(SR4) NEX-7n could be the only NEX or A mount camera ot come this year.

I know it sounds surprising but the change is big that the NEX-7 successor may be the only interchangeable camera to come this year. This means no other NEX or Alpha camera will be announced. As I told you many times before the new Sony CEO is pushing to release camera with game changing tech rather than small updates only. That’s why the A77 successor and two SLT-FF have been taken off the roadmap.

In short, in 2014 we will have new A-mount FF cameras, new NEX-FF cameras using new viewfinder and new sensor tech. I know it’s a long time to go but I hope to get some info about the new roadmap soon. I may can entertain you a bit while you are waiting for the big 2014 news 🙂

By the way, I don’t know what the new sensor tech could be. But I saw plenty of patents with “Foveon alike” sensors (See Sigma DP series). That would mean, true 100% color info for every single pixel, no AA filter and bigger pixels (or more Megapixels). Yep, that would be a hell of a sensor!

P.S.: The RX series will be extended. Ther eis no delay here!

  1. A NEX-7 with a multilayer sensor would get my money, unless there is some big drawback such as much lower ISO speeds.

    1. Ok it might be slower but so what.
A stacked sensor would be a great tool.
I own more than one camera as do most of us.
When I do need my fastest camera I will use it but usually I shoot in good light.

      1. If you look into it .Its a sensor that produces bad ISO as the light has to travle thro 3 layers of sensors .Add that to a STL Mirror were talking a full light stop .

        1. Hmm I see your point, but I was talking about a sensor like this on the nex, lol. Also, foveon sensors may lack high-iso capabilities (you know what I mean, lol), but this could very well be sigma lacking the engineering prowess that sony has when it comes to sensor technology. Maybe sony can give us a foveon-like sensor with elements that make their bayer sensors great – dynamic range, high-iso, great shadow/ highlight recovery abilities, etc. A person can dream, right? lol

  2. History tells us that Sony are usually big on promises and short on delivery. I wouldn’t get too excited about 2014.

    1. Sony is a ship without a rudder, its buried in debt and management thinks “game changing” $25,000 4k TV’s are the future. *facepalm*

Its the worst of both worlds. No new cameras means the brand will fade into Pentax territory when new OMD’s, Fuji X’s, the new big sensor Nikon mirrorless and the new EOS M are introduced this year – along with the new high MP Canon camera, the 70d, 7d Mark II and so on.

That combined with Sony’s lack of support for its existing customers ensures the Alpha mount will fade into obscurity and Nex will lose all momentum. I’m keeping my Nex5n+18-55 for 60p video and legacy glass, but I’m not buying another Sony camera until its time to replace the 5n with another one on the cheap.

Its the same on the video side with Blackmagic pulling the rug out from under the FS cameras with a 4k cam that’s cheaper than the 4k upgrade in the FS700 (not counting the price of the actual camera). Like others posted, Sony brought nothing new to NAB.

      1. Comparing the BM to the FS series, is like comparing a Porsche 911 to a souped up GTI. They may both be fast but that’s about the only thing they have in common.

    2. Sadly, I might have to agree with you; there is no promise for 2014
It is not possible for a company not to release “newer and better” and remain competitive

  3. Hi all, to be honest I`m getting tired of delaying new Sony stuff due to “tech improvements” or whatever excuse; so far I haven`s seen too many of them and none of them was a game-changer. How Canon / Nikon / Olympus manage themselves to stay ahead of others (at least in terms of sales)in their segments while not bringing any “extra super new” technology in their cameras ? Sony should learn …

  4. I kinda like this. It also may aspire many Sony users to go out and shoot, more than drawl about tomorrows cameras.

    1. I totally agree. Since we have good enough cameras already, maybe Sony could do some firmware changes. That would help a lot (especially NEX-firmware).

    2. Another guy who agrees here! Unlike the trad A-mount whiners (who nags for everything related to delay), I welcome the delay of coming E-mount cameras if it means they will provide new and improved tech. I really like the new Sony strategy of ditching incremental improvements and focus on actual technical evolution. Go Sony!

        1. And still they can choose from way more lenses then the E-mount….

I think it is wise to stop launching new camera after new camera without real improvements. It is way better for the price we can get for the second hand Sony cameras for a longer time.
I still own the A700 and the original Nex 5, they still take great pictures…

        2. There has always been a lot more A-mount lenses than E-mount. Considering the success of the NEX- and RX-series, it makes perfect sense that Sony puts more focus on those.

          1. You are missing the point by a wide mark. You said:

“Unlike the trad A-mount whiners (who nags for everything related to delay), I welcome the delay”

A-mount user nag because they have been WAITING FOR YEARS for a system.

          2. Every A-mount lens is also an E-mount lens (via LA-EA1/2 adapters) and so are many other lenses from other manufacurers. No E-mounter should be complaining about lack of lenses!

          3. LOL, and so the whining continues!

E-mount people waited for huge holes in the lens map to be covered, A-mount waited for upgrades and alternatives of existing lenses (from Sony, Minolta, Sigma, Tamron, Samyang etc…). Who’s missing the point?

And don’t come with that “all A-mount works on NEX with an adapter junk”. Not that I personally mind using adapters and large SLR lenses, I do it all the time. But there are lots of people who want smaller fully automated native lenses for the NEX cameras.

I shoot both A- and E-mount, and I definitely want Sony to keep both these systems alive and kicking, but I am truly fed up with all the “demands” and “requirements” the A-mount people keep burping on every site I see.

    1. When they say the NEX-7N will release in the summer of 2013, that means it will come out one day before FALL.

  5. Thanks for the infos. What do you mean by “the RX series will be extended”? Any news on the RX10? Would love to see a RX10 in the near future 😉

  6. Anrea, any info on what the rumored A77 firmware will bring? I assume that the only chance for Sony to keep the A77 selling until the new cameras are ready is to make signifficant improovements to the A77 via firmware.

    1. Firmware updates will not increase sales. There will not be a significant firmware update that fundamentally changes the A77, just a few minor tweaks/bug fixes.

Regardless of firmware versions, the original reviews and forum complaints about the A77 being slow and buggy still stand and it is these that people will read and buy the shiny new Nikon badged D7100 over the “old” and “Sony” A77.

      1. Well, not sure if you own one – I do own an A77 and I can not say its buggy. It actually performs quite well. However, there are still many ways to improove it. Clean HDMI out, video with more fps for a short period of time etc. Also, I do believe that certain features are simply software locked and can be released by means of new firmwares. Many Samsung LCD TVs can simply be upgraded in functionality by going into their service menu and changing the TV ID, as the components inside are in many cases identical to the higher end models. So I do believe that there is still way more to get out of the A77 firmware. See Canon 7D for example – major improovements years after the camera was released – for one simple reason – the successor of the 7D was delayed and in order to keep it selling, they had to put a bit more functionality into the firmware.

  7. :'( This is sad…Sony needs to keep up with the competition…The D7100 got realse this year and maybe the 7d mark II will too….Sony FANS need the A78 even if it has small improvements…New hot shoe, Better Buffer, No crop-crop video, more recording time, like a frame more of shooting, and if it shoots raw like the new blackmagic pocket camera it would be great!!! and a game changer!!!! fucking new ceo. well, this is my opinion ….

    1. CaNikon release dates for mid and high range cameras hasn’t been that quick, so Sony falling in line with them is a sound strategy, because despite the noise on the web, most camera users are a pretty conservative lot and don’t change camera much, unless there’s a big new tech breakthrough (e.g. 5D enhancements between the last two revs).

Only real casualty of slower releases will probably be the admin of SAR 🙂

  8. It’s a sad thing to read – they should make more smaller changes the same way the canikons do. Sony’s got to react and quickly. Sony cannot try to do the same as with the a900/a850 – and a700 – leave a gap for years and then wonder why the 15% market share drops to 7%. Customers stay loyal if model ranges keep on following even with only small incremental updates…
Look at what canon and nikon do – produce low-end camera’s almost for nothing – lure them into the brand, and sell ‘m very expensive pro-material afterwards (consumers are sometimes a bit unpredictable but this works, the other way around doesn’t).

    1. A78 Redemption

Phase detect off sensor .No mirror or stl .= Better ISO . (No sloppy j pegs )
      Swivle touch screen .
A and E mount . As a result of no SLT in the way .
3rd party supportes make Eos Nikon converters making it a perfect backup cam.
      Wifi
      12 Fps (larger buffer)
      3XBattery in grip
      Hot shoe (Universal)
      Buit in flash

Come on Sony you can do it …You have to or we will all be stuck with two companys dragging their heals with inovation as thy have all the glass ; (

      1. @Puretide:
        > A and E mount . As a result of no SLT in the way .
        > 3rd party supportes make Eos Nikon converters
        > making it a perfect backup cam.

Due to flange/registration distance, Nikon’s F-mount & Canon’s EF-mount, as well as Sony’s on E-mount, are impossible to convert to A-mount unless you use a glassed adapter (or a full-conversion), with associated loss of IQ. 🙁

  9. ADMIN ANDREA – FLASHES – F60 Flash –

What is Sony Excuse for a 40+ Day delay in shipping

It is the only Flash for the new hot shoe on four current models

    on the A99, RX1, nex6 and the A58

It is not even shipping in the new A99 Kit

  10. For a 3000 dollars or more lens investment, I don’t want uncertain promises on revolutionary new technology for some time in the future. I want a steady further development of existing technology and from time to time real-life state-of-the-art sensor box updates for my lens collection. Sony, you lost me, this is too fricking jumpy and vague. I just sold all my a-mount stuff and bought a nice D7100. Whew, what a relieve.

      1. who are you to tell him what’s a big investment for him? some of its doesn’t earn a lot of money. internet is world wide, you know.

  11. I’m slowly losing my confidence in Sony to keep up with the rat race. It seems that a99 software, in my case, is still not finished and unstable. Furthermore there is no real alpha mount lens diversification. I love the lenses I have, but in this case they will not get any new users. And the complete secrecy about roadmap or vision is not providing the already small fanbase with an outlook towards the future.
Do not get me wrong, I would love for Sony to become even bigger than Nikon, but in this climate en the seeable unstable course I wouldn’t be surprised Sony abandoning a-mount all together.

Oww well time will tell, in the mean time I sold my A77 for an om-d and use the a99 pure for commercial work.

  12. Higher iso or more mp.
    The debate continues.
Sony will definitely need to satisfy BOTH sides of this debate to produce the promised GAME CHANGER.
Based on the patents Sony has at its disposal they have the technology to achieve these goals if they have the willpower.
Sony has made some very poor management decisions in the recent past and will continue to pay a steep price for those mistakes until and unless they redeem themselves.
One of those prices is the delay in implementation of the new tech.
Another price is the lack of confidence of both consumers and 3rd party manufacturers.
Metabones does not make an A to E adaptor.
Sigma is making new lenses not for Sony.
Tockina does not make lenses for Sony.

  14. Its interesting….even Sony’s mighty Pro video department didnt have any new cameras for NAB this year. (PMW400 doesnt count)

No EX3 replacement, no FF NEXCAM, no FS100 replacement. No nuffin!

Very odd…something is certainly going on with Sony’s R&D.(I mean…not going on)

    1. Did Video guys draw any conclusion as to what type of mount it was on that DSLR form-factored demo prototype? FZ, PL, or hybrid A or E?

  15. Yes it is Cyber-shot and nothing else for Sony now.
I got my RX100 and selling all my Sony DSLR stuff these days.
I guess “small camera with big sensor” is what many people want/need.
DSLR is for “big lens people” only.

    1. well, Sony was always more into Cybershots than DSLR/SLT i’d say, it’s their bread and butter series .
i am happy that they decided to slow down release cycles in their higher end products like the DSLRS, even though i am sure that they did that more for budgetary reasons than to improve product quality ..as it is the case with many companies today (sigma focusing on the best selling products, Electronic Arts stopping Facebookgames, …).
I for myself rather prefer longe release cycles plus ongoing maintenance (updates) than ultra short release cylces with zero-support afterwards.
What Sony needs to prove to us now is that tehy can deliver good support now 🙂

  16. Unlike AAPL, SNE goes up since December. Visible efforts pay off and Tiger ready to jump.
Don’t panic, gentlemen, and have life!

  17. Indeed Sony made kind of poor decisions like “new” camera with no such big improvement every year (or so). Take a look at the difference between a33 / a35 / a37 or between a55 / a57 / a58! There are not so much news. Even a65 is a kind of bridge between a57 and a77!

I don’t say that these cameras don’t have any improvement but it doesn’t make people want to change their cameras. I’ve had my a55 for 2years and since a57 and a58 has been released and I don’t want to buy any of it, nor a65.

Come on Sony, try to released a realy good camera which can beat out Canikon! You can do it if you want it to!

  18. Sorry, Game over for SONY
I was a Minolta&Sony Fan for three decades and now I changed from A77 to the Canon 5DMII, a hellmachine. Now I know, Canon (and I guess Nikon too) is so much in front, they have so much more superb lenses ( one examle 85/1,8 what the hell and 349€), the have a better menue tethered shooting, so much cheap stuff from other companis, like cheap flash trigger working with TTL (exampleYN-622, the pair for 75€)
I’m so much sorry for SONY, but you are too much behind and you don’t listen to your custumers, you don’t improve firmware….. sorry sorry you lost

  19. @admin: Will the RX series be extended this year? And will these models be full-frame? Sony have spoke of expanding the FF options in handycam, alpha *and* cybershot – I wonder when we’ll see the latter?

  20. SLT is hopeless. The NEX-7n isn’t much an improvement as well. The whole NEX series is half baked and badly supported piece of hardware. Congrats Sony, I have negative loyalty to you and this costed you several customers. Things may change though, just a little advice: stop doing crap, stop cripple thing for the unknown reason. Just do things that at least won’t disappoint your customers: don’t think they are all idiots and will buy your moderate crap for higher price rather than decent products for lower from you competitors.
I have an excellent example: when the new 7n will be introduced, it will cost up to $2k in Russia. So the combined price for the camera and blurry overpriced equivalent of 35/2.8 (which is named after CZ for some mysterious reason) on full frame will cost more than D600 or 6D + superb sigma 35/1.4
Well, it weights more, but it is full frame with superior IQ and totally superior lens.

    1. sincere question: what makes it so important for you to tell the world Sony produces crap? there are many companies in the world producing crap, and you think Sony is one of them. I respect that. but why do you come here everyday saying the same thing? are you angry for any specific personal reason?

      1. Sony produces overpriced crap, this is the reason why they losing everything — otherwise they wouldn’t have these troubles, isn’t it obvious? TVs are crap for their price, vaois are crap, their tablets are crap, their latest flagship smartphone story is a piece of joke — did they really think they can sell gadget with TN screen for the price of super AMOLED equipped one? And so on.
Now take a look at their 5 and 3 NEX series:
        1) 430 thousand dots screen in NEX-3n for the price of old camera with better screen
        2) 5R — no charger, worse touch screen, worse build than 5n for the same price.
Sorry, I wouldn’t buy it and I have already persuade 4 people who asked me for the advice not to buy Sony.

        1. Let me see if I can get this straight. You don’t like Sony’s, your assessment of Sony’s products are your own personal opinion and you take the time out to post on a Sony “fan site” to brag about how you convinced all of 4 people not to buy Sony.

          Someone needs a life.

        2. Always acting like you’re informed, but the above is another example of hot air, or crap if you wish.
The Z does not have a TN panel, but rather an (E)-IPS. Last month I was actually in the factory that builds these panels.

          But your trolling is cute.

    2. NEX-7n isn’t much of an improvement? The thing isn’t even announced.
Also, “moderate crap for higher price rather than decent products for lower from you competitors” is plain ridiculous. And for any normal person the CZ is 35mm f1.8 equivalent, as what it is made for is light.

      1. Yes. Because otherwise they wouldn’t cancel A78 which obviously shares the same sensor. I expect they will only match Nikon D7100 at best.

And you are obviously wrong insisting it’s 35/1.8 FF equivalent: it isn’t. Because FF has more than one stop of noise performance advantage and you can raise ISO on one stop to match shutter speed and have at least the same noise performance. And 35/2.8 will be significantly sharper lens from WO.

        1. Dear Emacs,
You are selling a lot more crap in your posts then you tell Sony is selling.

I own a Sony A700 and a Nex5 and you know what? They still deliver high quality pictures, no crap like you are…
You tell that the A78 is canceled, I didn’t even know it was more then a rumor, so how can they cancel a rumor? Nobody has seen the “roadmap” SAR is talking about.

Then you tell that the Zeis 24mm 1.8 lens is blurry, can you show me one serious test that tells this? NO there is no such test, when that lens delivers blurry pictures it is the fault of the photographer, not the lens, or maybe it is the bokeh of the lens you where looking at?
Then you tell that sony support the Nex badly, but they did give me several FW updates for both my A700 and my Nex 5. The giving some fine lenses (look at the test for the 35mm 1.8, the 50mm 1.8 etc.)

          Please take your crap elsewhere.

        2. You are just the biggest troll ever. Why would you be interested in Sony camera rumors if they only sell overpriced, mediocre crap? Are you dependend on them? Or are you payed by Canon or Nikon?

I guess you and your imaginery friends never shot any photo with Sony gear or any “fake” Carl Zeiss lens, otherwise you wouldn’t come here and complain every day. Go get a life, before it gets you.

  21. The strategy is nice. It could have even worked out if they bothered to write some patches.

Marketing/development must be so off at Sony. I mean, most of the changes that users ask for like auto ISO in M, no auto assist when touching the MF ring, etc. could be implemented by any computer science student in 1 day max if he got the source and the tools.

  22. It’s not bad news, if they concentrate on lenses for the E mount and more choices in the RX line…

  23. Here’s to hoping that instead of churning out camera bodies with incremental upgrades they focus on expanding lens offerings.

  24. awesome, now they can devote all engineers and designers to dog, kid, bird, camel and dolphin mounted cameras as well as hundreds of those cool cyber shot cameras. keep up the great work Sony…

  25. Just think about this, in 2014 Sony has not managed to get any “game changing tech” working. Then by the CEO’s rules no new cameras in 2014 either. “game changing tech” cannot be ordered off the shelf on a schedule.

Of course what the CEO considers “game changing tech” may be nothing that will help still photographers at all. As much of what Sony has produced recently has been. Sony backing off with new developments is not at all a good sign.

  26. I always laugh when people complain about how Sony is falling behind because they didn’t upgrade the A77. Seriously? The Canon 7D, their top of the line APS-C is almost 4 years old and the A77 is barely 2 years old and yet it needs upgrading so that people can take better pictures?!? WTH?

    1. And yet certain key components of the A77 are not up to the level of the 7D, most notably the AF system. It covers less of the frame, has fewer cross sensors (more effective than line sensors), is less customizable, and probably is less accurate (in my experience).

        1. Agreed, I have owned the a77 for over a year and I have extensive experience with the 7d, and I can tell you that the a77 is a far superior tool both in the studio, and on location. This is in regards to stills and video.

  27. Love this statement: “New Sony CEO is pushing to release camera with game changing tech rather than small updates only”

WELL DONE Sony! It’s about time!

Support your users, offer incremental software/firmware updates and keep new camera bodies/releases for ‘hardware’ leaps and improvements! This sounds like a winning strategy to me.

I can however understand in the very low end consumer market some people expect new bodies once or twice a year but on the higher end we really do not need a new body so often and once hardware had a next leap sure release the next gen equipment until then keep the current hardware running as best as possible release new features, tweak other features and listen to what your customers are asking for and start integrating and testing..etc..

Thanks once again Sony! Great job!

  28. I want to congratulate sony for this decision! I dont like to buy disposebel cameras, that are made for short durability.
But i think that with this strategy it is realy necesary to improve firmware faster and more regulary.

    Sorry for my english
    All the best

  29. I remain hopeful. I expect the NEX-7n to be a fairly solid product with performance on part with the D7100 and of course the new shoe. I suspect WiFi and apps will be added but little else.

I agree that the corners that were cut on the NEX-3N and 5R are worrying but perhaps sales will convince them to act otherwise. A Foveon-like sensor would be awesome but there can’t be any loss in other types of performance (FPS, ISO, etc.) and that is a tall order. Sigma has yet to deliver that sensor after years of trying.

  30. It seems everytime the NEX-7n appears in a rumor it just pumps up the sheer numbers of posts here. I’m pretty sure Admin will post some more news even if it really isn’t news just to keep the interest here going and the comments flowin!lol

Let’s see how much of an improvement the 7n will be, I’m pretty much sure it will just be minor advantages over the old one, but some of these minor adjustments might even be worth the upgrade, even though once announced the prices for the old 7 will drop into nowhere.

I myself will be on the possible buyers list, but I “need” better ISO performance (Maybe even a 50) and definitely faster AF, and yes I can focus manually but I don’t want to!;-P

I sure wish it would have some Time lapse function even if it meant I would have to buy another App, but really it should be all included in the new firmware.

As well as a better Jpeg engine. And of course to shoot high quality jPegs and Raw at the same time.

Hope they keep the Tri-Navi Control. And actually I was pretty comfortable with the uncomfortable Menu system. If you use it lots you get used to it lots.

Do not need other hotshoe. But maybe better Video performance with a slightly optimized Codec.

Tiltable Screen would be awesome, but until now I learned to live without it.

If some of these minor changes willend up in the finished product and the price is right, well then Sony…I’m willing to invest.

And then the NEX(t) move I want to take as a ambitious prosumer is Full Frame. So this 7n should last me til Sony shoves out a PAYABLE FF alternative. If it’s not payable, I will certainly give up my loyalty and look elsewhere…

So Sony here’s your chance, bring it on…!;-)

    1. just curious: why would you be loyal while switching to ff when none of your lenses will be compatible anyway?

      1. Well, of course no one knows any specs about a future FF NEX Camera released some time NEXt year, but as I presume it will have an e-mount. So then I still can use my APS-C Lenses in Crop mode and will at least get pictures hopefully with less noise and more depth. Anyhow I sure would have to buy some new lenses with it, otherwise the investment wouldn’t make any sense. Of course the old body and some lenses would have to be sold beforehand as I’m just a ambitious amateur and the investments will have to stay in the budget that of a family man!;-)

    1. Sony has the HVL43AM and HVL20AM flash units that support the old Minolta hot shoe, they also now have the HVL43M and HVL20M which support the new Mi Shoe (the HVL20M can be seen on some product shots of the HX50).

  32. Hello Admin,
Any news about the once rumored high-quality E-mount zoom and the 85mm/1.8 ?

We got enough cameras, but still missing out on those lenses…

  33. This may put my plans to switch to Sony on hold. I don’t need “game changing” technology – in fact I would be reluctant to buy into anything too radical. What I do need is some sign that Sony is on a defined path and that I can expect the kind of upgrades I need to keep up with the market.

Sony may well become as marginalized as Sigma, Pentax and Ricoh.

    1. Why would you not want game-changing technology in a camera if it improves image quality? Having a brand new sensor doesn’t mean you’ll be getting a radically new body design and/or lens mount.

I, for one, welcome changes. Bring on NEX-FF with revolutionary sensor tech!

  34. A78 wishlist:
    * Better ISO performance than A77
    * GPS (sure add Wifi if you want, but DO NOT REMOVE GPS!)
    * AF-D

I love my A77 and won’t be changing it within the next 3 years anyways…

  35. Sony have the RX1 which is pretty cool so now they should fix the WA problems on the NEX7 and make it weather sealed, do something for A mount people and then think about what their answer to the Blackmagic Pocket Camera might be. Oh, and stop pratting about with 4K toasters and stuff.

  36. I think Sony are waiting for the next generation of sensors. Due for early 2014.
Yes, Sony are struggling to compete. SLT no sales success. Further comparing the lens line up to CaNikonand even Pentax, sony lenses are not always the right ones, nor at a quality that can compete with even tokina, Tamron, sigma. Yes there are the Zeiss lenses, but they are very expensive. I know Nikon better than Canon, but booth have lenses in three different price levels all great value for money.
Back to the Nex-7n I am very interested – until i look at lens alternatives….. A 59mm short tele – Sony must be joking. And it goes on. OK Zeiss will help with new lenses, but again they will be overpriced.
What Sony needs, both a and E mount is a lens roadmap showing they understand customer requirements!
Look at Fuji! They do not have many lenses, but the lenses are what the customers ask for. And the roadmap can change from 1.4 to 1.2 short tele for instance.
Fuji will also release affordable camera bodies that will compete with Sony.
So Sony should look at how Fuji works – and learn from them. Fuji is about photo and Sony is about electronics and it shows…

    1. I agree but not fully! I compare my NEX7 and 10-18, kit and 55-210 with my other camera 5D Mk3 with some more lenses. The kit for NEX is mediocre but the other two absolutely IQ comparable with Canon 16-35 and 100-400 one of the two long ones I have for Canon. The real difference is the Canon viewfinder, to be honest, whitch is much clearer in low light. Hope for NEX7n here.

      1. The Sony 55-210 is a piece of junk compared to the Canon 100-400mm in every way to even suggest they are on the same level makes me think you have never used one

  37. I am pretty oblivious about the A-mount cameras, but if they hold true to their promise of a good firmware update for the A77, why do they need to release a new camera? The 7D lasted a long time, with some excellent firmware updates. Slash the price on the A99 so people might actually buy one. They certainly don’t need to introduce any new NEX cameras this year. Firmware updates are all that’s really needed there. They could really make some happy customers if they gave us some usability updates and more lenses and accessories, for both mounts. They haven’t made any real improvement on the 16mpx sensor, other than adding PDAF. So, I agree, stop shoving bodies down our throats, without addressing the systems as a whole.

  38. One more thing that we have to keep in mind. Japan is going through a very rough economy at the moment. I am sure that Sony would love to make 10 big moves right now. But will have to make two or three (Safe, wise, smart) choices and not take chances.

  39. What a shock!!!!

Sorry Sony you are floundering in debt and making poor excuses for no NEW products for over 9 months, and hints of a game changer Really you this is a wind up?

During the next 9 months you will see +50MP DSLR’s from both Canon & Nikon, and mirrorless wise a new OMD and Fuji will have a new flagship camera and the X-E2 + several new lenses.

Time stands still for no one unless you are a Sony loyal customer

  40. It’s a good sign. Maybe Sony finally listened, or rather looked at the numbers of their SLT sales recently. a99 should have been a FF version of the excellent Panasonic GH3. Now Panasonic (an electronic company) is really doing well in this segment. Sony, you got great Sensor tech, hire a a few real photographers to fine tune your cameras and give you a general direction.

    1. So true Sergei… That’s what worries me… that Sony is more into making electronic gimmics that they think users want, rather than top-of-the-line cameras for users who want to use their cameras for… photography!

And they actually have to start marketing their cameras… There’s no Sony camera commercial here in Sweden whatsoever…

      1. Nope, really serious. I’ve had a77 and then a99, sold all my Sony gear to get a photography oriented set up from Canon. GH3 is completely mirror less, offers AF points selectable anywhere on the sensor, delivers SHARP 1080p 60FPS video at up to 75Mb/s. Now if a99 wasn’t sluggish, had great AF coverage and speed, lost the SLT and made excellent flash system a la Canon 600Ex-rt I’d still be using a99 today.

        1. Well, you have a few points there I’d agree with, but losing the translucent mirror? Don’t tell me you are one of those who still complains about some minor loss of light. I mean, you just said that you preferred the m43 sensor over an FF.
There are plenty of other points for the A99, starting with IBIS, significantly better sensor, etc. And, Panasonic doesn’t seem to be doing well at all.

  41. A Foveon-like sensor in the NEX-7n has me worried. If it’s anything like the Foveon used in Sigma’s cameras it will suck at any speed above ISO 100. Hopefully Sony will have fixed the low light issues in multi-layer sensors.

  42. “NEX-7 Successor…Only NEX or A-Mount to come out this year”

What about the a58??? Isn’t that still coming out??!!

  43. Admin, A58 and 3N are 2013 cameras that were already launched.

So it makes 3 camera in a year….still plenty.

Your post amkes me worry about this new nex-7….if it is bumped up NEX-6 rather than the compelling cameras of 2014 than may be I ought to wait for 2014 regardless that I want top notch APS-C NEX camera.

PP I have one so may just as well enjoy it for one more year

  44. With all brands you can “Take great pictures”… That is not the reason so many are pissed at Sony now… Sony is lost right now.. There is no other way to see it…
I know some of you are trying to keep the resale value of your a77 up, but wake up… I already sold my a77 and have NO regrets…
The reasons to be pissed are:
    1) Jpeg and high iso quality (Jpegs are MUSHY)
    2) No clean HDMI out, No real firmware improvements.
    3) Sony switched the flash mount on you
    4) Cant get your (Adaptor mounted) f60 flash at all or having issues with it.
    5) The newest Nex5 was just basically a firmware update
    6) (I bet) The newest Nex7 will be basically a firmware update
    7) We were waiting on a quality FF photography based (36Mp Sony sensor) A1x and they deliver the underperforming a99 and a58 (wow)
    9) I’m sure I left some out that come to your mind… (Feel free to add)

    1. Your reasons. A few good ones, but… The new 5R has PDAF on sensor and wi-fi. So Sony made a very good camera even better. And how is the A99 underperforming?

        1. Not sure what you meant by AV. Maybe AF? It isn’t slow. It might be slower than competing bodies, but it can stand on its own and it is an improvement on previous Sony bodies. I would have to agree on the flash point and disagree completely on the camera being overpriced (except maybe in Europe). It competes very well with the 5D3 and D800, so unless you call them overpriced as well…

  45. Cameras without lenses = NO SALE!! Where are the pro-quality lenses to go with the pro-quality cameras.

    1. What pro-quality cameras? NEX does not even have a single weather-sealed body, not even mentioning a pro-quality one.

  46. 2013 will continue to a slow year for SLR new releases industry wide because 2012 was a huge year for new releases. Canon released: 1Dx (flagship model), 5D3, 6D, 60Da, Rebel 650. In 2012, Nikon released: D4 (flagship model), D800/D800e, D600, D5200, D3200. In 2012, Sony released: a99 (flagship model), a37, a57 and it should be noted that the a77 was released at the end of 2011.

2012 was a leap year in releases. 2013 will continue to be an evolutionary year and the release schedule is going to be small for the big three. Canon continues with their annual Rebel update, introduced the small 100d rebel and is rumored to release the 7D2. Nikon released the d7100. Sony released the a58.

dSLR cameras are a mature technology. Canon took over 3 years to introduce the 5d2 successor. Their flagship 1Ds has not been updated since 2007 and their current flagship 1Dx has 15% lower resolution. The 7D is over 3 1/2 years old. Nikon similarly takes 3 years to update their higher end bodies. An update schedule of two to over three years for the high-end to pro level bodies is common.

The sky isn’t falling. Sony has a smaller and simpler line-up of SLR/SLT cameras so it only seems like there are no releases in sight but nothing is overdue or behind the industry schedule.

  47. Ok guys, let’s go out and take pictures. We have until 2014 to consider upgrading equipment.

But seriously. Hope this is not an excuse to hold on lenses development. They
need to keep releasing more lenses to keep Sony users interested on the system and attract new buyers. I was expecting to see more easy choice lenses like the SAL85F28 or SAL50F18 or SAL35F18..Those were great additions to the A-mount lineup.

  48. “In short, in 2014 we will have new A-mount FF cameras, new NEX-FF cameras using new viewfinder and new sensor tech. I know it’s a long time to go but”

Well then, you should just shut the site for a year.

  49. only one E/A mount camera will be launched this year? well.. if you tell me it’s Pantex,? ok, fine, Sigma? yes for sure.. but this is not Sony style… (she used to put as many cameras as she can on shelf.. and dislike to update firmwares) If Sony is really launching just one camera in the market this year, she lost the battle (market share) for 100% sure..

  50. What i really don’t get: Every time Sony introduces a new Body for E- or A-mount, everybody is whining about Sony being a company just throwing out body after bodymwithout any substance.
Now, Sony is doing the opposite thing, going for the more “serious approach” and don’t fire body after body within half a year and guess what! Everybody is complaining!
    WTF is wrong with you?!?
USE THE FUCKING THING AND GET OUT TO TAKE PHOTOS FFS!!!

    1. Would you be surprised if I tell you that on other forums and with other brands, it is the same thing? It is frustrating tat we can’t have a normal discussion about the camera industry, without people starting to insult each other.

  51. In my opinion, this is great news IF they use this time wisely. Instead of flooding the market with marginally better bodies than they released 6-12 months ago, they should now focus on supporting their EXISTING customers. Release some major revision firmware updates, get their new lighting system filled out (more flashes, wireless triggers, etc.), maybe knock out a few G series lens updates that include full weatherproofing and SSM drive motors, kiss some major 3rd party vendor ass so the new hotshoe will see at least a small amount of accessory support, etc.

Maybe once Sony shows it’s commitment to their existing customers (for a change) who have invested HEAVILY in their products, we won’t be so skittish about new purchases for a seemingly dying and horribly supported brand.
