Jordan from Thecamerastoretv team reviewed the Sony RX100 IV. And in very short he claims this is the best pocketable camera you can get, a dream for videographer and what’s more surprising is that the RAW files show a huge(!) dynamic range improvement you don’t see on the normal JPG files.
And Nauticam announced the new RX100m4 housing. It costs $995 and it will ship…now!

Forgot to mention the 5 minute record limit in 4k? -or did it get cut in the edit?
Everyone always complains about the Sony menus. I don’t find them that bad, but Sony’s are my primary cameras. So if the Sony menus are so bad – then who has the best menus? They always complain, but I never read/hear them say “…be more like this camera’s menus…”
I think it also comes down to the user interface, Panasonic’s menu system is easier to navigate through. Thanks to their touch screens… one can scroll and select through the options much quicker. If Sony added touch screens, I’m quite sure people wouldn’t be complaining about the layout of their menus…. I agree from a layout stand point, they’re no better or worse than the competition!
I find the touch aspect annoying and mostly turn it off. Touch access does not adequately address lack of manual controls.
Depends. I find it quite reliable and I’d rather use it than focusing and recomposing. In situations where it gets tricky then I would prefer manual anyway.
Yes, manual controls are 1st priority.
One of the problems with Sony menus is that they change from camera to camera.
As owner of a900, a99, a77, a77II, a7R, a7II, NEX3n… keeping track of the differences between each menu is often mind bogging. I use all these systems because not one of them can provide best solution for all my needs.
My soon to come a7RII won’t solve that problem, as the EVF will pale in comparison to a900 OVF for studio flash work. It won’t have the battery life, full ergonomic vertical controls, or stable native mount for large telephoto as the a99 does.
The a7RII will provide one solution for me, that being ultimate resolution. I’d much rather have a native Amount, and get rid of all these Emounts and extra batteries/chargers/menus they force me to use just keep up with my competitors that Sony provides better for than their own pro Amount users. I’m sick with Sony inconsistencies and loyalty shifting. Sick with it.
If you take a look at some of the other brands’ forums, you will see that people complain also about Olympus, Fuji, Canon etc. menus. It has much more to see with what people are used to than anything else.
Ive only used Sony, Canon, and Nikon. I absolutely hate the Nikons, they’re confusing as hell. Sony’s organized, but you can’t get around menus fast enough because of the submenus. I hate all the sub menus. Canon is my favorite. Its laid out like Sony, but doesn’t have sub menus, so I can scroll through much faster, but it also has to do with way less features.
“RX100m4 opens “soul photography” frontier with outstanding RAW file capability, miles better than RX100m3, or m2, despite same RAW algorithm used in all three (four)”
I think he’s referring to the Raw capability achieved thanks to the new BSI Sensor. Looking at the comparison he posted the RX100m4 does offer much better range and appears to pull a lot more detail out of the files.
I just made a video of whales and dolphins in slow motion with my RX100m4. I love this little camera. https://youtu.be/miPmW2FuAlQ
Hmm, but can it replace an M43 set up. That’s my question. Nice footage.
For some, why not? But 4k video is limited to 5 minutes of recording, and it really heats up the camera. So maybe it’s not quite ready for primetime.
Thanks! Nice at 1080. Someone below mentioned m4/3, which I also have. Yeah, the latter might have more capabilities (GH4), but the little Sony is a really nice and capable small package. Note: I have m4/3 cameras and lenses and also the RX10 and RX100M3. Will probably upgrade both Sonys.
I wish they did not change form factor every generation. I have RX100M2 and Recsea underwater housing for it, and I will not upgrade the camera for a while lot longer just because I would need a new housing too, which costs as much as camera itself.
There was no change of form factor between 3 and 4.
They didn´t change the body from the RX100M3 to the M4.
But it´s for sure annoying, if you´re coming from an M1 or M2. =/
I fail to see these dynamic range gains. So like, what am I missing here. How are you all making these comparisons? Are we talking 400% crops and taking a look at tonal transition- because if that’s the case I don’t see jack shiiiit. Are we talking taking cityscape pictures in cloudless broad daylight at 12pm?
Look in the video at the face of the person when he brightens it up… Theres quite a large difference.
Pics please. If you got em- share em!
or you can just watch the video so you can see it for yourself.
Oh…err… 5 minutes dream?
Shouldnt be an issue for most people – unless you professionally shoot interviews, performances or yourself blabering for youtube.
Also 5 minutes only applies to 4K video. But IMHO the 1080p120p is the really great feature of this camera.
As far as I understand the 5 min. limit is only in the 4K mode. (In the 1080P mode which is as always also REALLY good you still get 30 minutes.) Though: It also overheats quite easily in the 4K mode. Overall the RX10 II is the better solution (if you´re searching for an “all in one” camera).
Sony have been using consistent menus for several years now. So you’ve got what you want. Why complain about it after the fact?
How can this be such a great video camera if it lacks a microphone jack? I would love to have a super-compact setup, better than my iPhone for “in the street” video blogging. But, not having a simple external mic makes for terrible audio. Am I missing something?
