This is a small surprise: Mitakon already announced a new “PRO” version of the superfast 50mm f/0.95 Speedmaster Full Frame E-mount lens! The current version sells for $849 at BHphoto or $899 on [shoplink 27366 ebay]eBay[/shoplink]. The lens will be named “The Dark Knight” and have these three major upgrades:
1. Improved lens coating, which makes the lens have better performance
2. Filter thread changed to 67mm from 58mm
3. New bayonet lens hood to prevent light flare and improve “back light “s situation performance.
Note that the current “non-PRO” version is pretty good: 3dKraft (Click here) just posted his Speedmaster 50/0.95 vs. SLR Magic HyperPrime CINE 50mm T0.95 comparison!

The “better performance” part of that announcement remains to be seen. But the lens hood is a welcome addition.
Why didn’t they use the “improved coating” to begin with.
Haha, I hope it comes with a “The Dark Knight” engraving on the front ring too, bringing endless embarrassment to anyone using the lens. Or wait, actually “Speedmaster” was already reasonably close to achieving this goal anyways…
Wonder why they chose such funny names for their product. Target customer 11yo?
Do you know the “Family Jewels FUQ690” ? That always made me laugh 🙂
I did know about Family Jewels branded flash units but I didn’t know that they had such interesting identifiers.
i heard an SR5 “the dark knight” is actually going to be engraved on the front element.
Yeah, laser-etched. Hah.
I would LOVE “The Dark Knight” engraved on mine. And no sane company would target an eleven year old with anything other then a go pro variant or boss cel cam. This is clearly made for people who never grew up. Come to papa! Who’s a medium format bokeh girl.. awww.
Besides that the people who complain about bokeh – Pick your f’n background more carefully, maybe realize, perhaps the background is important! maybe, wow, maybe as important as the foreground subject! Oh wow… You want smooth, pick a wall, you want gnarly, pick foliage, you want linear pick a city, whatevs, people who get sheepy bokeh need to go back to camera school. 0.95 is impressionist, really I think it is only made for certain people.
as if speedmaster isn’t enough…let’s name it the dark knight and put pro version on it….ohhh the chinese people…they always makes me laugh.
If you choose a Chinese name for your product, I´m sure it would sound equally ridiculous, maybe even more so. Like the extremely stupid Chinese language used in most American movies and games.
The last time I checked a “pro” version of a product from Japan, they never start putting PRO, Speedmaster or some name in risk of getting sued.
Simplicity is the key, and foreign makers in China doesn’t start adding words to a product name trying to get attention..
Joke or not , I don’t give a shit about the name , as long as I don’t have to pay 10,000$ to Leica because they think they are special. Out special this leica , funny name , the same perfomance as noctilux(if not better) , less than one tenth the price , you a**hole.
i doubt that they will label the lens actually “the dark knight”, calm down everybody, its just a advertisement slogan
Pro = fixed?
Thats chinese for you…Pro means professionally priced.
Can you imagine how the early buyers feel like early suckers now?
why? The already got the “classic” version now…
I`m actually impressed by how sharp the in focus area is, but the out of focus area is horrendous. That has got to be the ugliest bokeh I`ve seen on any lens. It doesn`t look like it`s out of focus it looks like smeared mush.
Bokeh .. And how exactly … Do you measure … Bokeh.
You don’t. It’s all about how it looks to you. If you like it, it’s good bokeh. If you don’t like it, it’s bad bokeh.
The Bokeh doesn’t look that bad to me. Any particular examples?
I checked some night bokeh pictures of the speedmaster, on flicker. I don’t like it at 0.95 but it is quite nice at f2.
But it is hard to have a beautiful night bokeh at such an aperture.
Even the Noctilux doesn’t have a beautiful bokeh, wide open.
Man, I’m looking forward to see reviews on this lens! If it’s reasonably priced and offers good quality, I might want one! And who cares if it’s written “Speedmaster” or “Dark Knight” on it, so long as it helps taking good pictures! 🙂 I really want SLR Magic’s 35mm HyperPrime Cine, too.
It’s rediculous that this lens is E-Mount, not A-Mount.
Fast lenses are supposed to be reserved for A-Mount.
WTF is Mitakon thinking?
Perhaps you should switch to E-Mount. That way you are an adapter away from the best of both worlds.
Nope. This way you’re stuck with a teeny-tiny camera with no proper AF with whatever lens you’re using.
True. But Autofocus is the next shoe to drop for E-mount. A6000 is a sign of what’s to come.
And besides, this is a manual focus lens anyway.
A6000’s AF is made of many tiny AF sensors on the image sensor. Because they are small, they won’t be any good in low light, and you can’t make them bigger, because… well, image sensor. That shoe ain’t dropping any time soon, AFAIK.
Focus peaking.
You obviously never shot with an A7.
Theres no rule saying E Mount is supposed to only get small apertures. Wake up man… Zeiss is gonna release some fast Aperture FE lenses, too. Will you come again here to complain? Just go out and shoot with your oh-so-fast-A-only lenses.
You are incorrect. I have owned the a55, a65, a77, a99, a77ii, a6000, a7, a7s. I can tell you that the a6000 AF in low light is almost on par with the a77ii and the a7s. However it beats the heck out of the a7, a7r, a77.. Probably on par with a99. And the low light IQ is on par with a99 as well. The autofocus is fantastic but its usage is not yet fluid enough for consistent pro work. The next model e mount should have that with the true color fovean like sensor. Lets hope Sony is also lying and they are stealing olympus secrets and crown the cam with 5-axis stabilization. Boss. In a pickle. In a hat type Boss. Zeiss would be masturbating on the sidelines.
Anyway a6000 AF is very very very good, even in low light its solid.
If AF is what you’re after, then you shouldn’t complain about this lens going to E mount. It’s not an AF lens.
E-Mount = f/4 zooms, f/1.8 or f/2 prime
A-Mount = f/2.8 zooms, f/1.4 prime
That’s how it was supposed to be, A-Mount for pro, E-Mount for compactness
An f/0.95 prime for E-Mount with no A-Mount doesn’t make sense
Except that creating a 50 mm f/0.95 lens is much easier (and thus allows the lens to be smaller and/or lighter and/or optically better). See the image I posted above that shows that the lens design of this lens could not be used for an A-mount lens.
That’s the way it went, but that’s not the way it has to stay. E-mount also needs to be attractive for all kinds of people, and I think that it will only become better and better, with more options. It’s not about always staying compact no matter what, it’s about being able to be compact when you need compact, and being able to get full out professional quality when you need it. That would be the ideal, and I hope that’s what Sony has in mind!
If Sony enables E-Mount to “get full out professional quality”, what would make customers buy A-Mount bodies? It would create internal competition for Sony among its own products.
Does it matter, so long as people buy from Sony? At some point, DSLRs won’t have any advantage against mirrorless cameras, performance and quality wise. For now, there are still many good reasons to buy DSLRs. But when there won’t be any reasons to buy them anymore (there always will be, of course, just not for the majority of people, including pros), well, at least Sony will still get business.
I don’t see why fast lenses should be exclusive to A-mount. And it’s not like this lens is made by Sony anyway. Anyway, I see that some people are pretty frustrated to see that small cameras are getting attention.
Who still uses amount lenses anyway?
Everybody who shoots SLT, obviously
Those who are still waiting for a worthwile and versatile lens lineup for E-mount.
That’s interesting…you guys complain that new lenses are being released for e mount, and then complain that there aren’t enough lenses for e mount in the very same thought. It’s no wonder that Sony has no idea how to please you guys…it’s not possible.
Well, they have good A-mount adapters. If only they released an E-mount camera with good ergonomics and built-in stabilization and auto-focus… And maybe some lossless HDMI output… I might consider.
Yeah, what where they thinking by not releasing an A-mount lens where the last lens elements protrudes more than an inch into the mirrorbox.
Ah, image-embedding doesn’t work:
http://oi59.tinypic.com/8wgm7o.jpg
Well of course it protrudes – because they designed it for E-Mount. If they designed it for A-Mount, it wouldn’t.
Made me laugh. Thats like saying “fast engines are reserved for Ferraris”. Nothing is reserved for anything. Everything is possible.
Better coating and an improved lens hood is surely welcome to some interested people.
“The dark knight” – although being aged already I like it. 🙂
Maybe they release a shorter ultra fast one – the “Night Owl” 24/1.2
Or the “Hawk Eye” 135/1.8
Just kidding 🙂
That would actually be nice!
It better have PRO written on it. My pro white 70-200 and pro full frame body let people know I’m shooting pro pics. Only metal bodied lenses that are dust, fire and reptile resistant are pro grade.
I’m waiting for the Extra Good Luck Super Mega Pro Edition.
Bane disapproves. “You merely adopted the dark. I was born in it, molded by it.”
The next Mitakon should be the “Bane Ultra Mufackin’ Pro”.
I pre-ordered the original version back in May and it’s still not shipped. I can confirm due to the delay in production of the lens, all those still waiting will be getting this new Dark Knight version made by Zy Optics and will be shipped 20th to 23rd Aug. http://www.zyopticslens.com/news20140808.html
Just received the PRO version. Love it except for one annoyance: every time you take a picture, the built-in speaker on the lens says “Thank you for buying The Dark Knight Speedmaster Pro lens.” Thankfully, there is a button on the lens to make the audio playback volume lower. Other than that, it’s worth every penny.
Does anybody know if this lens is purchasable in HK? If so, where, how much in HKD.
