New Rokinon teaser for the new 135mm (A and E-mount) lens.

Rokinon/Samyang posted a new teaser for their new tele prime lens. You also see the blurred lens on the background. It’s likely to be a new 135mm f/1.8 (or f/1.4?) lens and knowing the company history we can expect to get an A and an E-mount version of that lens. Finally a “cheaper” version of our Zeiss 135mm f/1.8 lens!

The lens should be announced before the CP+ show that starts on February 12.

  1. I’d prefer a (2.0 or faster) 100, it’s the only three digits lens I ever use. But of course there’s a bigger market for 135’s.

    1. And thus an infinitely large market in the demand for ever there to be a functional 135mm 1.4 nevermind sure interest, including my own, for an inexpensive modern 135mm 1.8 but yeah roll on the fixer troll…
On my new patented ‘tri pad’ for shutterspeed ISO and aperture control, there could be displayed the area which would give the stopping for a subjects movement in all possible combinations so you can FIX it to taste, and show a more general light and hand steadiness/focal length reading for similar purpose as well 🙂

      1. Could you simply your language a little? I don’t understand more than a few words from it. There are some non-native speakers around here, you know.

  2. Finally 3rd parties are starting jumping onto the FE ship. 🙂

I guess I’ll give it a chance. Depending on the price – because 135mm is not that often needed for my usage.

During Photokina I tried some of the Samyang lenses (afaik Samyang and Rokinon are the same lenses) and liked them. Very solid built and solid IQ for a fantastic price level.
My favorite was the 14mm/2.8 FF version.

    1. Gluing the adapter on a DSLR lens is nothing to rave about – Samyang has to be applauded for their 8mm 2.8 and 12mm 2.0, designed especially for mirrorless.

  3. A 135/1.4 would have a very large diameter front element (95mmfilters?). The teaser silhouette looks more like a 135mm f2 sized lens, so T2.1/2.2 seems more likely. The T is the only definite digit in the teaser, so this seems to be a cine lens.

    1. No AF. But it will be cheap.

And you can’t really compare an old MF lens with a new design lens.

The Rokinon 85mm f1.4 was better than my current Minolta 85mm f1.4

Only issue is I couldn’t focus properly with the 85mm Rokinon.

So this 135mm could be even harder to use. 🙁

      1. Why did you have difficulty focusing? With peaking and magnified view, it should be pretty easy.

        1. I used it on my old A700. Focusing on that sucked. And I shot people. Couldn’t afford to take long to focus on that.

          1. I wonder why they don’t make focus confirm chips for e-mount like they do for nikon?

  4. I applaud Roki for their lens, I own the 14mm f2.8 and 24mm f1.4 and love them, but their FE mount lens are nothing more than their Canon/Nikon mount lense with the adapret glued on. . . . . . That’s not making a lense for FE. I personally just buy the Canon mount ones since I still own a Canon with my a7, and I have no problem with that, but don’t sell things as an FE mount when it’s obvious you didn’t really make them for the FE. Any dummy can buy and use an adapter. I welcome a 135mm from them regardless of the mount.

      1. That’s very true. I fully support Roki and their way of doing business. Overall they make a great product for the price. Yes, their quality control has been a issue, but when you get a good one, they’re usually really good. I just wish they wouldn’t beat around the bush with the gluing on an adapter. Just sell the Canon and E mount lense as one, including the E mount adapter with the lense, and you throw it out if you’re a Canon shooter. Less of a manufacturing process, less packaging and inventory, which means more sales and profit.

        1. The native lens for E-mount does have the advantage that it connects solidly and it can report the focal length to the camera even if it offers no other communication and the a7ii can use that to hep the antishake.

And my very limited knowledge of lens design says that for longer focal lengths the built in extension tube is about as good as a lens redesign – its the shorter focal lengths where it’s disappointing to see the FE lens bigger instead of smaller.

(and I hate the way retailers show you the picture of the smaller Canikon version when selling the E-mount lens – that’s just misleading)

  5. How I understand #3digits is that 3 digits make up ???mm T?.? – we already know the numbers are 1, 3 and 5.

To me, that means it’s going to be T1.5 (~F1.4) as well – T3.x or 5.x wouldn’t make sense and T1.3 would need the lens to look like an upside-down pyramid. If the three digits didn’t include the T-stop, then they wouldn’t make a deal out of them being ? marks as well.

    1. Well yes its a better lens but the price is a tad on the higher side.

If this one can give a close enough output for 1/4th the price then it should sell decently.

        1. Their 85mm f1.4 is $300. Their 35mm f1.4 and 24mm f1.4 are around $500 so this lens should also be in that price league.

      1. The problem I have is manual focussing. Just for fun I try it with the 135/1.8 wide open on the eyes of the model. Doable with trained models. But let her move or do it with untrained or kids and you are lost (there may be better guys at manual focussing, but it is very very hard). So AF is the way to go for me unless I go to 3.5-4. But then why not use the 70-200/4?

  6. What the FE system really lacks is cheap normal primes. Every other system has a cheap 35 and a cheap 50 prime. They may not set DXO charts on fire, but they are decent performers and are low cost. But $1000 for a 50 that autofocuses? Yeah, it may be good – but this system needs a 50 that is about 1/2 that price.

      1. Yes, I am sure the 55 is superb. But, yes, this focal length is the standard prime – it is great that they have a high quality version for people who want that. But they should also have, as you suggested – 90% of this lens for $500 or less. You can get a very fine 50 in Canon or Nikon version – f/1.4 for less that $500. This system NEEDS that kind of lens.

  7. If it is a 135 with f2 or 1.8 or better and has the same quality of their 85 I will buy it. Using this with the new IBIS cameras from sony should be great.

  8. 135 f2 , f1.8 with good optic sell like hot cake . f2.8 is not so exiting considering that there is so many old manual 135mm with f2.8 . Contax zeiss 135mm f2.8 is nice lens , it cost me 200eur . Samyang must make one step more is they want to find buyer .

  9. From the lens diameter, I think it is 135/2. I thought Samyang would have come up with a faster lens. Since it would be very difficult for them to make it sharp wide open(unlike Zeiss lenses), I doubt it is going to draw lots of attention. 135mm is stellar if it is sharp at f>2.8

    1. It’s not hard to make a 135mm sharp at 2.8. No reason to assume this isn’t low hanging fruit for Roki. They keep getting better with every release as well.
