FS7 looking sexy
“Sony Introduces World’s First Full-Frame Lens with Power Zoom”
Wow! not that anyone liked them, but the Minolta Xi lenses did actually exist!
And were full frame, according to dyxum:
http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/Minolta-AF-35-80mm-F4-5.6-Power-Zoom_lens335.html
Still have 2 of them, both still working fine on A-mount cameras. It’s truly lame that Sony – now owning these very designs – doesn’t know that.
they probably know, it’s just marketing’s generic bold claims.
Where is the FE 16-35 and the Macro?
Andrea – are these being announced on Monday, or is there a 2nd event today?
I just don’t understand why they don’t integrate that cable inside the adjustable grip. I hope it’s replaceable, with plug on both ends, because wrapping up the grip shows that cable wadding and smashing. Nice feature, but could have a bit more elegance in the design, like a push button tension lock, rather than that old style light stand screw knob.
Sony’s agency invited bloggers from around the world to demonstrate a camera that costs how much again? $8000
I guess the bloggers’ audiences is where this camera is aimed at.
I guess they are right…this guy could have been more successful if he had an FS7:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yx2YiMALbWY
NOTE: I am not aiming this the guys from Cinema5D since their work has been paramount to the rise of DSLR as tools for professionals. Rather, I am questioning why Sony did not seek other talented filmmakers to make outstanding shorts for them. How about digging a bit of vimeo and not youtube?
For the top level YouTubers who are earning a good living from YT, then $8k might not be so unreasonable for them.
And these cameras last years. The year to year cost of the bodies compared to photography bodies really isn’t much higher.
The FS700 (+ 7Q) is around 2 years old already and I can see it easily lasting another 2-3 for current owners.
Bloggers are the once that spread the news.
If you worked at my company and only invited a few camera men that would spread the experience to their closest friends instead of millions of viewers across the globe I would fire you within a second.
Didnt think that one through did ya 🙂
I say inviting bloggers like Cinema5D was the best move they could make.
I don’t mind who they give the camera and lenses to. So long as they show me something interesting about the camera or lens.
Still don’t understand the LCD View finder loop, it is filmsy at best. Why can’t they just have a EVF. Honestly I’m still waiting for a FS100 replacement in the $4000 price range.
It gives you the option. plenty of 3rd party options…
Its not flimsy at all if you ask me (had an FS100), its simply brilliant. So is the included grip relocator (wonder what Zacuto thought about that 🙂 )
Wow
The lens looks awesome, rock-solid. I guess it will be a good equipment for serious videographers.
A great camera, especially in the 8000$ front!
Well then, it looks like they finally have an updated version of the Minolta 28-135. 😀
Mmm I want something about 21 or 24mm 1.8 first though… oh well.
Cool, but I thought there was supposed to be some wow lens announced. All we got was video stuff? I guess this was just wow for videographers.
You got it.
And only an echo of the WOW from the announcement in spring.
purely video stuff, of little or actually NIL interest to still shooting users’ community 🙁 !!
What did you expect ? It’s the press conference for IBC a pro video broadcasting show.
Photokina open Monday.
The FS7 is a pure Winner. They have taken whats best about the FS100/FS700/Canon C100 and made it better. If the IQ is there this could be the new indie/docushooter king.
Think I’ve spotted a typo in yesterday’s wow announcement…
🙂
Where are those guys imploring everyone mocking the “Wow” vow from Sony?
A matching slow zoom for a very low res sensor is “Wow”?
An idiot is an idiot. This lens is insane and goes way beyond ‘wow’.
LOL! You are still kicking about! Fabulous guy! 🙂
Definitely not 1 for the stills crowd… Hopefully we’ll see a bigger announcement next week – if they announce the tele-macro then I might just pull the trigger on an a7.
looks nice. i like it.
This would be a great lens on the A7S. Except it will look like a big black trunk hanging off a tiny little A7S. Still looks like a better lens than the Zeiss FE 24-70/4 POS lens
Actually the specs say it is only 6″ Long and 4″ Diameter at the widest point.
The pictures make it look somewhat larger, but if the info above (from Adorama) is correct, its not that big at all. A little over 1200 grams is fairly heavy though, but if it is also good for stills, I will have to give Sony some more money.
Wish Sony E-Mount has a 24-70/2.8
They don’t have plans for f/2.8 contant zoom because it makes the A7’s cameras unbalanced – which is why I wonder why don’t they make a proper sized camera, which doesn’t have to be big. One that doesn’t sacrifice the shutter, heat issues, battery, etc. SO they either have plans for that becoming the A99 or there has to be a different form factor for these FF cameras.
One thing’s for sure. Sony had better start leaking lots of information about their next A-Mount cameras because I’m sure there are lots of others who like me are sorely tempted by the Nikon D750 at this moment.
Sony service and availability where I live is almost non-existent so the switch to Nikon(or Canon) seems very, very feasible. I’ll just junk the heavy investment I made into Minolta/Sony stuff.
the ‘new’ nikon is just a ‘more of the same’ camera that symbolizes the stagnation of the canikon dslr market…
+1. When I look at Nikon users salivating over the “new nikon”, I am flabbergasted. What are they talking about?!
maybe they are raving about the revolutionary tilt screen…
and let’s not forget about the any less revolutionary built-in WiFi!
No point switching to Canon. http://newcameranews.com/2014/08/21/canon-threatens-release-of-eos-m3/
Nikon… meh, perhaps. But Sony/Panasonic/Olympus/FujiFilm is where all the fun is at with their mirrorless cameras! 🙂
Way more excited that the Odyssey 7Q is getting 4K Pro Res support for the FS700 and others by the end of the month!! Thats huge for FS700 owners that have only had access to 4K RAW, which is nigh unusable.
The most important question: is this lens focus-by-wire or fully manual? Electronic aperture or fully manual?
The 28-135mm makes no sense on anything but a full frame camera like the VG900. Put the A7s sensor in the VG900 with internal 4K 60p and it would be a killer camera.
Auto focus?
I don’t know if it has, it probably does but you don’t really rely on AF in video, so AF-related info is not that relevant for videographers in general.
Wish that F7 grip had cables concealed. Folding it up looks to crush the chord. Why not have contacts built inside with no cables? You know, thoughtful components from visionary designers.
LOL, the 28-135mm at this price makes no sense as i bought the 18-105 G (27-157 mm) for 469 euro ( sony sales included) …
Sure, but does it have all the amenities that the new lens has? NO!
Those things count for a LOT in high volume video work.
Sony said that this is the first power zoom lens for a full frame camera, but in the 90s, Minolta release several power zoom lenses for their 35mm SRL Maxxum cameras, and 35mm is Full frame!!!
http://www.ebay.com/gds/Minolta-Maxxum-xi-Power-Zoom-lenses-on-the-Sony-Alpha-/10000000009576612/g.html
“In 1991 Minolta released their xi power zoom lenses, to match their new xi series cameras. These lenses have a motorized zoom that is controlled either by the camera or the photographer.” … “There are six different Minolta Maxxum Power Zoom lenses:
35-80 f/4-5.6, 28-80 f/4-5.6, 28-105 f/3.5-4.5, 80-200 f/4.5-5.6, 35-200 f/4.5-5.6, 100-300 f/4.5-5.6. In good condition, the image quality of all these zooms is excellent. Minolta was famous for their lens quality, and didn’t start producing cheap plastic kit lenses until years later. The coatings and color balance are superb. I’ve tested each of these on an Sony Alpha A700, and they are all great.”
What you’re paying for here is power zoom, no breathing, constant color and par focal performance. The lens is a bargain if you understand what those qualities will do for your video shooting.
