Gavin: “Thought you might like to share this timelapse movie that was shot entirely with the Sony A7R https://vimeo.com/97785257”
Baron: “During our family vacation, I got to test the Sony FDR-AX100. As a tourist I needed a small and lightweight video camera. As a videographer I wanted to shoot in a higher resolution than HD. My subjects were shy and fast. The Malaysian weather was unpredictable. To add to that challenge, I brought along my hyperactive 3 year old daughter. I’m happy to say that the Sony AX100 met all my needs. Editing the 4K footage in Final Cut Pro X on an iMac was very smooth. Vacationeers and travellers would enjoy using the Sony AX100. Here’s the video. Be sure to watch it in 4K http://youtu.be/YOgwCtgO1Vs”
Heather & Mat: “Here is a recent article we wrote about using the Sony A7 (yes, that’s right, the A7 not the A7s!) for low-light video shooting. The video is of a contemporary dance performance that took place 30 metres underground in the ancient Bourbon Tunnel in Napoli (Naples).

Great timelapse stuff from Gavin.
The FE2470 review exactly concludes what I think.
It is for what it is capable of far too expensive.
As I said previously – there is correction in both Lightroom and DxO Elite available, but when it comes down to sharpness across the frame, you are lost on the A7x.
For the time being I am using the ZA’s 1635 and 2470 via adapter, but that’s not what I was going for with the FE.
I can live without a standard zoom, but I need UW (either zoom, or a short prime (between 12 and 16mm). So I hope that Sony took some QM advisories of the 2470 serious, and will produce a better 1635 FE (which we will see soon, hopefully).
Or price it accordingly. If it is like the 24-70/4 then 350 Euros is a *excellent* price for Sony.
Early reports on the 24-70mm paired with the A7s look much more promising, so the lens may well be a bit short on quality paired with the 7r, but good with the 12 MP sensor of the 7s. I have the lens and the 7r and have been unimpressed with it, although it is ahead of the 28-70mm kit lens. I will be getting the 7s shortly and I hope that I will be able to get more use out of the 24-70mm on that body.
I think that is why we see a delay in the 16-35mm after its announcement. Making sure it is up to Sony’s expectations.
The Polish site that tested the A6000 gave 9 out of 10 for the AF, and called it effective. But later they call it poor and not accurate, and list this as the biggest drawback. I guess it depends how fast the subject moves and how well it’s lit, but I wouldn’t call this AF poor in the mirrorless world. Maybe if you compare it to the D4 or 1D.
I guess they got their check from Fuji 🙂
Sigma is going to make a new 300-600 mm sport lens.
Latest rumors give this an 80% probability.
Considering the popularity of the Tamron 150-600 this would be expected.
I will be doing my last big bird shoot in August and if ny preordered Sony mount does not come before then I will definitely cancel it.
Since I will then not need it for a while I will rent something for the shoot..I will then choose between Tammy and Siggy when the time comes and I will determine what mount to get when Canon anounces thier new stacked sensor in September. If Sony does not offer something worthwhile it will be a very convenient time for me to switch as I am buying both a new lens and a camera it will stay on at that time.
The two issues that force ne to consider switching are that sony has given no clear indication that they will support my system competitively, and for that same reason Tamron and Sigma are reluctant to make Sony mounts until long after everyone else has the lenses.
Add to that the lack of compatability and confusion about what products can be used with what Sony products.
Its been several years since Sony has made an A mount camera thats a sufficient upgrade for me to switch.
If the competition beats them to it………?
Let me ask you this. What do you mean by “stacked” sensor? There are stacked BSI sensors that have the Bayer RBG pattern. Are you getting these terms right?
3 layers rgb so the new 54mp sensor would probably be 18mp x 3
Definitely not talking about bayer which for most applications will soon be obsolete.
How soon? lol
Super-telephoto lenses are an area where Sony and Canikon have fallen down. Sure they have amazing prime lenses but they’re priced like a good used car and too impractical for all but a select few. Tamron has lit a fire under Sigma’s butt with the 150-600mm. They’re flying off the shelves and hard to find.
My only concern with the Sigma rumor is they’re speculating it’ll be a companion for their 120-300mm f/2.8 sports lens which has a MSPR of $5,200 and is currently discounted to $3,599 on their web site. The 300-600mm is expected to be faster than the Tamron, maybe f/4. That means big and expensive though I’m sure the Sigma would superior to the Tamron in IQ and construction. Here’s a review of the 120-300mm to give you a preview of what you’re probably looking at in a new Siggy: http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/sigma_120_300mm_f2_8_dg_os_hsm_review/
.
I’m still holding onto my Tammy 200-500mm. While optically its mediocre on the long end, it leads in this category in weight while being good-enough construction-wise.
I emailed Tamron Monday asking for an update on when they expect the 150-600mm to be out in an Sony mount. Naturally, crickets in reply. I hope you get yours by August when you need it but I wouldn’t hold my breath. They’ll sit on the Sony mount until they catch up with the Canikon demand which is insatiable right now.
Based on my conversations with Tamron it is unlikely I will see the lens for my shoot in which case I will definitely cancel my preorder…primarily to give me the option of switching either lens and or mount when I see what new stuff comes out.
I am not commited to switching systems or lens but am definitely open to the opportunity.
I will not buy the 120-300 for 3 reasons…
Not close focusing enough…I need 1/2 for a lens of that length.
Too expensive
Too heavy…since my long lens would by mounted on my chest and essentially weightless this lens would be hand held and its too big for that….it would be doable if I did not also carry a longer lens..but I do.
I currently have the Sigma 70-300 f4-5.5 apo macro. It focoses to 1/2 and is extremely usefull as a ready for almost anything carry along lens. It is not however a very high quality lens and I wold like to see something like 100-300 f3-f4 macro which should be priced less than the current 120-300 f2.8
I am hoping tha Sigma actually wants to compete with both Tammy and the Canikon monster lenses..If so the wise move would be to go somewhere between f5 and 5.6 for the new 300-600mm…this would allow a 125mm filter thread….the weight should be about 8 lb or less and the cost should be around $2000.
This would compete with both the Tammy and the monster primes.
My camera rig …dotline dl-v9 …. that allows me to operate my camera with one finger will support up to 10 lb. Cotton carrier would support more wieght however.
If built similar to my description I would probably choose Sigma..if built similar to your description I will probably stay with Tamron.
Well, after I replied to you I went to a Sigma rumors site and was surprised by their analysis which differed from my own speculation influenced by a photo blog covering Photokina.
The first source I looked at mentioned the f/4 but it seems unreasonably fast for such a long lens. Doing a little more ‘research’ (pretty hilarious because it’s just more photo nerd bloggers speculating) f/5.6 naturally comes up like you mention. So the consensus speculation is a fixed aperture faster than Tamron’s 150-600mm.
With Sigma emphasizing quality with their Art and Global series, I would expect the Sigma 300-600mm to be more ‘pro’ (probably added to the Global series) than the Tammy 150-600mm. It seems the direction Sigma is leaning. That means pricier, bigger and heavier. Though, as we’ve both mentioned, it means better IQ and construction.
I’m probably still keener on the Tammy because the 150-600mm is already really getting into a weight category I’d rather not go to. I don’t really like dragging tripods (my old college-era one hasn’t been used in years), monopods (bought a nice one but it stays in the trunk), or harnesses. Part is weight but I could get a good backpack to carry a tripod or monopod. But mostly it gets in the way because I’m constantly swapping lenses which is slow enough as it is just fetching stuff out of my bag.
I probably will eventually break down and buy the Tammy 150-600mm. If for no other reason than I expect it to be better at 500mm than my 200-500mm. 600mm will probably be about where my 200-500mm is in terms of sharpness, maybe a hair better. We’ll see which spends more time in my closet.
Since I don’t expect the Tamron 150-600mm to be available until 2015 in quantity for Sony I have plenty of time to consider my options. I’ve even been shopping old classic Minolta 400 f/4.5 lenses on FleaBay since it’d work well with my 1.4 teleconverter but we get into the big and heavy and expensive territory with the added concern of getting a reliable, complete used kit.
My suggestion was not based on the rumors you found but rather on what I consider practical cost effectiveness.
Tammy has a 95mm filter thread which is relayively standard and uses relatively easily available lens blanks.
125mm is the next size with that samecost advantage and would translate to between f5 tof5.6.
That would be faster an higher quality than Tammy and lighter and less expensive than Canikon.
Thats why I think that size would be good.
Keeping the camera lens combo under 10 lb would also be a big sales factor and I think this size would come in under 8 lb especially if they utilzed thermally stabilized abs which could be economically manufactured on 3D printers.
Utilizing these methods it seems posible to keep the price below $2000 which would be crucial to big sales.
“Nissin i40 for Sony will be available around the early of this August” I see it says that for Emount is coming soon on the US site. JP site has been saying coming in June since April. Where can I find the available day?
I’d like to know too. Even in Japan, I could only find it for CaNikon and 4/3.
Need help. Ok, I want to take a look at some RAW files from the A7S. I’d like to see what I could pull from the shadows and how it handles noise. Anyone know where I can find some downloadable RAW samples? Thanks.
First entry… Come on man.

Once again a bunch of news about NEX, RX, QX…
Come on, this used to be a site about Sony Alpha.
and now sony alpha is dead?
One short trip to anywhere will show that E mount still cameras are and always have been branded ALPHA cameras. See this photo of the original NEX 5.
http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/NEX5/NEX5A.HTM
See the alpha symbol? Yeah, that’s right. It’s an alpha camera. Deal with it.
I don’t see a sign that says “Sony A-Mount Rumors”. The site is called Sony Alpha rumors and the OWNER has every right to post WHATEVER he wants, mkay?
Sony can market NEX as a sniper rifle, won’t make it one.
It’s still a completely different system. Putting the α logo on it doesn’t make NEX compatible/interchangeable with the α system.
α was also the name of the Minolta system in Japan (α-5/D, α-7/D and α-9)
your are confusing the Alpha brand with the A-mount because the logo look like an “a”.
As Nolivfr stated Alpha was the name of Minolta System in Japan , Maxxum for the US and Dynax for Europe and when Sony bought Minolta they decided to use the Alpha brand worldwide.
So Sony Alpha Rumors covers A & E-mount and it’not admin fault if he doesn’t receive any A-mount rumors.
Someone just got schooled lol
Wondering, as I wait for more news about the A99’s successor: is it possible for a SLT camera to have a silent shutter? Does SLT technology require a mechanical action?
If anything SLT is capable of quieter operation than a DSLR.
