Sony A7II striptease at Lensrentals: It’s more complex but also more robust!

Roger Cicala from Lensrentals disassembled the new Sony A7II and this are his findings:

It’s not surprising that the inside of the A7II is more complex than the previous A7 cameras. The in-body image stabilization takes up space and adds circuitry. The camera does largely retain its modular construction, but clearly is more complex to assemble and disassemble.
The A7II is clearly more robust than its predecessors, too. The lens mount seems designed to eliminate any wobbling or looseness that was noticed in previous models and the chassis seems stronger.
We don’t see any real increase in weather sealing, except around the battery door, and even that is incomplete. However, it is certainly possible that Sony has such tight plastic-on-plastic seals that they don’t think rubber gaskets are necessary. Like I said at the beginning, though, I’m pretty cynical about manufacturer’s weather sealing claims.

        1. Certain people have developed an inane ability for critique & sarcasm rather then concentrating on improving their own skill-set.

    1. If they’re going to increase the size on the new a7000, I rather prefer living without IBIS. We already have bulky cameras (a7x) and they’re fantastic, but on that segment I prefer a more compact system.

  1. Sealing is as strong as the weakest link. The top of the camera (most likely to get water on) is the least sealed, with the dial not being sealed at all. Very logical

    1. As logical as your reply. Gaskets may not be necessary if tolerances are tight, basic engineering. I think he mentioned this point!

      1. You’re surely not expecting people to actually read something before giving their ill-informed opinions, are you?

    2. I have never shot in the rain without my nice hydrophobia or the simple plastic camera cover every shop seems to sell. Even when using the 5DIII or 1Dc, specs are nice, reality is usually something else and I don’t want to do in the field quality tests wen the nearest camera repair shop is 200 miles away.

  2. Nice camera. Now look at what Canon achieved with their M3. Laughable. Well no, I cant even laugh about it. Actually I find it sad.

      1. The technology was so advanced that the government forced Canon to pull it off the market to avoid an industry wide crash.

          1. Imaging technology so advanced the government feared it would fall into the hands of terrorists and be used against Amerika.

    1. Seriously, I’m awaiting Canon’s answer to the pro mirrorless market. So much that my last two lens purchases were Canon EF mount. Using the Metabones IV on E-Mount until Canon serves up a more stable offering without adapters. I’d switch back to Canon tomorrow if they had a pro grade mirrorless native EOS EF mount body. I’d stay with A-Mount if Sony would support it and give high MP to the a99.

The ONLY thing going to save Sony is the IBIS. That will not be something I walk away from easily. So the jury is out until I see who makes the best pro mirrorless for my needs. Sony better get some high MP and fully articulating LCD on the a9.

Also watching Samsung. Really like the aggressiveness. Would love to see them full frame or something between FF and Leica S2. Bring on that big mirrorless man!

    2. Flashback October 2012: “When Canon releases the APS-C mirrorless sony will be out of business forever.”

I hope you don’t deal in shares, your predictions aren’t very accurate.

  3. Well, positive news but less comments.
So who makes the 400 or so comments on SAR in previous posts?
And why is this site becoming overly commercial.
Between the hits of an SR2 rumor and the Amazon links…one factual post.
