RX1rII autofocus hands-on video test. Shipment starts tomorrow.

Federico (Thanks!) sent me the link to that video and wrote:

You should check the following link to a video of Sony’s launch event in Korea, where they allowed video recording of the PPT presentation, where local mkt figures clearly show some interesting data on growth and mkt share, they also show an MTF chart comparison between the fixed 35mm F2 lens on the new RX1Rmk2 vs. an equivalent Leica lens of the same specs, and more interestingly, between the 5:00 and 7:00 minute marks, a hands on demo of the improved AF, where the presenter not only demos how the hunting AF has been improved (he even performs a demo of the issue with the older RX1R), but also how the AF-C uses the 399 phase-detection points for face following.
They don’t demo the AF performance under dark conditions, which is really where I’d like to see it, but it’s pretty good nonetheless.
I recognize the girl from the face-following AF-C demo, she’s in the Mktg Dept. for Cyber-shot in Sony’s Global HQ in Tokyo.
It’d be great if one of your followers would translate the many interesting data on this video that’s in Korean…!!!

P.S.: Dpreview posted a set of RX1rII image samples.

The new RX1RII will ship tomorrow at Amazon US (Click here), Bhphoto (Click here) and Adorama (Click here).

  1. With that music I thought someone with an axe was going to come around from a corner and attack our POV, just so some archers (maybe 1000 of them) behind us will fend him off and the cavalry coming up from behind the canapes.

    ….

On a more serious note, with LCJ-RXH has to be the smartest case Sony built for their cameras. I had tried Sony made cases since NEX 5n and they never offered anything over third party manufacturers and usually were more costly. They also took away your access to the battery and sd card door, which meant you had to take the case out frequently. Now, Sony finally adds battery/sd card door access and, unlike other third party cases, it adds access to the usb/hdmi door whilst still covering that side. THAT is as useful, especially if you have multiple batteries and the camera can become a second charger (if you bought the optional charger) and you will not have to take the case out in order to access that “functionality”.

So, if priced accordingly, it would be a better choice than Gariz or JnK (which is premium priced with no access to battery or side door) and def a better choice than Luigi, whose quality has been going downhill.

Very nice and thank you Sony for providing a proper solution and not just “another thing to sell”, like that outrageously priced hood and OVF.

    1. I agree. 2 objects with punchy colors and harsh contrasts, under a good light, at almost the same distance of the shooter. It can be blazing fast…

    1. LOL. This ridiculous naming seems quite common nowadays.

      e.g. Leica: M3 …. M8, M9 … and now: M (Typ 240), M (Typ 262)
      WTF?

      I already see a Canon EOS-5DsR-MkII coming.

  2. As peevee notes, they really should have also focused on something in the backround, but the focus certainly seems very fast.

I couldn’t help notice that the camera seems to have the a7 setup regarding the ISO control wheel. Having it set to /50/ is usually when I accidentally touch the wheel 🙂 Still love my a7 😉

  3. Is someone able to translate about the selling statistics? Are the figures Value or Number of cameras sold?
    At 2:30 m:s

    At 2:43 174 % 174 % of what?

    At 2.46
    100 % Sony 100 % of what?
    35 % Brand A
    13 % Brand B
    3 % Brand C

  4. It’s a Sony A7Rii that can’t change lenses … If you could only live with 1 focal length though … I guess 35mm would be a good one.

  5. A focus test within a marketing speech. You can definitely trust it. No doubt, advertising never lies.

Nice buffet, by the way. Which the camera guy also appreciated accordingly. Yummy.

But the most impressive part is, that Sony/Zeiss was able to develop a lens that is better than a 20 year old design of the film era. Stunning.
