The Sony 4K future just started: Sony Z2 can record 4K video. Sony 4K mirrorless camera coming soon

Sony 4K: One of the few certain things we know for 2014 is that Sony will add full 4K video on many of the this year new A and E-mount models. And yesterday Sony announced the new Xperia Z2 (specs here at Amazon) which shoots 4K videos!

Sony 4K camera: And a new Sony 4K mirrorless camera (no SLT!) will be announced in about one month. It will neither have an E nor an A-mount. A-mount cameras with 4K will be announced a couple of months later.

  1. Great. A new mount. That is exactly what we need.

And making lousy quality 4k video on a phone… also awesome.

They led the charge on 3D being the future of consumer electronics. Now 4K. I cannot wait to buy a Sony 4K toaster.

    Bravo.

    1. where do they talk about new mount? mirrorless cameras don’t have to be interchangeable.

Be professional and send your sources please.

    2. It’s not a new mount. Andrea is talking about the prototype with the Pz mount shown at NAB Last year and the definitive version that will be display at the oncoming NAB.
It’s a video camera in dslr shape (probable a f5 guts) hence the Pz mount which is just a screw in mount with pins connectors to adapt a A,E or PL mount.

      1. I can say it’s better than most phones – but overall, we’re seeing a pretty compressed video with a high resolution, poor dynamic range, fairly bad color reproduction, (really bad skin tones). :/

        1. Skin tones and DR are fully besides the point here (and the DR in this video isn’t even that bad for a small sensor consumer camera). The detail is beyond anything any other mobile device or consumer camera comes close to, that’s the point. Despite the compression and extra Youtube compression.

You’re free to point to a non 4K device in this price range or mobile phone that comes anywhere close to this kind of detail.

I know it’s hard to admit to the fact that 4K actually does add something, even if just better 1080P sampling, which is exactly what’s lacking in 95% of current consumer video cameras, especially Sony and Nikon mirrorless and DSLR/SLT ones.

          1. If detail is ALL you want then, sure. But read what you’re writing! “Skin tones and DR are fully besides the point here” then what is the point? For what I record DR and skin tones are at least as important as detail for details sake.

It remind me of the A7R promo material (as well as some of the Sigma posters) at PhotoPlus. Models with what would be perfect skin but you can still see all the pores and tiny hairs from four feet away. Impressive technically but a turn off artistically.

I have no problem with more detail available to me, nor do I think video quality is adequate on most cameras however I don’t think that everything else about an image should be sacrificed on the altar of detail.

  2. So here comes the K-mount. It will in the beginning complement and later replace E mount cameras. A mount will go back to mirror and MF.

    E-mount is dead, dead. dead.

      1. that would actually be amazing..
would love to mount pentax k mount lenses to my mirrorless without an adopter! go SONY!!!! drop e and a mount altogether!

        1. I use many K mount lenses on my full frame VG900 with PK-NEX adapter and a K mount would be great but I think there is zero chance of Sony using the K mount.

          1. I use my K-mount lenses on my NEX as well. Although it’s REALLY HARD to use the 70-200mm F2.8 without any kind of IS… 🙁
(cough cough IBIS already cough cough)

  3. “And a new Sony 4K mirrorless camera (no SLT!) will be announced in about one month. It will neither have an E nor an A-mount. ”

Does it mean they will add yet another mount? Would not surprise me at all. They are that stupid.

    1. Absolutely agree. Its about time Sony Alphas stopped giving us what is effectively upscaled 720p and telling us its 1080p. Its especially sad when all the other features of recent alphas make for great video cameras – its just that awful pixel downsamping method (complete with intentional blur to get rid of moire) that kills the cameras for DSLR video.

      1. It is a shame that the hardware is limited by the software. The full potential of the SLT cameras has never been tapped for video output.

    2. I agree except that Sony is lagging behind in even the 4k arena. I feel the real problem with Sony is trying to protect their broadcast division which even after the effective assault of Canon and RED is still very profitable. I find it very hard to believe the video quality on the A7 is the best that can be achieved with that combination of sensor and processor. The Bionz X is more than capable of handing 4k and/or downscaling like you suggest, because it does it in other cameras. Yet the IQ seems intentionally crippled.

Unfortunate since the A7 is a great stills/motion camera from a usability standpoint.

      1. Sony is lagging behind in 4k? Sony f65? Sony 4k projectors from home to theatre use? Sony 4k video consumer camera? fx700? How is sony lagging behind?

        1. Yes. The F65 is great as are the 4K projects–if you have $50-100k to spend. 4K is no longer the super cutting edge any more. The technical limitations of both 4K and higher quality (10bit, 4:2:2, etc.) 1080P has dropped below the threshold of prosumer/enthusiast/small production companies. Sony wants to continue milking their old business model of selling really high-end gear and really low end gear with severe limitations.

The FS700 is a great camera (as is the FS100) but 4K is pretty clunky and the upgrade pushes the camera into F5 territory (purposefully I believe). Now the FS700 is a “cross over” camera in my mind and that’s excusable but I’d hardly call it cutting edge–at least not for its 4K ability. Canon’s 1DC is in many ways a more compelling solution if all you want it 4K. Once you add the cost of the upgrades the FS700 ends up more expensive.

The consumer camera is interesting. Mostly because it proves that Sony has the tech to implement 4K in more devices but refuses to for protectionist reasons and in the end that could cost them. If the Bionz X can handle 4K in the handy cam why not the RX10? Because competition in the RX10 market place will drive the price down much faster! Even with 4K implemented the RX10 would be considered by many “overpriced” for a bridge camera, whereas the handycam is considered a “steal”.

Innovative bridge projects are threatening to Sony but they are largely the present and future push of technology. I think Panasonic really got it right with the GH4. Sony clearly has the ability to create something similar but they haven’t. Hopefully they’ll prove me wrong at NAB.

      2. Red and canon have not affected them much for broadcast (sports, live events, etc.). Red has taken market share in movie production – but some of that share came from 35mm film. The arri Alexa has done this as well.

Hopefully this a-mount shaped FZ Camera will be the first synergistic product between the alpha & video departments.

    3. A gimmick if you’ve been living under a rock the past half year.
4K actually allows for much more video resolution for mobiles too, see Note 3 samples.
And on top of that, it allows for (faster read out, larger bandwith, better downsampling) exactly what you’re asking for, much better 1080P output. See again Note 3 1080P output.

  4. “It will neither have an E nor an A-mount.”

Sony’s answer to Samsung NX mini? More systems the merrier!

Will it be called Alpha-xyz or ILCE-xyz?

  5. Yawn, total gimmick. Crap like this is just The Matrix. The world pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth that they’d rather crank out features that don’t matter rather than focus on stuff that does, like truly functional battery life.

    1. The true Nex7 Replacement? I’m still a bit disappointed by the fact of no real nex7 successor, A6000 is a great camera, but I belive it justs replaces Nex6 and I still find there’s a huge gap inbetween A6000 and A7/R (more than 500€ from an economic point of view) I belive that a boosted A6000 with some more pro controls and features would be nice with a bit more FPS, and same AF and improved EVF.

    1. 4k is resolution and resolution ain’t gonna go away anyday. 3d is like an added feature. 4k will prevail, 4k is the future

      1. actually 8k is the future. Japan is actually talking about skipping 4k because they already have 8k systems and camera near production ready in a time frame that will squish into the 4k role out enough to cause a cost problem in manufacturing.

        1. of course it is, then 16K after that. But, 8K isn’t coming to the consumer/Pro market for a LONG awhile IMO. Production sets, probably in the next few years, but most people don’t have the money to properly handle that kind of workload.

          1. even if they skip 4K, they have to actually produce 8K, then it has to trickle down. and currently there are only a few cameras that *could* shoot 8K. and are 50k+
So I think that just confirms what I said.

          2. Like I said, it will be a few years for 8K to trickle down into the working pro market and will only be used in high production work. At least for a few years.

      2. You mean like 1080p was the future but most television is still standard definition?

People aren’t about to throw away their 1080p televisions because of 4k, they were burnt by “HD-Ready” when manufacturers suddenly released “Full-HD”, you think they are all going to rush to replace their Full-HD TVs with 4k? Don’t be silly.

        1. “but most television is still standard definition”

If you live in the wrong country maybe…

Here all the new content is 1080.

      3. 4K and 8K recording is great for movies. 4K TVs are a scam because very few human beings can distinguish 1080p from 4K on a 60 inch screen at 8 feet. Even at 6 feet the difference is very minor. Paying hundreds of dollars extra for the ability to walk up to the a freeze frame and examine it is silly when you can pause and zoom. So EVEN if TV is broadcast in 4K, almost the only use would be freeze and zoom for sports. Much more interesting to me is if the new 4K recording means we will get consumer devices that use all the pixels on the sensor when generating full quality 1080p.

          1. I’ve looked at it in stores. It looks great until you move back to a normal viewing distance and compare to 1080p. Of course, standing in front of the TV the way you might normally in a store, it looks fabulous. The problem is that the human eye can’t resolve that difference at normal viewing distance. Your experience may be different off you have great eyesight or like to sit very close to a large screen TV. It could also work on high resolution desktop monitors that have 4K and are only about 2 feet from your face.

          2. This is a specious argument. People have no problems differentiating 1080p once they go back to something worse.

Furthermore, many people do not properly place their seating at the right distance from their screen. At correct distances, it’s easy to tell the difference unless you’re blind. In case you don’t know, the correct seating distance is 1.5 * the diagonal of your screen.

Home theater installations continue to grow in popularity and 4k will be very attractive to them.

          3. Er… you just said that on a 60 inch screen people differentiate 1080p from 720p at 7.5 feet. In other words at 8 or 9 feet, 1080p may have no advantage over 720p. So why do I want to go over 1080p? I’m not going to move my seat up to 5 feet viewing distance on a 5 foot TV.

          4. I found studies that say viewers can detect the difference on a 55 inch 4k at 9 feet, but care a lot more about what the black point is. That is, at 9 feet the 1080p set with a darker black is perceived as a better TV than a 4K TV with an average black point.

          5. Then you aren’t serious about home cinema and you don’t care about any of this so why are you even participating in a discussion about it?

Anyone serious about home cinema will have their primary seat 90″ away from a 60″ tv. It’s a very comfortable viewing distance and is required to give anything near approximate the angle of view expected by the people who made the movie in the first place.

    2. Wrong. 3-d requires a movie to be shot stereoscopically or go through a time-consuming / expensive conversion in post. It also requires the viewer wear clunky glasses, had competing formats and causes some viewers discomfort.

All film & tv shot on 35mm can be scanned to 8k resolution. Super 16mm can be scanned to 4k. Digital productions have been shot at 4k and above for a couple of years. Red cameras can shoot at 6k. The content is already in place. Blu-ray supports 4k. The ps4 supports 4k. A viewer does not have to wear anything or be inconvenienced by watching 4k. It is inevitable.

      1. Reality check, the vast majority of consumers aren’t using 3D and aren’t using 1080p. They aren’t going to be using 4k either. Just another gimmick.

        1. The vast majority of consumers (>60%) here is already watching regular cable TV in 1080P….

4K will allow them to have better 1080P too.

          1. They are watching SOME 1080p and now 4k comes along. People aren’t going to bin their 1080p TV for 4K. Ain’t going to happen any time soon no matter what the geeks here think.

          2. In a few years, the average TV will be 4k capable, whether you like it or not. It will be ubiquitous like retina / high DPI device displays. Non-geek consumers tend to like those (as the apple & Samsung sales numbers would suggest).

          3. You can speak for where you live, the majority of digital cable TV broadcasts is full HD where I live and the vast majority is watching digital cable TV on a 1080P capable device by now…

        2. I see you wrote 1080p specifically. The majority are watching HD (1080i, 1080p and 720p). Unlike SD to HD, this is a seamless transition for viewers. Unlike 3D – higher resolution, color fidelity and sharpness are not gimmicks.

Have you viewed 4k content on a 4k television?

  6. Come on, Sony, what’s up with all the new cameras and lenses, when in fact we all need more new mounts!
The last new mount you introduced was 5 years ago!
    Mounts are dead dead dead

  7. Niether A nor E mount? I have no idea what that means but what I hope it is not is a new interchangeable mount that is incompatable with A or E mount lenses.
Hybrid would be good but dont know if they are ready to release the hybrid yet.
Sony has been talking about a surprize and this could certainly be one.

    1. Sony will release the mirrorless-format H mount. This mount will be APS-C for focal lengths below 35mm and full frame for 35mm and above. It will not fit on any current E mount bodies with less than 24MP, but will work with E mount bodies above 24MP if there is OSPDAF only.

The new C mount will be introduced for SLR-form-factor cameras with 4K video, and will be compatible with any A-mount camera with a top LCD screen, but not those with out. This may or may not be described on the website.

At THIS time, with the H mount and the C mount launched… the lens mount system (A-C-H-E) will be ready to take the market by storm and give its customers a HeadACHE.

      1. Thank you for cleating up my partial confusion..now I am totally confused.
I will just wait and see if this meets my needs or not.
Unless this is the 32 mp C or a stacked 54mp sensor it probably wont be the camera I get…but I am keeping an open mind.
The inexpnsive 32mp c a mount is most likely what I will get next and then wait for the new sensor tech for ff.

        1. It will not meet your needs. The FZ mount is primarily for video / motion picture lens use. The best resolution for 4k is approximately 8 megapixels for full pixel readout. If it is like the canon 1d-c in features & quality than the price may be close to 10k – which is still a good price compared to the Sony f5 / f55 cameras.

    2. See the Sony F5/F55 for information on the FZ mount. This is the mount shown on the nab 2013 prototype with a-mount adapter.

  8. Any word on an eventual FS700 replacement? I’m thinking of getting an Odyssey 7Q for the 4k recording, but i’m holding off for a bit in case of any announcement around NAB of a new, less expensive video camera. I have many E-Mount lenses, so i’d be looking for some good (not this iphone) 4K video on E-Mount. OR… maybe i should hope the FS700+7Q is the best option for a couple more years!

  9. No details and confirm news at all. It just like guessing sony will have 4k built in to their New A and E mount camera because sony phone realese it.

Sony 4k camera will neither have an E nor an A-mount also base on prototype shown last time. It is likely put adapter for A-mount lenses. That mount should be FZ mount like f5/f55 or PL mount.

If it is confirm news it will be putting more spec and details out instead of only basic common sense information.

Anyway i hope 4k is not full frame sensor but aps-c(more chance to having read every pixels in video like rx10 did and can avoid the muddy video quality that most of the sony camera facing.

  10. “A-mount cameras with 4K will be announced a couple of months later.”

So what happened to A-mount A79 in March? Is that still on track? Or being pushed back….. again.

      1. Or maybe admin was spreading trash so you’d come to his site again and again.. Seriously, only promises about new info recently, but nothing concrete.

        1. I don’t blame the site admin…. I think there is confusion caused by Sony. I do not believe they are intentionally spreading misinformation in order to eventually launch a big surprise.
I think it’s just that Sony executives themselves have become confused between the A and E mount. Just look at the Sony websites confusing recently whether E-mount has IBIS, confusing which lens goes with which mount.
A couple months ago, a Sony executive was quoted as saying, “Our commitment to the A-mount will be apparent very soon” —- I’m willing to bet the executive was referred to the “A”5000 and “A”-6000.
Sony has been merging the A and E stuff in their marketing, on their website and in the naming. Feels like Sony now simply considers “E” to be “A.”
Feels like Sony is saying, “oh.. we aren’t going to keep using that old Minolta mount anymore for new cameras, but we are still making “A” cameras and they can use the older lenses with adapters”

We’ll see…. but how many times can the A79 SR5 rumored announcement be pushed back before we start to seriously suspect it’s never coming?

    1. On the other hand, less line skipping / down sampling is necessary to get down to 4k video resolution ( it’s about 8 megapixels ).

    2. Check the Note 3 4K samples on youtube. Not only do they blow most consumer cameras away in terms of detail at 4K, the 1080P output is also far better than anything in its class due to quality sampling.

  11. ” And a new Sony 4K mirrorless camera (no SLT!) will be announced in about one month. It will neither have an E nor an A-mount.”

Admin, would you please clarify this statement?

Are you stating that this mirror less camera will have an interchangeable lens mount – such as the prototype from NAB last year (a-mount body with FZ mount + a-mount adapter)?

        1. There are already handycams based on the RX10’s internals that do 4k. An RX10 variation that did 4k wouldn’t be far fetched. It would be a little early to announce an RX10 mk. II but I guess the RX1R came out less than one year after the RX1 so who knows…

  12. With all this talk of 4K what I’d really like is a firmware upgrade for the A7 then would enable a crop sensor mode like what is available on the F5/55 with their new high-frame rate S16 mode. I’d like to be able to use a S35 sized area on the sensor that is downscaled instead of down sampled to 1080p. This would be fairly simple since that area on the sensor is right around quad-HD which would yield either 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 output depending on how the bayer pattern is decoded. This could be written internally (awesome!) as a variation of XAVC or outputted through the HDMI. I’d only need 24P which should be very possible to pull out of a sensor capable of scanning at least 60 fields a second over a full frame!

I would pay for such an upgrade. Even something on the scale of the 4k upgrade for the FS700!

    1. I’m right there with you. I’d thought they’d rolled out 4K the the a7s when the AX100 came out, as they’re running the same processor.
But someone posted awhile back they tried but it caused overheating problems, idk if its true or not though. They could just be trying not to kill there FS100 sales, which is already not worth the price IMO.

      1. Possibly but the limitations of the codec and the poor quality of the image in video to me justifies thinking that it is a marketing/protectionist issue.

  13. 4K is almost completely irrelevant at consumer and much of professional levels. The computer power needed and data volumes created have become far too burdensome.

To see how data transfer rates are a real world issue, just watch most live TV news reports. Many are done at the most dreadful mobile phone level of quality because there is simply no other way.

Fine for top quality programmes and films, but for general use, it is a ludicrous proposition. Almost like fitting Formula 1 engines in every car: great for the once in a lifetime you want to race around a track, but for every other day of your life it would be a disaster.

    1. That’s what they’ve said about computer too – things like nobody needs more than 600 something kb of memory. Let’s see if this 4k trend last.

        1. Increase in data is greater indeed, codecs are about twice as efficient now, data has quadruppled compared to 1080P. But hardware hasn’t been standing still either, even the lagging (in storage size for one…) micro SD cards have finally move to 128 GB.

    2. Not really. Well let’s say they update the A7 with 4k. Probably most people will learn how to use proxy files then, and thanks to that, the final export from 4k to 1080 will be superb. Or at least give us 2,5 k.

  14. I find it interesting Sony can get 4k to work in a smartphone but they ran into overheating problems with the new FE bodies. ;^)

I may be crazy but I don’t expect rapid consumer adoption of 4k.

  15. MORE BATTERY MORE BATTERY MORE BATTERY MORE BATTERY MORE BATTERY MORE BATTERY MORE BATTERY MORE BATTERY MORE BATTERY MORE BATTERY MORE BATTERY MORE BATTERY MORE BATTERY MORE BATTERY MORE

YEA ..its like spam ..but maybe some egghead would see this and get it that in 2014 all the gadgets u can think off and put in a phone are useless if you are playing “catch the next charging point” whenever u step out of your home .
the fact that you need to care for your phone all the time like that is a poor evidence of all the smartphone companies tech skills

      1. actually i hold an MA in computer science and my speciality may be server side and not UI but you tell me how is it good that a 10 year old phone can last days while these do not last 12 hours. even ultrabooks now have in some cases trippled the actual battery life compared to old notebooks …yet somehow in the world of smartphones you seem to be getting less and less battery life ..especially from the higher end highly priced phones .
and thank you for making it so personal ..so mature

        1. A 10 year old phone doesn’t have the features or processing power of a modern smartphone. The capacity of batteries has not changed significantly in that time. Yes, I would like to see higher capacity batteries in smartphones, and I think the trend to make everything slimmer is ridiculous, but so is your comparison..

          1. I agree on slimmer trend, but disagree on battery capacity.
There are plenty of new technologies that outperform Li-Ion. The first one that comes to mind is Li-Polymer Li-Ion battery. Where a porous polymer separated cathode and anode gel. Then there’s Li-Cobalt type Li-Ion battery, which has a very high energy density.
There are plenty of new developments. Some are just either not safe enough yet or are under active R&D. The problem with batteries is that there are only a select few companies that make them, and even if new technologies are available, they’re not exactly rushing to implement them.
But yeah, the worst trend is slimmer = better, in which case the first affected component is the battery.

        2. Shouldn’t it be a MSc not MA?

Also my Samsung Note III lasts at least a day of decent use before needing a recharge. It recharges fast too. Just saying it’s better than 12 hours.

        3. I’m not defending poor battery life, I’m criticizing your comment for calling people eggheads. How is that…immature?

    1. The Z1 should have much improved battery life over the Z which I own, which doesn’t last very long on a single charge. Reviews say that the battery life of Z1 and Z1 compact is quite adequate.

      1. My z1s lasts for avg 1-1.5 day. I went to central park in winter with my phone fully charged in the morning, took more than 50 pics, left at 4 in the afternoon, the phone still has 30% juice in it. The battery is very very good, it outlast my wife’s samsung 4s.

    2. You guys do release that all Xperia phones have battery saving setting called Stamina mode which drastically extends battery life…Unless you spend you day using it to scope forums…..

  16. People forget that some of Sony’s higher end video cameras use the PL mount. If they can come up with a high performance 4k camera in that mount, it may mean that more affordable, more accessible E/FE/A mount cameras that support 4k will be coming soon.

    1. The camera at NAB was FZ mount, which supports A mount and PL. I’d be willing to guess this is going to hit the 4-6K price point and replace the FS100.
My guess is no built in NDs, only 24/30P in 4K, only HDMI out, and only XLR with the adapter.

Doubt it’ll be stills, probably the same sensor out of the FS700

    1. And the point is? Sony released a high end consumer grade camcorder that uses the RX10 sensor (and shoots 4k video) for under $2000 (with the lens). It may not be the GH4, but then again the BlackMagic 4k box is $3000 and it’s quite good (from what I have read).

      1. Format factor, capabilities. GH4 can make nice still photos and make 4k video. Camcorder is dedicated only for video (try to make photos with “video grip”, it is not very handy). BlackMagic is far from being usable without rig. Panasonic is pretty versatile. Maybe Sony makes A6000 with 4k video.

      1. Good luck with managing focus with Full Frame 4k video. You must hire experienced focus puller for this purpose.

  17. “‘Sony 4K: One of the few certain things we know for 2014 is that Sony will add full 4K video on many of the this year new A and E-mount models. And yesterday Sony announced the new Xperia Z2 (specs here at Amazon) which shoots 4K videos!”
Are you saying that we are going to have a firmware update ? On a A7r ?

  18. Funny, 4k in A-mount. You would think that Sony would have to actually release an A-mount body for that to happen, and that isn’t going to happen. Firmwere update? Ońly in alternate evil Sony universe.
    Dan

  19. OH YES. 4K res’ worth of blurry shitty footages with artificially sharpened details. (The phone)

I can’t wait. I’m literally shitting my pants.

  20. > “And a new Sony 4K mirrorless camera (no SLT!) will be announced in about one month. It will neither have an E nor an A-mount.”

Err…. if it is not E mount (or A mount), what the heck is it?

I’m going to take a guess this new 4K camera will have a Sony FZ mount, or maybe maybe a PL mount.

Possibly a Sony FS-100 replacement I hope, as the FS-100 is getting a bit long in the tooth.
