New RCCDroid APP makes you control the A58 (and other Sony cameras too?) via tablet/smartphone.

At rccdroid.glensk.com you can read about the new RCCDroid Android App (Download here at Pplay.google.com). It’s a new App that allows USB Tethering/Remote Control of the Sony Alpha SLT-A58. But someone on the Sony Germany community also discovered that it should actually work on other cameras like the DSLR-A700, DSLR-A850, DSLR-A900, SLT-A99, ILCE-7 and ILCE-7R).

This is what you can with the Android powered device and USB connection:
Preview of a taken picture on a large display (e.g. Tablet)
Long term exposure without touching the camera (BULB)
HDR Series
Selfportrait with correct focus

The following features are planned for future versions
Timershots (Time laps)
Change of camera properties
HDR Series with different adaptions
Automatic shutter by noise
Wireless mode via Bluetooth
Videotakes
Writing of GPS data to pictures
Support of further Sony models (e.g. A99)

Sounds great!

    1. The concept is totally different from triggertrap. triggertrap is a superintelligent switch, to release the shutter. RCCDroid is communicating in BOTH directions with the camera. RCCDroid is sending commands to the camera (e.g. shutter release, set focus, change of exposure time, aperature or ISO) and is getting response from the camera (e.g. preview of taken pictures on larger display, information if focus was set, information about the camera parameters). Additionally it will be able to make extended HDR pictures without using bulb mode (n rows of pictures with camera exposure time).

      Please check website rccdroid.glensk.com

  1. OMG YES! Darned Sony wont let me download apps for my cam because Im not in one of the (like only 10) selected countries! >:(

This app is greatly welcomed! Only wish it could work wireless, but oh well, this is better than nothing! Downloaded!

      1. I have an a7, use a Galaxy S4, when I have a chance Ill try this app, since I dont have a cable that can connect both devices

        1. Android powered device (with RCCdroid on it), that is connected to Camera via USB, will be controlled by another Android device via Bluetooth (with an client app for RCCDroid)

          1. well, that seems silly to me, but you know better. I would prefer if you could connect to Sony cameras via WIFI instead by USB, are there any plans?

          2. still you could make it work via WIFI for the supporting cameras which have Wifi, it seems useful, dont you?

          3. sure, but I am still at the beginning and cameras without WIFI support are in main focus for now.

          4. Still great job man! I understand you, just wish someday it can be WiFi supported for the cameras that have it, Im waiting for the A7 support with excitement!

      1. how will that work? because bluetooth is super slow. will it have live view? record to android device? it will take ages with raw images. good luck with that.

it’s not for any reason that remote controls use wifi. not to mention range and other issues.
bluetooth is a really bad idea. wifi is the way to go.
something like the new pentax wifi card that lets other devices control just via a wifi sd card. something like that would be great.
        good luck with bluetooth.
too bad. it was a great idea.
it would give sony apc-s alphas a capability that lacks compared to nikon canon and others. it could be a game changer for some buyers.

imo sony should hire this hackers to produce something useful.

        1. Android powered device (with RCCdroid on it), that is connected to
Camera via USB, will be controlled by another Android device via
Bluetooth (with an client app for RCCDroid). There will be no large amount of data passing bluetooth. All taken pictures will be saved on Server via USB. Client application will only get a small preview of pictures(very fast). So, client app is a bluetooth remote control for RCCDroid (which is a USB remote control).

    1. You can try to set up an fake account from that country, like put a fake address… it will work then.

  2. Anyone has success with it? I tried with an old Samsung Galaxy S2 on my A99 and it doesn’t work. Camera set to PC Remote mode and connected via OTG.

    1. I tried Galaxy S2 (Android 4.0.3 ) with A99, but rccdroid failed to work

rccdroid even does not support Android 4.1.2 (or later)….so it would not
be shown in playstore if you are using newer android versions than 4.0.3.

      1. This is NOT correct ! Minimum Android version is 3.1, but USB Host mode must be supported with Hard- and Software. Please check prerequisites on rccdroid.glensk.com/englisch

      1. Hmm, didn’t the article say, “But someone on the Sony Germany communityalso discovered that it should actually work on other cameras like the DSLR-A700, DSLR-A850, DSLR-A900, SLT-A99, ILCE-7and ILCE-7R).”

What devices did you guys try with?

  3. Just tried with A7r and Galaxy Note 3 which doesn’t work. Can’t wait to use it when it does work. Please try and get a focus stacking capability.

  4. I have a request to all of you!!!!!!! write camera ranger and BUG THEM FOR SONY SUPPORT
They said if they get enough requests they will develop for Sony!!!!
    http://www.camranger.com
They have a better product, full local wireless control, shutter, iso, aperture…all of it!!!!!
    thnx!

    1. Camranger is very expensive hardware, when most recent camera’s already have built-in and free wireless control. So no, I will not waste my time on Camranger.

  5. RCCDroid is only working for A58 now, but it will be enhanced for A99 and A7 in the next weeks. Please check Android prerequisites on rccdroid.glensk.com/englisch/technik.

    1. I welcome this and fully support it! 🙂 Hope to use your s for my A7R, etc.

I really do not like the sony playmemories site at all (I don’t mind paying for an app but that site and the payment options suck). That alone is a major reason.

      1. A77 does not support tethering yet. Maybe a future firmware update may help, but only Sony knows if hardware is sufficient.

  6. will this app let you bracket more than 3 shots for hdr? if so, it would be a great way to expand the bracketing on the a7r…

    1. Yes, there will be an option for make up to 13 shots with a span of max. 4EV (with exposure time of camera)

  7. how are you guys connecting to the a58 – have a microUSB male to MIcroUSB male cable? I have a note 3 and an A58. just ordered a dongle that fits the Micro USB 3.0 cable on the Note 3 to a female USB, and then use the micro USB cable to connect to that. Can’t wait to use this app. thanks.

    1. You will need an OTG adapter and a simple USB cable:

      A58

      Micro-B plug
      |
      | USB cable
      |
      Standard-A plug

      Standard-A receptacle
      |
      | OTG adapter
      |
      Micro-B plug

      AndroidDevice

        1. But there is a guy in Germany, who extended the cable up to 35 feet. I would not recommend this, but it worked.

  8. Trigger trap is currently working on a cable for the Alpha a7. They still have a very limited auto bracket feature for HDR photographers. . RCCDROID sounds very exciting with the option to customize my auto brackets beyond 3 @ 3 EV. Can’t wait to try your product. Don’t care what it cost. You will make Trey Raddcliff very happy. He has a large following of HDR shooters and he uses a Sony Alpha a7r.

    1. This is the main difference between RCCDroid and triggertrap.
triggertrap will make HDR shots in Bulb mode, so exposure times cannot be less than 10ms (for A58). RCCDroid is able to use the camera exposure time (independant of Bulb Mode), up to the maximum/minimum of camera.

      1. Real estate photographers such as myself who have switched to the sony A7 and a7r will be very happy when your app is availble. We need an auto bracket range of at least 9 exposures. The a7/a7r is very appealing for real estate because it has a flip out screen allowing me to shoot from corners and it’s full frame sensor. Sadly I’m still using my older Nikon and a promote control system to achieve my auto brackets. Sony’s current auto bracket system is useless for indoor photography. Looking very forward to this new much need app.

    1. Even if it is not necessary, there will be little pause, because changing the exposure time between the shots needs some time.
