Sigma f/1.8 zooom: Image smaples, MFT, Distortion and Vignetting charts.

MTF chart

Sigma announced that surprising f/1.8 constant aperture zoom. Now you can read a hands-on preview at ePhotozine. And what’s even more interesting are the first image samples posted by Lcap.

We still don’t know if that lens will also be made for A-mount. In the meantime you can analyze the lens performance through those graphs:

  1. Andrea, we do know that this lens will NOT be made for Sony:

in the yesterdays comments someone posted a mail he received from the Sigmas customer Service

On Sigmas webpage you can read:
“Mounts: CA, NI, SA” (SA means Sigmas own mount, Sony would have been SO)

    1. Nope, we don’t know. Sigma got a long history of announcing A-mount versions long after EOS/F/SA mounts were announced. And local branches of Sigma usually will tell you exactly what’s in the press release so I wouldn’t bother with that e-mail one guy got.

  2. Vignetting chart is in fact a Distortion chart, and Distortion chart is in fact Vignetting chart. (@Admin – you got labels in wrong place 🙂 – feel free to delete this comment if you fix it)

    1. Ok, I got it wrong too, but can’t post how it’d be correct because commenting system still breaks post and randomly doesn’t allow anything to be submitted. Tried roughly 10 times, no success.

  3. Kit zoom for the SD1, perhaps? I can’t see much to fault at the centre of the frame, at least. Probably not the ideal lens for landscapes, but otherwise it seems to equate itself very nicely.

      1. As of today, above statement is absolutely correct based on the information made available by Sigma. Sigma may later change their plans, but today it’s valid to state it won’t be available.

  4. Great lens! It hasn’t optical stabilisation, so make “cutted” version for Sony can’t be too hard..maybe they annouce it later. I hope so!

  5. The E-Mount is a growing platform the A-Mount isn’t, we all know this all to well.
As a A-Mount shooter, I’ve noticed over the years that sigma doesn’t always make Sony versions.
As of today, I don’t think Sigma or anyone see the A-Mount as being a growing market and with Sony delaying plans to release new bodies for another year I see little reason for Sigma to get to excited about making lenses for us right now.

  6. COST or TARGET PRICING ???
Has anyone seen target budget numbers for the new Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 ?

Most of the Tamron, Sigma or other third parties only the Sony platform glass last.

If they want to sell glass, it is not in their interest to produce Sony glass, since SONY sales on bodies are so incredibly low, compared to Canikon platforms.

If their new glass model is popular with the market, The Third parties just have to wait out (or Sit and Wait) for SONY who will try to offer them an OEM deal to private label that glass model under the SONY label. Then SONY will try to rip us off by overpricing it. As committed SONY users we are screwed

Maybe Sony pops in a D-AF Dual Autofocus Chip to make their overpriced OEM glass extra proprietary and extra expensive. As committed SONY users we are screwed again.

The Same thing is happening with the TTL Flash technology.
The TTL shoe flash F60 flash is backordered by Sony for 45 days at the Sony online store.

As committed SONY users if we need TTL light, and have work to do.
How are we supposed to get those needs met??

So much for our investments in the Sony Minolta platform.

    AGAIN

Has anyone seen target budget numbers for the new Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 ?

  7. I asked local Sony rep why 120-300/2.8 is never for Alpha mount. He smiled and said Sony would have to sell a lot more cameras for that to happen. They can’t make them fast enough for CaNikon.

I asked if they were still supporting Sony flash units. He said they have new iISO units available now. No word about new shoe support. He promised to send my suggestion up the ladder. Then the counter sales guy interrupted us and said not even Sony supports their own flash mount, and they’ve got two of them now. Why should anyone else? His smirk was answered with uncomfortable silence…

This new Siggy looks great. Way to be bold with lens design. Kudos to you Sigma! Rep said they can’t make enough 35/1.4’s fast enough either. Super hot seller.

But I still don’t get why Sigma let the marketing department ruin it with the whole “Art” “Sports” “Contemporary” lens lines. Why not let people shoot what they want? I would think, hope, that photographers with this level of budget for glass realize they can shoot “Sports” with the “Art” lenses, and “Art” with the “Contemporary” lenses. Or does Sigma firmware prevent that from happening? Clever devils!

    1. “I would think, hope, that photographers with this level of budget for glass realize they can shoot “Sports” with the “Art” lenses, and “Art” with the “Contemporary” lenses.”

They do let people use what they want, sigma just labels it in hopes to sell more. Dont know how well it works but dont care 🙂

I live in a tourist town and, I can tell you with 100% fact a lot of “people” have more budget spent on camera gear then photography know how. I have seen 2 people walking together with a pair of 5D mkIII and 2 50mm 1.2 lens and holding them incorrectly :). I have seen more high end (DSLR) gear from consumers than when I lived and worked as a photographer in a city.

But all of sigmas new lens seem to be what people want – 35mm 1.4, 85 1.4 and 180mm 2.8 now this great 1.5x lens! If I were to redo my lens lineup right now it might end up being the 3 above + nikon 14-24 and 85 PC (I own no sigma lens at this point).

  8. “They do let people use what they want, sigma just labels it in hopes to sell more. Dont know how well it works but dont care 🙂 ”

Chris, I obviously cannot pass judgement on this lens [ no one can lol} but the Sigma 35mm F1.4 in their new “ART” range delivers excellent results even on my D800e which puts a high demand on lenses. It is easily a match for my { now sold } Nikon 35mm regarding image quality though the build is not so sturdy , which is a sacrifice I am willing to make considering it cost half as much as my Nikon 35mm which is itself a little better than the Canon 35mm.

“If “this lens is in that kind of league it could make for an excellent lens for Nikon APS covering for me a very useful range at an aperture that is competitive with primes. The 28-52mm FF equiv is a range I use a lot covering the FF equiv of the 28mm ,35mm ,50mm along with the focal ranges in between.Combine it with the Nikon D7100 { excellent sensor with weak or no AA filter } for an awesome go to kit

  9. Vignetting is massive. See, the chart actually only goes for image height. Continue the lines all the way to the corners, they will be black at 18mm and near black at 35mm.
