Image of the A7rII vs A7s by Cinema5D.
Cinema5D posted a A7s vs A7rII ISO (video) comparison (on vimeo here). They write:
– The Sony A7RII is good in terms of lowlight and certainly very good in comparison to many other 4K cameras out there.
– The noise floor of the Sony A7RII vs A7s seems similar, but the footage is cleaner on the Sony A7s.
– In terms of detail the Sony A7s can retain usable quality up into high ISO’s while the Sony A7RII lacks detail much sooner. We start to notice this in the shadow areas around 6,400-10,000 ISO. Shadow areas get washed out and become less usable even on an HD downconversion that we compare to the Sony A7s original as seen in the video above.
A 40 year long Hasselblad photographer finally sells everything to buy the Sony A7rII (SonyAlphaForum).
Richard Banton posted a full A7rII ISO range test shoooting on Flickr and on his blog rickybanphotography.com.
Wayne’s got G.A.S. posted two new A7rII videos on Youtube:

No offense to Fox Talbot or his family.
Thank you for your courage
You’re welcome.
I just wish Sony cameras were made in Germany and built like a tank.
How much are you whilling to pay?

You guys are good for an afternoon chuckle….
A7rll may have a great sensor, but still doesn’t come close to a DSLR in usability. It’s another consumer camera with a premium price tag. It doesn’t deliver quick AF with canon glass and I’m still yet to see good performance with native glass in challenging environments with the likes of Batis 85mm. What do you think?
I think it has the best sensor currently available and a good selection of native lenses. In the hands of a competent photographer the combination will deliver superb results. This talk of it being just another consumer camera is hog wash.
I am a competent photographer and what I see in the AF department doesn’t impress me enough to switch so far. The sensor is stellar no doubt. Lets see more examples.
Then don’t switch, keep your point and shoot and be happy.
Go shoot the Canon with a f1.4 lens and see how accurate it is. Make sure its low light too. Then try manual focus and how impossible it is.
I shoot with Sigma 85mm f1.4 wide open + 5dmk3 in low light – ISO 4000-8000 nails focus no problem. Outdoors its on par with 70-200mm lol, sigma 35mm f1.4 sometimes misses – using smaller focusing AF group fixes the accuracy.
I’m going to reply to this post with titles:
“Commenter says “doesn’t come close to a DSLR in usability”. 12 Year Broken Marriage Wife says A7rII is: “So compelling it gave me grounds for irreconcilable differences”. Jury still out”
So you’re knocking it because of the AF with lenses from another mount and third party? Sigma/Tamron AF isn’t as good as native glass on a CaNikon body either. The AF on the FE 70-200 and 55/1.8 look much better than the Batis. I have the FE 35/1.4 and 70-200, they’re both very fast/accurate on the A7II, the A7RII will be even better. There are lots of tests that show good AF with Canon glass on the A7RII, but that’s a subjective thing as some will say its great and others will call it rubbish.
The eye AF tracking with FE lenses is amazing. The DR puts it in anther league compared to Canon. The newer A7 body is much better from an ergonomic standpoint than the original.
Can we see a7rll tracking capabilities in light that is not limited to day time? Places where you bump your ISO to 1600, 3200 and 6400? I tried a7/a7s/a7r/a7ll with native glass and compared FE70-200 vs Canon 5dmk3 + L 70-200mm ll – Canon is still much faster and more accurate. An out of focus image with great dynamic range is of no use to me. I use flashes to shape the light, but before they go off, my camera needs to be quick enough to lock focus in any condition. I have Canon glass so a7RII abilities to AF with it is important to me, especially since it was advertised to be great at it (clearly not the case)
None of the other A7’s have the same AF capabilities. Judging the A7rII based on the performance of the prior models would be flawed. It appears Sony didn’t flood reviewers with pre-release copies. Now that the camera is starting to ship, we’ll see more samples.
The A7rII will likely never outperform a 5d3 with Canon glass. You’re probably better sticking with Canon.
I agree. The reviews I have seen of a7rii with Canon 70-200 are mediocre at best.

The commlite adapter sucks. The metabones tests are much better.
That’s why. Thank you for the update. would add a7Rll and a7S to my canon gear if it works
Search for Metabones videos, much better. Though it still hunts more than a 5d3.
Today I tried my A7ii with 85/1.8 Batis I received recently and compared it to D750 with 85/1.8g. Both are similarly fast with AF even in dim light (ISO 6400, 1/160, f1.8), in AFS and AFC. Conditions were such that I could only see/guess the outline of the things I photographed within the optical viewfinder. My take-away message was to keep the AF-point of the A7ii within/at the border of the phase detection area. Otherwise AF is contrast only and pumps back and forth all the time. From time to time if no contrast is found it hunts a bit, but never when focusing on the eyes, for example. I will order the Nissin Di700 and try it at our next wedding in two weeks alongside our Nikon equipment. I was pretty surprised that it worked that well. We still will rely on the Nikon equipment which we know in and out, but my confidence on AFC with the Batis increased quite a bit today.
Thank you, that is my point. I didn’t have a chance to try the 85mm Batis yet.70-200 is my bread and butter lens – a7 so far is not up to the task in that department.
70-200 is ours, too. But we always have two cameras each, a 70-200 on mine and 85 on my wife’s, for example, amongst them, when going to a wedding. A7ii is much better than A7 in my opinion. Overall we still rely on Nikon but try to incorporate Sony for specific tasks.
For him low light focusing matters as well. Canikon and A7s does something like -3/-4eV while A7ii does -1 eV. Video optimization on A7ii seems to be lacking as well. Not everything lies in that specification list.
I does not matter if A7S can focus to -4eV if focus speed is as slow as it is on A7S at all
As far as I concern single point AF speed is decent. Tracking is not.
That’s silly. Just on so many levels.
First we need to examine what DSLR usability means to a user. Second we need to see what Sergei takes photos of to determine what his usability definition really or actually means. I recently use the A7 with the 35 f/2.8 and Leica 50 f/1.4 for street. The 35 is wide enough and fast AF enough to get the shot that I need. When light falls I can zone focus very well and I am over 90% accurate. So as far as DSLR usability is concerned it meets my DSLR usability for that use case.
Thank you for your very intelligent approach to the matter. I photograph people for a living: weddings, event, engagement sessions, kids and family, studio work and commercial food photography. http://www.KeeperExpert.com
It’s a combination of both reportage and staged photography where I have control over the environment and don’t, quickly switching between conditions.
1 – Usability: camera that quickly responds to my input (wake up time, lack of lag) no Viewfinder black out or wake up time,
2 – Well balanced – fits like a glove in your hand (easily wotks with both light and heavy lenses)
3 – Reliable AF in all conditions (5Dmk3 has cross type sensors spread out the frame that I can activate in groups or individually),
great battery life – I can go on with one battery for 1500-1700 shots – good for a day worth of shooting or extended period,
4 – Amazing flash system with a METAL/RELIABLE shoe mount – radio controlled, works in Manual and AUTO mode in groups.
5 – Tough as nails and weather sealed.
Dual Card slots and ability to store different formats on different cards,
6 – NO NEED FOR ADAPTERS.
7 – Extremely well laid out menu and buttons that can be operated without looking at them with one hand.
It should be noted that a lot of that is just preference not objective failures of a system. What you find as well balanced is not the same as what someone else finds well balanced. Same for button and menu layouts, usability, toughness (mirrors aren’t especially tough) and so on. What I find unusable is terrible shadows that come out of the 5dmkiii, EVF for me trumps OVF and it’s not even close. I’ve shot in rain and snow and dust with the a7 and never had the slightest issue. Used both sony and canon, and the battery life for me isn’t an issue. On a fast shoot I’ve gotten 700+ shots out of a first gen a7. You can’t put down an entire system that is undoubtedly an incredible system because it doesn’t fit your preference.
I can hardly call E-mount a system yet, although it is getting there. P.S. I do like the idea of a7s for pleasure
Like it or not it is a system. Again, you seem to take your definitions and use them as law. Professional photographers, full time six figure photographers ARE using alphas and are loving the fact that they can actually use non blown out highlights or non disgusting shadows. There are incredibly sharp lenses (not everyone needs to carry around 25 lenses) that cover just everything that they need. You may not prefer it, and that’s fine. It’s ok to not like something but admit that it has great value for those who do. Canon and Nikon make great cameras, but they’ve been really slow to innovate. I love being excited about a company that is trying to do new things, and is doing them very well.
You are right, I was a bit hung up on my use. A7Rll will work great for studio and advertising photographers who print big.
I use a7 and a7s for weddings and plenty of sports stuff with good success. I wish it was as fast as some of the DSLR’s of course, but I still get fantastic results that pay for my bills (plus a new camera..) It suits me well, and the a7rii seems to be a large step up in terms of AF and IQ as well so I’m really excited about it. If I could afford to get a D800 and some Nikor lenses I certainly would. I’d love to have the perfect camera at hand for every individual situation. My son keeps wanting dinner though so it’s not likely.
Do we hug now?
YES, of course. It is always a pleasure to talk to a fellow photographer. I shot with both and have no bias. My personal pick is a7s
Add wedding photography – silent shutter is priceless in a church
5Dmk3 is silky enough in silent mode to be stealthy. A7s is noise free completely – great stuff.
I think some opinions are the results of “Sony put the final nail on Canikon’s coffin” with A7.
No doubt. Sensational headlines are usually not the opinion of the masses. I don’t think Canon or Nikon are going anywhere. My hope is that Sony pushes them into action again. There’s plenty of room for all 3 systems and competition is only going to help us. It keeps innovation happening and hopefully prices lower… Of course they all might just keep raising their prices together.
Another concern troll.
Don’t mean to troll. Simply discussing OBJECTIVE points. Your preferences may be different. I listed mine and explained why DSLR is more versatile and practical. Now your points, please, troll
You’re simply trolling but trying hard to disguise yourself as a legitimate poster. Take a hike Sergay.
My name is Sergei and you are being an ass for twisting it!!!
Here’s my portfolio http://www.KeeperExpert.com.
A7rii is an expensive camera. I’ll take my words back when I see it deliver on the promise of a great AF.
i must admit, i do hate the mis shoe
Point 2 and 6:
Get an underwater-housing 🙂
Well if it a 5D III. You forgot
Constant issues with AF calibration
Can’t see what you are shooting as the light drops
Dim AF points illumination
AF points grouped in the middle
Poor dynamic range and image quality.
Poor low light noise performance.
Most of your other points are generous at best.
DSLRs Blacks out when you shot as well. From the mirror lifting.
Ergonomics are as always a matter of what you are used to.
The A7II is very well weather sealed
Most days I won’t use more than 2 or 3 batteries on an A7. But then again the batteries are half the size. When you shoot on the 5Ds. You will see that it’s battery life is nothing to write home about.
I shoot with FE lenses so I also don’t need adapters…
I have never needed dual slots. So not sure what you issue is there?
Think that is everything..
the meter on the bottom will tell you how much under exposing you are right now. Sometimes I set a deliberate underexpsure and use my light as key and ambient as fill. U.S. There a way to Quickly switch between EVF modes?
Not sure what part of my comment had anything to do with exposure? Not sure why you would need to constantly change EVF modes? but you could include it in the quick functions menu which 90% of what you want to ever change in camera with one button. Shame the canon doesn’t have something similar…
One button and then menu dive (clicking trough options) Canon – if you need to preview your exposure and WB simply go in live view before the shoot and continue in optical mode, no need to see my exposure live all the time.
I shot with a850, a99 and a77 before switching to Canon. EVF has a “free’ mode where it doesn’t reflect my exposure settings (working in low light conditions with fast shutter speed the EVF turned dark) – the light coming from off camera flashes triggered by a remote. HVL 58 flash fell off with an adapter so I bought HVL-60. This flash overheated in 20 or so actuations set at 1/8 or 1/16 power. When I mounted 135mm F1.8 or 85mm F1.4 to catch candid moments I had to revert settings to live – it was a pain. At the time a99 lagged behind and didn’t go off in time in low light (slight shutter lag in RAW mode or firing off multiple frames one after another). I had to sell it. The concept was promising but lacked performance. I loved the idea and still check on A-mount and E-mount development. I understand, that my needs are extreme and as of now traditional DSLRs like 5Dmk3 offer the performance I need. I wish Sony could do it too.
Well yes I keep away from on camera flashes like the plague….but not sure where your issue is with the ‘free’ mode is. It is no more inaccurate or annoying that an OVF? Having to switch the 5D to live view is a pain. It is too low quality to properly check sharps. Has reflections. And on the 5Ds has limited range. Ie. If you move exposure too far the camera will stop showing to exposure change. But not tell you it has gone past its ability.
I agree find what works for you. But don’t give this nonsense that canon is jesus’s second coming. Every format has its advantages and disadvantages. Which is why a dropped canon when the A7 arrived. I still work with Canon for some stuff. But all it has done is confirm that I made the right decision.
I agree. There are uses for both Sony and Canon. I am sure Sony works better than Canon for you.
You have one slot for RAW capture and the other is set to JPEG for rush photo prints or slide show – pop the card out and give to your assistant, your originals are still securely with you
The AF is poor on the Sony in low light. The Sony has poor performance in low light compared to a D750. The viewfinder is poor in low light due to lag. The lens range is poor forcing you to use adaptors to use lenses that are not natively available. The zooms are slow forcing you to use higher ISO in low light. Camera serving issues are appalling. Depending what you are shooting, you lose shots when having to change batteries so often. The weather sealing is poor. Lots of pro photographers use dual slots.
“That shoe doesn’t fit me so it won’t fit anybody else!”
Mmm-kay… :/
There are some DSLRs out there with a good sensor, but still don’t come close to an A7rII in size and weight.
Sounds like a personal problem. Because honestly there is no DSLR on the market that is even remotely close to being as good as an entire package. The native lenses are on another level compared to Canon and Nikon, so Im not sure what you’re talking about by saying “challenging environments”. From what you listed your photography style doesn’t sound that challenging. I only ever travel to locations with my A7R and I have never had an issue with batteries or extra card slots. Buy 2 extra batteries and a 64gb or 128gb card. Also never had an issue with EVF lag and never had an issue with the menus. The really no reason to ever go in them once the camera is step up. There are buttons for everything. Canon and Nikon are literally garbage. Its like using an abacus instead of a calculator. If there were no more Sony I would probably stop taking photos with digital cameras or just get a Ricoh GR.
“The native lenses are on another level compared to Canon and Nikon”. They are on another level indeed. There are no native “standard” zooms like 24-70 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8 for the E-mount at all… 😉 But I hope we’ll see them one day.
Never had a problem with the f4 zooms.
Well, some people shoot the kit zooms and feel happy 😉
Yes the lenses are on another level. It’s just not a very good level. Also take away the auto software correction and that level drops even further.
The 55mm 1.8 and 90mmm Macro are in the top 5 of any lens DXO mark has ever tested. Its worth it alone for those two lenses… Oh yea and every other lens Canon makes.
DxO tests the lenses on the native mounts only, so you can’t rely on them here. Now DxO needs to re-test a bunch of lenses on the 5dsr and the a7r2. I would say http://www.lensore.org is a better choice to compare lenses. The 55 mm and/or the 90mm don’t make a lens system. While not many people need the lenses like the 11-24 or TS, the 70-200 f/2.8 is an essential zoom. 90mm for macro doesn’t sound like too much neither (a 180mm is a better choice for alive insects). The high-end portrait (200 f/2) and sports (300mm+ fast lenses) – none for the E-mount. Any high-end releases from Zeiss (Otus) are also for Canon and Nikon only.
Do you mind sharing a portfolio or a series of images you shot with it – I would like to see what you are talking about, please.
propic.com/Anand (yes more are coming since I just got it)
https://500px.com/anandvyas propic.com/Anand (First pics of A7rii, more this week, but lots of old 5 D Mark iiii and A7s pics). Canon lenses focus as fast as the 5 D Mark III
It simply depends on your usage. In your case, apparently, it is not good enough. But if you shoot landscape, for example, there’s nothing in the DSLR world that comes even close to the capabilities of the a7rII. Should we call all DSLRs “consumer cameras with a premium price tag” then?
So you’re disappointed that a third party lens with a fourth party adapter doesn’t focus well on a non-native camera? And this is said without even seeing some definitive tests. Get help you loser.
We saw teasers and promises that A7rll would work with canon lenses. I was unpleasantly surprised by the tests available online. I agree, I should wait a little longer for more tests. I’m good on my own, but if you are willing to help, I will accept.
The test is out and it focuses amazingly with Canon lenses (except for one or two), as fast as my 5 D Mark III.
The A7R II has a completely new AF system. EV rating for the AF is now -2 EV compared to -1 EV in the A7 II and 0 EV in the A7R. Give it another try, as it seems you are still interested in a Sony.
But it’s a bit stupid to say that it just “another consumer camera with a premium price tag”. The A7 series suits many types of professional work except low light action shots.
I get your point. I was smitten by the video showing poor AF performance and the high price tag made me get emotional. I was a big fan of Sony and perhaps still am. Wish them success.
Quick and reliable AF was never a quality of 85mm lenses. Even the Minolta ones had subpar AF.
Newsflash:
“A7rII photographs aliens! NASA, ESA, RFSA and CNSA confirm only camera can be credited for such feat. All plan for modern space telescopes with multiple Sony cams”
There was really no need to be soo tough, he could have staid with Hasselblad.
This camera would be available to Christmas with a Hasselblad name on it, for 10.000 USD 🙂
come ON! It’s no where near a Hasselblad and Phase One. This dude has only said he is buying a Sony to try it because is tired of carrying the Blad. He has NOT sold all of his Blad gear.
Well, I think in this case he’s on to something. Judging by the type of work he does- it makes sense. Did you take a look at his pics? Also, in the thread- it didn’t mention that he has made a final call on the system yet. He said he ordered it all and will be trying it out. I don’t see where it says he’s made the call.
In the title! ”
40 year Hasselblad shooter sells everything and buys the A7rII.”
Title is misleading. The actual thread- he states no such thing.
Agree – after shooting Hasselblad for 40 years, this guy is at least 60 years or even much older now! At this age, the muscles are getting weaker and weaker :/
Sony is trying to kill photography with this halfbacked bread . Customer are forced to buy unfinished products which are addvertised as stellar. Do not buy A7rII.
I am digging that picture above. One should be the 35mm F2 though. I’m starting to get lens lust for the 35mm. The bokeh is unreal.
I’m waiting for the A7RIII
Not so fast
First sell the a7s
then buy the a7rII
sell the a7rII
buy a7sII
sell a7sII
buy a7III
sell a7III
buy a7rIII
You should be the Sony’s CMO 🙂 Next year they will publish 200% profit increase.
guffaw 😀
Sony a7R II vs a7S vs GH4 rolling shutter comparisons
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6kra9J05E4
I’m surprised that the rolling shutter effect seems better on the A7rII in FF mode rather than S35. The GH4 is better than the the A7rII in both modes. I wonder if it would be possible to employ a firmware update that allows 1:1 pixel 4K mode which would mean utilizing a sensor region 17.38mm wide or just slightly smaller than a 4/3″ sensor meaning a crop factor of just a little above 2x. If this allowed near global shutter performance, would be super useful for fast paced handheld verite shooting style, shots that involved fast moving objects across the field, or fast whip pan.
In my opinion A7Rii in FF mode wins the rolling shutter contest.
2nd, but very close: GH4.
3rd with a big gap: A7Rii in S35 and A7S in Full-HD.
The only explanation why S35 rolls more than FF is, that in S35 there is no pixel skipping and therefore more data has to be read out than in the “skipped” FF mode. This explains also, why S35 has less noise than FF mode.
I am wondering about A7S rolling shutter if 4K mode is used…
I was surprised by your opinion on the GH4 not winning, I looked again… it really looks like to me that the GH4 shows significantly less deflection on the pans than the A7RII in FF mode (best case for A7 series). There could be some other variable in play – but I feel that at least for rolling shutter, GH4 is clearly superior. (but rolling shutter alone should not be the single most important factor – as no one really pans like this in real life).
I first watched the video and paused it again and again, then I wrote my comment, then I read your comment and watched the video again:
Without using pause, I cannot see a clear difference – when I pause it, sometimes GH4 wins, sometimes A7rII. It’s ridicolous: when panned to the left, A7rII wins, when panned to the right GH4.
Looking to a horizontal line of the building, I can see A7rII is mounted oblique – and thottom line, after a 2nd review both cams are quite close, hard to determine a winner with this video.
Aaah, thank you very much, i didnt even think i need an epilepsy attack, but than again, what do i know…
Roll that beautiful bean footage.
Are those cameras kissing? Or gazing romantically into each others lens? Or both?
They hate each other and they are shooting each other, it’s a duel!
Up to ISO 25600, the A7rII in crop mode keeps up quite well with A7S – the difference isn’t as big as I expected. But A7rII is remarkably sharper!
Taking into account that I need for 4K movies also a $2000 recorder additional to A7S that adds some bulk to my equipment, I definitely would go for A7rII for video use-cases. (Not to forget to have built-in electronic 1.5x zoom – very useful for travelling with fixes lenses)
Buh-loody hell, its almost as good as A7S… This camera is it. The end. Sony finished the game.
Andrea, ring me an alarm when it drops to 2000 euros. I want it, but i dont want to go to jail.
Let me start off by saying that undoubtedly I am one of the least experienced photographers who reads this site. But, I have to ask (as someone who has pre-ordered the A7RII and is waiting patiently for it): why do the colors of the still shots I’ve seen from this camera so far look so washed out? Am I just too used to Velvia film simulation on the Fuji X-T1? Most of the still shots I’ve seen so far look so gray and blue, with even reds and warm sunlight somehow ending up grayish. I realize I can push the colors around in post, but still – it seems there is a dramatic difference between Sony and Fuji colors.
Well interesting point. Yes No doubt the colours are not as cranked as the Fuji. But this is a good thing. As unless your are going straight from camera to web or print. You want a file that has a wide dynamic range and room to be graded. Also remember that we don’t know what colour profile these test shots were taken with. The camera. Like all cameras has a choice of colour profile you can shoot with. So for your taste perhaps just shoot with a gruntier profile.
Hope that helps?
Thanks, Gav. Probably just a little nerves from spending the $, but I did notice that many of the shots posted so far, including on the A7RII flickr page, just seemed a little drab. I am looking forward to getting it into my hands and giving it a try, even though I only have one lens for it. Planning a big trip to Africa next year and want to know this camera inside and out long before the trip. Hope Sony comes out with a longer reach lens than the current 70-200 by then. Thanks again for your reply.
Last Sony rep. I talked to a few months ago- she said they purposely do not over saturated their colors like competitors do. I didn’t even ask- although I’ve taken note of it myself. It’s actually what I appreciate about the RAW files in any of my Sony cameras. Same with JPEGS to a lesser extent- they don’t crush the shadows and go crazy with the clarity.
Did you not read his article before posting it? He has NOT sold his Hasselblad system. He has not even got the Sony A7rII yet or even used one. He only has the camera on order.
