  1. I wish they had made the a7 series grip like this.
No silly fake battery. That would allow three batteries at once instead of just two…

    1. I agree. Especially since the A7 charges in camera the third batter “trapped” in the camera body would not have been a big deal. Oh, well.

    1. Or they will simply abandon the A-mount completely… Yeah they claim that isn’t going to happen, but if it were do you think they would announce it before dumping all the inventory? I can easily see a future announcement of due to cost saving measures we have decided to drop the A-mount in favor of the E-mount/FE-mount… just wait.

      1. Must explain the recent rapid rush for Sony to discount new e-mounts like pre-orders on the a5000, a7, and a7R. They’re abandoning the e-mount too! Let the Sony m43 rumors begin!!! ;^)

      2. You really need someone to review your comments before you post them, cause your sounding a little off today.

They’re discounting the old models, because the new models will be available soon.

  2. Sony’s got the pricing right. Hurray.
Now if they only work on their customer relations. I’m talking COMMUNICATION. Announcements, firmware updates, lens roadmaps(!!!) and so on. This is clearly a new territory for Sony. Camera system is a long time relationship. Both sides need to commit. Sell and ditch does not work here, no matter how good and cheap the product.

    1. Yep… Sony has been using a model closer to Apples where you have to dump all your stuff and buy new every year… They need to use a Nikon/Canon model where the lenses from one year work for the next decade.

  3. hmm an a99II on the way? im a happy a99 owner, but i need a second body – or maybe an a99II together with my a99 🙂

  4. They need to make an affordable A-mount FF-camera now. It could really make a difference in sales. One flagship and one affordable enthusiast-oriented camera and it could attract more people to A-mount. Of course the next problem is the lenses, which are still too expensive in many cases. The premium for the A-mount 70-200 f2,8 compared to other brands is not sensible. If they need that price to make Money, they should find a way to manufacture it cheaper.
I have left A-mount for E-mount, but I think that Sony needs both systems. At least until a hybrid-mount camera becomes available (if ever).

    1. The A-Mount’s story has only just begun, now that they’re transitioning away from the consumer products division to the professional side of Sony’s imaging division.

  5. And so it begins. I’ve been waiting a long time for this. Should be no more than 1600 by itself at this point. I will wait, but I know the value is about to drop like a rock. By the end of the year I’ll finally get my a99 for a REASONABLE price.

  6. I think we’ll see further discounts as the year progresses. No way this thing goes back to 2600. Time for the sky to start falling until the amazing a99 successor comes out. It’s not over yet, year of the alpha soon enough!!

  7. Hi Andrea!
So A99II around the corner. Any rumors about SSM versions of ZA 135mm f1.8 or 85mm f1.4? Please:-)

  8. Sony’s market share in DSLRs is a mere shadow of Canon’s or Nikon’s. If Sony were to spend the money for a prestigious McKinsey or Bain consultant to study the camera market, what they would get back would be a recommendation that it is nuts to compete against an entrenched duopoly like Canikon DSLRs with a similar product. In the A7(r), Sony has a unique product. That’s where they should focus investment. Create a dual-mount camera so A-mount owners don’t feel stranded, but put the pedal to the metal on E-mount mirrorless models.

Since I just saved Sony a huge bundle on consultant fees, if you are reading this, Sony-North America, please send me a new A99 as a token of appreciation. 🙂

    1. No, I don’t think so. Sony can absolutely compete in the pro market because they are releasing more innovative products at a faster speed than the other giants, as seen from the pace that E-mounts are going recently. With the capability to pack so many in such a small package, can you imagine the potential for their top tier cameras?

I disagree that Sony should abandon A-mount for E-mount. E-mount is doing exceptionally well so far, there is no need to invest more into it (unless it’s new tech for both systems). It’s a wiser move to transfer all that hype from E-mount to the A-mount now. In the end, Sony is more profitable if both pro and casual tiers of users get access to the most up-to-date techs Sony has to offer.

We shall see when they finally release their A-mount counterparts, I predict with confidence that Sony can shake the competition. There’s nothing nuts about going against Canikons, they should have even more capital now to invest in both camera systems since they discarded their TV and PC business. Remember, we want fierce competition, because that benefits us consumers 🙂

      1. Peace, if you Google “duopoly” you will find lots of examples. It is known to be very difficult to gain market share against an entrenched duopoly. There’s what you and I might want from Sony as consumers, and then there’s business reality as faced by Sony. If you look at the Amazon DSLR sales list, it’s really extraordinary. Of the 30 top cameras, 29 are Canons or Nikons! That is amazing dominance. There is one Sony DSLR (#17 today) and that’s the A3000, which is being dumped at fire-sale prices. Meanwhile, look at the DPreview rankings for the A7(r). Sony mirrorless is on fire; Sony DSLR is on fire sale.

I’d still like that A99 in return for all this valuable market analysis I’m dispensing here. 🙂

  9. How is this a deal? They had the body/flash/grip for $2800. Now this is less and the flash is $549.
