, A6100, A7000. Somewhat unlikely but why not A9. More likely than any other A7s II

  6. The A6100 just makes sense if they made the same camera but with the same PDAF capabilities of the a7rII to drive PDAF trhu adapted lenses.

  7. Here are the specs I heard:
BSI sensor – 1 stop better low light than A6000
    IBIS
    4K (was responsible for delay)

So basically it will be an A7 apsc.

    1. EVEN MORE SENSITIVE

4K – of course! but what about frame rates? a camera capable of 4K@30FPS should be able to do 1080p@120fps? That point-and-shoot can do 960. Even the damn iPhone can do 240 …

IBIS would be great but my hopes are not too high. Absolutely do expect a silent mode and 4K photo (with pre-buffering), though.

  8. The prospect of having the A6000 as my second shooter is very exciting if this new release is different enough to warrant it’s purchase (also if the price isn’t ludicrous).

    Any pricing expectations out there?

  9. IBC Convention on Sept 11. SONY has a press conference scheduled. I’m guessing it’s for the A7s-II. (Remember that the original A7s was announced that the NAB video convention)

      1. Sony is still making a77ii. But i think we all know if sony doesnt announce an a99 successor this year its officially dead.

          1. Are you sure about that Barry? I’m not a MANUFACTURING engineer, but I work here in the bay area as an electrical engineer for a major tech company. I would be surprised if they have already stopped the manufacturing process for this camera. It’s about 16 months old so who knows. It doesn’t really matter, what matters is what sony does or doesn’t announce in the next couple of months. I’m an A-mount user, honestly I’m not interested in mirrorless, if A-mount does come to an end on the manufacturing front I’ll still buy used A-mount camera’s for the next 5-7 years. I’m in my late 20’s and have no need to invest in a new system at this time. Just my 2 cents as someone in the tech field.

  10. I hope I won’t buy a new lens instead of A7000 or A6xxx if this camera is not a game changer of Sony APS-c line (IBIS, BSI, increasing low light performance… And so on)

  11. Please, please, please give us a proper 3.5 mic input. I know many people don’t need one, but a standard mic input would be great.

    1. Yeah. I’m not a fan of the ECM-XYST1M.

I can understand lacking a mic input if there were a 3.5mm to MIS adapter, but no such thing exists and hell no there is NO way I’m buying their insanely expensive XLR adapter that is the size of the camera itself.

      1. Given the failure of the Sony microphone (e.g., introducing noise) and those of us with mics already sitting around, the current situation feels like Sony’s LOL on us.

      1. It’s a Japanese company. They will not openly say that A-mount is being phased out. They will continue to answer with vague statements like “we have commitment to both mounts” until nobody asks the question anymore.

        1. To stereotype ” Japenese companies” as you do is innapropriate.
I find it personally offensive that you choose to do so in response to one of my comments,
And Dmitry Anisimov….you should be ashamed of yourself for upvoting this comment.

          1. I don’t think he was trying to be offensive. Their actions speak otherwise..pure observation IMO.

          2. Its a normal Cultural “Thing” that Japanese cant say “NO !”
So no offens for to you, but you a Asshole.. Learn the Japanese Culture please befor posting some shit about you nothing know..

          3. I am sorry if I offended anyone, that was not my intent.
My point was that we are unlikely to ever get a clear ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ kind of answer regarding future of A-mount. While frustrating for many, in this particular case this probably was the right thing to do. It keeps the door open should they change the strategy, and it has bought them a year to develop A7rII. If they announced that A-mount is being phased out when that decision was made (I believe it was decided last autumn, before A7II release), the damage would have been far greater than just leaving everyone hanging.

          4. To say that Sony will do that is ok…but to say they will do it because they are a Japanese company is not ok.

          5. I don’t really care if it’s a Japanese thing or a smart business maneuver. They are good at their game I should give them that)

  12. FE28mm a like would be great. Craving for a 1670z with 2.8, a better APS-C Macro , 70mm+ portrait lens, then i can really skip the A7 series all along 🙂

    1. That’s exactly the opposite of what sony wants you to do, so that’s why it will not happen. What i see happing is cheap FE lenses for apsc users and then be like ” oh i have lenses already, why not byy full frane body, its so cheap “

      1. It does seem exactly like that. That’s why I am on the edge of buying the a7000 OR go full frame with a A7ii w/ Batis 85mm and SEL2870, that along will surpass my current Zeiss + NEX-6 combo. Especially when the high end lens costs similar. $$$$$

  13. Finally! The A7Rii is great but also way too expensive (for me).. and I still have a couple of APS-C E mount lenses laying around that are waiting for a new daddy 🙂

    1. I can buy 4 used A900’s for that kind of cash. Imagine walking around with 4 a900’s strapped to your neck- pretty awesome huh.

      1. Yup! Since Sony not going to make a A99m2 I think I may snag one of those A900’s when all of these e-mount shooter get rid of there’s! Former Sony Artisan Nigel Barker still shoots with his! I guess he didn’t drink the e-mount kool-aid!

  14. PLEASE!!! 4K video, silent mode and maybe IBIS is all I’m asking for 🙂 (although a mic in and a super-high res mode would also be cool :P). Also a good idea would be 4K photo, which is now pretty much standard in 4/3 cameras.

  15. What about the new FE lenses the Sony people said were coming this year? Or at least announced. Something about long glass? 🙂

    1. Yes, some kind of reasonable F2.8 zoom please….I recently went to a wedding and bought a cheap(ish) RX10 for F2.8 and zoom, but on the smaller sensor the results were OK, but a bit noisy at higher ISOs, so I do wonder how much better the results would have been on my nex6 if I’d had access to a lower light zoom of SOME kind.

  16. I sent my A7II back due to overheating and poor battery life. The A7000
    may be a better camera.

    1. My A6000 does pretty well with battery life. Not as good as a DSLR, but it can last me one full day on a single battery, and I’ve managed to go through fairly long timelapses and startrails with it without my battery dying. I still have 4 batteries, but that’s just in case. I think that the A7000 or A6100 would do pretty well too.

          1. I had up to 1100+ photo on a single battery with A7rII. (raw, and mostly live view shooting)

        1. It was probably a defective battery. Too bad, it sucks to get a new camera and not being able to enjoy it because of something like that.

    2. Depends how you use it. It may be as low as 400 shots or as high as 1000. Buyt the battery is small. Strange when Sony officially claim around 300 shots in marketing brochures how you got disappointed at 400….

    1. Indeed that’s why Canon 5DR S got professional DSLR of the year 2015 instead of A99ii and that’s because Sony understood nothing about real business and will end like Apple, making innovation to increase patents pool and release new models every year to get easy cash….

      1. They understand that e-mount makes them relevant on the market, something that A-moun never did for them, stop being naive, wake up.

      2. Camera of the year mostly by default, I can’t think of anything new in that price range that was released within the judging period. The 5DR is a bit of a disappointment, lacks versatility and is all but useless for video.

  17. A7s might do -4EV on STATIC subjects, but if you are shooting moving subjects in low light it’s AF becomes close to useless. To me, A7rII feels better in low light AND moving subjects.

    1. That’s why I hoped for a OSPDAF on that, it already can work in low light condition, just need a PDAF to improve tracking and speed.

    1. The PDAF sensors may as well be different. Or may be just the processor or even something else very mundane may be prohibiting FW update to allow A7r m2 AF…ohh and of course marketing would not allow it even is physically possible. You live in some hyper simplified world…

      1. i mean it’s possible to do by FW upgrade but marketing wouldn’t allow it.
PDAF sensors are different, for sure, but at least center AF point must work.

  18. Guys, i’ve just got word of a bunch of secret rumors from our “anonymous” source. Here are the OFFICIAL SPECS!!!

    1. 75MP BSI 4DFX Sensor
    2. 10X the dynamic range of the a7RII. Feature is called: Mega DR Ultra +
    3. IBIS Pro 5D – 7 AXIS (you heard that right), 7 f’in axis stabilization.
    4. 5K Video with 120FPS – 4K with 180FPS and finally 1080p with 900FPS
    5. 4 Mic Inputs
    6. POP UP 3D viewfinder, does not take any space on Camera
    7. 10,000 mah rechargeable battery
    8. UNDERWATER proof- 50m Depth Range!

    AWESOME!!!

      1. ibis is good but no ibis it’s okay,
        i wish efficiency heat-pipe (sony told a6xxx was video-centric),
        more color-bit on video shooting,
        more bit rate,
continue-video AF ready good compare dual-pixel from Canon.

    1. It’s certainly a possibilty. That fullframe sensor might still be better in certain situations though. But I wish there was a better APS-C zoom than the 16-70mm.

    2. It is not, rest assured. With current tech, no APS-C could catch up IQ of A7. Maybe in 4-5 years. It will be at least half stop worse, and even that would be a great feat. The best current APSC sensors are somewhere around D700 iq-wise. And that camera is 7 years old. But on the other hand, it will certainly be much faster, snappier and feature packed than A7.

    1. You don’t understand, october roadmap is not what is planned in October, it is the plan for Apr/may/june that was done october last year.

      1. It does say FY15 so that would mean the roadmap would have had to be from october 14 for these to be released 3 months ago.

  19. Too early. They will wait until the hype surrounding A7rII calms down before throwing another punch. Also, another camera with internal 4K would slow A7rII sales and I doubt they want that just yet. Lastly, I have a strong suspicion that A7sII will be different from other II updates. They said that short term their focus is now on wedding and event photographers. That means good low light performance, better AF and data redundancy. That means that either there will be A9 soon, or A7sII will change it’s role from mostly video and low light tool to something more.

    1. Abandoning? Why? Had they ever had foothold in wildlife?

I bought recently 70-400 lens and use it on A6000 for casual shooting of animals when on trips. Works very well.

A77m2 seems to be quite impressive but really seems niche to wildlife people if they ever considered Sony

      1. A77ii with 70-400 lens is the best sony for wildlife, especially with the extra reach of apsc sensor. i tried the same lens on a7rii with lea3 adaptor, and that’s where a7rii falls short. for the price a7rii should be better. sony would be abandoning wildlife photographers if they stop at a77ii.

      2. Yes, I’ve got the a77II and I am very fond of it. I am looking for an FF and there’s a need for a A99-successor.
A-mount: supports TC:s, screw drive, long tele lenses, faster af tracking in low light…
E-mount: no support for TC:s, no native tele lenses above 200 mm, adapter dependent which slows down af considerably, adapter for screw drive with obsolete af-module…
        C’mon Sony build us the A99II !

  20. after shooting with a7rii for 3 weeks, an a99ii/a9/a-mount is definitely needed for sony to establish itself as worthy of pros

    1. Yeah, right, just like the A99 and A77II did soooooo much for Sony’s market share, despite being the best in class. Keep dreaming.

  21. The two things I dislike about my A7S, the poor rolling shutter performance for video and my nose smudging and touching the LCD, absolutely find the faux pentaprism placement of the EVF not to my liking, wish for a corner mount EVF. S35/APS-C is fine except for the FOV change.

  22. Whoa! 7-axis! Since there are only 6 degrees of freedom in 3 dimensions, that means that it even stabilizes the curvature of time! We can take pictures that actually remove gravity and gravitational lensing from the image! Awesome! I’ve always been bothered by getting all those Einstein rings in my astrophotography. Now I can finally straighten out distant galaxies and ignore dark matter.

    1. But it’s no contender for Olympus Galactical Axis Stabilization, that moves the Galaxy around the camera to stabilize your image.

    2. I will wait for the next model, the one with 8 axis stabilization, that can take a picture of what you see trough the holographic viewfinder at any selected date in time.

    1. I think it will be available for purchase a couple of weeks after the announcement just like with the RX10M2 and RX100M4,, so if they announce the A6100/A7000 in the beginning of September it would be available somewhere around the end of the month.

  23. Unless Sony announce new APSC E mount lenses along with the new camera I am out. What is the point of buying a new APSC body if the only new lenses coming from Sony have focal legnths optimised for Full Frame?

      1. I don’t want or need full frame. I will never downgrade to a heavier more expensive system. APSC is enough for me 🙂

      2. “I don’t want or need full frame. I will never downgrade to a heavier more expensive system.”

That’s all well and good. But I’m dumping m43 because I feel like the overall system architecture and sensor size is going to become limiting for me. Also, that Panasonic & to a lesser degree Olympus are not really committed to producing a range of superlative quality lenses for the system. Just lots of middling to very good ones. (I wouldn’t post that at m43 rumors because I have reason to be a FUD troller.) Look at the sensor and lens tests on DX0mark, the only mirrorless ones competing in top spots are Sony/Zeiss.

“When you upgrade to full frame you won’t have to replace all your APS-C lenses”

This is exactly what I plan to do. Bodies will come and go but top quality glass can last “forever” on the emount system. I’ll probably buy a used A6000 or NEX7 just to get me started, but a new FE 35 2.8 or even 1.4, so it’s a standard lens on E and a WA on FE. In a year or two when something better than A7rII comes out, buy one of those used.

        1. “Look at the sensor and lens tests on DX0mark, the only mirrorless ones competing in top spots are Sony/Zeiss.”
Which is a bit crazy if you think about it because, going back to the origins of MILC concepts, the lack of a need for retrofocus designs was SUPPOSED to mean wide angle to standard lenses could have superior quality. So why so few wide angle MILC lenses in top spots other than Sony/Zeiss?

        2. “Also, that Panasonic & to a lesser degree Olympus are not really
committed to producing a range of superlative quality lenses for the
system. Just lots of middling to very good ones.”

Huh? All Olympus Pro lenses (8/1.8, 7-14/2.8, 12-40/2.8, 40-150/2.8) are awesome. Plus 60/2.8 and 75/1.8. Who can have any problems with their quality (as opposed to price)? Panasonic 42.5/1.2, 15/1.7 are awesome too. And if you are talking only about optical quality, Oly 45/1.8, Pana 42.5/1.7, Pana 30/2.8 macro, Pana 45/2.8 macro are also without fault.

  24. How about an A77r with removable SLT mirror. I hope before sony kills off a-mount they release a model without slt. I have a couple specks of dust on that crap that I’ve never been able to blow off. I wish sony kept the a-mount for classic DSLR users and use the E mount for contemporary design and features.

      1. You can’t physically clean the slt mirror unlike a sensor(besides blowing). I have a couple stubborn pieces of dust on my slt for the last year.

  25. RX must be somewhere on the horizon. I am assuming RX will be more of a technology show case than the A7 series: curved sensor, stacked sensor, full colour sensing or any other technology that is ready for production. Easier to implement in a fixed lens design, limited risk and offers a clear differentiation with competing products.

  26. please please please add 1) 2.6m dot EVF, 2) level gauge to the new A6xxx like the NEX 7.

we know the reason for down-res EVF in A6xxx, but thats almost 2 years ago, tech must have moved on since then. same frame rate but higher res will be welcomed.

  27. It’s since 2014 that they say that Sony “is about to launch” an A7000.
An abouth that lasts about two years!
A6000 price is so low and I can’t buy due to this rumors.. But it says NOTHING!
As I say: SR4, somebody will win Powerball.
    Plaese be more specific: WHEN?!

  28. They have never been best in class, shedding 1/2EV of light on the mirror. Especially A99, with only 24mpix and poor focusing, while costing much more than comparable 6D and D600.
